Who is the Coop Sleep Goods Retreat Mattress Topper Best For?

First, let’s go over who I recommend this mattress topper for and who may want to consider a different topper.

Who I recommend the Coop Sleep Goods Retreat mattress topper for

  • Sleepers looking for a plush feel should enjoy this shredded memory foam topper.
  • Back, side, and stomach sleepers should all be comfortable on this topper, depending on the firmness level of the mattress below.
  • Combo sleepers or those who toss and turn will appreciate this topper’s elastic straps.

Who I don’t recommend the Coop Sleep Goods Retreat mattress topper for

  • If you want a machine washable topper, this won’t be the best option for you. This topper is spot clean only and it doesn’t have a removable cover you can machine wash.
  • If you want a topper in a size other than queen or king size, you will need to look for another topper. The Retreat is only available in those two sizes.
  • While this topper does allow for some breathability, it’s not the best cooling mattress topper. For something super cooling, I recommend looking at a latex mattress topper instead.

What is the Coop Sleep Goods Retreat Mattress Topper Made Of?

Mattress toppers can be made with a variety of materials, such as memory foam, latex, down, and more. Let’s take a look at what the Coop Sleep Goods Retreat topper is made with.

Cover: The outer cover of this topper is made from 100 percent brushed microfiber polyester. The cover features a baffle box construction, meaning stitches are used to create “pockets” of fill contained by the cover. This ensures the fill stays evenly distributed. Additionally, the cover features four elastic straps — one in each corner — to secure the topper to your mattress.

Fill: The Retreat topper’s fill is 95 percent cross-cut memory foam and 5 percent polyester fiber. The memory foam used in this topper is both CertiPUR-US certified and GREENGUARD GOLD certified.

Additionally, the Coop Sleep Goods Retreat mattress topper is hypoallergenic.

This topper is available in two sizes: queen and king. I tested a queen size topper for this review.

How Does the Coop Sleep Goods Retreat Mattress Topper Feel

I test out the Coop Sleep Goods Retreat mattress topper to get a sense of how it feels, lying on it in different positions and on different beds. In testing, I found this topper to be quite comfy! Adding it onto a mattress gave it a pillow top feel, thanks to the plush pockets of shredded memory foam

I liked that I felt some cushioning and pressure relief from the foam, but it was a different experience than a solid block memory foam topper. It reminded me of a down mattress topper’s plushness, but I didn’t find myself sinking through the topper like I have experienced with down toppers. However, if you like a very smooth sleep surface, the pockets of memory foam might feel a bit lumpy to you.

Regarding temperature, I didn’t feel noticeably warm or cool on this topper. Having shredded foam fill does make it more breathable than a solid block of foam, it allows for more airflow within the topper, which can be beneficial for temperature regulation. But it wasn’t a noticeably great mattress topper for hot sleepers, in my opinion.

Now let’s go over how this topper will feel on mattresses of different firmness levels:

Soft: Adding the Coop Retreat topper to a soft mattress will add a plush, pillow top-style layer. I think this is a good option for sleepers who already like how soft their bed is, but want to add a cloud-like, luxurious feel.

Medium-firm: A medium-firm mattress with the Coop Retreat topper should feel a bit softer. I think back sleepers will appreciate how the foam fills in their lumbar region, as well as getting pressure relief around the shoulders.

Firm: Adding this topper to a firm mattress will provide a soft and cushioned feel, but you will likely still feel the firm support of the mattress below. I think this could be a good option for stomach sleepers or heavy sleepers (who weigh over 250 pounds) who need a firmer, more supportive mattress but want a touch of softness.

My Verdict on the Coop Sleep Goods Retreat Mattress Topper

the coop retreat topper in the packaging

After thorough testing, I ended up really liking the Coop Sleep Goods Retreat mattress topper. Its style and construction is somewhat unique, compared to other mattress toppers I have tested. I like how it provides a cushioned, plush pillow top feel to the top of your mattress.

I think this topper can work for all sleeping positions. Lying on my back, I felt pleasant pressure relief around the shoulders and felt the shredded foam filling in my lumbar region. To me, this topper is a great pick for back sleepers, as it provides a comfortable level of cushioning in this position. I think it can also work for side and stomach sleepers, depending on their mattress.

Stomach sleepers need to have a firm and supportive mattress to prevent their hips from sinking — which causes lower back pain. Many toppers are too soft for stomach sleepers, but I didn’t feel my hips sinking when lying on my stomach with the topper placed over a firm mattress.

Inversely, I think side sleepers will like this topper so long as their mattress is soft enough that they don’t feel excess pressure on pressure points, like the shoulders and hips. While this topper provides some pressure relief, it doesn’t provide the deep contouring a thick slab of memory foam would.

Additionally, I love that this topper features straps and is hypoallergenic. That’s a big pro for sleepers with allergies. However, it is spot clean only.

Should I get a mattress topper or a new mattress?

Mattress toppers can be an easy fix to an old or uncomfortable mattress. However, if your mattress is over 10 years old or has visible deterioration, then you should consider replacing your mattress. See our best mattress page to see some great options.

Is a mattress topper the same as a mattress protector or mattress pad?

No, these three are all different products. A mattress topper is meant to add a thick layer of additional cushioning or change up the feel of the bed. A mattress protector is like a fitted sheet, but meant to keep out allergens and liquids. A mattress pad is like the middle ground, offering some comfort and some protection. See our mattress pad vs mattress protector vs mattress topper explainer for more information.
