We’ll be comparing the Saatva HD and the WinkBed Plus. These two mattresses were both designed for heavy sleepers, but they can both work for a variety of other sleepers. We’ll be discussing similarities, differences, and who may like each model.

For heavier sleepers, it can be difficult to find a mattress that is both comfortable and supportive. If you weigh over 250 pounds, you may feel like many mattresses aren’t built with enough support to keep your body aligned. Luckily, two popular online mattress companies — Saatva and WinkBeds — have created mattresses with heavy sleepers specifically in mind. The Saatva HD and the WinkBed Plus are similar, but they have some significant differences that could impact your sleep quality.

Since these two mattresses are so similar, we’re here to break down those key differences that could potentially impact your sleep and help you choose the best option for you. We’ll go over the feel, the materials, who we recommend each for, the pricing, and the company policies.

The Saatva HD and the WinkBed Plus are both innerspring mattresses with a firmer feel.

Just like no two sleepers are the same, no two mattresses are the same. Although two mattresses may seem similar on the surface, they could perform very differently or have drastically different company policies. In addition, a mattress can feel different depending on your body type and sleep position. Let’s take a look at who each of these beds could be good for.

Who Should Buy The Saatva HD

• People with allergies: The latex used in this mattress goes through a washing process that removes allergy-causing proteins, making the mattress hypoallergenic and resistant to mold, mildew, and dust mites. The cover is also made from organic cotton, which shouldn’t irritate those with allergies.
• People with back pain: This mattress uses Saatva’s patented Lumbar Zone® Active Spinal Wire for enhanced support in the lumbar region. The 5-zone natural latex layer also aids in pressure relief, which people in pain can appreciate.
• People seeking easy setup: Saatva offers free white glove delivery and setup, so a team will set up your new mattress in the room of your choice and remove your old mattress at no additional cost.

Who Should Buy The WinkBed Plus

• Couples: The mattress has good motion isolation, so you’re unlikely to be disturbed by your partner’s movement. The edge support on this bed is also excellent, meaning you and your partner can really spread out and use the whole bed.
• Hot sleepers: The 2.5-inch latex comfort layer has an open-cell design that promotes airflow through the mattress. The Tencel cover is also very breathable, which can help you sleep cool.
• Sustainable shoppers: The Tencel cover is made from natural fibers derived from eucalyptus trees, and the production of the fabric uses 10 to 20 times less water than required for traditional viscoses. The cover is also OEKO-TEX Standard 100 Class 1 certified, the foam is CertiPUR certified, and the coils are made from recycled steel.

Saatva HD vs WinkBed Plus: Similarities and Differences

These two mattresses are very similar in both their materials and feels. Similar sleepers should like both mattresses. However, the mattresses are not identical. Let’s go over some key similarities and differences.

Main Similarities 

• The Saatva HD and the WinkBed Plus are both constructed with zoned support, latex foam, and steel coils.
• Both mattresses have excellent edge support.
• Both mattresses are made with breathable materials and could be good for hot sleepers.

Main Differences 

• The Saatva HD is more expensive than the WinkBed Plus at full retail, with the former currently priced at $3,295 and the latter priced at $1,999 for a queen size.
• The Saatva HD has a 365-night sleep trial and the WinkBed Plus has a 120-night sleep trial.
• In our testing, we found the WinkBed Plus to have better motion isolation than the Saatva HD.

Saatva HD and WinkBed Plus Mattress Feel Comparison

When you try a new mattress, the way it feels will usually be the first thing you notice. In this section, we’ll cover the differences in firmness, pressure relief, and bounce between the Saatva HD and the WinkBed Plus.

Here at Sleepopolis, we rate firmness on a scale from 1 to 10 with 1 being the softest and 10 being the firmest. We use 6.5 as our standard rating for medium-firm. Our mattress experts assessed the firmness and feel of these mattresses by lying on them in different positions in our testing studio and moving around on them.

Saatva HD

The Saatva HD is a cushiony hybrid innerspring mattress that allows you to feel more “on top” of the bed than “in” the bed, which is great for heavy sleepers who won’t want to sink too far. Our experts rated this bed a 7 on the firmness scale, which is slightly firmer than the industry standard of 6.5 for medium firmness.

This mattress is great at providing pressure relief in multiple positions. The cushiony support cradles the pressure points in the hips, shoulders, and back, which makes it a good choice for pretty much any sleeping position. We’ll cover the best (and worst) sleeping positions in more detail in the next section.

The Saatva HD may not be the best option for some couples. We tested this mattress to see how well it does at isolating motion, and we found high motion transfer results. This means you’re likely to feel movements your partner (or pet) makes throughout the night, which could disrupt your sleep.

The latex and coils used in this mattress make it very bouncy, which is good news for combination sleepers who typically need a bit of bounce to facilitate movement from one position to another. This bounciness, also known as responsiveness, also makes it a good mattress for sex.

The edge support on this mattress is terrific. The sides are just as supportive as the center of the mattress, which means you can really spread out and take advantage of the whole mattress. This is an advantage for couples, as well as heavy sleepers.

Finally, the Saatva HD is a great choice for hot sleepers who need a mattress that will keep them cool throughout the night. The organic cotton cover is breathable and the Talalay latex layer below is naturally cooling and promotes airflow. The coil layer also allow for lots of airflow in the bed. There is a layer of memory foam in this mattress, which is known for trapping heat, but the plethora of cooling materials help counteract this.

WinkBed Plus

The WinkBed Plus is a supportive hybrid mattress that has an “on top of” the bed feel. Our experts rated this bed a 7.5 on the firmness rating, which makes it a firm mattress compared to the industry standard of 6.5 for medium firmness. This mattress may feel like an 8 out of 10 to light to average weight sleepers, who won’t sink in as much.

This mattress does a decent job of relieving pressure, but it really depends on the sleeping position. Not only does the sleeping position determine the amount of pressure relief offered, but it’s also largely dependent on your body type. We’ll discuss sleeping positions and weight in depth in the next section..

The WinkBed Plus can be a great option for couples due to its low motion transfer. This mattress does a good job of isolating motion, so you won’t be disturbed by any movement coming from your partner’s side of the bed.

Combination sleepers can enjoy the bounce the latex and coils provide, which can help them easily switch between sleeping positions. Similarly, the firm feel and bounce make it a good mattress for sex.

This mattress has excellent edge support, which is unsurprising because it has an Extra-Edge Support System. If you love spreading out on the bed, you’ll appreciate being supported on every inch of it.

The breathable Tencel cover and breathable latex with an open-cell design make this a great mattress for hot sleepers. The steel coils also add additional airflow, which is great for sleepers needing some extra cooling.

Comparing What it’s Like to Sleep on the Saatva HD and the WinkBed Plus

Your body weight and sleeping position are the most important variables that determine your compatibility with a mattress. Depending on these factors, a mattress can feel very different to different people.

Saatva HD

Back — Lightweight (under 130 pounds) back sleepers may find this mattress a bit too firm if they don’t typically enjoy a very firm mattress. Average weight (130 to 250 pounds) back sleepers should feel on top of the mattress and properly supported. Heavy sleepers (over 250 pounds) will likely feel very supported and stable on this mattress and won’t find themselves sinking in too far.

Side — Light (under 130 pounds) and average weight (130 to 250 pounds) side sleepers would probably benefit from a softer mattress, as this one may be too firm and cause shoulder or hip pain. However, heavier people (over 250 pounds) should have just the right amount of sinkage to avoid pain while still feeling supported.

Stomach — This mattress should be a good option for stomach sleepers of all weights. Its firm feel can properly support the hips and keep them in line with the shoulders, which is crucial for proper spinal alignment.

Body Weight — The Saatva HD mattress will feel firmer to light and average sleepers than it does to heavy sleepers. This mattress can still be a good choice for light and average weight sleepers if they enjoy an extra-firm feel, but some may want a softer mattress.

WinkBed Plus

Back — All body weights should enjoy this mattress when sleeping on their back —  however, it will feel extra firm to light and average weight sleepers, who may not enjoy that. 

Side — This mattress is likely too firm for side sleepers, regardless of body type. Side sleepers are unlikely to find enough pressure relief and contouring in the shoulders and hips and may do better on a softer mattress.

Stomach — Most stomach sleepers should enjoy the ultra-firm feel of this mattress, which is ideal for ensuring proper spinal alignment in this position. Although, heavy sleepers who carry their weight in their stomach may need a mattress with a bit more sinkage.

Body Weight — The WinkBed Plus is a very firm mattress, and it will feel even more firm to light and average weight sleepers. These sleepers who dislike firm mattresses may want to go in a different direction, such as one from our best mattress for lightweight sleepers roundup.

A mattress’s feel and performance is mostly determined by its constructions. Both of these mattresses use a combination of latex foams and steel coils. Let’s break down each layer within these mattresses.

Saatva HD

In our opinion, both the Saatva HD and the WinkBed Plus are excellent mattresses, especially for heavy sleepers, thanks to their sturdy construction. These mattresses are very similar in their feel and construction, but both have unique benefits that different sleepers can enjoy.

We will also note how easy Saatva’s chat feature is. It’s very user-friendly and easy to navigate, and you can chat with a Saatva representative if you have a specific question that can’t be answered by their automated program. WinkBeds Sleepopolis Customer Service Rating 

Great: Based on our experience with WinkBeds, we rate them as great. WinkBeds support is available Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. EST via chat, phone, and email. Although WinkBeds support is not available 24/7, they do have some automated responses available for some common questions. If you have any other questions, you’ll have to wait until WinkBeds’ business hours to be connected.

WinkBeds has a detailed FAQs page that answers an abundance of questions, which we think is a great feature. This brand has grear customer service because it checks all the boxes we’re looking for — however, it doesn’t go above and beyond like the Saatva team does.
