Purple vs Casper: Which is Better for You?
Let’s kick things off with a few quick recommendations. Though we’ll be diving into the specifics later on, I thought you might enjoy some expert tips before we get started. This is also where I’ll drop my full Purple mattress review and Casper mattress review for your perusal.
Who Should Buy Purple
- Combination sleepers will likely enjoy the bouncy, lively nature of the original Purple mattress.
- If you sleep hot, I’d definitely recommend checking out the original Purple mattress. Not only is its hyper-elastic, grid-like comfort layer billed as being “temperature neutral,” but the mattress as a whole is very breathable.
- Sleepers interested in something a little different might enjoy this bed’s unconventional design.
Who Should Buy Casper
- If you struggle with back pain, you’ll likely enjoy this bed’s Zoned Support, which helps establish a neutral spinal alignment.
- The mattress has a medium-firm, balanced foam feel, which could work wonders for those after both pressure relief and support.
- Stomach and back sleepers might benefit most from this bed’s ample support and lift.

Purple vs Casper: Similarities and Differences
Before we move-on, let’s highlight some of the main similarities and differences between these two mattresses. That way, we can better contextualize our findings throughout this comparison.
Main Similarities
- Both Purple and Casper sell a ton of different mattresses, though we’re only focusing on their original all-foam models in this comparison. Later on, we’ll briefly go over some of their other respective offerings.
- The Original Purple and Casper mattresses both sleep fairly cool, so if you overheat at night, you should feel extra comfortable on these beds.
I’d also say these mattresses are competitively priced. If pricing is a major deal breaker for you, know that there’s not a huge cost difference between the two.
Main Differences
- The Purple has a slightly unconventional feel to it, so if you want more of a traditional vibe, I’d recommend going with the Casper.
- Though they have similar medium-firm feels, the Casper offers slightly deeper pressure relief, marking it as a better option for folks with aches and pains.
- If you’re looking for some extreme lift, the Purple could be the one for you as it’s much bouncier than the Casper mattress.
Purple and Casper Mattress Feel Comparison
Now that we’ve gone over all of the main similarities and differences, let’s dig into how these mattresses feel. To do this, we’re going to compare them for a number of different variables, such as firmness and pressure relief.
Important to note, though, that the feel of a mattress is always going to be subjective and could change a lot depending on one’s body size, shape, and weight. So how I feel these mattresses could very well differ from how you would feel them.
Purple
After rolling around the Purple mattress, I decided to give it a 7 out of 10 firmness rating on the mattress firmness scale. When compared to the industry standard of 6.5 for medium firmness, it seems this bed is on the firmer side.
Perhaps the thing you’re most curious about is how the hyper-elastic Purple Grid™ feels. As you move around the mattress, you’ll likely notice that the grid walls collapse and rise to contour to the curves of your body. This creates a seamless sleeping experience in which you’re always pretty comfortable. That being said, the Purple mattress is a touch firmer than medium-firm, so will probably work best for back and combination sleepers. Strict side sleepers may find that the mattress isn’t able to provide the deep pressure relief they need at the shoulders, hips, and lower back.
One of my favorite attributes of the Purple mattress is how cool it sleeps. The spaces between the grid walls allow for a ton of airflow throughout the structure, which helps to lower temps as you snooze. If you’re someone who struggles with overheating at night, you could benefit a lot from the ultra-cooling Purple mattress. I’d also say it could be an especially good fit for anyone who wants to feel positioned squarely “on top” of their bed.
Casper
The Casper also got a 7 out of 10 firmness rating on the firmness scale from me. Again, when compared to the industry standard of 6.5 for medium firmness, this marks it as pretty firm.
Though both the Casper and Purple mattresses received 7 out of 10’s from me, that doesn’t mean they feel the same. The Casper has more of a balanced foam feel, which provides both pressure relief and support. The combination of latex, memory foam, and high-density poly foam work together to bring targeted relief to pressure points across the body, resulting in a gentle yet supportive sleeping experience that could work for a wide range of sleepers. I particularly like it for back sleepers, especially those who struggle with back pain at the hips and lower back.
Like the Purple, I’d also say that the Casper sleeps pretty cool. Though it’s perhaps not as temperature neutral as its Purple counterpart, the Casper benefits from a breathable top layer of Airscape™ foam, which features small perforations on its surface to promote airflow throughout the mattress. Hot sleepers should be pleased by the soothing, cooling nature of the Casper mattress.

Comparing What It’s Like to Sleep on Purple and Casper
In this section, I’m going to discuss how it feels to snooze in different sleeping positions on the Purple and Casper. I’ll do this by assessing pressure relief and support on the back, side, and stomach. Plus, I’ll include some thoughts on how these mattresses might affect those of different body sizes, shapes, and weights.
Purple
Back — The Purple mattress is a great option for back sleepers. As I sank into the hyper-elastic grid, I could feel the material filling in the space at my lower back for some nice pressure relief. But I also felt lifted on top of the mattress, which helped to set my spine in a nice even line from shoulder-to-hip.
Side — As I turned onto my side, I continued to feel some awesome comfort from this mattress. However, I’m not sure I would recommend this bed for all-night side sleeping; in my opinion, it’s just a little too firm for that. However, if you’re a combination sleeper, you should be totally fine.
Stomach — Of all the positions, stomach sleeping was probably the least comfortable. When I stretched out in this position, I could feel my hips sinking out of alignment with my shoulders, which is a big no-no for stomach sleepers.
Body Weight — The Purple Grid™ is highly adaptable and supportive, so should work well for a wide range of different body sizes, shapes, and weights. Heavier sleepers may sink into the structure deeper than lighter ones, so I’d recommend heavier people opt for one of the Purple Hybrids instead.
Casper
Back — The Casper is also a great option for back sleepers. As I sank into the top layers of foam, I could feel them filling in the space at my lumbar region for pressure relief at my lower back. But I could also feel the interior layer of zoned support lifting my hips up in alignment with my shoulders, which created some nice stability along my spine.
Side — I certainly didn’t mind the Casper on my side, but I’m not sure I’d recommend it for strict side sleepers. Though the bed has a gentle, balanced feel, it’s still probably too firm for folks who solely doze on their sides. However, like on the Purple, you should be okay if you switch between your side and another position at night.
Stomach — And finally, I found sleeping on my stomach to be pretty comfortable on the Casper, especially when compared to the Purple. For an all-foam model, this bed does an excellent job of lifting the hips up to sit in line with the shoulders, which is a major plus for stomach sleepers.
Body Weight — The Casper has a balanced foam feel that should leave both lighter sleepers feeling well supported through the night. But, heavy people might not get what they need from the Casper original mattress (or from the Purple). I’d recommend they opt for one of our best mattresses for heavy people instead.

Comparing Purple and Casper Mattress Materials
Now that we’ve discussed how these mattresses feel, let’s find out how they’re built. Below, I’m going to go over the Purple and Casper’s mattress construction, but would also encourage you to check out my full Purple mattress review and Casper mattress review for even more information.
Purple
Cover — The Purple’s SoftFlex cover is made from a super soft knit material that’s cozy to the touch.
Comfort Layer — Things kick off with 2 inches of the brand’s hyper-elastic polymer Purple Grid™. This material has a quick response to pressure, allowing folks to bounce around and change positions with ease. The spaces between the grid walls also promote a ton of airflow, which works to encourage breathability and cooling throughout the mattress. As the grid walls collapse under pressure, they also provide some really nice pressure relief to sensitive spots like the shoulders and hips.
Transition Layer — Beneath the Purple Grid™, you’ll arrive at a transition layer of poly foam. This material functions mostly to ease the sleeper down from the softer top layer onto the firmer base below.
Base Layer — The base of the Purple mattress is made of a thick slab of high-density poly foam. This material is incredibly firm, working to bring some stability, support, and shape to the structure. It also increases the overall durability of the bed.
Casper
Cover — The Original Casper cover is made of a knit polyester blend, which is soft and cozy.
Comfort Layer — The comfort layer is made of the brand’s Airscape™ foam. This material has a latex-like feel, but provides plenty of space for sleepers to sink in for pressure relief at the shoulders, hips, and lower back. Though body-contouring like this would usually trap body heat (like a traditional memory foam mattress), Casper fixes this issue with small perforations along the layer’s surface. This promotes breathability and excellent airflow.
Transition Layer — The Casper’s second layer includes the Zoned Support that I’ve been referencing throughout this comparison. As we discussed earlier, the term “zoned” just means the section has been divided into three different firmness “zones,” with softer foam at the shoulders for pressure relief and firmer foam at the hips for a little lift. All of this helps to bring extra comfort to sensitive pressure points across the body and sets the spine in a neutral alignment to alleviate tension at the lower back and hips.
Base Layer — In the all-foam Casper, the base is made of high-density poly foam. This firm material brings some support, shape, and stability to the bed.
Purple vs Casper: Best Qualities
Well folks, we’ve officially arrived at the end of this mattress comparison. Now that we’ve assessed how these beds feel and how they’re built, it’s time to wrap things up with a few expert recommendations. Below, I’m going to outline my favorite qualities of these mattresses so you can better understand which one is going to be the best mattress for you.
The star of the Purple mattress is its breathable, hyper-elastic polymer Purple Grid™. This gel material not only contours to the curves of your body for relief at pressure points like the hips, shoulders, and lower back, but it’s also temperature neutral, marking it as a solid option for folks who overheat at night. I’d also add that it’s pretty bouncy, making it easy to move around and change positions while you snooze. All in all, a great option for combination sleepers or those who could benefit from a little extra breathability and airflow in the night.
However, if you like a more traditional all-foam feel, you can’t go wrong with the Original Casper foam mattress. This bed employs a balanced foam design of high-quality latex, memory foam, and high density poly foam. Together, these materials produce a pressure-relieving yet supportive vibe that could work wonders for a wide range of sleepers. But this bed is probably going to work best for those who struggle with back pain, thanks to the interior layer of zoned support, which brings targeted relief to the hips and lower back.

Casper Best Features
- I love the balanced foam mattress feel of the Casper. The combination of latex, memory foam, and high-density poly foam strikes a pleasant balance between pressure relief and support.
- The internal layer of Zoned Support is also a major winner in my book. Why? Well, it helps to establish a neutral spine alignment, which is great for pressure relief at the lower back.
- Like the Purple mattress, the Casper sleeps cool, thanks to the airflow of the Airscape™ foam in its comfort layer.

Comparing Purple and Casper Customer Service
At Sleepopolis, we rank a brand’s customer service based on our personal interactions with its customer service team. A brand can either be ranked as Stellar, Great, Satisfactory, or Poor.
Purple Sleepopolis Customer Service Rating
Satisfactory: Purple has a totally fine customer service portal right on its home page. You don’t get to directly chat with an agent, but you do get to fill in your information and peruse a few set FAQs. But it’s super easy to follow up with a real person if you can’t find what you’re looking for.
Casper Sleepopolis Customer Service Rating
Great: Though Casper’s customer service is good, I didn’t think it was quite as effective as what I’ve seen from other brands. It took a moment for an agent to get back to me, but when they did, they were super helpful and nice.
Comparing Other Models from Purple and Casper
Though we’ve been focusing on the all-foam Purple and Casper mattresses in this comparison, it’s worth noting that both brands also sell some of the best hybrid mattresses, which combine foam and innerspring coil layers for a one-two punch of pressure relief and support. Let’s meet these hybrids below.
Purple Hybrids
The Purple hybrid mattresses combine the brand’s hyper-elastic Purple Grid™with layers of springy pocketed coils. Currently, Purple offers three different hybrid models.
- Purple Hybrid: The Purple Hybrid is, in my opinion, the firmest Purple mattress. It features just 2 inches of the brand’s Purple Grid™ over pocketed coils. This produces a firm and bouncy vibe that could work well for back and stomach sleepers.
The Purple Hybrid is a cooling, responsive bed that is a great option for back sleepers. It's made with Purple's proprietary grid layer, which has a unique feel that combines comfort and responsiveness.

- Purple Hybrid Premier: There are two Premier models, one built with a 3-inch Purple Grid™ and one built with a 4-inch grid. This makes the Hybrid Premier mattresses much softer than either the original Purple or the Purple Hybrid. I typically recommend the Premier models for side and combination sleepers.
The Purple Hybrid Premier is a softer version of the Purple Hybrid. It comes in two versions: the Hybrid Premier 3 and the Hybrid Premier 4. These numbers refer to the thickness of the mattress's comfort layer. Back sleepers should be happy on the Premier 3, while the Premier 4 is a nice choice for side sleepers looking for added pressure relief.

Casper Hybrids
The Casper Hybrid mattresses combine soft foam top layers with pocketed coils for a pleasant mix of lift and give. Below, I’ll run through three of Casper’s different hybrid models.
- Casper Hybrid: The Casper Hybrid is just like the Original Casper, except its base layer is made of pocketed coils instead of high-density poly foam. This makes it bouncier and more supportive than its all-foam sibling. Therefore, I’d recommend it for back and combo sleepers.
If you’re looking for a bouncy and supportive structure, the Casper Hybrid is most definitely the bed for you. It has a buoyant feel, but still offers some nice pressure relief, making it an ideal choice for back sleepers and combination sleepers.

- Casper Nova Hybrid: In my opinion, the Casper Nova Hybrid is the gentlest Casper bed. If you could use a little extra relief at pressure points like the shoulders, hips, and lower back, this could be a fantastic new mattress for you. It also sleeps cooler than the other Casper models, which could be good news for hot sleepers.

Our Review Process
Our Sleepopolis reviewers personally test each mattress. We start by unboxing the mattress to figure out how difficult (or easy) it is to get the mattress from the box to the bed. Then, we spend time laying on the bed in different positions, taking time to assess it on our backs, stomachs, and sides. Next, we perform our Sleepopolis tests, using specialized tools to measure qualities like motion transfer, bounce, and pressure relief. Our last step is to open up the mattress and take a look at each layer. These steps allow us to give our final verdict on the mattress. Jump back to our mattress picks.
