Everyone needs a mattress that prevents pressure from building up while they rest. To determine if a mattress is up to the task of relieving pressure, we rely on two tests. First, we lie on the mattress to see how it feels in different sleeping positions, and then we take thermal images called pressure maps to evaluate any areas where pressure may be present. The majority of the mattresses on this list earned a 4 out of 5 or higher in the pressure relief category.

Our testers generating pressure maps

When it comes to support, your bed should maintain the natural S-curve of your spine with the right balance of sinkage and lift. This support should extend from corner to corner, so you feel just as stable at the perimeter as you do in the center. Robust edge support also points toward better durability, which is why we prioritized mattresses that scored at least a 4 out of 5 in the edge support category.

Studies show that sleeping in a too-hot environment can hinder your sleep quality. If you tend to sleep hot, live in a warmer climate, or share a bed with a partner, finding a mattress that can effectively regulate temperature is essential. Mattresses with pillow-top layers tend to retain more heat because they are soft, dense, and typically don’t offer much ventilation. Our in-house testers measure the surface temperature of each mattress with a thermal gun before and after lying on it for 5 minutes. Most of the mattresses on this list offer the best of both worlds: plush, doughy surfaces and excellent temperature control.

We’ve developed a rigorous testing methodology that tells us how each mattress performs and who it might be a good fit for. All of the beds on this list have been evaluated for pressure relief, cooling abilities, responsiveness, edge support, and much more.

Our team of certified sleep science coaches has tested more than 500 mattresses over the last decade, allowing us to guide more than 145,000 people to the best mattress for them. Not only do we use and evaluate these products ourselves, but we also consult with doctors and other professionals to ensure we keep up to date with the latest in sleep science and medicine. For example, Dr. Joe Tedesco (DPT, OCS, ATC, CSCS) comes into our studio to personally test mattresses and give a medical perspective on each product.

Helix has a line of six hybrid mattresses, each with a different level of firmness. The Midnight is one of their medium models. It has enough contouring for side sleepers, but should still be supportive enough for back sleepers, as long as they don’t mind a softer bed. Learn more in our video review.

What our tester says:

“I like the Helix Midnight Luxe for back sleepers and side sleepers. The medium-soft to medium-firm feel should give these folks the right balance of comfort and support.” – Nichole Mondshein, lead reviewer and mattress tester

Why It’s the Best Overall Pillow-Top Mattress

  • Our testers loved the Helix Midnight Luxe’s cushioned surface, which delivered excellent pressure relief across every sleeping position.
  • The Midnight Luxe’s strong edge support makes it easier to get in and out of bed while giving couples more space to move around on.
  • With its breathable design and cool-to-the-touch surface, the Helix Midnight Luxe effectively dissipates heat.

Dr. Tedesco’s Notes

During testing, Dr. Joe Tedesco, our chief medical product tester and licensed physical therapist, praised the mattress for its ability to relieve pressure in the side-sleeping position while maintaining proper support.

“Sleeping on my side, I notice my pelvis is being supported and lifted, which helps open up space in the lower back and creates a therapeutic sensation,” he said.

Our Expert Opinion

The Helix Midnight Luxe is a standout mattress for anyone seeking a balanced mix of pressure relief, support, and mobility. In fact, it scored a 4 out of 5 or higher in key categories including edge support, pressure relief, and motion isolation. After thoroughly testing the Helix Midnight Luxe, my fellow mattress testers and I rated it a 6.5 out of 10 on the firmness scale, placing it right in the medium-firm category. This firmness level is perfect for those who prefer a mattress that offers a bit of give without being too soft or too firm.

In fact, there weren’t many weaknesses to note about the Helix Midnight Luxe, as it scored 4 or higher in nearly every category during testing. My only criticism is that Helix offers a shorter sleep trial than I would like to see, with just 120 nights.

Choose the Helix Midnight Luxe if …
  • You are a side-sleeper seeking a balanced, pressure-relieving feel. During testing, we found that the pillow-top cover was soft enough to cradle pressure-prone areas like the hips and shoulders.
  • You have mobility concerns. If you’re someone who relies on the edge of the bed to get up in the morning, you should have no trouble doing so on the supportive perimeter of the Helix Midnight Luxe.
Keep looking if …
  • You want a longer sleep trial to see if the mattress is right for you. Helix only offers a 120-night sleep trial. While this isn’t a bad trial, there are brands that offer a 365-night trial, giving you plenty of time to live with a new bed and see if it’s the right option for you.
  • You prefer an ultra-firm and supportive mattress. The soft pillow-top layer gives the Helix Midnight Luxe a more plush feel. If you’re someone who prefers a mattress that is on the firmer side, consider checking out the Helix Dawn instead.

The Saatva’s coil-on-coil construction provides a classic innerspring feel. It’s a good option for combo sleepers, who will want to feel free to switch positions and avoid feeling “stuck” in the mattress. It comes in three firmness levels, so you should be able to find one that suits your needs. The white glove delivery Saatva provides is an added perk and will save you the headache of getting rid of your old mattress (they take it away for free!). For more information, watch our video review.

What our tester says:

“I think the Saatva is a great option for back sleepers, as the Luxury Firm model provides enough cushioning for their lumbar region, but also lots of support to keep their spine in a neutral alignment.” – Nichole Mondshein, lead reviewer and staff writer

Why It’s the Best Pillow-Top Mattress for Stomach Sleepers

  • The Saatva Classic is a 7.5 out of 10 on our firmness scale and highly supportive, so stomach sleepers should be able to lie on this mattress and get enough lift in their hips to align their spines.
  • The edge-to-edge support of the Saatva makes it so you can rest on the perimeter of the mattress without feeling like you are going to roll off.
  • The Saatva earned a perfect 5-star score in responsiveness, meaning it is incredibly easy to reposition and get comfortable on this bed.

Pressure Relief: 4/5

Dr. Tedesco’s Notes

While Dr. Joe Tedesco doesn’t often give his stamp of approval to mattresses for stomach sleepers, he gave the Saatva Classic high praise during testing.

“When you lie on your stomach, your back often wants to arch,” he explained. “The springs provide enough support that you don’t sink in enough to create that arch. I’m still in a pretty neutral position, and I feel supported—not compressed.”

Our Expert Opinion

I’d typically refrain from recommending pillow-top mattresses for this sleeping position since these sleepers need firmer support to prevent their hips from sinking too deeply into the bed’s layers, which can lead to lower back pain. However, the Luxury Firm Saatva Classic bucks that trend, earning a near-perfect score in edge support (4.8 out of 5). Its consistently supportive surface of this bed should help stomach sleepers maintain proper alignment while offering a comfortable sleep surface.

One thing to note is that my fellow mattress testers and I gave the Saatva a 2.7 out of 5 for motion isolation, so if you share the bed with a partner or pet who moves around a lot, you may feel those movements on your side of the mattress. Additionally, at 7.5 out of 10 on our firmness scale, this model is much too firm for strict side sleepers and those with sensitive joints.

Choose the Saatva if …
  • You want a pillow-top mattress that can support bigger bodies.
  • You are a combination sleeper seeking a super springy bed.
Keep looking if …
  • You are sensitive to motion. The Saatva’s springiness will likely cause you to feel your partner’s every twitch.
  • You have sensitive joints. The Saatva Classic might cause pressure buildup in those who already have chronic pain. Fortunately, Saatva also makes the Saatva Rx, which is made specifically for sleepers with joint pain.

The WinkBed is a luxury hybrid mattress. It has a similarly supportive and sturdy feel to a traditional innerspring mattress, but upgrades like a Euro top and cooling Tencel cover give it a touch of modern luxury. Available in three firmness levels, there is a WinkBed for just about every sleeper. And a responsive and bouncy feel makes it a great pick for combination sleepers. Learn more in our video review.

What our tester says:

“If you like the feel of a traditional innerspring mattress, the WinkBed could work for you. Since this bed offered great pressure relief around my lumbar region, I’d also recommend it to folks who suffer from lower back pain.” – Nichole Mondshein, lead reviewer and staff writer

Why It’s the Best Pillow-Top Mattress for Couples

  • The mattress surface provides strong support from corner to corner, which is perfect for couples who like to use the entire surface of the bed.
  • The Luxury Firm WinkBed is 6.5 out of 10 on our firmness scale, so it should appeal to many different sleep styles and preferences.
  • The WinkBed earned a 4.3 out of 5 in motion isolation, so you shouldn’t be able to feel your partner moving around much from your side of the bed.

Dr. Tedesco’s Notes

After evaluating the mattress from a clinical perspective, Dr. Joe Tedesco, a licensed physical therapist, gave the WinkBed mattress 4.5 stars for back pain, noting its ability to provide consistent support and promote healthy spinal alignment.

“If you’re a back or side sleeper, you’ll feel even support across your entire body,” he said. “Even if you’re a stomach sleeper, I think you’ll get enough support to help prevent significant back pain.”

Our Expert Opinion

If you share your bed with a restless partner, you’ll want a mattress that has solid motion isolation and edge support. Strong motion isolation ensures that their tossing and turning is confined to their side of the mattress and doesn’t affect you, while a stable mattress perimeter lets you roll far away from them as they move around. The Luxury Firm WinkBed effectively accomplished both goals during testing, earning a 4.3 and a 4.4 out of 5 in each category, respectively.

That said, the WinkBed comes with a couple of tradeoffs. First, our testers noted that it wasn’t the best option for side-sleeping pressure relief. Some of our team noticed discomfort in their hips and shoulders after lying in that position for several minutes. Cooling was also so-so, earning a score of 3.5 out of 5.

Choose the WinkBed if …
  • You or your partner is a restless sleeper. The WinkBed effectively isolates motion, so you won’t have to worry about disturbing your partner (or vice versa).
  • You’re a back sleeper. Our testers found that the Luxury Firm WinkBed was ideal for back sleeping, thanks to its balanced, medium-firm feel.
Keep looking if …
  • You are a strict side sleeper or a side sleeper with joint pain. During testing, some of our team found that the WinkBed caused pressure buildup in their hips and shoulders.
  • You tend to overheat at night. We found that the WinkBed’s uppermost layer absorbed more body heat than other hybrid models. For a hybrid option with better cooling, consider the Bear Elite Hybrid mattress instead.

What our tester says:

“From the cashmere cover to the Euro top, you’re getting a lot of bang for your buck with this bed. I really like how this mattress combines sturdy support with cozy pressure relief — making it a great choice for back sleepers.” – Bridget Chapman, former Sleepopolis senior product editor

Why It’s the Best Luxury Pillow-Top Mattress

  • The super soft pillow-top gives the DreamCloud Premier a luxurious, hotel-like feel.
  • Most sleepers should get deep pressure relief across the board on the DreamCloud Premier.
  • Although the pillow-top layer is soft, it is not unstable, meaning sleepers with mobility issues still have a strong perimeter to bear down on in the morning.

Edge Support: 4.5/5

There was very minimal sinkage near the perimeter of the Premier Hybrid, making it a solid option for sleepers who gravitate toward the edge.

Pressure Relief: 4.1/5

Most sleepers should experience solid pressure relief; however, side sleepers with larger bodies may experience more pressure buildup.

Firmness: 6/10

Dr. Tedesco’s Notes

During testing, Dr. Joe Tedesco, our chief medical product tester, noted that this mattress could be overly soft for sleepers with bigger bodies, but recommended it for average-weight and lighter back sleepers.

“While lying on this mattress, I definitely notice the softness of the pillow top,” said Dr. Tedesco. “This mattress doesn’t offer a whole lot of noticeable lift. However, my spine feels neutral and good while lying on my back.”

Our Expert Opinion

A great pillow-top mattress should help you sleep like you’re in a fancy hotel without paying for a vacation. The DreamCloud Premier does exactly that, making it my favorite luxury pillow-top mattress. With the Premier, DreamCloud offers a luxurious pillow-top bed at an accessible price point. During testing, we gave the DreamCloud Premier a score of 4 or higher in every category.

However, we wouldn’t recommend this mattress to strict stomach sleepers or sleepers who weigh over 230 pounds. At 5.5 out of 10 on our firmness scale, the DreamCloud Premier is on the softer side, meaning these sleepers would sink too far into its layers and not get the support they need for proper spinal alignment.

Choose the DreamCloud Premier if …
  • You prefer a softer mattress. The DreamCloud is a 5.5 out of 10 on our firmness scale, placing it in cloud-like territory.
  • You are a side sleeper seeking a soft surface that contours your hips and shoulders. Our testers gave it 4.2 stars for side-sleeping pressure relief, specifically.
Keep looking if …
  • You are a strict stomach sleeper or someone who needs a mattress tailored for heavier weights. The DreamCloud will not offer sleepers in either category enough support. For an option more suitable for stomach sleepers and those with bigger bodies, check out the WinkBed Plus instead.

The Leesa Sapira Chill is a hybrid mattress, available in three firmness levels. We tested the Medium-Firm model and felt it was just softer than average. It should be especially comfortable for back sleepers and side sleepers. The bed also has some effective cooling technology built into it, which helps to keep sleepers cool throughout the night. Learn more in our video review.

What our tester says:

“Sleepers with joint pain can appreciate the soft, plush feel, which can reduce tension and stiffness at their pressure points. I also think back sleepers and side sleepers will be comfortable on this mattress.” – Riley Otis, staff writer

Why It’s the Best Hybrid Pillow-Top Mattress

  • Our testers were impressed by the Sapira Chill’s plush layers of memory foam that provide sleepers plenty of contouring for high-pressure areas.
  • The innerspring coils make it easy to maneuver, so combination sleepers can easily flip over if they feel restless in one position.
  • The Leesa Sapira Chill is soft enough for sleepers under 130 pounds to get the support they need without it feeling too stiff and uncompromising.

While our tester found the edge support acceptable, there was more sagging in our weighted tests.

Dr. Tedesco’s Notes

Dr. Joe Tedesco, our chief medical product tester and licensed physical therapist, thought that the Leesa Sapira Chill was a home run for side sleeping, especially with a pillow.

“I am very comfortable with a pillow on my side,” he said. “My hips aren’t falling into the mattress, and my ankles and hips don’t have any extra pressure. The coils are supportive enough to straighten the spine.”

Our Expert Opinion

Hybrids are one of my favorite mattress types because they blend the best parts of all-foam beds and traditional innerspring mattresses. I appreciate how the high-quality foams of the Sapira Chill’s top layer greet me with a welcoming hug before the supportive base of coils lifts me up with sturdy security. With individual performance scores of 4.3 or higher in side and back pressure relief and cooling, this mattress earned our spot for best hybrid pillow-top mattress.

However, we didn’t find it to be very responsive, which means it probably won’t work as well for combination sleepers or sexually active couples. Our testers found it difficult to move quickly and easily on the mattress.

Choose the Leesa Sapira Chill if …
  • You have sensitive joints or chronic pain and need something more contouring than your current mattress.
  • You are a hot sleeper who needs something with effective temperature regulation to prevent you from overheating at night.
Keep looking if …
  • You weigh over 230 pounds. Sleepers with bigger bodies will not get enough support from the Sapira Chill.
  • You share a mattress with a restless partner or pet. We found that the Sapira Chill was somewhat ineffective at dampening motion. If you’re looking for a similar mattress with better motion isolation, consider the Leesa Natural instead.

The Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid mattress combines a foam comfort layer and sturdy coils. This combination of materials makes it bouncy and easy to move around on. It comes in three firmness levels, and we recommend the Medium model for most back sleepers. It’s a great choice for shoppers who are looking for a new mattress on a budget. For more information, check out our video review.

What our tester says:

“Given that the Signature Hybrid has some excellent bounce, I’d highly recommend this mattress for combination sleepers who often change positions multiple times throughout the night. I also think the Signature Hybrid could be a great fit for couples. You shouldn’t be overly disturbed by a restless partner on this bed, and it has nice, firm edge support.” – Nichole Mondshein, lead reviewer and staff writer

Why It’s the Best Pillow-Top Mattress for Side Sleepers

  • Our mattress testers loved the plush, doughy top layer of the Signature Hybrid for shoulder and hip pressure relief.
  • The pillow-top layer also absorbs motion well, making it a solid option for those who sleep with a restless partner or pet.
  • The Signature Hybrid is surprisingly easy to move around on in spite of its doughy top layer, so combo sleepers should find it easy to reposition on this mattress.

Dr. Tedesco’s Notes

Riley Otis, one of our in-house mattress experts, found that the plush surface of the Signature Hybrid was just soft enough to cradle her hips, shoulders, and other pain-prone areas during testing.

“It has a nice balance of comfort and support, with a slightly plush surface and a firmer feel underneath that keeps everything in check,” said Riley. “The pillow top helps ease pressure at the joints, but I never felt like I was sinking too deeply.”

Our Expert Opinion

More than anyone else, side sleepers need a mattress that provides enough cushioning around the shoulders and hips since that’s where they put the most pressure while lying down. The Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid provides just that, earning a 4.8 out of 5 for overall pressure relief. The quilted memory foam pillow top conforms to the body, offering a soft, cushioned feel where they need it most. With this mattress, I found myself sinking in comfortably, which helped alleviate pressure points while I slept on my side.

However, the Signature Hybrid fell short on edge support and cooling, earning a 3.4 and 3.5 out of 5, respectively. Based on these scores, we wouldn’t recommend this mattress to hot sleepers or those who need an ultra-stable perimeter.

Choose the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid if …
  • You are a side sleeper looking for a soft enough mattress to prevent pressure buildup.
  • You share a bed with a restless sleeper and need something to stifle their movements.
Keep looking if …
  • You gravitate toward the edge of the bed when you sleep. The plush top layer of the Signature Hybrid sinks in quite a bit under weight.
  • You are a hot sleeper. The Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Luxe mattress is a far better option from the brand if you’re concerned with temperature regulation.

The Nolah Evolution’s hybrid construction offers the cushioning of memory foam with the responsiveness of coils. The Luxury Firm model is a good option for side and back sleepers due to its medium-firm feel, though there are Plush and Firm versions as well. Those who share a bed may also appreciate its low motion transfer, so you won’t be disturbed by a partner’s movements and its solid edge support to allow you to maximize surface area. For more information, check out our video review.

What our tester says:

“I laid down to rest on this mattress on my back — my primary sleep position. I felt comfortable, but also appreciated the cozy, plush top of the bed. After some time lying on my back, I switched over to my side. I didn’t find this position quite as comfortable, as I did feel some slight pressure buildup in my shoulder.” – Amelia Jerden, senior staff writer

Why It’s the Best Pillow-Top Mattress for Back Sleepers

  • Our mattress testers found that the Nolah Evolution’s balanced medium-firm feel offered solid pressure relief for both back and side sleeping.
  • Couples should appreciate that the Nolah Evolution is highly effective when it comes to dampening motion.
  • Sleepers with mobility concerns will appreciate the Nolah Evolution’s sturdy edge support.

Dr. Tedesco’s Notes

Dr. Joe Tedesco, our chief medical product tester, found that the Nolah Evolution was a great fit for people with numerous pain-related conditions.

“I think this mattress would be great for sleepers with any kind of back pain or any conditions affecting the spine,” Dr. Tedesco said. “I also think that anyone with knee pain who can’t straighten their leg all the way out would really enjoy this mattress.”

Our Expert Opinion

If you’re a back sleeper who enjoys the plush feel of a luxurious pillow top, the Nolah Evolution has your, well, back. A pillow top can add comfort, but it’s essential for back sleepers to have the right amount of lift to keep their spines aligned. The Nolah Evolution strikes that balance, earning a near-perfect 4.3 for pressure relief and 4.6 for edge support. This mattress offers back sleepers a perfect combination of plush comfort and proper spinal alignment for a restful night’s sleep.

The Nolah Evolution scored well across the board (its weakest score was a 4.0 out of 5 on responsiveness). The only real weakness we found was its 120-night sleep trial. Compared to other brands, it is a bit on the shorter side for a try-out period.

Choose the Nolah Evolution if …
  • You’re a back sleeper. The Nolah Evolution’s medium-firm feel cushions the shoulders and hips enough to relieve pressure while keeping the spine in a neutral position.
  • You share your bed with a partner. Couples should appreciate that the Evolution dampens motion while remaining buoyant enough to move around on.
Keep looking if …
  • You need a budget option. While frequent sales help bring the cost down, there are plenty of quality hybrid mattresses available for less, even before discounts.
  • You need a generous sleep trial. For a similar mattress that comes with a 365-night trial, consider the Silk & Snow Hybrid instead.

Similar to the Birch Natural, the Birch Luxe Natural blends Talalay latex foam with sturdy coils that are zoned for support. We think it’s a good fit for back sleepers and stomach sleepers who enjoy a firmer bed. Its luxury upgrades include a softer cover with organic cotton and cashmere, plus the mattress has earned multiple certifications for safe production and materials. To learn more, see our video review.

What our tester says:

“I love that the Birch Luxe Natural is an eco-friendly model. I think a lot of people would find comfort in knowing there are no harmful chemicals in this bed and it’s made from organic materials. If you’re a back or stomach sleeper, I think the Birch Luxe could be a great option for you. It’s firm, yet breathable.” – Bridget Chapman, former senior product editor

Why It’s the Best Pillow-Top Latex Mattress

  • The Birch Luxe is highly responsive, making it a great option for sleepers who frequently change positions and need something easy to move around on.
  • It uses organic, meaning its construction is hypoallergenic and conscious of the environment.
  • The Birch offers excellent pressure relief across most sleeping positions.

Dr. Tedesco’s Notes

Dr. Joe Tedesco, our chief medical product tester, tested the Birch Luxe and found that it was soft enough for side sleepers to get the support and contouring they need. However, he wasn’t as impressed with it while lying on his back.

“I feel my body relaxing when I am on my side,” Dr. Tedesco said. “It’s much better on my side than my back

Our Expert Opinion

If you’re an eco-friendly sleeper looking to snag a bed that’s as green-minded as you are, you’ve got to take a look at the Birch Luxe Natural mattress. Its high-quality materials include all-natural latex foam, sturdy coils, and a Euro top made from organic cotton, cashmere, and wool. The result is a supremely cozy structure that’s also kind to the environment. Better yet, it’s kind to your body; my fellow testers and I gave it a 4 out of 5 or higher in pressure relief, edge support, and motion isolation.

However, there is one drawback to note. The Birch Luxe Natural didn’t perform as well on cooling, which could be a problem for hot sleepers. If overheating at night is a concern for you, we recommend looking at a different model.

Choose the Birch Luxe Natural if …
  • You want a hypoallergenic mattress made out of eco-friendly, organic materials.
  • You are a combination sleeper looking for a mattress that is easy to move around on.
Keep looking if …
  • You are searching for a budget option. The Birch Luxe Natural is the brand’s more luxurious option, making it pricier than other organic beds on the market.
  • You are a hot sleeper. During testing, we found that the Birch’s cooling abilities were lackluster. For an organic mattress with better cooling, consider the original Birch Natural mattress instead.

For more information about this bed, read our full Birch Luxe Natural.

Latest Updates: In August 2026, we updated our list of the best pillow-top mattresses to reflect our latest testing data. We also removed the Bear Star Hybrid, which has been discontinued, and updated our review of the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid to reflect the updated model released earlier this year.

Other Pillow-Top Mattresses I Considered

My fellow mattress testers and I put many other pillow-top mattresses through the wringer. And while we found a couple of great runners-up, they still didn’t quite make it onto our best-of list. However, these are still great beds that are worth considering, depending on what your needs are.

Avocado Green

The Avocado Green mattress almost made this list for its environmentally friendly construction, ergonomic support zones, and sturdy edge support. This bed is perfect for eco-conscious folks who want a responsive and supportive mattress, as its bouncy latex should be comfortable for back sleepers who prefer feeling like they’re more “on top” of the bed instead of “inside” of it.

Ultimately, I didn’t include the Avocado Green on my list because, even with the added mattress topper, I think a lot of folks will find that the latex is too bouncy for their liking and might not provide the deep pressure-relieving contouring that makes pillow-top mattresses so desirable.

Saatva HD Mattress

The Saatva HD gets an honorable mention because it is another great option for heavier sleepers (over 230 pounds). Heavier side sleepers, especially those with sensitive joints, should look no further than the Saatva HD. These sleepers should get plenty of contouring from the HD’s plush pillow top and ample support from the zoned latex and coil innerspring system.

However, the Saatva HD didn’t make it onto my list because it is firm for a pillow-top mattress (7 out of 10 on the firmness scale), meaning sleepers in other weight categories might find this bed too hard for their liking.

How We Picked and Tested the Best Pillow-Top Mattresses

We have tested hundreds of mattresses, so we know exactly what to look for in terms of comfort, support, and durability. We combine a hands-on approach with expert input and real-world assessments to evaluate each mattress on a variety of factors that matter most to you, from support to pressure relief, to cooling and beyond. Pressure relief refers to how much tension a mattress can relieve on a specific part of the body when lying on it. Pillow-top mattresses are generally good at relieving tension because their plush top layers contour pressure-prone areas like the hips, shoulders, and lower back.

At Sleepopolis, we rely on our pressure map test to determine whether the mattresses featured in this roundup adequately relieve pressure. We roll a specialized mat across the mattress surface and lie on it in different sleeping positions. The mat then translates the results into a graphic using thermal imaging. The pressure map shows blue for low pressure, green for moderate pressure, and yellow, orange, and red for higher pressure.

We also consider verbal feedback from our testers, as what they feel is sometimes different than what’s displayed on the heatmap.

Among the mattresses we’ve tested, the average pressure relief score is 3.8 out of 5. All of the mattresses on this list scored at least a 3.8 or higher.

Cooling

During testing, we assess a mattress’s temperature-regulating abilities using a thermal gun. A thermal gun is a device that tells us how much a mattress heats up after we lie down on it. Once a tester has lain on the bed for 5 minutes, a color-coded graphic demonstrates the temperature increase via thermal imaging.

If there’s a temperature increase of less than 5 degrees, we consider the mattress to have excellent cooling capabilities; 5 to 10 degrees indicates good cooling, 10 to 15 degrees indicates decent cooling, and more than 15 degrees indicates poor cooling.

The average cooling score among all the mattresses we’ve tested is 3.9 out of 5. Most of the mattresses on this list scored above a 3.9, and the ones that did not excelled in other key categories like pressure relief and edge support.

Edge Support

No matter where you lie on the mattress, you should be able to receive the proper level of support to keep your spine aligned. We look for beds with solid structures that feel stable from corner to corner.

Mattresses with sturdy materials and support layers, like steel coils or high-density foam, generally score better in this category. We test the edge support by having team members of different body types and weights lie on the perimeter and assess their alignment in multiple sleeping positions.

The average edge support score among all the mattresses we’ve tested is 4 out of 5. All but two mattresses scored higher than the average. However, our testers found that the weaker edge support was attributed to the plushness of their pillow tops and not a design flaw that would suggest lesser durability.

Other Tests

While cooling, edge support, and pressure relief were the main factors that we looked at while choosing the best pillow-top mattresses, we also performed many other tests to look at responsiveness, motion isolation, and firmness.

When evaluating motion isolation, for example, two of our testers lie next to each other on the mattress. One tester wears a blindfold and remains still. The second tester tosses, turns, and gets in and out of bed. Each time the stationary tester notices motion on their side of the mattress, they raise their hand. This tells us how well the mattress absorbs motion.

What Is the Difference Between a Regular Mattress and a Pillow-Top Mattress?

A regular mattress (one without a pillow-top cover) has a relatively flat, uniform sleep surface. Pillow-top mattresses, on the other hand, include an extra layer of plush cushioning sewn onto the top. This added layer, often made from foam, gives pillow-top mattresses a softer, more cushioned feel and can provide extra pressure relief.

How Long Do Pillow-Top Mattresses Last?

Pillow-top mattresses last roughly 7–10 years depending on the mattress construction. Stronger support systems and quality materials should lead to better durability and a longer mattress lifespan. For example, latex is generally more durable than traditional polyurethane or memory foam.

Tip: You can also rotate the bed 180 degrees every 3 to 6 months to prevent sagging.

What Are the Advantages of Having a Pillow-Top Mattress?

The extra layers of foam up top help to establish some immediate comfort and sinkage, which can be great for folks in need of deep pressure relief. For back sleepers, this means getting more cushioning to fill the lumbar region and ease the hips to alleviate back pain. Meanwhile, side sleepers will get more contouring around their hips and shoulders, which are typically more vulnerable to pressure buildup.

Pillow-top mattresses are also often great at dampening motion, which is a trait most couples should benefit from. If you share your bed with someone who constantly tosses and turns, the doughy surface of a pillow-top mattress should absorb some of that movement and prevent it from coming to you.
