Construction

Layers

The Brentwood Home Sequoia mattress is a 12″ mattress consisting of 4 unique layers of foam and latex.

  • Top layer (cooling & comfort) – 2″ layer of gel memory foam. This top layer of foam works to provide the contour and cooling for the mattress. The gel foam memory foam offers a more pronounced contour while helping pull heat away from the surface.
  • 2nd layer (cooling & comfort) – 2″ of latex foam. The latex foam helps with cooling as well as pressure relief and support. The latex provides a good level of push back to the top layer while still absorbing the pressure your body tries to create.
  • 3rd layer (transitional support) – 2″ polyurethane foam. This layer acts as the transition layer between the latex and base foam. In addition, the polyurethane foam helps provide the deep compression support for the mattress.
  • Bottom layer (foundation) – 6″ of support foam. The bottom layer serves as the foundational base for the mattress as well as providing additional deep compression support.

Cover

The cover of the Sequoia mattress is made from wool and polyester side panels along with a soft, quilted top layer of foam. This quilted layer of foam adds a touch of softness to the mattress and helps provide extra pressure relief. Running along the sides and top of the mattress are 2 handles, which help make moving the mattress a painless process.

Aesthetically speaking, the Sequoia’s cover is quite nice. From the button tufted side panels, colors and design, to the Belgian knit, this mattress is one of the most appealing mattresses I have seen to date. Instead of mimicking what has become the “go to” cover design (basic grey and white cover) Brentwood’s Sequoia cover blends both traditional and modern designs to create a stylish finish.

As an added bonus, and probably my favorite attribute about the cover, there are handles stitched into 3 sides of the mattress (6 total). Any 12″ mattress is going to be on the heavier side, so these handles do a great job of making the moving process much easier. Additionally, they help avoid potential damage from tugging on the actual mattress cover itself.

My cousin, Chris, and I were able to pick the Sequoia up by the handles, preventing any snags or tears on the cover. While doing so, we paid attention to the performance of the handles. They held up extremely well and showed no signs of ripping or tearing.

Firmness, Feel, & Support

The Brentwood Home Sequoia mattress comes in at a 5-5.5 out of 10 on the firmness scale, with 10 being the most firm. Brentwood designed the Sequoia with intentions of fitting the needs of a vast majority of sleepers.

To begin with, the Sequoia does a great job of balancing sinkage and hug. The balance between these two also makes for solid support from head to toe. In addition, the quilted cover meshes well with the top two layers (gel memory foam & latex) to provide top notch pressure relief. Personally, I found the mattress to be a touch to soft while sleeping on my stomach. As I rolled over onto my side the Sequoia felt much more comfortable. From my shoulders to my ankles, the Sequoia was able to relieve my joints of pressure, creating an enjoyable sleeping experience.

My wife had a similar experience. While sleeping on her back she felt as if the mattress was soft enough to allow her to sink in, yet supportive enough to maintain consistent spinal alignment.

Motion transfer on the Sequoia was quite good as well. The thicker foam layers and softer feel do a good job of absorbing a great deal of energy when moving around during the night. During my sleep test my wife’s movements never once disturbed me.

As we move onto the contour of the Sequoia, I can honestly say I was thoroughly impressed. Although I sank into the mattress and felt a good amount of contour, the layer of latex below the top layer of gel memory foam helped to avoid any sort of stuck or trapped feeling. This latex also gives the mattress a nice degree of bounce.

Typically, memory foam mattresses struggle when it comes to bounce. Yet, the Sequoia was able to respond to pressure quickly, providing a nice level of bounce. This is another bonus, as amorous activities are much more enjoyable when there’s a reasonable level of bounce.

FAQ: Best mattress for sex

All in all, the Sequoia is one of the nicer memory foam mattresses I have tested to date. Balanced levels of sinkage and hug, pronounced contour, great pressure relief, bounce, and full body support are all a part of the package with the Sequoia. While this mattress is on the pricier end of the scale, the quality you’re receiving stacks up right in line with the price you’re paying.

One final bonus with this mattress is the edge support. As an all foam mattress, the Sequoia performs well above average in terms of supporting weight along the edges. Throughout my sleep test I made a point to sleep directly on the edge. Not once did I feel as if I was going to be ejected from the mattress while doing so.

Sinkage Tests

All mattress reviews on Sleepopolis go through a short series of sinkage tests. These tests are deigned to provide you with insight on how the mattress will perform under various conditions.

  • Lying on back – as I lied on my back with my weight spread evenly across the mattress, I saw 1-2″ of sinkage.
  • Lying on side – when I rolled over onto my side, I saw 1.5-2 of sinkage.
  • Sitting on edge (conservative)  – while sitting near the edge with my butt slightly back on the mattress, I saw 3-3.5″ of sinkage.
  • Sitting on edge (aggressive) – in a more aggressive sitting position with my weight directly directly on the edge, I saw 3.5-4″ of sinkage.
  • Standing in the middle – while standing in the middle of the mattress with all of my weight at one point, I saw 4.5-5″ of sinkage.

Keep in mind, sinkage results will vary based on body type and size. As a reference, I weigh 140 pounds and have a fairly uniform body type.

Who Should buy the Brentwood Home Sequoia mattress?

I would recommend the Brentwood Sequoia mattress to sleepers who:

  • Want a medium firm mattress – landing between a 5-5.5 out of 10 on the firmness scale (10 being the most firm), the Sequoia is considered a medium to medium firm mattress.
  • Want a plush to layer with balanced hug & sinkage – with a plush top layer, the Sequoia welcomes you with a soft initial feel followed by balanced levels of sinkage and hug. The sinkage and hug is backed by solid support from head to toe.
  • Want good pressure relief – once again, the plush top layer provides a very nice amount of pressure relief. All of my major joints that typically create pressure on a mattress felt relieved. There was no digging into the mattress or feeling as if I had to sleep a certain way to avoid pressure points.
  • Want above average edge support – as an all foam mattress, the Sequoia is able to offer a surprising level of edge support. There is virtually no difference from sitting slightly back on the mattress to the direct edge. The thicker construction and high quality materials make for solid edge support.

Brentwood Home Sequoia Mattress
brentwood sequoia mattress

The Brentwood Home Sequoia mattress is their top of the line memory foam mattress. A combination of memory foam, latex, and a plush top layer makes for one of the more comfortable and supportive mattress Sleepopolis has tested to date. At a 5-5.5 out of 10 on the firmness scale (10 being the most firm) the Sequoia is considered a medium to medium firm mattress. The response is not extremely fast, but the layer of latex foam does help to increase response and prevent any type of a stuck feeling. This mattress is a great choice for side and back sleepers. Additionally, great edge support is an added bonus with the Sequoia.
