It’s perfect for little ones who are growing — but, unfortunately, not supportive enough for adult sleepers. 

Choose the Helix Kids if …

• You want to invest in one mattress for your child. This mattress should accommodate your child from toddler to preteen years, so it’s a good way to get your money’s worth.

Memory foam mattresses are some of the most prized for durability and affordability. With flippable beds, they make for especially easy and lightweight mattresses to maneuver. The Layla memory foam mattress checks all of these boxes and more. It features both one plush, contouring side and a firmer, more supportive feel on the other. Either side can cater to a wide range of sleeper types, though back sleepers reign supreme. Its excellent motion absorption also makes it an attractive option for couples. But like many other foam beds, it doesn’t offer much in the way of temperature regulation.

Choose the Layla if …

• You shift between sleeping positions. Side sleepers should opt for the soft side, which gives deep relief at the shoulders and hips, where side sleepers put the most pressure. But back and stomach sleepers will likely be more comfortable on the firm side, where the foams are firm and supportive enough to keep the spine aligned.
• You’re a light sleeper with a restless partner. The Layla’s all-foam, slow-moving feel is perfect for absorbing motion. In our couple’s test, we barely felt a twitch travel across the bed.

Keep looking if …

• You want active cooling. We never felt like we’d overheat on the Layla mattress, but it didn’t provide much of a cool feel. Most hot sleepers may want something with more noticeable temperature regulation.
• You’re a heavyweight sleeper. As a memory foam mattress, the Layla isn’t the best choice for sleepers over 230 pounds, who need more support. Only back-sleeping on the firm side was comfortable for our tester in this category. I recommend the Plank Firm for these folks.

During testing, we rate each bed on our mattress firmness scale from 1 to 10, with 1 being the softest and 10 being the firmest bed we’ve ever tested. A mattress with a firmness of 6.5 out of 10 is known as a true medium-firm mattress. These beds tend to provide the best balance of comfort and support, keeping the spine aligned and reducing the risk of back pain.

But which firmness you go with truly depends on your sleeping position and needs, so many flippable mattresses offer two completely different firmness options to cater to multiple sleeper types. That way, you can accommodate multiple sleep styles as your preferences change. Others, like the DLX Classic, use the same firmness to increase longevity — you can flip your mattress to avoid indentations from repeated use.

How Firm the Best Flippable Mattresses Feel

Temperature Regulation

Nobody wants to sleep on a stuffy mattress. When testing mattresses, we make sure to look for materials that are breathable, phase-changing, or have gels, coils, or cooling covers, as these make a big difference in keeping you cool at night. You may want to opt for breathable foams or even latex, as studies show it can be more cooling than traditional memory foam: Flippable mattresses tend to have the same cooling technology on both sides.

In our mattress lab, we use a thermal gun to determine how fast a mattress dissipates heat. Our tester lies on the bed in various sleeping positions for five minutes, then measures the temperature increase. They also note whether or not the mattress feels cool, cozy, or sweltering.

Our average cooling rating for all the beds we’ve tested is 3.9 out of 5. The Plank Firm and Zenhaven performed about average, while the DLX Classic felt truly cool. The Helix Kids and Layla Original mattresses performed a bit below average, but likely won’t cause too much heat buildup.

How the Best Flippable Mattresses Scored in Cooling

Support

A supportive mattress ensures your spine is comfortably aligned, regardless of which position you take. To test whether a bed is supportive, we have testers of each weight category lie down on their side, back, and stomach, noting whether they feel comfortable. Though there’s no scoring metric for this category, it’s at the forefront of our minds during testing.

One aspect of support we do test is edge support. This refers to how well the perimeter of the mattress holds up when bearing weight. A mattress with strong edges will hold its shape and is therefore less likely to sag. That’s why we test edge support by sitting and lying down along the perimeter, seeing how far we sink, if at all. We even stack weight plates at the very edge and measure how far it dips.

But because of their unique construction, some flippable mattresses don’t offer the best edge support — though it all comes down to what’s inside the mattress. Firmer beds and those with coils tend to perform better in this category. 

Our overall edge support score, when you take every bed we’ve tested into account, is about 4 out of 5 – most of the mattresses we recommend fall near or above this number. Only the Layla, as an all-foam mattress, let us down in terms of edge support on either side.

Aside from the areas mentioned above, a lot more goes into finding the perfect mattress for your needs. Consider everything from what positions you sleep in, how much you weigh, any conditions, and whether you share the bed. The good news is that we also have these preferences in mind when testing, so we rate them for your benefit. 

For example, if you sleep with a partner or pet, it’s important to get a bed with good low motion transfer. Motion transfer refers to the amount of movement that’s felt across the mattress when your partner, pet, or kid moves around. If a mattress is good at isolating motion, it has low motion transfer.

You might also want a responsive mattress, which snaps back into place after you press down on it. These are easier to move around on, which can benefit combination sleepers and sexually active folks.

Finally, we also consider the company policies and practices that go along with the mattress. Think warranties, sleep trials, delivery, and return policies. We also note if a mattress is particularly difficult to unbox or has a potent off-gassing smell.

• Cumbersome: As innovative as flippable mattresses are, they tend to be heavier than the average mattress and aren’t exactly easy to move. You may need someone to help you flip over the bed.
