If you’re looking for a firm bed that sets the standard for the flippable mattress game, try the all-foam Plank Firm. It has dual firmness: one side is designed to be firm (7.5 out of 10 on the firmness scale) and the other extra-firm (8 out of 10 firmness). This allows sleepers to decide what’s best for their needs and preferences. Its construction consists of high-density foams that offer stronger-than-usual support, and no matter which side sleepers choose, they’ll experience a soft, cooling cover. We tried out both sides of the Plank and concluded that Brooklyn Bedding definitely succeeded in creating a mattress that’s responsive, supportive, and yes, very firm.
Still, we had to test the Plank Firm’s pressure relief to be sure we’ve provide the most informed review possible. To do this, we employed our pressure map, which we lay across the mattress surface and use to track areas of high and low pressure. The pressure map does this by measuring our body temperature and pressure buildup. Areas of high pressure are shown with red and orange, moderate pressure is shown with yellow, and lower pressure is shown with green and blue. In the side sleeping position, and on the softer side, we noticed some pressure buildup at the shoulder and hip. Heavier side sleepers should be a bit more comfortable and find a little more relief, but overall we suggest a softer mattress. While back sleeping, we found less pressure buildup, with only a tad yellow at the hips on the pressure map.

When resting on the flippable Zenhaven, we felt like royalty, thanks to its luxurious materials: a cover of 100 percent organic cotton and New Zealand wool, followed by several plush latex comfort layers and a dense support layer. It has two firmnesses: a Luxury Plush side (6 out of 10 on the firmness scale) and a Gentle Firm side (7.5 out of 10 firmness). Because each side lies close to the industry standard of medium-firm (6.5 out of 10), we think it should work for most sleeping positions.
Our pressure map test showed some great results for both sides of the Zenhaven. Back sleeping and side sleeping, we saw overall low pressure. Stomach sleeping, we noticed that our hips sunk in a bit too much on the Luxury Plush side. However, most lightweight and average weight stomach sleepers should do well on the Gentle Firm side.

Finding the Ideal Firmness in a Flippable Mattress
Firmness Scale
When we test every mattress in studio, we place each bed on our mattress firmness scale from 1 to 10, with 1 being the softest and 10 being the firmest bed we’ve ever tested. A mattress with a firmness of 6.5 out of 10 is known as a true medium-firm mattress. These beds tend to provide the best balance of comfort and support. Which firmness you go with truly depends on your sleeping position and preferences, this is what we recommend. Side sleepers should aim for a softer mattress (4-6 on the scale) to cushion their shoulder and hug their hips without letting either sink in too much to shift their spine out of place. Stomach sleepers should go for a firmer bed (6-8 on our scale) in order for it to support your hips and lower back without letting anything sink putting your spine out of alignment. Back and Combination sleepers are the most interchangeable but we recommend aiming for a true medium-firm mattress sitting at a 6.5 so feel the support in their lower back but the softness in their shoulders and neck to ease any pressure points. One or Two Firmnesses
Flippable mattresses can come in one or two firmnesses, the beauty of a flippable mattress. The mattresses featured in this article have dual-sided firmness, but some brands have flippable mattresses with the same firmness on both sides. If you know what firmness level works best for you and you don’t foresee a need to switch firmnesses, then a flippable bed with one firmness is best.
It’s important to note that not all mattresses are flippable. If you’re unsure, we recommend checking in with the manufacturer. If your mattress isn’t flippable, you can prolong the life of your bed by flipping it 180 degrees from head to foot. That way, you aren’t putting pressure on the same areas of the bed every night.

Memory Foam

This makes them responsive or bouncy — a quality that’s important for combination sleepers or anyone looking to avoid sinkage. The coils in these beds add breathability and durability.
The focus on coils results in a bed with less pressure relief, unlike memory foam. Innersprings are popular with those who like a firmer feel. Because of its thin comfort layer, innersprings have poorer motion isolation. This is bad news for couples, since a mattress with high motion transfer makes it easier to feel each other’s movements at night.
Hybrid
Hybrid beds are the best of both worlds, using both coils and foam. They combine the innerspring’s durability and the memory foam’s pressure relief to create a balance of comfort and support. If body heat is too much with a partner or pet, or if you wake up sweaty, invest in a cooling mattress. While innerspring, latex, and hybrid mattresses tend to be the best for hot sleepers, a memory foam mattress with modern cooling technology can do the trick. When testing mattresses, we make sure to look out for materials that include materials that are breathable, phase changing, have gels, coils, or cooling covers, as these make a big difference in keeping you cool at night. Flippable mattresses tend to have the same cooling technology both sides and companies will be very transparent as to what cooling layers there are in each side.
When testing every mattress for cooling, we use a thermal gun to determine how fast a mattress dissipates the heat built up in the mattress. Our testers lay on the bed for 10 minutes in various sleeping positions and we then measure what temperature increase was and how long it takes for the mattress to return to its original temperature. We consider anything under an 8 degree difference good cooling and anything under 5, great cooling. The thermal gun also helps us understand if there are particular parts of the bed that holds more heat compared to the rest.
Durability
A mattress’ durability is dependent on its construction and quality of materials. Innerspring, latex, and hybrid mattresses tend to last around 10 years. Memory foam mattresses tend to last about seven years because the foam is more prone to sagging. However, some memory foam mattresses might last longer than hybrid or innersprings because the material quality is better. The memory foam bed might have a thick layer of high-density base foam, prolonging the lifespan.
Edge Support
Edge support refers to how supportive and sturdy the edges on your mattress are. Edge support is especially important for anyone who needs a little extra support when getting out of bed like seniors, heavy people, or anyone with chronic pain.
Edge support is also crucial for couples as it allows you to use more of the bed, stretch out the edges and not worry about rolling off or your pressure points sinking too much.
Because of the nature of flippable beds, they don’t tend to perform well for edge support, however it also depends of the material type. Memory foam and latex beds tend to perform the worst compared to hybrid and innerspring beds. We test for edge support by using a yard stick to measure the amount of sink experienced when sitting or laying on the edge of bed.
Motion Transfer
If you sleep with a partner or pet, it’s important to get a bed with good low motion transfer. Move isolation refers to the amount of movement that is felt across the mattress when your partner, pet or kid moves around.
A mattress that isolates motion well prevents you and your partner or pet from being disturbed by each other’s movements. Memory foam beds or models with thick comfort layers tend to be much better at isolating motion compared to innerspring mattresses that tend to perform worse because of their coil construction.
We test motion in a couple ways. First we use a drop ball test, our testers drop steel balls from various heights and use a seismograph to measure how much movement is felt across the mattress. The higher and bigger the lines are on the graph, the more movement you’ll feel across the bed. We also use a red wine test in which we place a glass of wine on one side of the mattress and rotate through various sleeping positions on the other side of the bed. How well the glass stays up, tells us immediately how much movement you would feel on the mattress. Because of the dual sides nature of flippable mattresses, motion transfer results might vary depending on the sides of the bed so we make sure to perform these tests on both sides of the mattress.

How Often Should You Flip Your Mattress
For a flippable mattress with a single firmness, it’s best to flip the bed twice every year. Using the other side of the bed every six months is great for the mattress’ durability.
For flippable mattresses with dual firmnesses, you might be better off rotating the mattress 180 degrees instead of flipping. This is especially true if one side suits your preferred firmness but the other side is too soft or too firm.
Most mattresses should not be flipped, unless they’re labeled as flippable or otherwise stated by the manufacturer. However, you can prolong the life of many mattresses if you rotate it 180 degrees (from head to foot). Mattresses with zoned support should not be rotated.
