Best Mattress for Side Sleepers

In the United States, over 54 percent of adults sleep on their side, making it the most common sleeping position. Unfortunately, many mattresses aren’t built to meet side sleepers’ specific needs. They might be too firm, which can create tension at the shoulders and hips — the areas where side sleepers already put the most pressure. Or they might be too soft, which can result in a lack of spinal support.

I asked Sleepopolis Chief Medical Advisor Dr. Raj Dasgupta what exactly to look for in the best mattress for side sleepers, and he told me that “Pressure relief through contouring materials like memory foam, along with proper spinal alignment, is crucial. Also, a supportive core prevents excessive sinking, body contouring, breathability and durability enhance comfort.”

With that in mind, I recommend that side sleepers opt for either a medium-firm mattress or a soft to medium-soft mattress. Below, I’ll highlight some of our favorites that fall into this firmness range and dive into all the factors that contribute to a sound side-sleeping experience. To pick these mattresses, I ran each one through a series of tests to see how well it performed in areas such as cooling, pain relief, motion isolation, and more. I paid special attention to pain relief, especially at the shoulders and hips. I also made sure that these mattresses encompassed a wide price range. Before any discounts, they cost anywhere from $899 to $2,499 for a queen-size bed.

Our Top Mattress Pick for Side Sleepers

The Helix Midnight landed at the top of our list for the best mattress for side sleepers due to its medium-firm feel and good balance of comfort and support. Side sleepers should appreciate the zoned support, which cushions the shoulders and hips while supporting the lower back.

What I Look For In The Best Mattresses For Side Sleepers

Pressure Relief

With the wrong mattress, the body can build up tension in key areas, making it more likely to experience back and joint pain. For side sleepers, pain is most common in the hips and shoulders. The mattresses on this roundup scored impressively on our pressure relief tests, showing low to zero pressure buildup in these areas. I also tested for motion isolation, or how much movement you will feel on the mattress when you’re in it, by dropping a ball and reading the motion transfer on a seismograph. These mattresses also performed well on this test, meaning you won’t be disturbed and caused to move around during the night, further helping with pressure relief.

Edge Support

When our experts refer to edge support, we’re simply talking to the strength of the mattress around the perimeter. When our testers determine that a bed has excellent edge support, it won’t compress too much when lying or sitting down on it. This lets us fully spread out and use the entire surface of the mattress. And since many side sleepers rest close to a mattress’s edge, I made it a point to include beds with strong edge support, so you feel secure across the entire surface.

Firmness

We score mattress firmness between 1 and 10, with 1 being the softest and 10 being the firmest. Our testers determined that side sleepers should use a softer mattress, somewhere between a 3 out of 10 and 6 out of 10, to alleviate pressure at the hip and shoulder.

How Do We Calculate Our Sleepopolis Score?

To arrive at our final Sleepopolis mattress score, we use a weighted formula that averages the scores of several individual categories we believe to be important considerations when purchasing a mattress. We use a scale from 1–5, with 5 being excellent, 3.5 being average and 1 being poor. Regarding how much we weigh each category, support and value are the most important at 1.25. Weighed at 1 are factors like materials, cooling, responsiveness, edge support, and motion isolation. These categories are crucial for your purchase, but also depend on your sleep preferences. And lastly, weighed at 0.5 and 0.25 are categories likes warranty and sleep trial, neither of which are deal breakers, but still play an important role. We apply these weights and average the scores to give each mattress a fair assessment of its overall performance.

What our tester says:

“I would recommend this mattress for side or back sleepers because it’s supportive, without putting pressure on your joints.” – Nichole Mondshein, lead reviewer and staff writer

Expert Opinion

The Helix Midnight is a hybrid mattress made with cushioning memory foam and a layer of supportive coils. Helix offers six mattresses in standard and Luxe models, and I found the Helix Midnight to be a great happy medium that works for various sleeping positions and body weights. I chose it as my top pick for side sleepers because it provides contouring around the hips and shoulders where the most pressure is applied. The bed falls at a 6.5 out of 10 on our mattress firmness scale, which means it’s a true medium-firm bed. With a balanced feel that provides both sinkage and lift, side and back sleepers could appreciate the Helix Midnight. I wouldn’t recommend this bed to stomach sleepers, who likely need a firmer mattress.

How Did the Helix Midnight Perform in Testing

Motion Isolation 3.5/5

If you sleep with a partner, you may experience sleep disturbance from their tossing and turning. But a bed with low motion transfer (or high motion isolation) is able to isolate movement on one side of the bed and prevent the sleeper on the other side from feeling it. I test motion isolation by dropping a 10-pound steel ball onto one side of the bed from gradually increasing heights and measuring the disturbance on the other side with a seismometer. When performing this test on the Helix Midnight, I found average motion-isolating abilities. Most sleepers shouldn’t be too disturbed by a restless partner on this bed, but light sleepers may want a bed with lower motion transfer, such as the Nectar Premier.

Support 4/5

Mattress support comes down to its construction. The support layer in the Helix Midnight is made from individually wrapped coils that keep the sleeper lifted and prevent too much sinkage. The top foam layers, especially the Helix Response foam, still provide some initial sinkage but are firm enough to keep the spine in the proper position.

Cooling 4.5/5

I test mattress cooling using a thermal gun to measure how much the mattress heated up after laying on it for five minutes. The Helix Midnight only heated up about five degrees, which indicates good cooling abilities. This bed also contains a layer of coils that promote airflow and breathability. For extra-hot sleepers, purchasing the optional GlacioTex pillow top could help draw even more heat away from the mattress.

Edge Support 4/5

Edge support is tested by measuring how strong the mattress is along the sides and whether I feel stable and supported when laying and sitting on it. This is appealing to couples or anyone that simply likes to spread out, as strong edges can make a mattress feel bigger. Strong edges also indicate durability and a lower chance of sagging over time. When measuring the sinkage of the Helix Midnight with a tape measure while sitting on it, I found strong edge support due to its reinforced edge support system. I felt secure and didn’t feel like I was about to slip off the bed.

Pressure Relief 4.5/5

I test pressure relief by rolling out a specialized mat across the mattress and lying on it in different sleeping positions. The mat is able to sense pressure and translate the results into an easy-to-read graphic using thermal imaging. When sleeping on my side, the mat sensed very little pressure buildup at the shoulders and hips. This tells us that you shouldn’t experience pain on this mattress when sleeping on your side. In fact, I think sleepers with preexisting hip or shoulder pain could find some relief on this bed.

What Our Tester Says

“The Midnight is a nice choice for side sleepers that won’t put too much pressure on their shoulders, hips, or other sensitive joints.”

“I think the Helix Midnight is great for couples because it can cool down two bodies at once, is responsive enough for sex, and has strong enough edge support for both you and a partner to spread out. However, you may want to take the mattress’s just-okay motion-isolating abilities into account if either you or your partner are a light sleeper.”

– Nichole Mondshein, lead reviewer and staff writer

Customer Reviews

Online customers praise the Helix Midnight for its medium comfort level and ease of ordering. You can also test out the mattress in person at showrooms across the country operated by Helix’s brand partners. But the simplest and most convenient way to buy a Helix mattress is online.

“My sleep tracking application showed that my sleep quality tremendously improved. I also previously had back and shoulder pain often, but with the Helix, it is entirely gone.” – Shella C.

The Nectar Premier is a luxurious all-foam mattress equipped with quality materials. A moisture-wicking cover and gel-infused comfort layer create a cooling, thermoregulating mattress for hot sleepers. Perhaps its strongest attribute is its next-level pressure relief. Six inches of foam work to contour sensitive areas, but the high-density foam at the bottom of the bed provides plenty of support. Watch our video review to learn more.

What our tester says:

“My favorite thing about the Nectar Premier is its great pressure relief. This medium-soft mattress is a great fit for side sleepers looking for plush comfort. It might also be a nice fit for sleepers who deal with shoulder pain.” – Nichole Mondshein, lead reviewer and staff writer

Expert Opinion

Memory foam mattresses are great for side sleepers because they provide plenty of sinkage and contouring at the shoulders and hips. I think the Nectar Premier is the best memory foam mattress for side sleepers due to the thick top layer of memory foam that gently cradles sensitive pressure points. Since it’s an all-foam bed that excludes coils, there’s not a ton of bounce and responsiveness, so I wouldn’t recommend it to combination side sleepers, who may find it difficult to move around and switch positions. Although it qualifies as a luxury bed, shoppers can often find a queen-size Nectar Premier for around or under $1,000 after discounts. This bed contains the high-quality materials you’d expect from a luxury mattress without breaking the bank.

How Did the Nectar Premier Perform in Testing

Motion Isolation 4.5/5

Memory foam is typically the best material for motion isolation. Since all-foam mattresses don’t contain coils, there’s less bounce and transfer of movement. The Nectar Premier lived up to my expectations during testing, and the lines on the seismograph indicate you won’t feel your partner tossing and turning at night.

Support 4.5/5

Although this bed doesn’t contain coils (which can add a ton of support to a mattress), I found the Nectar Premier to be very supportive and durable. I could feel the three inches of dynamic response foam easing me onto the 8-inch poly foam base. The poly foam base has a higher density than the top foam layers, so it gave the bed structure and prevented me from sinking too far into the bed.

Cooling 4.5/5

I was hesitant to test the Nectar Premier for cooling because memory foam mattresses are notorious for trapping heat. However, I was pleasantly surprised by how cool this bed slept. The mattress cover is breathable and cool to the touch. When I used the thermal gun after lying on the bed for 5 minutes, the temperature had only increased by 4.3 degrees, which indicates excellent cooling. I think the Nectar Premier is a great choice for hot sleepers looking for a memory foam mattress.

Edge Support 4/5

Since the Nectar Premier doesn’t contain coils or reinforced edges, I had low expectations for its edge support. When I sat on the edge of the mattress, it sunk a bit under my weight. When I laid down directly on the edge, I didn’t feel very stable and thought I might fall off the bed. When I pulled out my yardstick to measure the sinkage, I found the layers had collapsed about 2 inches. The edge support on this mattress isn’t the worst I’ve ever seen, but I would recommend an innerspring bed with stronger edge support to folks with mobility issues.

Pressure Relief 4.5

Based on the pressure map results, I think the Nectar Premier is a great pick for side and back sleepers. This mattress falls at a 6 out of 10 on our firmness scale, making it a medium-soft bed. This firmness level is great for side sleepers who need soft contouring around the hips and shoulders. I also think sleepers struggling with back and hip pain could find relief on this bed.

The Saatva’s coil-on-coil construction provides a classic innerspring feel. It’s a good option for combo sleepers, who will want to feel free to switch positions and avoid feeling “stuck” in the mattress. It comes in three firmness levels, so you should be able to find one that suits your needs. The white glove delivery Saatva provides is an added perk and will save you the headache of getting rid of your old mattress (they take it away for free!). For more information, watch our video review.

What our tester says:

“I think the Saatva is a great option for back sleepers, as the Luxury Firm model provides enough cushioning for their lumbar region, but also lots of support to keep their spine in a neutral alignment.” – Nichole Mondshein, lead reviewer and staff writer

Expert Opinion

The Saatva Classic is a traditional innerspring bed that’s offered in three firmness options: Plush Soft, Luxury Firm, and Firm. For combination side sleepers, I recommend the Plush Soft model, which offers the most sinkage and contouring at the hips and shoulders. Since combo sleepers switch between sleeping positions throughout the night, a bouncy and responsive mattress can help them easily move around and avoid feeling trapped in the bed’s layers. With two layers of coils, even the softest model of the Saatva is very responsive and a great match for these folks. Combination sleepers who spend part of the night on their stomach could enjoy the Saatva Classic, but they’ll likely find better spinal alignment on the Firm model.

How Did the Saatva Perform in Testing

Motion Isolation 3/5

I test motion isolation by dropping a 10-pound steel ball onto the mattress from three different heights and measuring the detected disturbance using a seismometer. If the seismograph displays harsh spiking lines, you’re likely to feel your partner tossing and turning on their side of the bed. When performing this test on the Saatva Classic, the seismometer detected high motion transfer, likely due to the bouncy coil-on-coil construction. In general, innerspring mattresses have a hard time isolating motion because they’re so responsive.

Support 5/5

I gave the Saatva Classic 5 stars for support because of its coil-on-coil construction that keeps sleepers lifted up and out of the mattress. This bed definitely has a more “on top” of the bed feel that prevents the spine from sinking and bending. The layer of memory foam in the middle is zoned for support, meaning its firmness fluctuates depending on where the sleeper needs the most support. This layer includes a proprietary Spinal Wire that’s designed to offer additional spinal support.

Cooling 4.5/5

Innerspring mattresses like the Saatva Classic tend to sleep cooler than memory foam beds due to the airflow supplied by the coils. The Saatva has two layers of coils for even more breathability. When I measured the mattress’s temperature after laying on it for 5 minutes, it had heated up by 9.3 degrees. This indicates good cooling, and I felt pretty cool when resting on it.

Edge Support 5/5

If a mattress is just as strong along the edges as it is in the center, couples and single sleepers alike can fully spread out and use the entire surface of the mattress. Strong edges also reduce the risk of the mattress sagging over time. I was extremely impressed by the edge support on the Saatva Classic, as it only sank half an inch when sitting directly on the edge. In fact, this bed has some of the best edge support I have ever seen.

Pressure Relief 4.5/5

I tested pressure relief on the Saatva Classic by using a specialized mat that senses when pressure is applied. I rolled the mat onto the mattress and layed down in different sleeping positions. The mat then translated the pressure buildup into a graphic using thermal imaging. On the Saatva Classic’s Luxury Firm model, there was a bit of pressure building at the shoulders and hips when side sleeping. I recommend side sleepers choose the Plush Soft model for more sinkage and contouring in those areas.

What Our Tester Says

“Average weight side sleepers will want to try the Plush Soft model instead of the Luxury Firm in order to get more contouring around their shoulders and hips. However, I think the Luxury Firm could work for some combination side sleepers who don’t spend the whole night in this sleeping position.”

“The mattress responded well to my movement, and I didn’t sink in too deep. I was able to turn over and switch from my back to my side to my stomach with ease. This tells me that the Saatva is going to be one of the best mattresses for sex, and a good fit for combination sleepers who switch between their back, stomach, and side during the night.”

Customer Reviews

I noticed many customers praising the support of the coils and the brand’s customer service. Saatva offers free white glove delivery, meaning they’ll send someone to not only deliver your new mattress, but set it up in your bedroom. Saatva mattresses do not arrive compressed in a box, so there’s no off-gassing period. I recommend buying online, but Saatva has viewing rooms in New York, San Francisco, Boston, Chicago, and other major cities.

The WinkBed is a luxury hybrid mattress. It has a similarly supportive and sturdy feel to a traditional innerspring mattress, but upgrades like a Euro top and cooling Tencel cover give it a touch of modern luxury. Available in three firmness levels, there is a WinkBed for just about every sleeper. And a responsive and bouncy feel makes it a great pick for combination sleepers. Learn more in our video review.

What our tester says:

“If you like the feel of a traditional innerspring mattress, the WinkBed could work for you. Since this bed offered great pressure relief around my lumbar region, I’d also recommend it to folks who suffer from lower back pain.” – Nichole Mondshein, lead reviewer and staff writer

Expert Opinion

If you’re a side sleeper who tends to run hot at night, the WinkBed may be your perfect match. This mattress is offered in three firmness levels: Softer, Luxury Firm, and Firmer. I tested the Luxury Firm model, but I would recommend the Softer model to most side sleepers, as it should provide the best pressure relief for the shoulders and hips. If you’re a heavyweight side sleeper, the Luxury Firm model could be more supportive. Overall, I think the WinkBed is the best cooling mattress for side sleepers because of its tall coil layer that provides plenty of airflow. The Euro top also contains gel-infused memory foam, which can help with cooling. Finally, the bed is topped off with a Tencel cover, a naturally breathable and moisture-wicking material.

How Did the WinkBed Perform in Testing

Motion Isolation 4/5

The WinkBed contains coils, but isn’t as bouncy as some other hybrid mattresses I’ve tried. I was eager to see how well this bed performed on my motion isolation test. Based on the seismograph, I can say this bed has good motion isolation. Although it has a layer of coils, the foam layer and plush pillow top really put in the work to absorb motion and decrease motion transfer. If you sleep with a restless partner, you’re unlikely to be woken up by their movement.

Support 4.5/5

Although the WinkBed is a luxury hybrid mattress, I thought it had a supportive fee similar to transitional innerspring mattresses. The extra-tall layer of individually wrapped coils act as the main support system. These coils feature multiple support zones, meaning their firmness fluctuates depending on where sleepers need more support. When lying on the WinkBed, I felt very lifted and supported, and my spine was properly aligned when side and back sleeping. I definitely felt more “on” the bed than “in” it, and I think sleepers looking for firmer support could really enjoy the WinkBed.

Cooling 4.5/5

The WinkBed contains several materials that are designed to promote cooling. The extra-tall layer of pocketed coils provide space inside the mattress for air to flow without becoming trapped. More cooling comes from the Tencel cover, which is naturally moisture-wicking, and the gel-infused Euro pillow top. When I used a thermal gun to record the mattress’s temperature, I found it only increased by 7 degrees after 5 minutes of resting on it. This indicates good temperature regulation. I even thought the bed was cool to the touch, so I’d definitely recommend it to hot sleepers.

Edge Support 4/5

I was impressed by the edge support on the WinkBed, especially when sitting on the edges. I used a yardstick to measure how much the bed sunk under my weight when sitting and was surprised that it had only sunk less than half an inch. I felt slightly less stable when lying on the edges, but I still think it’s strong enough for couples and people with mobility issues.

Pressure Relief 4.5/5

Using a specialized mat, I tested pressure relief on the Luxury Firm model of the WinkBed. When I took a look at the graphic afterward (called a “pressure map”), I saw an even distribution of weight and pressure when back sleeping. However, there was a bit more pressure building at the hips and shoulders when side sleeping. Because of this, I would recommend the Softer model of the WinkBed for side sleepers. This model should be just soft enough to add a bit more sinkage and prevent pain in side sleepers.

What Our Tester Says

“I recommend that [side sleepers] opt for the Softer model.”

After five minutes of lying on the WinkBed, it only increased by 7 degrees, which is a pretty good result. This indicates that the WinkBed offers good temperature regulation. That said, the moisture-wicking Tencel cover feels very breathable and airy when you rest on it.

Customer Reviews

On WinkBed’s website, many reviewers have lauded the mattress’s firmness and support. Several of these folks have pointed out that it’s especially good for sleepers who suffer from sciatica and back pain. If you want to test out the mattress yourself, WinkBed doesn’t have any of its own brick and mortar stores, but they do stock their mattress in 14 different brand partner showrooms across the United States.

“Fantastic mattress. It’s soft, but supportive. I have no issues sleeping in any position (usually side or back). If a bed is too hard my hips often hurt, but not with this bed. My kids have slept in the bed with me and my son says it’s the most comfortable bed. My boyfriend says he gets such fulfilling sleep with this mattress and is obsessed with it. Everyone who sleeps on this mattress loves it and sleeps great.” – Jennifer S.

The Nolah Evolution’s hybrid construction offers the cushioning of memory foam with the responsiveness of coils. The Luxury Firm model is a good option for side and back sleepers due to its medium-firm feel, though there are Plush and Firm versions as well. Those who share a bed may also appreciate its low motion transfer, so you won’t be disturbed by a partner’s movements and its solid edge support to allow you to maximize surface area. For more information, check out our video review.

What our tester says:

“I laid down to rest on this mattress on my back — my primary sleep position. I felt comfortable, but also appreciated the cozy, plush top of the bed. After some time lying on my back, I switched over to my side. I didn’t find this position quite as comfortable, as I did feel some slight pressure buildup in my shoulder.” – Amelia Jerden, senior staff writer

Expert Opinion

Hybrid mattresses combine the soft cushioning of all-foam beds with the sturdy coils of innerspring mattresses. I chose the Nolah Evolution as the best hybrid mattress for side sleepers due to its high-quality construction that promotes proper spinal alignment. I found a lot of sinkage and body contouring from the foam layers, which I think side sleepers will definitely appreciate. Although these foams are soft, the coils below kept my body lifted and prevented my spine from bending unnaturally. The medium-firm feel and hybrid construction of the Nolah evolution can appeal to a variety of sleepers, including back sleepers and heavy side sleepers. However, stomach sleepers may not get enough support from this bed and will likely need a firmer bed to support their hips.

How Did the Nolah Evolution Perform in Testing

Motion Isolation 4.5/5

I was super-impressed with the motion isolation on the Nolah Evolution. When I took a look at our seismograph, I saw very small lines with minimal spiking, which indicates low disturbance. Even though the bed contains bouncy coils, the top layers of foam help absorb motion and prevent it from traveling to the other side of the bed. Based on these results, I think this mattress is great for couples, especially if one or both partners tend to toss and turn. You may detect larger movements, like getting in and out of bed, but your sleep shouldn’t be disturbed otherwise.

Support 4.5/5

When I tested this bed, I found it incredibly supportive. The main support system is Nolah’s patented HDMax EcoSupport Coils, which do a great job at keeping the sleeper lifted and propping the spine into neutral alignment. The two comfort layers and transition layer were pressure relieving, but also supported my joints. The mattress’s support is enhanced even more from the inch of high-density support foam under the coils. This layer gives the coils something to bounce off of when weight is applied.

Cooling 4.5/5

As I’ve mentioned before, coils in mattresses do a lot to help with airflow and keep the bed breathable, and the coils in the Nolah Evolution do just that. Additional cooling comes from the two comfort layers. The first comfort layer contains Nolah’s ArticTex fibers, which help cool down the foam. The next layer of AirFoamICE is similar to Nolah’s proprietary AirFoam, except this foam is infused with graphite, which helps prevent heat trapping. Although I haven’t tested this mattress with our temperature-reading thermal gun yet (stay tuned), I think this bed sleeps pretty cool and can help prevent overheating.

Edge Support 4.5/5

In addition to helping with overall support, the 8-inch layer of HDMax Eco Support Coils help with support along the Nolah Evolution’s edges. The coils are wrapped with Edge-Tech support foam, which reinforces the edges and ensures the bed’s perimeter will be just as strong as the center. When I tested the edges myself, I found solid support. The edges were just as supportive as the rest of the bed, and I felt very secure.

Pressure Relief 5/5

The Nolah Evolution is a medium-firm mattress, so it should provide a nice balance between pressure relief and spinal support for side sleepers. This was confirmed by the pressure map, which shows minimal pressure building at the hips and shoulders when side sleeping. I personally felt a lot of sinkage and pressure relief in those areas when side sleeping, and felt like my joints were being hugged by the bed. Most side sleepers should be very happy on this mattress, but side sleepers with preexisting hip pain might want a bed that’s just a tad softer.

What Our Tester Says

“While laying on my side, the pressure was relieved at my shoulders and hips, resulting in comfortable sinkage.”

“Based on how the Nolah Evolution mattress performed on our tests, I believe it could be a nice pick for couples. The mattress was able to isolate motion, stay cool, and provide support across the entire surface area, all of which are important factors for couples to consider when purchasing a mattress.”

Customer Reviews

In their online reviews, several people have singled out the Nolah Evolution’s pressure-relieving abilities. One customer even described how their husband struggles with chronic hip and shoulder pain, but felt very comfortable on the Evolution after about three weeks. Customers wanting to try out the mattress themselves can do so at a handful of showrooms from Nolah’s brand partners, including the Online Mattress Showroom in Minneapolis.

“This mattress was perfect. It’s just the right amount of plush. I’m plus size and a side sleeper and don’t feel like I sink into that mattress at all. The shipping was simple and the setup was easy as well. Would buy it again next time I need a mattress.” – Jolene

Designed specifically for sleepers with back pain and joint pain, the Saatva Rx features several layers that combine both foam and coils. This creates a blend of comfort and support throughout the entire mattress that’s cushioning enough for any aches and pains while still being sturdy enough for a neutral spinal alignment. Learn more in our Saatva Rx video review.

What our tester says:

“I found that this bed has a supportive feel that easily works for people of all weights, but still feels plush and comfortable.” – Amelia Jerden, senior staff writer

Expert Opinion

If you’re a side sleeper looking for a luxury mattress made with high-quality materials, you may be interested in the Saatva Rx. The luxury feel of this mattress can be credited to its unique construction, which sandwiches foam modules between two layers of innerspring coils (one of microcoils and another of taller, individually pocketed coils at the bottom). This provides side sleepers with plenty of contouring at the shoulders and the hips, while still creating enough support for a neutral spinal alignment. In fact, I think its dynamic build should be comfortable for sleepers of all sleeping positions and body types. As a luxury mattress, this bed is on the pricier side, so I wouldn’t recommend it to shoppers on a tight budget.

How Did the Saatva Rx Perform in Testing

Motion Isolation 4.5/5

I was very satisfied with the motion isolation abilities of the Saatva Rx. When I took a look at the seismograph, there were some spiking lines, but I didn’t find these too concerning since they went right back down immediately. This tells me that you might feel large movements from a partner, such as getting out of bed, but typical tossing and turning shouldn’t wake you up.

Support 5/5

I gave the Saatva Rx 5 stars for support because of its sturdy construction that’s durable and comfortable for sleepers of all weights. The mattress contains microcoils and pocketed coils, which work together to support the spine. Additionally, the first layer of foam you’ll feel contains zoned support, so its firmness fluctuates depending on where you need the most support.

Cooling 4.5/5

The Saatva Rx is an overall good mattress for hot sleepers looking to stay cool. With a tall section of coils, there’s plenty of room for air to flow in and out of the bed without getting trapped. The organic cotton cover is naturally breathable, and the gel-infused memory foam helps the bed sleep even cooler. When I tested the Saatva Rx’s cooling abilities with a thermal gun, I recorded an 8-degree increase in temperature after laying on it for 5 minutes. This qualifies as good cooling, and I think hot sleepers can be very satisfied on this bed.

Edge Support 4/5

The edge support on the Saatva Rx is a bit all over the place. When I sat directly on the edge of the mattress, there was a lot of sinkage and the layers collapsed under my weight. When I tried actually lying on the edge, I felt much more supported and didn’t see a ton of sinkage. Edge support is the most important when you’re lying down and sleeping, so I’m satisfied with the Saatva Rx’s performance in this area.

Pressure Relief 4.5

I think the Saatva Rx is an excellent choice for side sleepers needing pressure relief. Looking at our pressure map, there’s not a whole lot of pressure building at the hips and shoulders when side sleeping. Likewise, I found great pressure relief when sleeping on my back. I felt comfortable in either sleeping position and don’t foresee pain or stiffness becoming an issue.

What Our Tester Says

“I think the Saatva Rx is a good match for average weight side sleepers. I felt my shoulder and hip were both well-cushioned while resting on my side on the Saatva Rx.”

“While lying on the bed, I experienced plushness and cushioning from the quilted cover and upper foam layers, but I felt firmly supported by the coils below. I think the unique design of this bed, with features like microcoils and the foam caps on the pocketed coils, contributes to this very balanced feel.”

– Amelia Jerden, former senior staff writer

Customer Reviews

Since the Saatva Rx is still a fairly new mattress, there aren’t a ton of reviews for it just yet on the brand’s website (99 as of this writing). But the ones that are there come out to an average customer rating of 4.8 out of 5 stars. Four of these testimonials specifically call out the bed for being comfortable for those who suffer from hip pain.

“For years, I would get up an hour or two too early because of hip pain. Two weeks ago, I replaced my foam mattress with a Saatva Rx. The very first night I got up after about 3 hours for a trip to the toilet. My hips did not hurt and have been fine ever since.” – Tony

The Bear Elite Hybrid uses foam and coils for a mix of support, cushioning, and cooling. While designed for athletes prioritizing wellness and recovery, sleepers of all activity levels can enjoy the many luxurious features. Enjoy zoned support for targeted relief, an “on top of” feel allowing for ease of movement, and cooling features throughout. For more information, watch our video review.

What our tester says:

“I’d recommend the Bear Elite Hybrid for most back and stomach sleepers.I think these sleepers will get the needed pressure relief and contouring around the lower back and hips. This mattress does a wonderful job at offering body contouring while still helping the sleeper stay elevated and lifted as well. The layers of foam should provide comfort while the coil system should offer lots of support.” – Nichole Mondshein, lead reviewer and mattress tester

Expert Opinion

The Bear Elite Hybrid was designed with athletes in mind, so it’s no surprise that it provides great support and pressure relief — both of which can help prevent back pain. Whether you sleep on your side or your back, this mattress does an excellent job at providing back support and promoting proper spinal alignment. I tested the Medium model of the Bear Elite Hybrid, which offers firmer support. For side sleepers, I think the Soft model could provide better contouring and relief for shoulder and hip pain. This bed is very supportive, but I don’t recommend it for heavy stomach sleepers (those weighing over 250 pounds).

How Did the Bear Elite Hybrid Perform in Testing

Motion Isolation 4.5/5

Based on my seismometer test, I think the Bear Elite Hybrid is a great bed for couples, or anyone co-sleeping with someone that tosses and turns. The lines on the graph are quite small, and there’s only a large spike when I dropped the steel ball from the highest level (which represents someone jumping on the bed). If you share the bed with someone else, the Bear Elite Hybrid could be a great choice for reducing sleep disturbances.

Support 4.5/5

The Bear Elite Hybrid is a very supportive mattress thanks to its coil-on-coil construction that lifts the sleeper up and out of the mattress. One layer of coils helps a lot with spinal support, but two layers makes for an ultra-supportive bed. When I tested the mattress, I felt a lot of support coming from the contour layer, a layer of foam with five zoned sections. Each section of the foam has a different firmness level depending on which part of the body needs soft contouring and which part needs firm support.

Cooling 4.5/5

With coils that promote airflow and breathable phase change material fabric, the Bear Elite Hybrid is cool to the touch and a solid choice for hot sleepers. I recorded the Bear Elite Hybrid’s temperature with a thermal gun before and after laying on it for 5 minutes, and it increased by 10 degrees. I’m pretty happy with these results, especially because I personally felt its cooling abilities when lying on it. I think the copper-infused foam does a lot to cool the sleeper down and prevent sweaty nights.

Edge Support 4.5/5

The Bear Elite Hybrid has edge-to-edge coils along its perimeter, so I had high expectations for its edge support. When sitting and laying along its sides, I felt very secure. There was some sinkage when sitting on the edge of the bed, but I didn’t feel unstable or like I was about to slip off. I felt the most supported when laying directly on the edge and thought it felt just as strong as the middle of the bed, which is excellent. The strong edges can make getting in and out of bed easier, so this mattress may appeal to people with mobility issues.

Pressure Relief 4.5/5

I was really impressed by the pressure map results for the Bear Elite Hybrid. There’s very little pressure building at the back, hips, and shoulders when side and back sleeping. My only concern is the slight pressure forming at the shoulders, knees, and lower back when side sleeping. Most side sleepers shouldn’t experience pain on this mattress, but I’d recommend side sleepers with severe joint pain to opt for the Soft model of this mattress.

What Our Tester Says

“Even though the Bear Elite Hybrid is soft, I didn’t get quite enough contouring at my shoulders and hips while in the side-sleeping position — at least on the Medium model. That said, I could see side sleepers being comfortable on the Soft model.”

“On my back, there is very little pressure buildup and only slight pressure around my hips and lower lumbar region, indicating that the Bear Elite Hybrid may work well to relieve pressure.”

– Nichole Mondshein, lead reviewer and staff writer

Customer Reviews

There are nearly 3,800 customer reviews of the Elite Hybrid on the Bear website. Although the overall star rating isn’t currently displayed, many of the reviews praise the bed for being comfortable for side sleepers. “The Bear Hybrid works well for both of us, providing a firm mattress, good side support, and workout recovery,” wrote one reviewer. As for trying out a Bear mattress in person, you can do so at select stores of their brand partners, including Brooklyn Bedding. But I think it’s easiest to purchase a new mattress online.

“Loving [the Bear Elite Hybrid] so far. Not sinking in like the old one and I can easily roll side to side and get up. I’ve slept well – no back or shoulder aches. So I am well pleased.” – Cheryl R.

The Brookyn Bedding Aurora Luxe mattress is one of Brooklyn Bedding’s more high-end mattresses. It’s got a ton of cooling features in it that can help hot sleepers sleep cool all night. It’s also available in three different firmnesses, so it can accommodate all of the sleeping positions. For more information, check out our video review.

What our tester says:

“First and foremost, I’d recommend this mattress to hot sleepers. This bed sleeps nice and cool thanks to special phase change technology and gel infusions. The Aurora Luxe is also a nice pick for back sleepers. This mattress in the Medium model is medium-soft, so it should contour the hips while also lifting them into alignment.” – Nichole Mondshein, lead reviewer and staff writer

Expert Opinion

Because side sleepers put most of their weight on their hips and shoulders when they lie down, we’ve found that they may end up with hip pain if they don’t have a bed that properly contours these areas. Brooklyn Bedding’s hybrid Aurora Luxe model tackles this issue head-on by offering three firmness levels — Soft, Medium, and Firm, with the Soft catering to folks who sleep on their side. I also really like this mattress for hot sleepers, as it’s packed with cooling technology. One group I wouldn’t recommend this mattress for is heavy sleepers (those weighing over 250 pounds). These sleepers may want a firmer mattress with additional support.

How Did the Aurora Luxe Perform in Testing

Motion Isolation 4/5

If you sleep with a partner, you may appreciate the motion isolation from the Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Luxe. The seismograph didn’t display a ton of spiking lines, and the vibrations were relatively small. If you sleep lightly, you may feel your partner moving on the other side of the mattress. However, I think most sleepers won’t experience too much disturbance from someone tossing and turning next to them. At most, you’ll likely feel them getting in and out of the bed.

Support 4.5/5

This Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Luxe is constructed with layers of premium foams and a zoned coil core. The foams help a lot with pressure relief, but the coils are the MVP when it comes to support. These coils are very tall (8 inches) and feel firmer and softer depending on what part of the body they’re supporting. I even think this mattress could be good for stomach sleepers, who typically need a lot of support to keep their hips in line with their shoulders.

Cooling 4/5

Copper and gel are two popular memory foam infusions that can help with cooling, and the Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Luxe contains a layer of each. The copper-infused layer is also treated with TitanCool, a phase change material that promotes air flow. The coils bring the bed together and add extra breathability. When using the thermal gun after laying on the bed for 5 minutes, I only found a temperature increase of 5 degrees, which indicates good cooling. Hot sleepers should feel very cool and comfortable when sleeping on this bed.

Edge Support 4/5

This mattress has great edge support. When sitting and laying on the edge of the bed, I felt super secure and didn’t feel any risk of slipping off. I used a yardstick to measure how much the layers collapsed under my weight and found only 2 inches of sinkage. If you like to spread out, you could appreciate the sturdy perimeter of this bed.

Pressure Relief 4.5/5

For side sleepers seeking pressure relief at the hips and shoulders, I would recommend the Soft model of the Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Luxe. I tested the pressure relief on the Medium model and saw some pressure building when sleeping on my side. However, I think the Soft model would provide better cushioning and body contouring for optimal pressure relief. You can also add a pillow top to this bed for an additional charge, which may be a good idea suffering from hip pain.

What Our Tester Says

“I think side sleepers wanting a bit of a firmer feel should like this mattress, although they might want to go with the Soft model over the Medium model, especially if they experience joint pain.”

“The pocketed coils ring a lot of support and heft to the structure, but the top layers of foam set the tone here, too. That tone is one of a more balanced feel, achieving some pressure relief but also some sturdiness.”

– Nichole Monshein, lead reviewer and staff writer

Customer Reviews

With over 3,000 reviews on their website, Brooklyn Bedding clearly has a lot of vocal customers. And when it comes to the Aurora Luxe, they had plenty of good things to say, especially around the mattress’s cooling ability and easy delivery. Several folks said that this bed-in-a-box is tightly rolled when it’s brought to your door, making it easy to transport and unpack. That being said, you can also try it out yourself in one of Brooklyn Bedding’s physical store locations. These showrooms are scattered across the U.S. in many states, including California, Florida, and Arizona, where the company is headquartered.

“Most comfortable bed I’ve tried. As a side-sleeper who’s experienced shoulder pain and been awoken many nights due to sleeping in uncomfortable mattresses. This has been a game changer” – Glenn W.

The Leesa Sapira Chill is a hybrid mattress, available in three firmness levels. We tested the Medium-Firm model and felt it was just softer than average, but could still work for all three sleeping positions — a rare find among mattresses. It also has some effective cooling technology built into it, which helps to keep sleepers cool throughout the night. Learn more in our video review.

What our tester says:

“I really think the medium-firm model is a great fit for all sleeping positions. Yep, the Leesa Sapira Chill is one of those unicorn mattresses that provides a great balance of comfort and support for a wide range of sleepers.” – Bridget Chapman, senior product editor

Expert Opinion

When it comes to luxury mattresses, they tend to be more expensive than standard models. However, the Leesa Sapira Chill is a luxury mattress that’s fairly affordable, relatively speaking. After discounts, you can usually find a queen size for around $1,500. For context, other luxury beds may run closer to $2,000 even after discounts. While not exactly a budget mattress, you’ll still get a lot of value for your money. I’ll note that this bed is offered in three firmness levels: Plush, Medium-Firm, and Firm. For this review, I’ll be focusing on the Medium-Firm model, which I think is an excellent option for side sleepers. If you spend part of the night on your stomach, you might find this model a bit too soft to support your hips and back.

How Did the Leesa Sapira Chill Perform in Testing

Motion Isolation 4/5

When I performed the motion isolation test on the Leesa Sapira Chill, I was happy with the results. When looking at the seismograph, the lines displayed aren’t too big, and there’s no out-of-control spikage happening. Based on these results, I think you’ll probably detect large movements, but regular tossing and turning is unlikely to disturb your sleep.

Support 4.5/5

When I tested this bed, I thought it had terrific support levels. The foam layer worked together to add cushioning as they eased my body onto the thick base layer of individually pocketed coils. Like a lot of mattresses on this roundup, the Leesa Sapira Chill contains zoned support coils to promote spinal alignment. The bed is pretty plush, but I didn’t sink too far into the layers. Most sleepers will likely feel more “on” the bed than “in” it.

Cooling 4.5/5

The Leesa Sapira Chill was designed to include cooling materials that help prevent overheating. Upon laying down, I could immediately tell that the bed was cool to the touch. According to Leesa, the cover was created with cooling fibers designed to keep your skin at 88 degrees. The mattress also includes cooling gel-infused foam and breathable pocketed coils. When I used the thermal gun on the Leesa Sapira Chill after 5 minutes of laying on it, I discovered that its temperature increased by 6.3 degrees. These are pretty good cooling results, and I think the Leesa Sapira Chill is one of the most cooling mattresses on this roundup.

Edge Support 4.5/5

The edge support on the Leesa Sapira Chill is pretty impressive. No matter how close to the edge of the bed I was, I still felt completely secure and supported. Even when sitting on the edge and putting my full weight onto the layers, I barely sank in. I think this bed could be great for folks with mobility issues or couples wanting to fully spread out.

Pressure Relief 5/5

As I mentioned earlier, this bed comes in multiple firmness options. I tested the Medium-Firm model and tested it using our pressure map. I usually recommend the softest model to side sleepers, but I found excellent pressure relief when laying in this position. I think this bed could help a lot with back, shoulder, and hip pain.

The Leesa Sapira Chill’s Medium-Firm version does well for folks in the side- and back-sleeping positions. Each map showed virtually no pressure buildup. From this, we can determine that this model of the Sapira Chill is going to be an excellent choice for back, shoulder, and hip pain.”

Customer Reviews

Many reviewing customers agree that the luxurious memory foam in the Leesa Sapira Chill makes the bed exceptionally comfortable, without feeling suffocating or hot. Many said that the plush feeling of the mattress makes it luxurious and cozy, but still offers enough support.

“We choose a firm mattress. It is perfect for us. It offers dependable support to us as side sleepers, while also allowing for a little cushy sensation as we settle in.” – Pamela L.

The Titan Plus Luxe provides a sturdy and supportive, but still comfortable and luxurious sleep experience for heavy sleepers. The medium-firm feel can work for heavy back and side sleepers, but can also work for some light and average weight folks too. This means mixed-weight couples particularly might enjoy this mattress, especially since it has excellent motion isolation and strong edge support. Learn more in our video review.

What our tester says:

“If you’re a heavy sleeper looking for a bed made of high-quality materials, the Titan Plus Luxe is a great option for you. It’s built to last and should do a great job supporting heavier sleepers, especially back, side, and combination sleepers.” – Madison Schaper, former Sleepopolis staff writer and mattress tester

Expert Opinion

Brooklyn Bedding’s Titan Plus Luxe (the luxury upgrade of the standard Titan Plus) is designed for plus-size folks, including dedicated side sleepers. When first receiving the Titan Plus Luxe, I believed that these sleepers might enjoy the combination of support and pressure relief provided by such a sturdy mattress. And to test this out, I brought in a heavier colleague, powerlifter Paulie Steinman, to try the bed. He found the Titan Plus Luxe to be about 6.5 out of 10 on the firmness scale, giving him a balanced feel that hit the sweet spot between comfort and support. He felt lifted by the mattress’s extra-tall coils while also getting some cushioning from its quilted cover and multiple layers of foam. Average weight sleepers tend to experience a mattress as slightly firmer than heavy sleepers, so they may find the Titan Plus Luxe to be closer to a 7.5 on our mattress firmness scale. Lightweight sleepers may find this mattress too firm, so we’d recommend a softer mattress with more sinkage.

How Did the Titan Plus Luxe Perform in Testing

Motion Isolation 3.5/5

When testing motion isolation on the Titan Plus Luxe, I thought it was pretty average. The 4-inch ball drop, which replicates normal tossing and turning, showed very small vibrations on the seismograph, so my expectations were high. However, as I increased the height of the ball drop, I noticed some pretty intense spiking on the graph. I don’t think sleepers will be disturbed by someone tossing and turning on the other side of the bed, but I do think they might wake up if their partner gets in and out of bed.

Support 5/5

This mattress was designed to support sleepers weighing over 250 pounds, and it lived up to our expectations. I asked Paulie to help test the Titan Plus Luxe since he falls in the heavyweight sleeper category and could provide an accurate scope of how the bed performed. When it came to support, he felt best on his side and back. The Energex foam offered the compression support his body needed, and the TitanCaliber coils helped keep him lifted.

Cooling 4.5/5

Based on the Titan Plus Luxe’s construction, I think it’s a great bed for hot sleepers. The mattress cover contained gel-infused memory foam, a material known to help draw heat away from the mattress. The individually wrapped TitanCaliber coils also add space for air to flow through the mattress instead of becoming trapped in its layers. Upon checkout, you can purchase the optional cooling top panel, which can help the bed sleep even cooler. I haven’t tested this mattress with my thermal gun yet, so stay tuned for those results.

Edge Support 4.5/5

The Titan Plus Luxe has excellent edge support. The heavy-duty edges allow heavy sleepers to sleep or sit directly on the edges and still feel incredibly supported. When Paulie tried out the edges, he felt more than supported and could use the entire surface of the bed.

Pressure Relief 4/5

Since this mattress was designed with heavier sleepers in mind, I asked Paulie to step in for the pressure map test. Looking at his results, I don’t see a ton of pressure building at the shoulders or hips when he was on his side. In fact, Paulie said he felt very comfortable and didn’t experience any stiffness or sore joints. Based on these results, I’d say the Titan Plus Luxe is great for relieving pressure for heavy side sleepers.

What Our Tester Says

This mattress is quite firm, which will allow heavy side sleepers to feel a bit of sinkage without feeling enveloped like they might on an ordinary mattress. I think this is an excellent choice for these sleepers, and so does Paulie.”

“Couples with different weights should really like the Titan Plus Luxe. It will likely feel medium firm to the heavier partner, and firm to the lighter partner — but not so firm that the lighter partner isn’t getting any pressure relief.”

– Madison Schaper, former staff writer

Customer Reviews

The Titan Plus Luxe has nearly 1,500 reviews on the brand’s website, with many heavy sleepers describing a similar experience as Paulie. Some of them also point out how cooling the mattress is, thanks to all the airflow promoted by the coils and an optional cooling top panel (note: you’ll have to pay extra for this). And while I think it’s easier (and cheaper) to buy a mattress online, you can check out the Titan Plus in person and one of Brooklyn Bedding’s many brick-and-mortar stores across the country.

“I have spinal stenosis and degenerative disc disease plus a little extra weight. I require a mattress with a lot of support. This bed is firm yet soft and has been a lifesaver.” – Rebecca D.

Hear From the Doctor: Which Features Should Side Sleepers Look for in a Mattress?

“For side sleepers, a mattress with slightly softer to medium firmness is important for cushioning the shoulders and hips. Pressure relief through contouring materials like memory foam, along with proper spinal alignment, is crucial. A supportive core prevents excessive sinking, body contouring, breathability and durability enhance comfort.” – Dr. Raj Dasgupta MD, FACP, FCCP, FAASM. Quadruple-board certified in pulmonary, sleep, internal, and critical care medicine

What to Look for In a Mattress for Side Sleepers

After reading through our picks, you might be wondering: How did Sleepopolis really land on these mattresses as the best of the best for side sleepers? It’s a great question and one we’re happy to answer.

First, we’ll start with a few features side sleepers should look for in a mattress. Next, we’ll share which firmness is best, what mattress types are ideal for side sleepers, and some mattress accessories that side sleepers might want to add to their beds.

Side Sleeper Spinal Alignment

While support is important for all sleepers to consider, it’s perhaps especially so for side sleepers, who tend to get into nighttime contortions that aren’t necessarily conducive to healthy spine alignment (think fetal position). A mattress with fantastic support will adapt to the body no matter the shape, bringing the “musculoskeletal chain,” as Dr. Poorbaugh describes it, into a comfortable synergy.

For side sleepers, we pay special attention to support in the spine, neck and head, shoulders, and hips. Maintaining proper spinal alignment throughout the night is essential for alleviating pain and pressure. Support through the shoulders and neck will also help relieve pain and help these sleepers get a restful night’s sleep.

Memory foam and latex are excellent materials for side sleepers as they provide contouring support and relieve pressure points, which helps maintain proper spinal alignment. These materials adapt to the body’s shape, ensuring that the spine stays aligned and reducing discomfort for side sleepers.

Contouring

Similar to support, contouring is especially important for side sleepers. When you sleep on your side, you’re creating uneven space between your hips and shoulders. Rather than leaving this space unsupported, you’ll want a mattress that’s going to fill it in. That’s where contouring comes in. A mattress with good contouring will give you a little boost of support where you need it and will help you feel as if the mattress is cradling you rather than pushing up against your hips and shoulders.

Memory foam mattresses are particularly good at contouring – memory foam has a slow response to pressure and is known for adapting to your body’s unique shape.

Pressure Relief and Pain Relief for Side Sleepers

When you sleep on your side, you’re putting more pressure on your hips and shoulders than you would by resting on your back or stomach. This added pressure is fine, as long as you have the right mattress. You’ll want a mattress that’s going to both support you and relieve pressure at your hips and shoulders, which should help prevent pain from developing or worsening if you already have it.

The best mattresses for pressure relief are soft mattresses. These mattresses are especially good for side sleepers because they have the give necessary to allow hips and shoulders to really sink in.

Pain Relief

Shoulder Pain

The best mattress for side sleepers with shoulder pain is going to be one that’s decidedly soft — a 5.5 out of 10 on the firmness scale or lower. If you’re like most side sleepers, you probably put more weight on your shoulders, and if you have pain in that area, you’re going to want a mattress that cushions it as much as possible.

Hip Pain

Similar to shoulder pain, if you experience hip pain, you’re likely also going to want a plush mattress that will cradle your sensitive joints. Again, a mattress that’s a 5.5 out of 10 or lower on the firmness scale is going to be best here.

Back Pain

If you’re a side sleeper who suffers from back pain, your main focus should be finding a bed that helps you achieve a neutral spine alignment. Keeping your spine in a straight line is key to preventing and alleviating pain, since straight is the spine’s natural position. The right mattress for you is going to be one that allows your hips and shoulders to sink at a level that helps you achieve that ideal neutral spinal alignment. We’d recommend seeing if a mattress has zoned support, which means that the mattress has different firmness levels (or zones, if you will) built into it to support all the different areas of your body.

Neck Pain

If you suffer from neck pain as a side sleeper, look for a mattress with medium to medium-firmness (6-7 on our firmness scale) to ensure proper spinal alignment and alleviate pressure points. Materials like memory foam or latex are ideal for pressure relief, as they conform to the body and provide cushioning in your neck and hips especially. Good edge support is also important for ease of movement and stability when getting in and out of bed.

What is the Best Mattress Firmness for Side Sleepers?

In terms of firmness, side sleepers will want to look for something soft to moderate on the firmness scale. While many folks assume firmer mattresses are the most supportive, a special exception needs to be made for those who spend most of their slumber time on their sides. A mattress that is more plus will help with pressure relief across your hips and shoulders, which are important areas for side sleepers to relieve pressure. We recommend a mattress that is around a 4.5 to a 6 out of 10 on our firmness scale.

Firmness

Side sleepers are usually most comfortable on a soft to medium-firm mattress. Although they need some density and support, it’s important that there’s enough plushness in the bed’s construction to contour their shoulders and hips.

We recommend that they don’t go firmer than a 6.5 out of 10 on our mattress firmness scale. For context, the mattresses on this list range from 5.5 to 6.5, or come in several different firmness options, including a soft model.

Body Type

How a mattress feels and performs is largely dependent on the sleeper’s body weight and shape. When I look for the best mattress for side sleepers, I consider all body types to ensure each individual can find the best bed for them. When we test these mattresses, our team of Certified Sleep Science Coaches consider various weights, heights, and shapes and then make specific recommendations.

For example, a mattress may feel softer to a heavier sleeper (weighing over 250 pounds) than an average weight sleeper simply because they’ll sink further into the mattress’s layers. Likewise, lightweight sleepers (those weighing less than 130 pounds) typically experience mattresses as slightly firmer because they won’t find as much sinkage.

Lightweight SleepersAverage Weight SleepersHeavyweight Sleepers
Less than 130 pounds130 – 250 poundsMore than 250 pounds

What Kind of Mattress is Best for a 250 lbs Side Sleeper?

Typically, side sleepers need softer mattresses that provide plenty of body contouring and pressure relief at the shoulders and hips. However, heavier side sleepers may sink too far into the soft layers and not find enough support to promote proper spinal alignment. These sleepers may prefer a medium-firm hybrid or pillow-top mattress they’ll still find contouring at sensitive pressure points but will feel more supported.

For our favorite matresses designed with these folk in mind, head over to our best mattress for heavy sleepers roundup.

Materials

When it comes to the best mattress materials for side sleepers, it depends on preference. They’ll definitely want a layer of foam that can offer contouring at the shoulders and hips, but the level of pressure relief varies depending on the foam’s source. For instance, memory foam is soft and has a very slow response to pressure, resulting in a hug-like feel. Latex foam can also be pressure relieving, but is bouncier and has a faster response to pressure, resulting in more of an “on top of” feel.

Regardless of what kind of foam is in their mattress, side sleepers will also want some kind of support core. This can come from a denser poly foam at the bottom of the mattress, or a layer of coils if it’s a hybrid mattress. Read more on the different types of mattresses below.

Hear From the Doctor: How Can Different Mattress Types Affect our Anatomy?

“Memory foam contours for personalized support but may retain heat. Latex offers resilience and allergen resistance. Innerspring mattresses provide firmer support and motion transfer. Hybrid mattresses blend foam and coils for balanced comfort and cooling. Gel-infused mattresses regulate temperature. Pillow-top mattresses offer extra cushioning but may lose effectiveness over time. The impact varies mostly on factors like body weight and sleeping positions.” – Dr. Raj Dasgupta MD, FACP, FCCP, FAASM. Quadruple-board certified in pulmonary, sleep, internal, and critical care medicine

Price/Budget

A high-quality mattress for side sleepers is usually going to be between around $1,000 to $2,500 for a queen size (this is before any promotions or discounts). For context, the mattresses on this list range from $1,043 to $2,849 at the time of this writing (the higher end comes from a couple luxury mattresses). However, there are several budget options out there that could be a good fit. See the below lists for some of the most affordable mattresses.

Warranties, Shipping & Sleep Trials

When searching for a mattress for side sleepers its important to look into mattress companies and brands that prioritize their shoppers by offering great warranties, shipping, and sleep trials. When testing mattresses, I want to make sure you are not shocked by any added costs when buying your new mattress. To help you out, I looked into the warranty, sleep trial, and shipping and handling of all of these mattresses.

Mattress Warranties

A mattress warranty is how long a company guarantees your mattress will last. This can be a great indicator of a mattress’s durability and how long the company predicts it will last. Every company offers a different length of warranty however I recommend a 10-year to lifetime warranty. Typically affordable mattresses tend to have a shorter warranties however this doesn’t necessarily mean these mattresses aren’t worth the purchase, it’s just important to keep the warranty in mind when looking at side sleeper mattresses.

Shipping & Handling

The biggest benefit about buying a mattress online is being to have your new mattress shipped right to your door. To cut the added expense, I’ve made sure that each mattress on this list offers free shipping. For an added cost, some companies offer white glove delivery which involves hand delivery to your door. They also bring your mattress straight to your room, unbox everything and remove your old mattress.

Shipping can also be very expensive if you are purchasing internationally, so I also looked into some of the best Canadian mattresses to help you navigate international mattress shopping.

Sleep Trials

Sleep Trials are crucial especially for side sleepers because it allows you to test your new mattress for 30, 60 or 90 days (depending on the brand), for you to determine if the mattress suits your sleep preferences. The purpose of sleep trials for side sleepers is for you to determine if the mattress is relieving the right pressure, and is comfortable for you and/or your partner.

How We Test the Best Mattresses for Side Sleepers

Here at Sleepopolis, we test each and every mattress in all three sleeping positions: back, side, and stomach. This first part of our process isn’t exactly rocket science; if you feel comfortable while lying on your side, chances are that the mattress is a good fit for side sleepers. But we also go beyond that initial step, running each bed through a battery of tests for a more scientific conclusion of who the mattress might be the best match for. In the case of side sleepers, we pay special attention to something called a pressure map.

Pressure Relief

A pressure map is a pad that I roll across the surface of a mattress. I lie down on it in different positions, and then it uses heat-mapping technology to visually display how much pressure is building up on various parts of our body. Blue indicates low pressure, green indicates moderate pressure, and yellow, orange, and red indicate high pressure.

See on the right, the results from the Helix Midnight for an example (this image also includes back sleeping).

PressureMap HelixMidnight

Because side sleepers put the most weight on their shoulders and hips while lying down, I want to see little to no pressure in these areas. So if the pressure map displays blue or green at the shoulders and hips while our tester is side sleeping — like it does on the Helix Midnight above — the bed is going to be a good fit for this position.

One caveat: the tiny spot of yellow suggests a small amount of pressure, which might be felt by anyone who struggles with hip pain. That’s the beauty of the pressure map; it allows us to make hyper-specific recommendations. In this case, I recommend the Helix Midnight for side sleepers in general, but not if they tend to experience hip pain.

Cooling

When testing mattresses, we make sure to look at cooling properties using a temperature control gun.
An example of our thermal gun test.

Staying cool throughout the entire evening is a key component of staying comfortable and getting good, quality sleep. However, some mattresses are more breathable and cool than others, and it can be challenging to know exactly how cool your mattress will be. This is why I test the cooling capabilities of every mattress I review, so I can help you find exactly what you are looking for.

To test the cooling abilities of the mattresses on this list, I first look out for cooling materials and construction. Features like coils, gel-infused foams, and breathable layers are generally indicative of a cooling mattress. After I examine these features, I use a temperature gun to measure the temperature of each mattress in its standing state and after someone has laid on it. The difference between the temperatures tells us how good the mattress is a cooling and temperature regulation. If it increases more than 15 degrees Fahrenheit, I consider the bed to have poor cooling capabilities. 10 to 15 degrees indicates decent cooling, 5 to 10 degrees indicates good cooling, and less than 5 degrees indicates excellent cooling.

Motion Isolation

Motion transfer refers to the amount of movement that can be felt throughout the bed when you, your partner, kids or pets move around.

The last thing you want is to be woken up from a deep sleep, especially for side sleepers who might rotate and switch to the other shoulder. To test for motion isolation, I use a red wine test and a ball drop test.

A look at the Sleepopolis Seismograph test for motion isolation
Seismometer results for motion transfer.

Our ball drop test involved dropping a steel ball from various heights and measuring how much movement ripples through the bed using a seismograph machine. If the seismograph shows large waves, like the graph to the left, then it has poor motion isolation. Our red wine test involves putting a glass of red wine on a mattress and moving around to see if the glass tips over. How much movement causes the glass to tip is how I measure motion isolation in this test.

An example of the Sleepopolis Red Wine Test
Our tester Nichole using the red wine test to measure motion transfer.

Hear From the Doctor: What Does Motion Transfer have to do with the Quality of a Mattress?

Motion transfer refers to how movement on one side of a mattress affects the other side. The quality of a mattress is linked to its ability to minimize motion transfer. A mattress with good motion isolation offers undisturbed sleep, comfort for couples, personalized support, pressure relief, versatility, a quiet sleep environment, longevity and minimized partner disturbance. It indicates material quality, construction and overall comfort. Considering motion isolation is crucial, especially for shared beds or sensitivity to movement.” – Dr. Raj Dasgupta MD, FACP, FCCP, FAASM. Quadruple-board certified in pulmonary, sleep, internal, and critical care medicine

Edge Support

Nichole doing the yardstick test on the Novaform ComfortGrande Advanced Gel Memory Foam Mattress
Nichole measuring a bed’s edge support.

Edge support refers to the strength of the edges of your mattress. If you push down on the sides of your mattress and the edges easily sink in, then the bed likely has poor edge support. This can often be the case in all foam or latex mattresses, which do not have as much support or reinforcement from coils as hybrid or innerspring mattresses. Edge support is important for side sleepers because it affects the amount of space you can use on the mattress, as well as the durability. If you sleep on your side, you may often find yourself sleeping closer to the edge of the mattress. If this is the case, weak edges will make your mattress sag when you sleep closer to the edge. This can also cause premature sagging across the mattresses, and earlier deterioration. It may also be important for couples who want to use the entirety of the bed, and elderly people who need extra support getting in and out of bed.

We test for edge support by pushing on and sitting on the edges of the mattress. The easier I find it is to push the edges down, the worse edge support the mattress has. Additionally, I use a yard stick or tape measure to measure exactly how much the edges sag when I sit or push down on them. The farther down the edges of the mattress sink, the worse edge support it has.

What is the Best Type of Mattress for Side Sleepers?

Sleepopolis testing of mattress materials
A closer look at the different mattress materials.

We could make the argument for any type of mattress to be the best type for side sleepers, it really all depends on the sleeper’s body type, body weight, special concerns / preferences and what they really need out of a mattress.

Memory Foam Mattresses

Memory foam mattresses can be a good option for side sleepers because it cradles the areas that can sometimes feel “jammed” into a mattress. Memory foam is the best material for contouring to the body (think filling in where your body naturally lifts and sinking where your body applies more pressure), which can be great for people who have certain pain concerns and are looking for some relief.

That being said, the material can get tricky for side sleepers if the bottom layer of foam is too soft that there’s nothing to stop the body from sinking all the way into the bed frame. This is usually a more common problem for heavier side sleepers.

Hybrid Mattresses

Hybrid mattresses are one of the most universal options for most sleeping positions, and side-sleeping is no different. A hybrid mattress is a combination of a coil base with either a foam or latex layer(s) on top. This construction results in a mattress that can be very supportive, but also has that cushioning, cradling feeling that a lot of side sleepers look for. Memory foam hybrid mattresses are also a great option for couples because the coils make them easy to move around on. while the foam absorbs a lot of the movement. The coils also allow for additional airflow, making these mattresses more breathable than solid memory foam beds.

Latex Mattresses

Most latex mattresses on the market are technically “latex hybrids,” meaning they have a coil base with a layer of latex on top. Latex beds are known for their bouncy surface and their tendency to be more naturally sourced. If you’re a strict side sleeper, you’ll want to make sure the supportive latex has enough give for your hips and shoulders. Latex mattresses are also a good option for combination sleepers who move between being back sleepers, side sleepers, and stomach sleepers all in one night.

Innerspring Mattresses

Innerspring mattresses are the most traditional type of mattress. The majority of their materials are made of innerspring coils, which are typically constructed from steel. These coils give the mattress a bouncy feel and provide plenty of responsiveness (think the opposite of memory foam). However, side sleepers beware — these mattresses tend to be on the firmer side. If you’re a fan of that classic innerspring feel and sleep on your side, I’d check to make sure the mattress is going to be soft enough to prevent jamming at your shoulders and undue pressure at your hips.

Mattress Accessories for Side Sleepers

Pillows

Good pillows are just as important as a good mattress. You may have an exceptionally well-made and comfortable mattress, but without a good pillow, you may still find that your sleeping experience is less than ideal.

A high-quality pillow is critically important for side sleepers due to their increased — and somewhat more complex — support needs. (3) Pillows made from latex, shredded foam, memory foam, or other poly foams can help provide consistent and stable support by responding to the varying pressures of your head and neck. Additionally, you’ll want to look for a pillow that is tall enough to cradle your head and neck but not so tall that you introduce a new form of pressure. “Improved [spinal] alignment… can be easily achieved inside lying with proper pillow positioning,” explains Dr. Poorbaugh.

Side sleepers need a pillow that’s tall enough to cradle their heads.

Using a Pillow for Spinal Alignment

Keith Poorbaugh, a licensed physical therapist, suggests using pillow placement to help with spinal alignment during the night. He recommends placing your pillow under both your head and neck to avoid kinking your neck or putting too much pressure on the neck during the evening. He also explains that sleeping with a pillow between your knees may help keep the spine and hips in a neutral alignment when sleeping on your side. This can help alleviate pain in the back, hips, and neck when side sleeping.

Mattress Toppers

Mattress toppers can be a great way for side sleepers to add some plushness to their mattress. If your mattress is slightly firmer than you’d like, a quality mattress topper can create a softer overall feel, helping you achieve that perfect side sleeper firmness.

We’d recommend going for a taller-profile mattress topper if you’re a side sleeper. A mattress topper of at least three inches will allow lots of room for you to sink into the material, providing cushioning around the shoulder and hip for needed pressure relief.

One of our best plush mattress toppers is a good place to start — or take a look at our best mattress toppers for side sleepers.

We also particularly like memory foam mattress toppers for side sleepers. This is because memory foam toppers are typically made to provide more pressure relief, and tend to have a soft, squishy feel. Memory foam is a great material for those who doze on their sides because it offers plenty of contouring, which helps cradle side sleepers’ shoulders and hips and fill in the space between.

Health Concerns for Side Sleepers

Shoulder Pain

Side sleepers may experience shoulder pain due to pressure on the shoulder joint and improper alignment; choosing a mattress with ample pressure relief and cushioning, such as memory foam or latex, can help alleviate this issue.

Hip Pain

Pressure on the hip can lead to discomfort if the mattress is too firm and not cushioning around your pressure points; opting for a mattress that offers good contouring and support, such as a hybrid or memory foam mattress, can reduce hip pain.

Spinal Misalignment

Improper support can cause spinal misalignment and back pain; selecting a mattress with proper firmness and support, ideally one that maintains a neutral spine position, can help resolve this concern.

A Look Into the Sleepopolis Testing Lab

sweetnight prime side sleeper

In order to ensure that we’re recommending the best mattresses to sleepers everywhere, we test each one individually in our mattress lab in Raleigh, North Carolina. Here, our team of Certified Sleep Science Coaches has reviewed more than 300 beds, putting each one through a rigorous testing process that includes measuring a mattress’s motion transfer with a seismometer, tracking its cooling capabilities with a thermal gun, and visualizing its ability to relieve pain with a pressure map.

From there, we give every bed an overall score based on its materials, comfort, support, cooling, edge support, and more. We also factor in brand performance with categories such as value and warranty.

We know that sleep is an integral part of your health, which is why we’ve developed such a detailed methodology when testing mattresses and writing our reviews. We also know that every sleeper is different when it comes to body type, sleeping position, and mattress preference. With so many factors at play, we want to give you an informed opinion so you can make an informed purchase.

How We Chose These Mattresses

When handpicking the best mattresses for side sleepers this roundup, we first and foremost considered the pressure relief results and materials scores in our Sleepopolis mattress lab. Because side sleepers put the most pressure on their shoulders and hips, we wanted to make sure the mattress’ pressure map results showed adequate pressure relief. None of the products included here are likely to put added pressure on these areas.

Additionally, we wanted to ensure that these mattresses have quality foams and materials to provide not just quality pressure relief, but long-lasting pressure relief. When testing each bed, we found that all 10 of these mattresses scored at least a 4 in materials.
