Not happy with the feel of your current mattress, but not quite ready to buy a new one? A mattress topper could be the answer to your troubles. But which one is right for you? Well, that’s where I come in.
Let me introduce you to the Lucid Gel Memory Foam mattress topper. I personally tested this mattress topper and in this review, I’ll go over what it’s made of, what it feels like, and who I think it’s best for. Could it be your key to better sleep? You’ll just have to keep reading to find out.
Or if you just want the short version, skip to the end for my review summary.
Who is the Lucid Gel Memory Foam Mattress Topper Best For?
There are lots of things to consider before you click that “add to cart button.” For example, what is your sleeping position? Are you a hot sleeper? What’s your body type? And what are you looking to change about your current mattress?
Here’s who I think the Lucid Gel Memory Foam topper will work best for and who should consider buying another topper.
Who I recommend the Lucid Gel Memory Foam mattress topper for
- This topper is an excellent choice for side sleepers. I found that it offered a lot of contouring and pressure relief, which is key for comfy side sleeping. It can also work quite well for back sleepers.
- Hot sleepers will also appreciate the cooling gel and ventilation holes used in this topper to prevent it from trapping heat.
- Shoppers on a budget will appreciate the Lucid Gel Memory Foam topper’s price — under $100 for a queen size. That’s a great price for a thick, high quality topper, as many queen size toppers are over $100.
Who I don’t recommend the Lucid Gel Memory Foam mattress topper for
- Stomach sleepers won’t get much benefit from the Lucid Gel Memory Foam mattress topper, in my opinion, as it will only make their mattress softer. Stomach sleepers need a firm, supportive sleep surface to prevent lower back pain.
- Combination sleepers, or anyone who tosses and turns, may also be wary of the fact this topper doesn’t have straps, a skirt, or any other method of attaching to the bed to keep it in place. It may shift throughout the night under your fitted sheet.
- Heavy sleepers, who weigh 250 pounds or more, may also want to opt for a thicker topper, especially if they are side sleepers. Heavy people will sink through the foam more than average or lightweight people and may “bottom out” and not receive the pressure relief they need. Fortunately, Lucid does offer a thicker, 4-inch version of this topper that may work better.
What is the Lucid Gel Memory Foam Mattress Topper Made Of?
This topper is a 3-inch gel memory foam mattress topper. It’s made entirely of gel memory foam (hence the name!) and has ventilation holes throughout to allow for airflow within the topper. That helps to keep it cooler, in addition to the gel infusions, which draw heat away from the body and prevent you from overheating in the night.
There are also 2-inch and 4-inch versions of this gel-infused memory foam mattress topper. I only tested the Lucid 3-inch gel memory foam topper for this review, though. If you want less cushioning and sinking-in, then I would recommend the 2-inch. If you want more, go for the 4-inch.
The Lucid Gel Memory Foam topper is available in seven different sizes: twin, twin XL, full, full XL, queen, king, and California king. I tested the queen size for this review.
How Does the Lucid Gel Memory Foam Mattress Topper Feel
I tested this topper by laying on it in different sleeping positions, as well as testing it on different mattresses.
This foam definitely has that slow-sinking-in feeling you expect from memory foam. It contours around you a lot, which is really cozy. I’d say it’s quite plush and squishy, and definitely seems to offer a good amount of pressure relief.
Here’s how it felt when I tried the topper with mattresses of different firmness levels.
Soft: Putting the Lucid mattress on a soft mattress is softness-squared — it leads to an extremely plush sleep surface. I wouldn’t generally recommend it, unless you’re looking for an ultra-soft mattress, as you’ll sink into the bed quite deeply and it may be difficult to move around. But, this could be a good option for side sleepers who experience joint pain and need serious pressure relief.
Medium-firm: When I tested the Lucid topper with a medium-firm mattress — a 6.5 out of 10 on our firmness scale — I thought it made the bed much more plush but still pretty supportive. I thought it lowered the firmness to medium-soft, or about a 5 out of 10 on the firmness scale. I think side sleepers with a medium-firm mattress who are seeking more pressure relief would benefit from adding the Lucid topper to their bed.
Firm: The firm mattress I tested the Lucid with was an 8.5 out of 10 on our firmness scale. When I added the topper, it provided much more pressure relief and contouring, and I thought it lowered the bed’s overall firmness to a 6.5 or 7 on the firmness scale — closer to medium-firm.
Lucid Gel Memory Foam Mattress Topper Sizes and Prices
If this topper is sounding like the best mattress topper for you, I bet you’re wondering how much it costs. Here are the prices, broken down by size. Prices listed will be before discount or offer for each size.
While this Lucid mattress topper is fairly simple in its design, it is effective at cushioning pressure points for side sleepers and providing a soft, pressure-relieving sleeping experience for back sleepers. The plush memory foam conforms around the sleeper to provide deep contouring and the gel-infusions and ventilation holes work well to prevent body heat from being trapped.
However, this topper isn’t a great choice for stomach sleepers, as it will only make your mattress feel softer. Stomach sleepers need firm support to keep their hips from sinking in and causing their backs to bow out of alignment. It also doesn’t have any features to secure the topper to the bed, so it may shift around at night if you toss and turn a lot.
Still, this topper comes in at a fairly affordable price, with a queen size priced just under $100.
