So, you want to buy a new mattress and have narrowed it down to either the Casper or Saatva. These beds are super popular, supportive, and powered by brands that have been in the game for a long time. But when it comes to feel…well… they really couldn’t be more different.
Curious to know what the differences between these two beds are? Then keep reading for my full take on the Saatva vs Casper Mattress debate.
[Note: In all references to the Saatva, we are talking about the Luxury Firm model. It also comes in a Plush Soft Version and Firm model.]

Saatva vs Casper: Which is Better for You?
The Saatva is a firm innerspring mattress featuring springy coil support, while the Casper is a medium-firm all-foam mattress with a more balanced feel. Depending on your size, shape, and preferred sleeping position, one of these mattresses is likely to suit your needs better than the other. Take a look at some of my recommendations below. And if you’d like to learn more about each individual mattress, I’d recommend checking out the Saatva mattress review or Casper mattress review.
Who Should Buy a Saatva Mattress?

- I’d recommend the Saatva to stomach sleepers, it should give them the firm support they need.
- Heavier people (over 250 lbs), should like the Saatva. Its firm support and specialized edge support system will give them the lift they need.
- Combination sleepers should like the bouncy Saatva mattress, which will make it easy to change positions throughout the night.

Who Should Buy a Casper Mattress?

- Back sleepers who want a combination of support and gentle pressure relief at the lumbar region should like the Casper.
- The Casper does a good job of isolating motion, which could make it a better option for couples.
- Anyone who struggles with lower back pain might like the Casper. It features a gentle zoned support system and is a bit more pressure-relieving than the Saatva.

Paul, Casper customerSimilarities Between Saatva & Casper
- Though the Saatva is a classic innerspring mattress and the Casper is a gentler, all-foam bed, they both feature memory foam in a zoned support system.
- Both the Saatva and the Casper sleep cool.
- Both mattresses offer a responsive feel rather than hug-like sinkage. One of our best memory foam mattresses might be better-suited to sleepers looking for more cushioning around their pressure points.
Differences Between Saatva & Casper
- The Saatva is an innerspring mattress, while the Casper is an all-foam bed.
- The Saatva is more expensive than the Casper.
- The Casper performed better on our motion transfer test, which means you’re less likely to feel disturbed by a restless partner on this bed.
- The Casper is a bed-in-a-box mattress, while the Saatva comes uncompressed.
Comparing the Saatva & Casper Feel
Now that you have a brief overview of each of these mattresses, let’s get into the nitty gritty and discuss how they feel. Here, we’re going to get into the firmness and pressure relief of each bed.
I experienced these mattresses to have similar firmness levels. However, every sleeper is going to experience these factors a little differently (depending on body shape, size, and weight), so I always invite a few coworkers to test out the beds with me. Once we’ve each given the mattresses a fair shake, we share our personal thoughts with each other, and then average together any ratings we gave.

Casper
Though there was some variance in our reactions to the Casper, we ultimately arrived at an average firmness rating of 7 out of 10. This is a bit higher than the industry standard of 6.5 for medium firmness, so this bed is a touch on the firmer side.

For me, this bed offers a pleasant combination of pressure relief and support. As I stretched out on the mattress, I could feel my body gradually sinking into the structure, though not so much as to leave me feeling stuck. In fact, the bed’s zoned support system did a fantastic job of bolstering my body and keeping me positioned “on top” of the mattress. For this reason, I think combo sleepers could find a lot to love in this bed. It’s very easy to move around and change positions on the Casper.
Saatva
We were all pretty much in agreement about the firmness of the Saatva, arriving at a rating of 7, though it does feel like a bit of a firmer 7 than the Casper’s 7.
I found the Saatva had quite a firm feel. You’ll experience a little give into its quilted cover and Euro pillow top, but the majority of the bed is made of two coil systems, which quickly establish a bouncy feel. This lift on this bed makes it a great fit for combination and stomach sleepers who like to be positioned on top of their mattresses.

As a reminder, I’m discussing the Luxury Firm Saatva here. The bed also comes in two other firmnesses: Plush Soft (its softest version) and Firm (which is firmer than the Luxury Firm).
Comparing Saatva & Casper By Sleeping Position
To give you an even better idea of what these beds feel like, I’m going to break down how they might feel depending on your preferred sleeping position and body weight!
Casper
Back — The Casper is a great fit for back sleepers. It offered great lumbar support but still felt gentle and pressure-relieving in this position.
Side — The Casper felt more comfortable on my side than the luxury firm Saatva, but I think strict side sleepers will still find this bed a bit too firm. They might feel stiff around the shoulders and hips on this bed. I’d recommend they check out one of our best mattresses for side sleepers instead.

Stomach — The Casper felt okay on my stomach, but stomach sleepers will achieve a healthier spinal alignment on the Saatva mattress. Over time, my hips sunk into the Casper a little, which can lead to pain for stomach sleepers.
Body Weight — The Casper will likely feel softer to heavier people and firmer to lighter people. In general, I don’t think this all-foam mattress is supportive enough for heavy people (over 250 lbs). I’d recommend they opt for the Saatva or check out one of our best mattresses for heavy people.
Saatva
Back — The Saatva felt like a truly firm mattress when I was on my back. I got plenty of support and felt a lot of buoyant lift in this position.
Side — The Luxury Firm Saatva mattress felt much too firm when I was on my side. I could feel stiffness building up around my shoulders and hips in this position. I’d recommend strict side sleepers go with the Plush Soft model if they’re interested in the Saatva.
Stomach — My favorite position on the Saatva was on my stomach. I felt this bed lifting me up and supporting my hips, which helped me keep my spine in a straight line. This is really important for stomach sleepers, who need to keep their hips level with their shoulders to avoid back pain.

Body Weight — The Saatva will likely feel softer to lighter people who don’t sink through its pillow top as quickly, and firmer to heavier people. I’d recommend the Saatva to heavier people, I think this high-quality mattress should offer them plenty of support. Saatva also offers a mattress designed specifically for plus-size people, which you can learn about in the Saatva HD mattress review.

Comparing Saatva and Casper Mattress Materials
As I mentioned up top, these mattresses are incredibly different from one another, so let’s take a peek below their covers and see what’s going on in these beds’ constructions.
Casper
Cover — Made of a polyester blend, the Casper cover is cozy and soft. Plus, it’s totally removable by zipper!
Comfort Layer — The Casper’s top layer consists of Airscape™ perforated breathable foam, which feels similar to latex foam. It has a quick response to pressure for some immediate bounce. The material is still gentle enough to provide some slight sinkage for pressure relief and comfort. I should also add that the foam here is constructed with an open-cell design, which encourages airflow for breathability and cooling.
Transition Layer — Next up, you’ll land on my personal favorite part of the mattress: the transition layer of Zoned Support™ Memory Foam. This section is divided into two types of memory foam, with a softer one up top and a firmer one at the center. This brings a little lift to the hips and some cushioning and pressure relief to the shoulders, essentially allowing the bed to show some TLC to different parts of the body in the ways they need it most.
Base Layer — The base of the bed is made up of heavy-duty poly foam that gives the mattress its structure.

Saatva
Cover — The Saatva has an organic cotton cover that is soft and breathable. It’s also quilted with a bit of foam for some immediate comfort.
Pillow Top — The Euro pillow top section of the mattress includes a thin layer of gel memory foam to offer some nice cushioning and pressure relief.
Support Layer — Up next is a support layer composed almost entirely of individually wrapped pocketed coils. This makes for a super bouncy structure right off the bat, which means you’re likely to feel more “on top” of the bed than “in” it. The coils also encourage airflow throughout the mattress.
Base Layer — Built with sturdy steel coils and foam edge support, this is the Saatva’s main support system. The extra foam edge support helps maximize the usable surface area of the mattress, which could be a real selling point for couples.

Casper vs Saatva: Best Qualities
Well, what did I tell ya! Comparing these mattresses is like comparing apples and oranges, or, you know, duvets and comforters. They’re not very similar because they’re built totally differently. Check out a few of my final recommendations below.
Casper Best Features
- The Casper sleeps cool thanks to its top layer of open-cell proprietary foam.
- The Casper is a nice choice for back sleepers, who will get a good mix of pressure relief and support on this bed.
- The Casper could work well for couples, since it isolates motion pretty well, meaning you’re unlikely to be disturbed by a restless partner.

Paul, Casper customerSaatva Best Features
- The Saatva could be a real winner for anyone after that classic innerspring feel, as its coil-on-coil construction is super bouncy and supportive.
- That being said, I think the bed’s bounce is one of its standout characteristics, and it could be a big selling point for combination sleepers.
- I really like the Saatva in the Luxury Firm or Firm firmness levels for stomach sleepers, they’ll get enough support to keep their hips in line with their shoulders on these beds.
- The Saatva is a nice choice for heavier sleepers who need extra support and durability from their bed.

Comparing Saatva and Casper Customer Service
We rate each company’s customer service team based on our own personal experience using their site or calling them. We consider factors like call wait time, politeness, and responsiveness. Companies can receive one of four ratings: Stellar, Great, Satisfactory, or Poor.
Saatva Sleepopolis Customer Service Rating
Satisfactory: I used the chat function on Saatva’s site. Though my question was answered, it took about 25 minutes for someone to reach me, which is longer than I would have liked.
Casper Sleepopolis Customer Service Rating
Great: I also used the chat function on Casper’s site. My question was answered quickly, but I was sent a link rather than given an answer. If they did answer my question directly, I would have given them a Stellar rating.
Comparing Other Models from Casper and Saatva
At this point, we’ve got a pretty solid sense of what makes the Casper and Saatva mattresses tick, but how do they compare to the other beds in their respective mattress brands’ portfolios? To find out, I’ll compare and contrast them to a few of their mattress siblings.

- The Wave Hybrid is a hybrid mattress, while the Casper Original is an all-foam mattress.
- This Wave is well-suited for those in need of deep pressure relief, particularly strict side sleepers.
- It could also be a great option for anyone suffering from back pain.

Casper Hybrid
- As the name suggests, the Casper Hybrid is the hybrid version of the original Casper bed, so utilizes the same foams as the original.
- However, the Casper Hybrid uses a pocketed coil support system.
- This results in some excellent mobility and bounce, making it a nice medium-firm option for combo sleepers.
- It costs more than the Original but less than the Wave.

Our Review Process
Our Sleepopolis reviewers personally test each mattress. We start by unboxing the mattress to figure out how difficult (or easy) it is to get the mattress from the box to the bed. Then, we spend time laying on the bed in different positions, taking time to assess it on our backs, stomachs, and sides. Next, we perform our Sleepopolis tests, using specialized tools to measure qualities like motion transfer, bounce, and pressure relief. Our last step is to open up the mattress and take a look at each layer. These steps allow us to give our final verdict on the mattress. Jump back to our mattress picks.
