Construction

Layers

The Brentwood Home Coronado mattress consists of 5 foam layers, combining for a total height of 14″.

  • Cover – 1″ quilted cover with soft foam. Adds extra pressure relief, very classic and traditional feel.
  • Top layer (cooling & comfort) – 3″ of gel memory foam. This top layer works to provide the contour and cooling for the mattress. The gel memory foam provides a sharp contour while also pulling heat away from the sleeping surface.
  • 2nd layer (support) – 2″ of ventilated polyurethane foam. The middle layer provides support for the sleeper in addition to airflow in and out of the mattress. The ventilated foam allows the mattress to breathe much easier, helping to reinforce the cooling attributes of the top layer.
  • 3rd Layer (support) – 1″ of polyurethane foam. This layer acts as a transitional support foam to help ease the comfort layers into the base for a consistent feel.
  • Bottom layer (foundation) – 6″ of high density support foam. This layer acts as the foundational base for the mattress as well as the deep compression support.

Cover

The cover of the Coronado mattress is quite nice. In terms of materials, the side panels consist of wool and polyester. The top of the cover is a soft, quilted layer of foam that helps to bring added softness and pressure relief to the mattress. Running along the perimeter of the mattress are 4 handles (total) which help make moving the mattress a whole lot easier.

From an aesthetic standpoint, the Coronado is very nice. The mixture of colors, materials, and a Belgian knit make for a pleasing appeal. You’re really getting the best of both worlds with this cover. Brentwood Home went away from what has become the staple aesthetic (a basic single color side panel and thin white top knit layer) and created a mattress with a great balance between modern and classic looks.

My favorite part of this cover is simply the handles. Any mattress that’s much over 10″ isn’t going to be light or easy to move. Having the handles helps to ensure you can easily setup and move the mattress around, helping to prevent potential damage. The handles are quite sturdy. My cousin, Chris, and I were able to easily lift the mattress off the ground and the handles showed no signs of tearing off.

Firmness, Feel, & Support

The Brentwood Home Coronado mattress falls between a 5-5.5 out of 10 on the firmness scale (10 being the most firm). They have designed this mattress with intentions of fitting the needs of most sleepers.

Brentwood Coronado firmness - 5 out of 10 on the firmness scale (10 being the most firm)

For starters, the Coronado mattress has a great balance between sinkage and hug. This combination also allows for good support all throughout your body. Not to mention, the quilted cover offers good pressure relief making this mattress a good fit for both back and side sleepers. While sleeping on my stomach, I felt as if the mattress was slightly too soft. As I rolled over to my side I was very impressed with the pressure relief provided to my joints (shoulders, hips, knees, etc.)

in addition to the consistent spinal alignment throughout my sleep cycle. My wife is mainly a back sleeper and was able to relay almost identical notes. Per our conversation, she told me she never once felt as if she was unsupported by this mattress.

FAQ:  What mattress firmness do you need?

The overall contour of the Coronado was an additional benefit. If you’re a fan of the more traditional memory foam contour, this mattress is most certainly one to consider. As I initially lied down on the mattress, there was a contour around my body that almost felt natural. There was no stuck or trapped feeling by the foams. Instead, the quilted cover and memory foam top layer worked together to provide a very nice, supportive, hug around my body.

Although the response time of this mattress is not extremely fast, I would not consider it to be very slow by any stretch. Personally, I believe the mattress does a great job allowing you to move comfortably. In other words, you receive that classic memory foam hug but still have the ability to switch positions, with ease, at any time. A vast majority of the more traditional mattresses cannot say the same about their products performance or ease of movement.

Another positive attribute about the Brentwood’s Coronado mattress was motion transfer. The memory foam layers and padded quilted cover do a great job of dispersing motion across the mattress. My wife is much more of a “mobile” sleeper during the night. Even with her extra movements I rarely felt them through the mattress. Now, with the minimal motion transfer you do give up a certain degree of bounce and response, which some dislike for the purposes for sex. In any case, it’s a bit of a trade off either way.

Sinkage Tests

All mattress reviews on Sleepopolis go through a short series of sinkage tests. These tests are deigned to provide you with insight on how the mattress will perform under various conditions.

  • Lying on back – as I lied down on my back with my weight spread evenly across the mattress, I saw 1-2″ of sinkage.
  • Lying on side – while lying on my side, I saw 1.5-2″ of sinkage.
  • Sitting on edge (conservative)  – in a normal sitting position with my butt slightly further back on the mattress, I saw 3.5″ of sinkage.
  • Sitting on edge (aggressive) – as I sat on the direct edge of the mattress, I saw 4″ of sinkage.
  • Standing in the middle – with all of my weight placed at one point on the mattress, I saw 4.5-5″ of sinkage.

Keep in mind, sinkage results may vary based on body weight and body type. As a reference point, I weigh 140 pounds.

Who Should Buy the Brentwood Home Coronado Mattress?

I would recommend the Coronado mattress to sleeper who:

  • Want a true medium feel – the Coronado mattress comes in with a medium soft feel, landing at a 5-5.5 out of 10 on the firmness scale, where 10 is the most firm.
  • Want pronounced hug and sinkage – the Coronado has a memory foam feel, which means deeper hug and more sinkage, however, it’s not nearly as slow as more traditional memory foam mattresses in terms of response. Additionally, the combination of aerated polyfoam + gel memory foam do a good job of helping to keep heat in check.
  • Want good edge support – perhaps the most impressive attribute of this mattress is simply the edge support. Usually when you have memory foam + a softer feel you end up with edges that are super unsupportive. The Coronado helps us very well for both sitting, sleep, and sex on the edge. It’s one of the very best edge support systems I’ve seen in a memory foam mattress.

Summary

The Brentwood Coronado mattress is a luxury memory foam / polyfoam mattress with a traditional quilted padded cover. At a 5 out of 10 on the firmness scale, the Coronado has a medium soft feel with lots of hug and lots of sinkage. The response and bounce is average, but where you’d expect it to be for memory foam. A great choice for side sleepers and some back sleepers (provided you like the softer feel). Quite good edge support considering the level of softness.
