Methodology: How Do I Shop For Memory Foam Mattress Toppers?

To find the perfect memory foam mattress topper, it’s important to keep a few key details in mind. In my experience, the most important factors to consider are depth, firmness, and cooling properties.

Depth

The depth, or thickness, of a mattress topper lets you know how supportive it’ll be as well as how much loft it’ll add to your bed. Typically, they range from 2 to 4 inches thick, but some can be up to 8 inches deep. Heavier sleepers, those with broad shoulders, or folks looking to add a considerable amount of depth to their mattress are generally best-suited to a topper that’s at least 3-inches thick.

On the other hand, petite sleepers or those looking to add just a little extra comfort layer to their mattress might be better off with a 2-inch topper. That said, I’m rather petite but still prefer the deep pressure relief of an extra-thick topper! A lot comes down to personal preference, so it’s important to take some time and consider how much extra support and plushness you need.

Firmness

Some sleepers may be under the impression that a topper is meant to dramatically change the firmness of a mattress, but that’s not the case. Instead, you should view them as a way to enhance the comfort of your bed by adding extra layers of material! That said, toppers come in a variety of firmness ratings (ranging from extra-soft to firm) and can serve to add extra plushness or support.

For example, if you find your existing mattress to be a bit too firm, try to balance its feel with a soft topper. Conversely, a firmer mattress topper can make your mattress feel more supportive. Essentially, it’s best to carefully consider how the firmness of a topper will complement the feel and support of the mattress you have.

Cooling Properties

Memory foam has the tendency to trap heat and warm up, which is why hot sleepers might want to prioritize toppers with cooling properties. Of course, some toppers are crafted to actually feel cool to the touch, while others are geared more toward dissipating body heat. Meanwhile, some toppers are made to be temperature-neutral, meaning they’re designed to keep the same comfortable temp throughout the night.

That said, keep an eye out for memory foam toppers that have been infused with copper or graphite, as these materials are used to draw heat away from your body. Or, if you’re looking for something extra cooling, aim for toppers made with Phase Change Material. Phase Change Material (PCM) is a super cooling textile engineered to stay cool no matter how many times it’s washed. With memory foam toppers, PCM is often used in cover fabrics, infused into the foam itself, or both!

In this review, we’ll take a look at some temperature-neutral toppers alongside some toppers with advanced cooling properties so you can better determine which is ideal for you. Speaking of which, let’s dive into my roundup of the best memory foam toppers!

The TEMPUR-Topper Supreme can add a soft memory foam feel to your mattress!

Tempur-Pedic TEMPUR-Topper Supreme

Sleepers looking to top their mattress with a classic memory foam feel are sure to enjoy the slow sink into this TEMPUR-Topper Supreme.

I’ll be honest — this is my personal favorite memory foam mattress topper. It’s three-inches thick, offers a slow response to pressure, and tightly conforms to the body. If you’re on a mission to boost the depth of your mattress with a supportive memory foam topper, I heartily recommend giving this one a try.

Made entirely from the brand’s proprietary TEMPUR-Material, this topper is dense, durable, and kind of feels like a mini-mattress! It’s got a medium firm feel that I found to be compatible with every sleeping position, but I was most impressed by how it relieved pressure in my lower lumbar when I slept on my back.

It’s covered in a knit polyester blend, which feels super soft and breathable. Plus, it’s removable and machine washable, which makes maintenance pretty easy. Not all toppers come with cover fabrics, but I generally prefer those that do, as they serve as a protective layer.

Ultimately, my favorite thing about this topper is that it feels very durable, like it’s built to last. It’s 30-pounds, offers full-body pressure relief and, in my experience, makes a great substitute for a mattress when you’ve got an overnight guest. Plus, it’s backed by a 25-year warranty (which is not something I often see in the world of mattress toppers!).

Price: $239-$359, which is about standard for this brand. Plus, that generous warranty should inspire confidence but that Tempur-Pedic stands by its product.

Perfect For: Sleepers of all styles looking for a super durable topper with a very slow response to pressure.

Best Cooling Mattress Topper

The ViscoSoft Cooling Copper Topper uses a copper infusion to help dissipate body heat

ViscoSoft

If you’re on the hunt for a memory foam topper that’ll keep your bed and body cool, this one might be right up your alley.

Similar to the topper we just looked at, the ViscoSoft Cooling Copper Topper offers a moldable memory foam feel with medium firm support. It’s four-inches thick, which might make it ideal for sleepers looking to add a considerable amount of depth to their mattress. But what makes this topper unique is its super cooling properties!

It’s covered in an icy-crisp fabric called Phase Change Material, a textile that’s prominently featured in the world of cooling sleep accessories. In this case, it makes the whole topper feel very cool to the touch. That said, the cover fabric is removable, so feel free to throw it in the wash when it’s ready to be cleaned.

To make matters even cooler, this memory foam topper is infused with copper. Many bedding brands use copper infusions in order to draw heat away from the body. In my experience with this topper, the copper and Phase Change fabric work in tandem to create a uniquely soothing feel.

That said, hot sleepers should definitely check my full ViscoSoft mattress topper review!

Price: $219-$350, with a 5-year warranty. Also, shoppers can enjoy a 60-day trial period!

Softest Mattress Topper

Layla has the best cooling memory foam mattress topper available

Layla

If you’re looking for a way to make your bed more comfortable without adding too much depth, the Layla mattress topper might be the topper for you.

The Layla mattress topper is 2-inches deep with a soft firmness rating, making it ideal for sleepers looking to add just a little boost of plushness. Make no mistake  — this topper still offers that classic memory foam feel, with its slow response to pressure and deep sink into the material. But it’s important to note that this is the thinnest and softest topper in this round-up!

For me, the extra soft feel of this topper was most beneficial when I slept on my side. It served to relieve pressure at my shoulders and hips, while helping my spine maintain neutral alignment. That said, I found it to be really cozy in the back and stomach sleeping positions as well.

But something really cool (pun intended) about this topper is that the whole thing is infused with copper. Both the stretch-knit cotton cover and the memory foam itself are infused with a copper gel that helps this topper stay nice and cool. In fact, it’s the same copper gel used in the Layla mattress

As a hot sleeper myself, I appreciate how the copper in this topper seems to prevent it from trapping heat! For the full scoop on my experience with this topper, be sure to check my Layla mattress topper review

Price: $200-$400, depending on size. It also comes with free U.S. shipping, a 5-year warranty, and a generous 120-night trial period.

Perfect For: Sleepers who prefer an extra-plush memory foam feel!

Best Mattress Topper for Combo Sleepers

The Coop Home Goods Flip Topper!

Coop Home Goods

Not sure if you prefer soft or firm support? Well, you can choose both with this flippable mattress topper from Coop Home Goods.

Aptly named “Flip,” this topper gives sleepers the option to choose between a plush side, and a side that’s more firmly supportive. It’s made entirely of memory foam and has a thick 4-inch profile, perfect for folks looking to increase the depth of their mattress. But keep in mind that 2-inches are made from softer, low-density foam, while the other 2-inches are made from firm, high-density foam.

This dual-design might be particularly beneficial for combo sleepers, or those still experimenting with sleep style. For example, stomach sleepers might find that the firmer side of the topper helps them maintain healthy posture, while back and side sleepers may enjoy more pressure relief from the softer side.

One slight caveat to consider is that this topper doesn’t come with a substantial cover fabric (it’s covered in a thin layer of polyester). However, every purchase comes with a free waterproof mattress protector which is a major perk, in my book. Sleepers looking for a flippable mattress topper and a protector should definitely check my full Coop Home Goods mattress topper review

Price: $269-$289, with a 100-night trial period to test it out.

Perfect For: Sleepers who want a topper that lets them choose between soft and firm!

Best Mattress Toppers for Stomach Sleepers

Relaxing on a stack of Allswell mattress toppers!

Allswell Home Graphite & Copper Topper

Last but not least is this cool and cozy memory foam topper from Allswell Home.

It’s got a thick 4-inch profile and a firm memory foam feel, which might be best suited to heavier sleepers and/or those who sleep on their stomachs. Stomach sleepers typically need a firm topper to promote neutral spine alignment and alleviate tension in the lower back, and this one definitely did the trick!

That said, my favorite thing about this topper is how cool it feels. It’s infused with graphite and copper, both of which can draw heat away from the body and prevent the memory foam from warming up. But it also features a targeted cooling section in the middle of the topper that feels quite soothing on the skin. Of course, your body won’t be directly on the topper, but that middle area is definitely cool enough to feel through the fitted sheet.

Another great thing about this topper is that it comes at a pretty reasonable price point. In my experience, memory foam toppers typically start at around $200, but this one ranges from $159-$179. Hot sleepers on a budget should certainly check my full Allswell Home mattress topper review

FAQs

What is the best thickness for memory foam mattress topper?

Choosing the right depth, or thickness, largely depends on how much pressure relief you’re looking for. Heavier sleepers or those looking to add a considerable amount of depth to their mattress might be best suited to a 3 or 4-inch topper, while petite sleepers might be better off with a 2-inch topper.

Are memory foam mattress toppers hot?

Memory foam does have a tendency to trap heat and warm up throughout the night. That said, hot sleepers might want to aim for memory foam toppers that feature special cooling properties like copper and graphite infusions or Phase Change Material.

Are memory foam mattress toppers good for side sleepers?

Memory foam typically offers a slow response to pressure and a moldable feel, which might be particularly beneficial to side sleepers. The material conforms to the shoulders and hips when you’re in the side sleeping position, which can serve to relieve pressure throughout the body.
