Helix Midnight Elite Mattress Overview
The Helix Midnight Elite mattress combines layers of plush foams and coils to provide a comfortable yet supportive sleeping experience. As a luxury model, it’s made with high quality materials that promote healthy spinal alignment in different sleeping positions. The mattress is a bit softer than average, which is perfect for sleepers who want a soft mattress that isn’t too soft.
The Midnight Elite arrives compressed in two boxes, with one containing the mattress and the other the topper, which is the top foam and microcoil layer that you zip into the mattress. They’re quite heavy (weighing nearly 200 pounds together), so you may need help setting it up.
Similar to other bed-in-a-box mattresses, you may notice an off-gassing smell. After unboxing any such mattress, it is recommended to leave it in a ventilated space for 24 to 48 hours to allow the comfort layers to regain their shape and any possible smell to dissipate.

What Is the Helix Midnight Elite Mattress Made Of?
The Helix Midnight Elite is a 16-inch hybrid mattress featuring foam and microcoil comfort layers and a pocketed coil system to provide a hotel bed-like feel. Here’s a layer-by-layer breakdown.
Cover – This mattress has a quilted foam pillow top made from Helix’s patented GlacioTex Elite cooling fabric that boasts excellent temperature regulation and pressure relief to keep you comfy and cool all night.
Comfort Layer – The Midnight Elite’s comfort system has five layers consisting of three memory foam layers (called Memory Plus Foam) and two microcoil layers. This unique combination gives the mattress a responsive, bouncy feel while keeping the soft, hugging sink of foam. The microcoils also help promote airflow. The last foam layer is made from Helix’s proprietary Helix Dynamic Foam, which offers extra support and cushion.
Transition Layer – The Helix Midnight Elite’s transition layer is made from Helix’s Responsive Foam, which is designed to keep the sleeper well-supported and prevent them from sinking into the coils.
Support Layer – At the base of this Helix mattress is an 8-inch layer of individually pocketed steel coils with built-in zoned lumbar support, which promotes a healthy neutral spine alignment for different sleeping positions. It also has reinforced edges to help you maximize your mattress sleeping space. A DuraDense foam layer at the very bottom provides extra support and maintains structure.
Helix Midnight Elite Mattress Firmness
Firmness is subjective, which is why we have multiple Sleepopolis Certified Sleep Science Coaches give each mattress a firmness rating and then average the scores for a final rating. We rate our mattresses on a scale of 1 (softest) to 10 (firmest). The industry standard for a medium-firm mattress is 6.5 out of 10.
It’s important to remember that your ideal level of firmness will depend on factors such as your body weight, height, and preferred sleeping position. Your size and preferences may be completely different from someone else’s.
After some back and forth, we came up with a score of 6 out of 10, with 1 being the softest and 10 being the firmest. The industry standard for medium-firm is 6.5, so I’d say the Midnight Elite is softer than average.
The Helix Midnight Elite mattress has plush, cloud-like comfort layers you sink a bit into. However, it didn’t get uncomfortable since the Midnight Elite’s microcoil layers kept me supported and from sinking in too much.

Sleeping Position and Body Weight
We recognize that people come in all shapes and sizes, and people of every size deserve a mattress that works for their body type. We use the weight categories light, average, and heavy to more easily categorize sleepers based on how mattresses will perform for their body type, as most mattresses are designed for the group we call “average” (130 to 250 pounds).
As a general rule, lighter sleepers don’t require as much support as average weight sleepers, and mattresses will tend to feel firmer to them. On the other hand, heavy sleepers tend to need more support than average weight sleepers and tend to sink into the mattress more.
As far as sleeping positions go, side sleepers tend to need a softer mattress while stomach sleepers usually need a firmer, more supportive one. Back sleepers are usually somewhere in the middle.
Is the Helix Midnight Elite a Good Mattress for Light Sleepers (Under 130 pounds)?
- Light Back Sleepers – I think back sleepers will sleep comfortably on this Helix mattress because of the great balance of cushion and support for the back it provides.
- Light Side Sleepers – The Midnight Elite is also a good match for side sleepers who want comforting pressure relief for their hips and shoulders.
- Light Stomach Sleepers – This mattress is okay for stomach sleepers since it may feel slightly firmer for some, but others may feel like they won’t get enough lift for their hips and may want to check out something firmer.
Is the Helix Midnight Elite a Good Mattress for Average Weight Sleepers (130–250 pounds)?
- Average Weight Back Sleepers – The Midnight Elite is a fantastic option for back sleepers since they’ll benefit from the zoned support of its coil system, which should help keep their spine in alignment and offer pressure relief where it’s needed.
- Average Weight Side Sleepers – I would also recommend this Helix mattress for side sleepers, especially for those who prefer a cushy, contouring sinking feel but don’t want to compromise on support.
- Average Weight Stomach Sleepers – Stomach sleepers may want to stay away from this mattress since it’ll feel too soft to provide adequate support. We have some better picks for them in our roundup of the best mattresses for stomach sleepers.
Is the Helix Midnight Elite a Good Mattress for Heavy Sleepers (over 250 pounds)?
- Heavy Back Sleepers – I think this mattress could work well for heavier back sleepers, especially if they prefer a soft, plush bed feel.
- Heavy Side Sleepers – These sleepers would probably love sleeping on the Helix Midnight Elite since it can provide enough support and comfort for their bodies and sleep position.
- Heavy Stomach Sleepers – Stomach sleepers should look for mattresses that keep them more lifted up on the bed since they’ll probably sink in too much on the Midnight Elite. I recommend checking out the options on our best mattresses for heavy sleepers instead.
Helix Midnight Elite Mattress Performance
A large part of our mattress review process is running a variety of tests that evaluate how the mattress relieves pain, isolates motion, cools, responds, and provides edge support. Our team of Certified Sleep Science Coaches conduct these tests to provide our readers with an objective view of what it would be like to sleep on each mattress. Read on to see how the Helix Midnight Elite performed.
Helix Midnight Elite Mattress Pain Relief Performance
When we refer to pain relief, we mean how well a bed is able to support various pressure points on your body while you sleep. When there is a build up of pressure at the back, shoulders, or hips, you’re likely to experience pain over time.
To test pain relief, we roll a specialized mat on top of the mattress and lay on it in a few sleeping positions. The mat senses pressure and translates the results into an easy-to-read graphic using thermal imaging. Areas displaying yellow to red indicate high pressure buildup, and areas with blue to green indicate low pressure.
Before looking at the Helix Midnight Elite pressure map, consider your sleeping position. For example, we don’t recommend very soft mattresses to stomach sleepers due to a lack of support in the hip area, which can lead to lower back pain.
Looking at the results, we can see very little pressure in the back area, which is great news for back and side sleepers with back pain. There is also low pressure in the shoulder area, so back and side sleepers should find shoulder pain relief. We can see pressure starting in the build in the hip region. This shouldn’t be an issue for back sleepers, but side and stomach sleepers with preexisting hip pain may not find relief.
Motion Transfer
If you sleep with a partner, pet, or child, you know how frustrating it can be to be disturbed by motion from their side of the bed. A mattress with low motion transfer is able to isolate this motion and prevent you from feeling their tossing and turning at night. We come up with our motion transfer score using a few different tests.
Human Test
The first test is simple: we just lie down on the mattress with a colleague, roll around, and see how much of each other’s movement we feel. I could feel my colleague get into the bed, but this was really the only motion I was able to detect.
Wine Test
We also place a full wine glass on the mattress and see how much the wine moves around with us. If the liquid has zero to little movement, then it’s a safe bet that the mattress has low motion transfer, which is what you want to see. On the Helix Midnight Elite, the wine had very little movement, which shows you probably won’t be woken by a partner’s movement throughout the night.
Seismometer Test
Finally, there’s our seismometer test. This involves dropping a 10 pound steel ball from heights of four inches, eight inches and 12 inches, then measuring the disturbance it causes: the bigger the lines on the graph, the bigger the disturbance and the higher the motion transfer. These three heights represent three levels of motion: tossing and turning, getting in and out of bed, and jumping on the bed.
Based on the graphs above, the Helix Midnight Elite performed well in terms of motion isolation. I was impressed by these results, and I don’t think you will be disturbed by a tossing and turning partner or if they’re getting in and out of bed.
Responsiveness
We test a mattress’s responsiveness by laying down and seeing how easy it is to roll around on. Memory foam usually has a low response to pressure, while hybrid mattresses with coils (such as the Helix Midnight Elite) tend to have a high response to pressure. Responsive mattresses are usually good for sex since they make it easy to change positions and move around. These traits also make them good for combination sleepers who switch sleeping positions at night.
I found the Helix Midnight Elite to be very responsive and easy to move around on. I don’t think you’ll feel trapped in this bed, and the coils provide a slight bounce to aid in switching sleeping positions.
Cooling
Two people sleeping on a mattress will generate more heat than one person. But thanks to the Midnight Elite’s patented cooling tech and breathable coil layers, that shouldn’t be a problem. Helix’s patented GlacioTex Elite cooling fabric helps with temperature regulation, and the microcoils and 8-inch pocketed coils promote airflow through the mattress.
Most hybrid mattresses are going to be more cooling than polyfoam or memory foam mattresses, and this remains true for the Helix Midnight Elite. I found it very cooling, which makes it a great option for hot sleepers. We are currently in the process of testing mattress cooling with a thermal gun but haven’t done the test on this mattress yet.
Keep in mind that several outside factors can affect cooling, including the temperature of your bedroom, how close your bed is to an air vent or window, and your body’s own temperature, which can vary from person to person.
Edge Support
Sharing the bed with someone means you’re sharing bed space with them, so if you want to maximize your mattress’s sleeping surface, you’ll want a mattress with good edge support. Edge support refers to how well your mattress’s edges can support you when you sit or lie down on the sides. It can also be a great sign of a mattress’s durability.
I put the Helix Midnight Elite’s edge support to the test by lying down and sitting on its sides. I’m happy to report that it has great edge support since it kept me well-supported. I noticed a bit of sinkage when I sat near the edge, but it wasn’t much. On the other hand, I didn’t sink at all while lying down.
Helix Midnight Elite Mattress Performance For Couples
Based on the performance results above, I think the Helix Midnight Elite Mattress could be a solid choice for couples. The cooling features should prevent you from overheating, and the excellent edge support can let you both really spread out and use the entire surface of the mattress. This bed is great at isolating motion, so you should both be uninterrupted by each other’s movement. Finally, this bed is responsive, which makes it good for sex.

The Helix Dawn is the firmest model offered by Helix Sleep. Like the Midnight Elite, it has a hybrid construction and is a good choice for couples. The Helix Dawn is offered in two models: the standard model and the Luxe model.
- Price: The Helix Midnight Elite is the more expensive of the two.
- Sleeping position: The Midnight Elite is best for back and side sleepers, while the Dawn is best for back and stomach sleepers.
- Cooling: Both mattresses performed very well on our cooling tests.
