The only thing better than one mattress is two mattresses in one. Flippable mattresses used to be more common, but their popularity seems to have declined as mattress companies design beds with softer materials up top for pressure relief and firmer materials below for support. However, flippable mattresses are not a relic, and there are many great options on the market.
Most flippable mattresses often offer two different firmness options depending on which side faces up, perfect for unsure or non-committal sleepers. Others feature the same firmness on each to maximize longevity: Simply flip it over before an impression of your body can form.
These mattresses have a number of advantages and are great for almost any sleeping situation. However, what determines the best flippable mattress? Leave that to our sleep experts. They’ve tested every mattress on this list from the top, and then they flipped it and reversed it.
Sleepopolis’ Best In Rest – Flippable Mattress
The Plank Firm is the best flippable mattress because of its uniquely extra-firm and supportive feel. This all-foam mattress features a firm and ultra-firm side, so it won’t let you down like other so-called mattresses. It’s also fairly reasonably priced and durably constructed, so it should last many twists, turns, and flips. The Best Flippable Mattresses

How We Picked the Best Flippable Mattresses
Most of the mattresses featured in this article have dual-sided firmness, which means two different firmness levels on either side. To make the flipping worthwhile, these firmnesses should have distinctly different — but still comfortable — feels. One mattress on this list features the same firmness on both sides, which may appeal to folks who want a flippable mattress for added durability.
We rate firmness on a scale of 1 to 10, with 1 being the softest and 10 the firmest. Most beds fall at or around 6.5 out of 10, or medium-firm. Flippable mattresses tend to offer both firm and soft sides. We ideally want to see at least one point difference between each side to constitute a noticeable contrast.

It’s important that a flippable mattress has strong airflow, which helps both sides of it stay cool and clear of dust. That’s why we measured each of these beds’ temperature with a thermal gun, and by resting on the mattress’s surface for five minutes to see how cool it felt.
For this list, we aimed to include beds that either scored high in this test or felt breathable throughout testing.

If you’re using both sides of a mattress, you’ll want to make sure that the construction is strong enough to keep the sleeper lifted. Each of these mattresses should have a strong support system, whether made of foam or coils, that should promote spinal alignment for most sleepers.
Strong edge support, while not necessary, is also a plus. It ensures the mattress maintains its shape. Since your bed will be tossing and turning alongside you, we wanted beds that felt sturdy across the surface.

We’ve developed a rigorous testing methodology that tells us how each mattress performs and who it might be a good fit for. All of the beds on this list have been evaluated for pressure relief, cooling abilities, responsiveness, edge support, and much more.

Our team of certified sleep science coaches has tested more than 500 mattresses over the last decade, allowing us to guide more than 145,000 people to the best mattress for them. Not only do we use and evaluate these products ourselves, but we also consult with doctors and other professionals to ensure we keep up to date with the latest in sleep science and medicine. For example, Dr. Joe Tedesco (DPT, OCS, ATC, CSCS) comes into our studio to personally test mattresses and give a medical perspective on each product.

Plank Firm – Best Overall
The Plank Firm more than lives up to its name with its ultra-sturdy foams and supportive feel. While this bed certainly isn’t for everyone, it should be an ideal fit for back sleepers, stomach sleepers, and combination sleepers who want to feel more on top of their mattress than in it. For more information, check out our video review.
What our tester says:
“I think the Plank Firm is one of the best mattresses for stomach sleepers. Both sides of the mattress, the firm side and extra firm side, should give these sleepers the support they need to keep their hips in line with their shoulders. Back sleepers who like a firmer feel should also be happy on the firm side of the Plank.” – Nichole Mondshein, lead reviewer and staff writer
Helix Kids – Best Flippable Mattress for Kids

“What a great option for parents trying to find a mattress that will work for their growing child. I really liked the Helix Kids’ flippable, hybrid design. I found it offered high-quality materials and great support for younger people.”– Bridget Chapman, former senior product editor
Why It’s the Best Flippable Bed for Kids
DLX Classic – Best Flippable Mattress for Back Sleepers
Available in three different firmness levels, the DLX is a flippable hybrid mattress that we found to have enough support for back sleepers and enough cushioning for side sleepers. Its cooling capabilities, motion isolation, and edge support also make it a home run for couples.
What our tester says:
“When we tested this mattress, we found it compatible with back sleeping regardless of your body type. We also think this bed is a good choice for lightweight and average-weight side sleepers. Overall, we were very impressed with the bed’s performance across the board, as it earned at least 4 out of 5 stars in every test we put it through.” – Riley Otis, staff writer and certified sleep science coach
Why It’s the Best Flippable Bed for Back Sleepers
Zenhaven – Best Flippable Luxury Mattress
As a flippable mattress, side sleepers, back sleepers, and stomach sleepers alike should be able to find a side that works for them on the Zenhaven. This organic mattress is also made from high-quality latex foam that’s environmentally friendly and provides a bouncy, responsive feel. For more information, check out our video review.
What our tester says:
“I really like that the Zenhaven is a flippable mattress. The firmer side is great for stomach and back sleepers, while the softer side is great for side sleepers. Because it can cater to so many different sleepers, I think the Zenhaven is one of the best mattresses on the market for eco-friendly shoppers looking for an organic be made of natural materials.” – Logan Block, former content director
Why It’s the Best Luxury Flippable Bed
Layla – Best Flippable Memory Foam Mattress
It’s not often you find a foam mattress that’s comfortable for side sleepers and stomach sleepers alike, but the Layla fits the bill. With both a soft side and a firm side, it features foams that are both contouring and supportive. For more information, check out our video review.
What our tester says:
“The Layla is a memory foam mattress with the classic memory foam feel that many sleepers love. This bed features a lot of the material, so epitomizes its characteristic sinkage and contouring hug. As far as sides are concerned, I think side sleepers will prefer the ‘Soft’ side and stomach sleepers will be better off on the ‘Firm’ side.” – Bridget Chapman, former senior product editor
Why It’s the Best Flippable Memory Foam Bed
Latest Updates: In August of 2026, we updated this page to reflect updated testing and our new-and-improved, easy-to-read format. Both our mini-reviews and buyer’s guide got a facelift, so they should only include the information you absolutely need to choose the best flippable mattress for you.
Other Flippable Mattresses We Considered
Didn’t find what you were looking for in the list above? Here are two more flippable mattresses that didn’t make the cut:
Plank Firm Luxe
As the name implies, the Plank Firm Luxe is the luxury upgrade of our top pick, the Plank Firm. Like its predecessor, it features two firm sides: one extra-firm and one traditionally firm. Ironically, our testers found the Luxe a bit softer than the Plank Firm. It also features coils, making it a bit more responsive and supportive. But most importantly, it’s also more expensive than the Plank, hence why it missed our list.
Layla Hybrid
The complement to the Layla memory foam mattress is the Layla Hybrid, a flippable hybrid that also boasts dual-sided firmness. It skews a bit plusher than the Memory Foam mattress on both its soft and firm sides; the firm side feels closer to true medium-firm. The Layla Hybrid offers good pressure relief and decent motion isolation. It’s not as responsive as we’d like for a hybrid, and the edge support was on par with the Layla Memory Foam, so we opted for that bed instead.
How We Tested the Best Flippable Mattresses
When choosing the best flippable beds, comfort and quality were at the forefront of our minds. To ensure these beds checked these boxes, we focused on three key areas: firmness, temperature regulation, and support.
