Nectar vs Purple Video Review

Nectar vs Purple: Which is Better for You?

Depending on your body type, preferred sleeping position, and whether or not you sleep with a partner or pet, one of these mattresses is likely going to be better suited for your particular needs and preferences. Take a look at some of my recommendations below.

Who Should Buy the Nectar

  • The Nectar is a better choice for anyone who likes the feeling of “sinking” into their mattress. The soft foams in the Nectar make it especially body-contouring and comfortable. This is ideal for side sleepers, especially those who need extra pressure relief and sinkage around sensitive joints, like the hips and shoulders.
  • The Nectar is also less expensive than the Purple. A queen sized Nectar costs around $1,099, while a queen sized Purple costs around $1,399. While this isn’t the biggest price difference, budget-conscious shoppers might still want to keep this in mind when looking for their new bed.

Who Should Buy the Purple

  • The Purple is the way to go if you prefer more of an “on top” feel to your bed. The Purple includes a grid in its construction that has a nice bouncy feel and is easy to move around on. This is a strong inclusion for combination sleepers, who need to be able to switch positions easily during the night.
  • I’d recommend that hot sleepers opt for the Purple over the Nectar. The breathable structure of the Purple grid, included in the comfort layer of this mattress, promotes airflow and prevents the Purple from trapping body heat.

I think both of these beds are good choices for back sleepers. They both scored around medium-firm on our firmness scale — a score which helps to promote a neutral alignment while lying on one’s back. I’d also readily recommend both mattresses to couples. Both the Nectar and the Purple have strong motion isolation, meaning you’re unlikely to be disturbed by your partner’s movements during the night. Surprisingly, the traditional memory foam Nectar actually has stronger edge support and more durability than the Purple. This may be an added plus for couples, since they should be able to spread out and use the entire surface area of their mattress.

Nectar vs Purple: Similarities and Differences

The Nectar and Purple are both high-quality mattresses. They both use multiple layers of foam, and they both scored around the industry standard for a medium-firm mattress. However, these two beds have very different overall feels, mostly thanks to the Purple’s unique grid structure. Take a look at how they compare below. I’d also encourage you to check out my full Purple mattress review and Nectar mattress review.

Main Similarities

  • Perhaps the biggest similarity between these two mattresses is that they utilize high-density poly foam in their support layers. This base material provides stability and shape to both structures. However, it is important to note that the Nectar includes 7 inches of high-density foam, while the Purple only includes 4 inches.
  • The Nectar and Purple are both bed-in-a-box mattresses, so they arrive compressed and will probably need a day or two to fully expand. To be specific, the Purple actually comes rolled up in a bag, but the unboxing and off-gassing periods shouldn’t differ because of this.
  • Though we’re only looking at the original Nectar and Purple models in this comparison, it’s worth noting that both of these brands sell a variety of different mattresses, some of which we’ll discuss later on in this guide.
Screen Shot 2023 11 06 at 4.23.56 PM
The Purple mattress in the Sleepopolis studio.

Main Differences

  • While the Nectar uses 2 inches of gel memory foam in its comfort layer, the Purple includes 2 inches of Purple’s Hyper-Elastic Polymer grid. The Purple grid has a very unique feel to it  — most sleepers either love it or hate it. However, I would like to highlight that this grid adds some balanced pressure relief to this mattress, and its open structure allows for extra breathability and airflow.
  • The Nectar has more of a typical memory foam feel, so you should definitely feel more sinkage and body-contouring from this mattress. Conversely, the Purple bed has a bouncier and more buoyant feel, so it keeps sleepers more “on top” of its layers.

Purple and Nectar Mattress Feel Comparison

Now that we’ve gone over the construction specs of these two mattresses, let’s figure out how these beds actually feel. To do this, I’m going to examine these mattresses for different feel factors, such as firmness, pressure relief, bounce, and sinkage.

Before we start, it’s important to note that all of these factors are inherently subjective, and they can change a lot depending on one’s body size, shape, and weight. Because of this, my read of these beds could very well differ from your own.

Nectar

My coworkers and I rated the Nectar as a 6 out of 10 on the firmness scale. On this scale, 1 equates to an especially soft mattress, while 10 equates to an especially firm one. The industry standard for a medium-firm mattress is set at a 6.5 on the firmness scale, so the Nectar mattress is on the slightly softer side.

As we explored above, the Nectar is constructed primarily with plush memory foam, meaning that most folks will experience it as quite gentle and comforting. Everyone interacts with memory foam differently — some sleepers sink straight through the material, while others take a bit longer to do so. Nevertheless, most sleepers will likely feel more “in” the Nectar than “on top” of it. This feel could work for many folks, but it is especially helpful for side sleepers and back sleepers who prefer a softer bed. On the other hand, stomach and combination sleepers may find that the Nectar is a touch too soft for their needs.

P1038809
Back sleeping on the Nectar mattress.

Purple

The Purple is a much firmer mattress, so it snagged a score of 7 out of 10 on the firmness scale. Again, when compared to the industry standard of 6.5 for medium firmness, this bed is solidly firm.

Like the Nectar mattress, the Purple’s overall feel is dominated by a single material — its Purple Grid. However, where the Nectar’s memory foam layers produce a ton of sinkage, body-contouring, and pressure relief, the Purple’s grid feels more bouncy, supportive, and firm. This could be a slam dunk for combination sleepers, who usually need to move around and change positions multiple times throughout the night. Back and stomach sleepers may also enjoy the firm lift they should receive from the Purple mattress. Side sleepers, on the other hand, likely won’t get the pressure relief they need at the shoulders and hips from the Purple. I suggest that these sleepers check out our roundup of the best mattresses for side sleepers.

Comparing What it’s Like to Sleep on the Nectar and the Purple

Every mattress will feel different to sleepers depending on their individual preferences and attributes, like body weight and sleeping position. Below, we’ll take a look at how the Nectar and Purple mattresses perform for a variety of sleepers.

Nectar

Back — This bed’s firmness is a touch softer than medium-firm, but its support should still keep these sleepers’ spines neutrally aligned. The Nectar works especially well for back sleepers who like to feel more “in” the bed, as there’s some great body-contouring present in this mattress.

Side — Side sleepers should be able to rest comfortably on the Nectar mattress, thanks to its layers of soft foam that allow for extra pressure relief and body-contouring.

Stomach — These sleepers usually need a mattress that at least scores a 7 out of 10 on the firmness scale. Because of this, stomach sleepers might find that the Nectar isn’t strong enough to keep their hips lifted in line with their shoulders, so their spine could fall out of alignment. Instead, I recommend that these sleepers check out our roundup of the best mattresses for stomach sleepers.

P1038819

Body Weight — The Nectar will feel firmer for people under 130 pounds, so they might not be able to sink into this mattress enough to feel its pressure relieving capabilities. On the other hand, the Nectar is likely far too soft for heavier sleepers (those over 250 pounds). These sleepers should opt for a firmness mattress that is able to support their body weight, like one of the beds featured in our best mattresses for heavy people roundup.

Purple

Back — These sleepers should really enjoy the “on top” feeling they get from this mattress. The Purple should offer just the right balance of firmness to comfort, keeping these sleepers’ spines neutrally aligned, while still offering enough pressure relief for their lumbar region.

Side — The Purple doesn’t offer much sinkage, so side sleepers that have especially sensitive joints probably won’t get the pressure relief they need from this mattress.

purple side sleeper

Stomach — While the Purple still isn’t the firmest mattress on the market, it should be supportive enough to keep lightweight sleepers’ (those under 130 pounds) spines neutrally aligned throughout the night.

Body Weight — Sleepers under 130 pounds might find that the Purple is too firm to relieve pressure around their joints, while those over 250 pounds might find that this mattress isn’t firm enough to keep their spine in a neutral alignment.

Comparing Nectar and Purple Mattress Materials

In this section, I’m going to give you a brief rundown of each bed’s unique construction. Although both the Nectar and the Purple are all-foam beds — so neither one of them contain coils — their materials are still quite different.

Nectar

Cover The party kicks off with a cozy mattress cover that’s made from quilted polyester and nylon, giving this bed some initial breathability.

Comfort Layer Beneath the cover, you’ll find two inches of gel memory foam. This material has a slow response to pressure, so it provides plenty of space for sleepers to “sink in,” allowing for deep, contouring relief at the shoulders, hips, and lower back. Although memory foam does have a slight reputation for overheating at night, the Nectar mattress has mitigated this issue with their cooling gel infusion.

Transition Layer Underneath the first layer of memory foam lies a 3-inch section of Nectar’s dynamically-adjusting foam. With a quicker response to pressure than the memory foam above it, this layer helps to ease the sleeper into the firmer base below.

Base Layer As mentioned above, the base layer includes seven inches of high-density poly foam. This firm material gives the Nectar mattress its stability and shape, working to cradle and support the softer foams above it.

ConstructionGraphics Nectar 1
Looking at the Nectar’s foam layers.

Purple

Cover The Purple cover is crafted from a polyester and spandex blend, so it’s both gentle and stretchy.

Comfort Layer — Right underneath the cover is where you’ll find the brand’s signature Purple Grid. This bouncy — almost rubbery — material has a quick response to pressure, with walls that collapse under the sleeper’s weight. This creates a slight contouring feel that should provide some nice comfort around pressure points at the shoulders and lower back. However, it’s worth noting that this pressure relief isn’t as deep (or intense) as what you’re likely to experience on the Nectar.

purple grid

Transition Layer Below the Purple grid lies a 3.5-inch layer of polyurethane foam. This material functions primarily to support the bouncy comfort layer, as well as ease the sleeper into the firmer foam base below.

Base Layer Finally, we arrive at a 4-inch foundational layer of high-density poly foam. As in the Nectar, this material brings in some overall shape and stability to this mattress.

Nectar vs Purple: Best Qualities

After giving these mattresses a thorough vetting, it’s time to wrap up this comparison with a few final thoughts. Below, I’ll highlight all my major takeaways and provide you with some expert recommendations to help you choose the right mattress for you.

First and foremost, I think those in need of deep pressure relief at the shoulders, hips, and lower back should stick with the Nectar mattress. Built with thick layers of plush memory foam, this bed provides plenty of body-contouring and sinkage. If you’re someone who wants to feel more “in” your mattress than “on top” of it, this could be the bed for you.

On the other hand, if you’re someone who wants to feel more of an “on top” feel to your mattress, I’d recommend going with the Purple. This bed has a bouncy, supportive, medium-firm feel that should work well for combination sleepers and folks who often move around and change positions during the night. I’d also add that the Purple sleeps much cooler than the Nectar, which could be an important consideration for both hot sleepers and couples.

To get even more specific about my recommendations, let’s summarize a few of my favorite aspects from each of these mattresses.

Nectar Best Features

  • If you’re a fan of memory foam mattresses, you could find a lot to love in the Nectar. In my opinion, this bed embodies all the best attributes of the material: its deep sinkage, cozy body-contouring, and targeted pressure relief.
  • For that reason, side sleepers with shoulder pain could be especially well-suited to the Nectar. These folks are likely to experience plenty of pressure relief as they press into this mattress throughout the night.

Purple Best Features

  • I believe that the Purple mattress works best for combination sleepers, largely thanks to the added bounce in this bed and the overall medium-firm feel of it.
  • The Purple is also a great cooling mattress option for hot sleepers, as the open-cell Purple grid promotes plenty of airflow in the night.

Comparing Purple and Nectar Customer Service

Here at Sleepopolis, we like to personally interact with each brand’s customer service representatives. This way, you’ll know whether or not the brand will be there to help if you need it. Each brand can receive one of four scores: Stellar, Great, Satisfactory, or Poor.

Nectar Sleepopolis Customer Service Rating

Great: I gave Nectar this rating because I was immediately paired with a helpful agent after asking a question in their chat function. This agent answered my questions thoughtfully, and he even offered to hop on the phone in order to help me place my order.

Purple Sleepopolis Customer Service Rating

Stellar: When I went on Purple website, the customer service chat function immediately popped up to ask if I had any questions. When I did ask a question, it was answered politely and in detail.

Comparing Other Models from Purple and Nectar

As I mentioned at the beginning of this comparison, both Nectar and Purple sell a few different mattresses. Let’s explore some of them below.

Nectar Lush

  • This supremely soft mattress is made up of five foam layers for a feel that’s deeply pressure-relieving and luxurious.
  • If you’re a side sleeper looking for a super plush feel, I think the Nectar Lush could be a fantastic option for you. Plus, this mattress sleeps a little cooler than the original Nectar.
  • However, one thing to note is that the Nectar Lush is more expensive than the Nectar, which could be a dealbreaker for budget-conscious shoppers.

Purple Hybrids

Aside from the original Purple mattress, the brand also sells a few different hybrid mattresses. All of these beds combine the brand’s signature Purple Grid with layers of springy pocketed coils. If you’re looking for hybrid mattresses, I recommend taking a look at our roundup of the best hybrid mattresses.

  • Purple Hybrid: The firmest Purple mattress — the Purple Hybrid — features a 2-inch thick Purple Grid over a tall section of pocketed coils. This creates a firm, bouncy feel that should work well for back, stomach, and combination sleepers.

Back sleepers should be happy on the Premier 3, while the Premier 4 is a nice choice for side sleepers looking for added pressure relief.

Our Review Process

Our Sleepopolis reviewers personally test each mattress. We start by unboxing the mattress to figure out how difficult (or easy) it is to get the mattress from the box to the bed. Then, we spend time laying on the bed in different positions, taking time to assess it on our backs, stomachs, and sides. Next, we perform our Sleepopolis tests, using specialized tools to measure qualities like motion transfer, bounce, and pressure relief. Our last step is to open up the mattress and take a look at each layer. These steps allow us to give our final verdict on the mattress. Jump back to our mattress picks.
