Helix Midnight Luxe Mattress Overview
As a brand, Helix places an emphasis on customization. If you go to their website, you can take a sleep quiz in order to get a personalized mattress recommendation. Their standard line of mattresses all have a similar construction of foams laid over individually wrapped coils. The Luxe line adds zoned support to the coils, a pillow top, cooling Tencel cover, and reinforced edge support. I’ll go further into all of these upgrades, as well as the mattress’s overall construction, later in this review. Like all of the models in the Helix line, the Midnight Luxe is a bed-in-a-box mattress that comes to your door rolled up and compressed. That means it has a 24- to 72-hour off-gassing and decompression period once it’s opened. If you’re bothered by the odor, leave your new bed in a well-ventilated room. I can assure you that the smell is nothing to worry about, and it should dissipate after one or two days.

This info then helps me come up with an overall score. I gave the Helix Midnight Luxe an overall score of 4.3 out of 5, and you can see its individual category scores at the end of the video or below.
Helix Midnight Luxe Mattress Sleepopolis Score
One category where I scored the Helix Midnight Luxe slightly lower was motion isolation. The springs give the mattress a lot of bounce, which causes movement to ripple across the surface of the bed. This is something to keep in mind if you sleep with a partner and either one of you is easily woken up. What Is the Helix Midnight Luxe Made Of?
The Helix Midnight is 14 inches tall with five layers. Let’s learn a little bit more about each specific layer.
Cover – The Midnight Luxe’s breathable cover is made of Tencel, a natural fiber derived from Eucalyptus. It has a soft and luxurious feel and helps with temperature regulation.
Pillow Top – Next up is a Premium Cooling Pillow Top layer quilted with gel foam to provide some initial pressure relief and cushioning.
Comfort Layer – The Helix Luxe has a two-layer comfort layer. First up is a section of High-Grade Helix Responsive Foam, which is also included in the comfort layer of the standard Helix. This material provides ergonomic support and prevents the sleeper from sinking all the way down to the coils in this bed. Next, there’s a layer of Copper Gel Memory Foam, which adds some extra contouring and pressure relief.
Transition Layer – This layer is made from Memory Plus Foam, which is also included in the comfort layer of the standard Helix Midnight. Like typical memory foam, this addition allows for added pressure relief around sensitive areas like the shoulders, hips, and lower back.
Support Layer – Next up is a layer of more than 1,000 individually wrapped coils. These coils have zoned support, which means that they’re softer at the shoulders for added pressure relief and firmer at the hips to help promote a neutral spinal alignment. Zoned support is ideal for sleepers with back pain, as it helps keep the spine nice and straight (the key to preventing and soothing back pain).
Base Layer – Lastly, the Helix Midnight Luxe includes a layer of DuraDense foam, just like in the standard model. This foam adds a bit of support and durability to this mattress.
Edge Support – All four sides of the Helix Midnight Luxe model have reinforcement around them to make sure that you can use the full surface area of your mattress without fear of falling off the sides. The standard Midnight only has this on two sides of the bed.
Helix Midnight Luxe Mattress Firmness
Now is a good time to say that mattress firmness is not completely objective Your weight, sleep position, and personal preferences will all affect how hard or soft you find any given model. At the same time, I always try to give you a balanced firmness score by having several colleagues try out a mattress, in addition to myself. They give their rating, and then I average the scores together. Here’s how the Helix Midnight Luxe felt:
I gave the Helix Midnight Luxe a 6 out of 10 on our mattress firmness scale, where 1 is the softest and 10 is the firmest. For context, the industry standard for medium firm is a 6.5, so I’d classify this as a medium-soft to medium-firm bed. It’s supportive without putting pressure on the joints, and also has a nice, bouncy feel due to its hybrid construction. I gave the original Helix Midnight a 6.5 out of 10, meaning that the Luxe version is just a bit softer.
Additionally, the Midnight Luxe’s extra pillow top layer makes it feel more cushioning than the standard Midnight. I’d especially recommend this mattress to sleepers who suffer from back pain since there’s extra plushness, plus the zoned support helps promote a healthy, straight spinal alignment.

Sleeping Position and Body Weight
We recognize that people come in all shapes and sizes, and people of every size deserve a mattress that works for their body type. We use the weight categories light, average, and heavy to more easily categorize sleepers based on how mattresses will perform for their body type, as most beds are designed for the group we call “average” (130 to 250 pounds).
As a general rule, lighter sleepers don’t require as much support as average weight sleepers, and mattresses will tend to feel firmer to them. On the other hand, heavy sleepers tend to need more support than average weight sleepers, and they usually sink into their mattress more.
As far as sleeping positions go, side sleepers tend to need a softer mattress, while stomach sleepers usually need a firmer, more supportive one. Back sleepers typically fall somewhere in the middle.
Is the Helix Midnight Luxe a Good Mattress for Light Sleepers (Under 130 pounds)?
- Light Back Sleepers – These sleepers should be happy on the Helix Midnight Luxe, as they’ll get some nice contouring around their lower back.
- Light Side Sleepers – Lighter side sleepers should be happy on the Helix Midnight Luxe, but if they prefer an especially soft bed, I’d recommend that they check out our roundup of the best soft mattresses for more pressure relief.
- Light Stomach Sleepers – Light stomach sleepers could be happy on the Helix Midnight Luxe if they only spend part of the night on their stomach. In general, though, I’d recommend that these sleepers opt for firmer mattress, like those in our best firm mattress roundup.
Is the Helix Midnight Luxe a Good Mattress for Average Weight Sleepers (130–250 pounds)?
- Average Weight Back Sleepers – These folks should be happy on the Helix Midnight Luxe. It offers a nice balance of pressure relief and support. I especially recommend this model if you struggle with back pain, as it offers a bit more lumbar support than the standard Midnight.
- Average Weight Side Sleepers – The Midnight Luxe could also be a satisfying fit for these sleepers, since it has a little bit of a plushier feel.
- Average Weight Stomach Sleepers – I wouldn’t recommend the Helix Midnight Luxe for strict stomach sleepers because they typically need a firmer mattress to offer proper spinal support. These sleepers can check out our roundup of the best mattresses for stomach sleepers instead.
As someone who falls into the average weight back sleepers category, I definitely felt the lower lumbar spine support instantly when testing this mattress. The lumbar support helped with my chronic back pain. My hips and lower back were sinking into the mattress, but I still felt cushioned by the bed and I was incredibly comfortable.

Is the Helix Midnight Luxe a Good Mattress for Heavy Sleepers (Over 250 pounds)?
- Heavy Back Sleepers – Heavy back sleepers could like the Midnight Luxe. Its zoned support structure offers a lot of lift around the hips, which should support these folks well during the night.
- Heavy Side Sleepers – Similarly, the Midnight Luxe could work for heavy side sleepers. It should offer them some nice pressure relief, while also helping them maintain a healthy spinal alignment.
- Heavy Stomach Sleepers – The Helix Midnight Luxe mattress isn’t going to be supportive enough for heavy stomach sleepers. One of our best mattresses for stomach sleepers could be a better fit for these sleepers.
Helix Midnight Luxe Mattress Performance
In the Sleepopolis mattress lab, our testing goes beyond just sleeping position and body weight. Read more below to see how the Helix Midnight Luxe performed on evaluations in some of our other categories.
Helix Midnight Luxe Mattress Pain Relief Performance
Pain relief is an important factor to consider when choosing a bed. It’s also closely tied to pressure relief, which is a measure of how well a bed cushions sensitive pressure points throughout the body.
To see how a mattress relieves pressure, we use a test called the pressure map. This involves rolling out a special mat on top of the mattress and lying down on it in both the side- and back-sleeping position. The mat measures how much pressure is exerted on different parts of the body, then produces a color-coded chart — or a “map” — that shows pressure areas on a gradient ranging from low pressure (blue) to high pressure (red). Take a look at the standard Helix Midnight Luxe’s pressure map results below.
Before looking over the results, you’ll want to take your sleeping position into account. For example, I don’t recommend the Helix Midnight Luxe to stomach sleepers. So, they’ll want to steer clear of this mattress, regardless of what the pressure map says. The rule of thumb is to consider sleeping position first, then the pressure map results afterwards.
Based on these results, I think the Helix Midnight Luxe is adept at relieving pressure for sleepers with back pain, shoulder pain, and hip pain. The pressure map is mostly blue, with just a touch of green in all of those areas.
Motion Transfer
Motion transfer is a measure of how much movement ripples across a mattress’s surface. It’s a good indicator of how disturbed you’ll feel by someone else’s tossing and turning on the opposite side of your bed.
I test motion transfer with a few different methods. First, I simply lie down next to a colleague, we both roll around, and see if we can feel each other’s movement. After that, we do the same thing again, but with a full wine glass on the mattress. The less the liquid moves, the better the mattress is at isolating motion. While my colleague and I couldn’t feel each other’s movements too much, the wine test was a different story. The liquid sloshed around a bit and actually spilled at one point.
I ended up spilling the wine on the Helix Midnight Luxe when I was testing for motion isolation by tossing and turning on the bed. This is useful to know if you or your partner is a restless sleeper.

Finally, there’s our seismometer test. I place this device on one side of the mattress and drop a 10-pound steel ball from three different heights on the other side. The seismometer measures the levels of disturbance. Here’s what the motion transfer looked like on the Helix Midnight Luxe.
Even though the seismometer results are decent, the spillage during the wine test tells me that the Helix Midnight Luxe isn’t the best at isolating motion. If you wake up easily and motion isolation is important to you, you may want to consider another bed.
Responsiveness
Responsiveness refers to how easy it is to move around on a mattress. I found it very easy to move around on the Helix Midnight Luxe, thanks to its bouncy springs. This tells me that it’s a good mattress for sex and combination sleeping — both of which involve moving around and switching positions.
Cooling
I think that the Helix Midnight sleeps cool enough on its own (the bed’s springs leave plenty of room for airflow), but the Midnight Luxe sleeps even cooler due to its Tencel cover. You can also pay extra for an optional GlacioTex cooling cover if you want even more cooling features.
As a more formal cooling test, I measure the temperature of each mattress with a thermal gun, which uses thermal imaging to show how quickly a mattress heats up after someone lies down on it. More than 15 degrees Fahrenheit indicates poor cooling capabilities. 10 to 15 degrees indicates decent cooling, 5 to 10 degrees indicates good cooling, and less than 5 degrees indicates excellent cooling. Below are the results of the Helix Midnight Luxe.
As you can see, it only heated up 3.3 degrees after I laid on it, indicating excellent cooling. When considering this, the bed’s construction, and all of its additional cooling features, I think the Helix Midnight Luxe is one of the best cooling mattresses out there.
Edge Support
The term “edge support” refers to the strength of a mattress’s perimeter. If a mattress has strong edge support, you can spread out and use its entire surface without the edges sagging. I test this by sitting on the edge of the mattress and seeing if I feel it collapse under my weight. If there’s little give and I still feel lifted, it’s an indicator of strong edge support.
The Helix Midnight Luxe has especially strong edge support because there’s reinforcement around all four sides of the bed (the standard model only has reinforcement on two sides). You should be able to use the entire surface of the bed and still feel propped up.
Helix Midnight Luxe Mattress Performance For Couples
When deciding if a mattress is a good match for couples, I take several of the above performance areas into consideration. Overall, I think the Helix Midnight Luxe is a solid choice for couples because it can cool down two bodies at once, has strong enough edge support for both you and a partner to spread out, and is responsive enough for sex.
The one category that leaves something to be desired for couples is motion isolation. However, I’d only worry about this if either you or your partner are easily woken up at night.

Now that I’ve covered what the Helix Midnight Luxe is made of, how it feels, and how it performs on our tests, we get to the ultimate question: Is it the best mattress for you? Here’s a review of who I think will enjoy this hybrid bed and who should look elsewhere.
Who I Recommend the Helix Midnight Luxe Mattress For
- Combination sleepers should be comfortable on the Helix Midnight Luxe, as it is has a lot of responsiveness and bounce. You likely won’t feel “stuck” in the bed, and switching positions should feel easy.
- I like the Helix Midnight Luxe for back sleepers and side sleepers. The medium-soft to medium-firm feel should give these folks the right balance of comfort and support.
- Hot sleepers should have no problem staying cool on the Helix Midnight Luxe due to its construction and multiple cooling features.
Who I Don’t Recommend the Helix Midnight Luxe Mattress For
- I wouldn’t recommend the Midnight mattress to heavier sleepers (those over 250 pounds). I don’t think these individuals will get the support they need from the Helix Midnight Luxe. Luckily, Helix also has a mattress specifically designed for larger body types — the Helix Plus mattress — that’s worth looking into, or customers can take a look at our roundup of the best mattresses for heavy sleepers.
- I think stomach sleepers will find that the Helix Midnight Luxe doesn’t offer enough firmness or support. They’d be better off on the firmer Helix Dawn. They can also check out our best mattresses for stomach sleepers.

The Sunset Luxe is designed to be the softest model in the Helix Luxe line, and we think the brand definitely delivered on that front. We rated it a 5.5 on our mattress firmness scale, and found it to have that slow-sinking feel that we’ve come to associate with memory foam.
- Price: Both the Midnight and Luxe and Sunset Luxe are the exact same price.
- Sleeping position: As the softer bed, we found the Sunset Luxe to be the better — or at least more contouring — option for side sleepers, although they should also be comfortable on the firmer Midnight Luxe. Back sleepers are better off on the Midnight Luxe, and neither option is ideal for stomach sleepers.
- Cooling: Since they have similar constructions and coils that allow for plenty of airflow, both of these options are good cooling mattresses.
- Body weight: The Midnight Luxe should be supportive enough for heavy back sleepers and side sleepers over 250 pounds. For the Sunset Luxe, we generally don’t recommend such mattresses to heavy sleepers.

Helix Midnight Luxe vs Helix Moonlight Luxe
The Moonlight Luxe is still on the softer end of the Luxe line. In fact we gave it the same score as the Sunset Luxe — a 5.5 out of 10 on the mattress firmness scale. However, we found it slightly more responsive, which makes it easy for combination sleepers to switch sleeping positions.
- Price: All of the Luxe models are priced the same.
- Sleeping position: The Moonlight Luxe is the cushier option for side sleepers, and we found the Midnight Luxe to be better for back sleepers. Neither model is the best fit for stomach sleepers.
- Cooling: Once again, the similar construction makes these mattresses equally adept at cooling.
- Body weight: We don’t recommend the Moonlight Luxe to heavy sleepers over 250 pounds, but heavy back sleepers and side sleepers should be comfortable and supported on the Midnight Luxe.

Helix Midnight Luxe vs Helix Dusk Luxe
Both the Helix Midnight Luxe and Helix Dusk Luxe are meant to be medium-firm mattresses, but we found the Dusk Luxe to be slightly firmer. We rated it a 6.5 out of 10 on our mattress firmness scale, where we rated the Midnight Luxe a 6 out of 10.
- Price: Each Helix Luxe model costs the same.
- Sleeping position: Both options have the right blend of comfort and support for back sleepers. The more responsive Dusk Luxe is probably better for combination sleepers, while the softer Midnight Luxe is better-suited for side sleepers. Neither mattress is a great match for stomach sleepers.
- Cooling: Once again, the similar construction of a cooling cover, cooling pillow top, and breathable coils makes each mattress a natural fit for hot sleepers.
- Body weight: While we don’t recommend the Dusk Luxe for heavy sleepers over 250 pounds, we think the Midnight Luxe is supportive enough for heavy back sleepers and heavy side sleepers.

Helix Midnight Luxe vs Helix Twilight Luxe
Now we’re getting into the firmer mattresses in the Helix Luxe line. That said, the Twilight is interesting when it comes to firmness, as we rated the standard version a 7 out of 10 on our mattress firmness scale and the Luxe version a 6.5 out of 10 — the same as the Midnight Luxe. However, we found the Twilight to be a bit bouncier and more responsive.
- Price: These mattresses are priced the same on the Helix website.
- Sleeping position: We think both options are ideal for back sleepers. Since the Twilight Luxe is more responsive, it has a slight edge over the Midnight Luxe for combo sleepers. But the Midnight Luxe is better for side sleepers, while neither option is the best choice for stomach sleepers.
- Cooling: We found both of these mattresses to be effective cooling options due to their airflow-promoting coils.
- Body weight: Both models should give enough support to heavy back sleepers and heavy side sleepers, but not heavy stomach sleepers.

Finally, we come to the firmest mattress in Helix’s Luxe line — the Helix Dawn Luxe. We rated it a 7 out of 10 on our mattress firmness scale, so it’s definitely firmer than the Helix Midnight Luxe.
- Price: Both models are priced the same.
- Sleeping position: We think the Midnight Luxe and Dawn Luxe are both ideal for back sleepers. The firmer Dawn Luxe is definitely better for stomach sleepers, while the softer Midnight Luxe makes more sense for side sleepers.
- Cooling: Similar constructions mean similar cooling abilities. We think both of these should be good options for hot sleepers.
- Body weight: It’s the same as our recommendations for sleeping position. Heavy back sleepers could be comfortable on either of these mattresses. Heavy side sleepers should stick with the Midnight Luxe and heavy stomach sleepers should go for the Dawn Luxe.

Our Review Process
At Sleepopolis, our team of Certified Sleep Science Coaches personally test each mattress. We start by unboxing the mattress to figure out how difficult (or easy) it is to get the mattress from the box to the bed.
