Is the Mend Renew a Good Mattress for You?
Like every mattress, the materials and feel of this one will work for some sleepers better than others. So let’s first start off by talking about who I do and don’t recommend the Mend Renew for.Who I recommend the Mend Renew for
- I think this bed is a great fit for back and side sleepers. It’s comfortable, supportive, and provides the right amount of pressure relief for these types of sleepers.
- If you’re a hot sleeper, I think you’ll enjoy the cool-to-the-touch Tencel cover this bed has to keep you cool.
- This bed is a good choice for people searching for an affordably priced mattress with a luxury feel. At full retail, it’s currently less than $1,225 for a queen size. You can also always add our coupons for an even better deal.
Who I don’t recommend the Mend Renew for
- I think this is going to be too soft of a bed for most stomach sleepers. They typically need a firm bed to keep their hips elevated and spine aligned. Take a look at our roundup of the best mattresses for stomach sleepers for some other firm mattress options.
- If you enjoy a quicksand feel in a bed, then this probably won’t meet your needs. It’s more bouncy and responsive than it is slow-moving. You could check out an all-foam or memory foam mattress instead.
- Lastly, if you want to have some customization with the feel of your mattress, you might want to look at Mend Sleep’s Mend Adapt mattress instead of the Mend Renew. The Mend Adapt has two different firmness levels you can choose between by flipping over its top layer.
How Firm is the Mend Renew?
It’s important to note firmness is subjective. How firm a mattress feels to you depends on your body weight, shape, and preferred sleeping position. Since firmness can be a little subjective as well, I polled a range of coworkers and averaged our scores and firmness levels together.
We use a firmness scale of 1 to 10. I ultimately gave the Mend Renew a firmness rating of 6 out of 10. We use 6.5 as the standard for medium firm, so this mattress is a hair softer than average.
The Mend Renew allows you to sink in a little bit with its plush and cushiony Euro top, but you’ll still feel elevated on it. It has a responsive feel, which is great news for combination sleepers who move around in the night.

Is the Mend Renew a Good Mattress for Average Weight Sleepers (130 – 250 lb)?
- Average Weight Back Sleepers – The Mend Renew is a great option for average weight back sleepers. They should get the right amount of sinkage around the hips to keep their spine in alignment.
- Average Weight Side Sleepers – The Mend Renew should feel comfy for most of these sleepers. They should get the right amount of pressure relief around the shoulder and hip area.
- Average Weight Stomach Sleepers – I’d recommend looking for a firmer mattress than the Mend Renew for these sleepers. They want a bed that will keep their hips lifted up in line with their shoulders, in order to prevent back pain.
Is the Mend Renew a Good Mattress for Heavy Sleepers (over 250 lb)?
- Heavy Back Sleepers – I think these sleepers should feel supported and comfortable on the Mend Renew, thanks to its pocketed coil system.
- Heavy Side Sleepers – I think these sleepers will sink into this mattress enough to feel the pressure-relieving benefits of the Euro top and foams inside.
- Heavy Stomach Sleepers – This mattress will be too soft for heavy stomach sleepers. I’d check out our roundup of the best mattresses for heavy people for other options.
Mend Renew Pain Relief Performance
Pressure relief should be important to everyone searching for a bed. That’s because it’s a good sign of how well the mattress can alleviate joint and back pain. In order to test a mattress’s pressure-relieving abilities, I use a pressure map, which uses heat mapping technology to show where pressure’s building across my body when I lay on a bed. Results appear on a color-coded map: Blue/green show areas of low pressure, and red/orange show areas of high pressure. Take a look at the results below, and then read on to see what they could mean if you sleep with pain.
Back Pain – Back sleeping is all blue on this bed, which is a great sign for back sleepers with back pain. I think their joints will feel cushioned and comfortable. Side sleepers with back pain should also feel the bed conform to their body, bringing them nice pressure relief. However, stomach sleepers with back pain will want a firmer option in order to promote spinal alignment.
Shoulder Pain – This mattress has great results for back sleepers with shoulder pain. I think their shoulder joints will be nicely cradled by the Euro top. There’s a touch of yellow forming around my shoulder when side sleeping, so I may suggest a one of our best mattresses for side sleepers if you have severe shoulder pain and sleep on your side. On the other hand, a firmer mattress will be the best mattress option for stomach sleepers with shoulder pain.
Hip Pain – Again, back sleepers should feel no pressure building up on this bed, so it’d be a great option for back sleepers with hip pain. I also think the Mend Renew could work nicely for side sleepers with hip pain. But once more, it’s too soft of a mattress for stomach sleepers, especially ones with pain.
Mend Renew Performance for Couples
The best mattress for couples will often have strong motion isolation, responsiveness, cooling features, and edge support. Below, I’ll let you know how the Mend Renew performs in each category.Motion Transfer
Motion transfer is a measure of how movement carries from one side of the bed to the other. If you share a bed with a partner or a pet, this is a measure of how disturbed you’ll feel when your partner rolls around or your pet jumps off the bed. To test motion transfer, I put a seismometer down where you would be sleeping, then dropped a 10-pound steel ball from various heights onto the other side of the bed.
The seismometer results show solid motion isolation on the Mend Renew. You can see the waves don’t get much bigger when the ball dropped from larger heights too — this is a good sign you won’t feel your partner moving around in the night.
Sex
The best mattress for sex is bouncy and responsive, which makes it easy to move around. I think the Mend Renew is both of those things, and a good pick for sex.Cooling
Couples tend to overheat more quickly than those who sleep alone, so they often want a cooling mattress. The Mend Renew’s cooling cover, gel-infused foams, and coils all help keep body heat away. I think it’s a good cooling option.Edge Support
Edge support measures how well the perimeter of a bed supports weight. This is important if you like to sit or sleep near the side of the mattress or edge of the bed. Strong edges make a bed feel larger, which is a perk for many couples as you can use more of the sleep surface. Cover — The top layer of the Mend Renew is a breathable Tencel cover with one inch of foam quilted inside. The cover holds an OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certification, which means it’s hypoallergenic, skin-friendly, and free of toxic substances.
Comfort Layer — Below the cover is a layer of gel memory foam. This foam layer allows you to get a little bit of cushioning in the mattress, ultimately bringing pressure relief. It’s specifically a cooling gel-infused air-cell foam to keep the bed from trapping body heat. All the foams in the Mend Renew meet CertiPUR-US quality standards, which means they’re free of harmful substances.
Support Layer — The final layer of the mattress is pocketed coils to bring durability and support. They also help promote airflow.
