DreamCloud vs. Purple: Which is Better for You?
These two beds are very different, so before we get into the details, let’s talk about which sleeping positions each of these mattresses is best for. I also encourage you to check out my full DreamCloud mattress review and Purple mattress review for even more information.
DreamCloud

In general, I’d say that the DreamCloud is a hybrid mattress and has more of a traditional build than the Purple, so it might be a slightly better fit for those after a more traditional feeling bed. The bouncy innerspring coils in the DreamCloud could make it a real winner for combination sleepers who need to move around and change positions at night. Back sleepers might also like the DreamCloud’s blend of support and pressure relief.
On the other hand, stomach sleepers will likely find this mattress a bit too soft, and side sleepers might find it creates tension around their pressure points.
Purple

The Purple could be a solid choice for sleepers who want to try something a little different. Most people likely haven’t slept on anything like the brand’s Purple Grid™, which could make the mattress a fun choice for those in search of something new.
From a construction perspective, I’d say that the Purple is going to be best for those in need of pressure relief at the shoulders and hips. The Purple is built to actively alleviate tension across the body, marking it as a good option for side and back sleepers. Though strict side sleepers might prefer an even more plush feel. Similarly, a lot of stomach sleepers might like the Purple, but a few might prefer a more firm mattress. Combination sleepers should also appreciate the Purple mattress, it’s bouncy and responsive, which is a plus for these folks.
If you are a strict side sleeper looking for a new bed with a super pressure-relieving feel, I’d recommend checking out some of our best mattresses for side sleepers.
Next, let’s dig into how these mattresses feel!
What Do These Mattresses Feel Like?
To find out how these beds feel, we’re going to examine each mattress for a variety of factors, including firmness level, pressure relief, sinkage, motion transfer, and bounce.
Before we dive into this discussion, I just want to take a moment to acknowledge the subjectivity of this section. How I judge a bed’s feel could very well differ from how you’d judge it, so take my notes for what they are. For reference, I’m 5’10”, weigh around 190 lbs, and prefer to sleep on my stomach.
DreamCloud
I decided to give the DreamCloud mattress a 7 out of 10 on the firmness scale. When compared to the industry standard of 6.5 for medium firmness, it’s clear this bed is on the firmer side of things.

The mattress got a 7 from me because I think it does an excellent job of striking a balance between pressure relief and support. Not only do you get some nice sinkage from the quilted cover and top layer of memory foam, but you get plenty of bounce and lift from the pocketed coil system. This combination could work well for a wide range of sleepers, especially those who want to feel positioned squarely on top of their bed like back or combination sleepers. Strict side sleepers, however, may find that the DreamCloud is just a little too firm for their needs.
I think couples might like this mattress because it offers great edge support, so they’ll be able to spread out on the entire surface area of the mattress. But, the DreamCloud didn’t do particularly well on my motion isolation tests, so you might feel disturbed by a partner on this bed.
Purple
Interestingly enough, the Purple also snagged a 7 out of 10 on the firmness scale from me. Again, when we compare this score to the industry standard of 6.5 for medium firmness, it seems like this bed is also firmer.
However, just because I gave both the Purple and DreamCloud mattresses a 7 out of 10 firmness ranking does not mean they feel the same. In my opinion, the Purple’s feel is really dominated by a single material — the hyper-elastic polymer in its Purple Grid™. This layer establishes a supportive, bouncy, and firm feel that also happens to be great at relieving pressure. Therefore, I think it could be a nice fit for side and back combination sleepers, particularly those who struggle with arthritis and nighttime pain.

I also think that back and stomach sleepers will find the Purple firm enough to lift their hips in alignment with their shoulders. An added bonus for the Purple is that it’s a cooling mattress, making it a solid option for hot sleepers.

What Are These Mattresses Made Of?
Now, let’s dive underneath the covers and see what’s going on inside these mattresses.
DreamCloud
Cover — The DreamCloud cover is a cashmere blend with an irresistibly soft-to-the-touch feel.
Comfort Layer — Beneath the cover, you’ll land on a layer of gel memory foam. This material has a slow response to pressure, which allows folks to sink in for pressure relief at the shoulders, hips, and lower back. And although memory foam has a reputation for trapping body heat, a cooling gel infusion in this layer helps to diffuse that issue.
Transition Layer — To curb some of the top layer’s sinkage, DreamCloud has snuck in a layer of poly foam. This material has a quicker response to pressure than the memory foam above it, which helps to gradually ease the sleeper into the firm support layer below.
Support Layer — Up next you’ll spy a tall section of pocketed coils. This springy system makes up the bulk of the bed’s design, which means it brings a ton of firmness and lift to the party. Combo sleepers and back sleepers could find a lot to enjoy in this pocketed coil system.
Base Layer — Below the pocketed coils is a thin layer of poly foam. This dense foam gives the springs something to bounce off of.

Purple
Cover — The Purple cover is made from a knit fabric that’s soft and stretchy.
Comfort Layer — Things really kick into gear with a comfort layer of the brand’s signature Purple Grid™. As the name suggests, a hyper-elastic polymer is laid out in a grid pattern across the entire surface of the mattress. It has a quick response to pressure and walls that collapse under the sleeper’s weight. This creates a slight contouring effect that should provide some nice pressure relief to the shoulders and hips. The spaces between the grid walls also promote a ton of breathability, which helps cool down the bed.
Transition Layer — Beneath the grid is a transitional layer of poly foam. Much like the material seen in the DreamCloud, this layer functions mostly to ease the sleeper into the firmer base below.
Base Layer — The purple is an all-foam mattress, so it’s base is made of a layer of high-density poly foam.

More From DreamCloud and Purple
As I mentioned earlier, both DreamCloud and Purple sell a variety of different mattresses. To see how some of these models stack up against the beds covered in this comparison, let’s walk through a brief breakdown of each mattress.
DreamCloud Premier
- The DreamCloud Premier is fairly similar to the original DreamCloud mattress, but has a slightly more luxurious feel to it thanks to its thick euro top layer. Side sleepers might prefer this mattress.
- Like the DreamCloud mattress, I’d say the Premier is a medium firm hybrid mattress, so it strikes a nice balance between pressure relief and support.
- This mattress is also super bouncy, so it could be a good choice for combo sleepers or other folks who want to move between positions in the night.
- For more, read my full DreamCloud Premier mattress review.
Purple Hybrids
- The Purple Hybrids sleep even cooler than the original all-foam purple mattress, so hot sleepers looking for a mattress with great temperature regulation abilities might really like these beds.
- Purple offers the hybrid in several different firmness options so most sleepers who like the feel of the purple grid should find one that meets their sleep needs.
- The Purple 3 and Purple 4, Purple’s Hybrid Premier models are softer than the other Purple mattresses. Side sleepers might really appreciate the extra pressure relief on these beds.

DreamCloud vs. Purple: Best Qualities
Well folks, we’ve arrived at the end of this comparison! After going over every inch of these mattresses with a fine-tooth comb, it’s time to draw some final conclusions and make a few recommendations.
First and foremost, I think those after more of a traditional mattress feel may want to stick with the DreamCloud mattress. This bed features a familiar build of soft foam layers over springy coils, establishing a pleasant, medium-firm feel. In my opinion, the DreamCloud does an excellent job of balancing pressure relief with support, which could be a big plus for combo and back sleepers. Additionally, I think the added lift from the pocketed coil system could make it a nice fit for heavy people. These folks tend to sink straight through other bed-in-a-box mattresses, so they may enjoy the extra heft of the DreamCloud.

In terms of the Purple mattress, I think it could be a good option for folks in need of pressure relief at the shoulders and hips. Though you’re not going to get the deep sinkage here that you’d get from, say, memory foam mattresses, the Purple Grid™ does a fine job of alleviating tension at sensitive spots along the body. Like the DreamCloud, it’s also quite bouncy, making it a solid pick for combo sleepers or other folks who need to change positions in the night. But perhaps my favorite feature of the Purple mattress is how cool it is. The Purple Grid™ is highly breathable, so works to both increase airflow throughout the structure and dissipate body heat. This could be a nice bonus for folks who tend to sleep hot.

Let’s summarize a few of these key takeaways below!
DreamCloud Best Features
- As I mentioned up top, the DreamCloud mattress has a traditional design that could work well for folks in need of something a little more old-school. Here, familiar materials come together to produce a cozy, medium firm feel.
- The DreamCloud mattress could also be a nice fit for heavier folks in need of extra support at the hips and lower back. The bed’s tall pocketed coil system does an excellent job of lifting these heavier parts up and out of the structure.
Purple Best Features
- The big selling point for the Purple mattress is its pressure relief. No matter the position you roll into, the Purple Grid™ is designed to contour to the curves of your body. This could mark it as a nice option for folks in need of relief at the shoulders, hips, and lower back.
- I’d also say that the Purple mattress is quite cool! The thin cover and breathable Purple Grid™ make it a solid pick for folks who tend to overheat at night.
