Is Helix Midnight Elite a Good Mattress for You?
To start off, we put each of our mattresses through something called a “Rest Test,” where we lie down on the bed for an uninterrupted 15-minute power nap. This gives us a big-picture assessment of how it performs before we get into some of our more specific tests. Here’s how my colleague Amelia felt napping on the Helix Midnight Elite mattress:
“The Helix Midnight Elite offers a really plush feel. Lying on the mattress, I felt a lot of cushioning and sinkage, but it is simultaneously really supportive. This is a really comfortable blend of pressure relief and support. I also thought the cover felt really cooling.”

How Firm is the Helix Midnight Elite Mattress?
Let’s talk about mattress firmness, one of the most important factors to consider for sleep quality. Rating the mattress firmness is a bit tricky since it’s highly subjective. That’s why I tested the Midnight Elite with my coworkers and got the average rating of all our firmness ratings.
After some back and forth, we came up with a score of 6 out of 10, with 1 being the softest and 10 being the firmest. The industry standard for medium-firm is 6.5, so I’d say the Midnight Elite is softer than average.
The Helix Midnight Elite mattress has plush, cloud-like comfort layers you sink a bit into. However, it didn’t get uncomfortable since the Midnight Elite’s microcoil layers kept me supported and from sinking in too much. I think the Midnight Elite is a versatile and comfortable mattress for different sleepers, especially for those who prefer to sleep on their back or side.

Is the Helix Midnight Elite a Good Mattress for Heavy Sleepers (over 250 pounds)?
- Heavy Back Sleepers – I think this mattress could work well for heavier back sleepers, especially if they prefer a soft, plush bed feel.
- Heavy Side Sleepers – These sleepers would probably love sleeping on the Helix Midnight Elite since it can provide enough support and comfort for their bodies and sleep position.
- Heavy Stomach Sleepers – Stomach sleepers should look for mattresses that keep them more lifted up on the bed since they’ll probably sink in too much on the Midnight Elite. I recommend checking out the options on our best mattresses for heavy sleepers instead.
Helix Midnight Elite Mattress Pain Relief Performance
If you suffer from body pain, you’ll want a mattress with excellent pressure relief for a quality, pain-free night’s sleep. Body pain develops whenever there’s a buildup of pressure in a certain area, like your hips, shoulders, or back regions. Having a mattress with great pressure relief can lessen or even prevent those pains and aches from appearing.
To see how well the Midnight Elite can relieve pain, we created pressure maps to show how much pressure builds up in specific areas when you lie down. Blues and greens represent low pressure, while red and orange areas mean high pressure.
Back Pain – Pressure maps show there’s little to no pressure buildup in the back, which is great news for back sleepers and side sleepers with back pain. Unfortunately, stomach sleepers will likely feel the Helix mattress is too soft for healthy sleep posture.
Shoulder Pain – Again, fantastic results for back and side sleepers with shoulder pain. Rolling over to my side, I felt super comfortable and cushioned — and the map reflects that.
Hip Pain – Back sleepers with hip pain will feel most comfy on this mattress, compared to side and stomach sleepers. Though you can see some pressure starting to form on my hips on the pressure map when sleeping on my side, I still felt supported and cozy.
Helix Midnight Elite Mattress Performance for Couples
If you share a bed with someone, factors like motion transfer, sex, edge support, and cooling will be essential for your and your partner’s comfort. Let’s take a look at how the Helix Midnight Elite accommodates couples:
Motion Transfer
Motion transfer is the movement you feel on your side of the bed when your partner moves around or vice versa. For a night of uninterrupted sleep, you’ll want a mattress with low motion transfer and one that absorbs movement well.
To put the Midnight Elite’s motion transfer to the test, I dropped a 10-pound steel ball on the mattress at different heights to simulate different types of disturbances – tossing and turning (four inches), getting out of bed (eight inches), and jumping on the bed (12 inches). The bigger the lines, the bigger the disturbance.
Based on the graphs above, the Helix Midnight Elite performed well in terms of motion isolation. You probably won’t be disturbed by a tossing and turning partner or if they’re getting in and out of the bed.
Sex
The best mattress for sex will have a good mix of bounciness and responsiveness. Fortunately, I found the Helix Midnight Elite to be very responsive and easy to move around on, so I’d say that this mattress is a good mattress for sex.
Cooling
Two people sleeping on a mattress will generate more heat than one person. But thanks to the Midnight Elite’s patented cooling tech and breathable coil layers, that shouldn’t be a problem. Most hybrid mattresses are going to be more cooling than polyfoam or memory foam mattresses, but since this Helix Elite mattress has extra cooling features, I found it very cooling, which makes it a great option for hot sleepers.
Edge Support
Sharing the bed with someone means you’re sharing bed space with them, so if you want to maximize your mattress’s sleeping surface, you’ll want a mattress with good edge support. Edge support refers to how well your mattress’s edges can support you when you sit or lie down on the sides. It can also be a great sign of a mattress’s durability.
I put the Helix Midnight Elite’s edge support to the test by lying down and sitting on its sides. I’m happy to report that it has great edge support since it kept me well-supported. I noticed a bit of sinkage when I sat near the edge, but it wasn’t much. On the other hand, I didn’t sink at all while lying down.

What is the Helix Midnight Elite Mattress Made Of?
The Helix Midnight Elite is a 16-inch hybrid mattress that features foam and microcoil comfort layers and a pocketed coil system to provide a hotel bed-like feel. Here’s a layer-by-layer breakdown.
Cover – It has a quilted foam pillow top that’s made from Helix’s patented GlacioTex™ Elite cooling fabric that boasts excellent temperature regulation and pressure relief to keep you comfy all night.
Comfort Layer – The Midnight Elite’s comfort system has five layers consisting of three memory foam layers (called Memory Plus Foam) and two microcoil layers. This unique combination gives this Helix mattress a responsive, bouncy feel while keeping the soft, hugging sink of foam. The microcoils also help promote airflow. The last foam layer is made from Helix’s proprietary Helix Dynamic Foam, which offers extra support and cushion.
Transition Layer – The Helix Midnight Elite’s transition layer is made from Helix’s Responsive Foam, which is designed to keep the sleeper well-supported and prevent them from sinking into the coils.
Foundation Layer – At the base of this Helix mattress is an 8-inch layer of individually pocketed steel coils with built-in zoned lumbar support, which promotes a healthy neutral spine alignment for different sleeping positions. It also has reinforced edges to help you maximize your mattress sleeping space. A DuraDense foam layer at the very bottom provides extra support and maintains structure.
Helix Midnight Elite Mattress Unboxing and Off-Gassing
The Midnight Elite arrives compressed in two boxes, with one containing the mattress and the other the topper, which is the top foam and microcoil layer that you zip into the mattress. They’re quite heavy (weighing nearly 200 pounds together), so you may need help setting it up.
Similar to other bed-in-a-box mattresses, you may notice an off-gassing smell. After unboxing any such mattress, it is recommended to leave it in a ventilated space for 24 to 48 hours to allow the comfort layers to regain their shape and any possible smell to dissipate.

My favorite things about Helix Midnight Elite Mattress
The Helix Midnight Elite looks and feels like a high-end mattress. I love how luxuriously plush and super supportive it is, especially with its thick 16-inch profile. Its fantastic support system checks a lot of boxes for couples and side, back, and combination sleepers. I’d also recommend this mattress for its cooling features, including a cooling cover, which makes it a great match for hot sleepers or those in hot regions.
My Helix Midnight Elite Mattress Complaints
A luxury mattress is going to come at a luxury price tag. Starting at more than $2,200 at full retail for a twin size mattress, this mattress is not for budget shoppers at all. However, if you like the feel of this bed and are OK with less features, you may like the standard Helix Midnight or Helix Midnight Luxe mattress. We also recommend using our coupons throughout this review to get a better deal. Stomach sleepers should probably look elsewhere, too, since the Midnight Elite will probably feel too soft and not supportive enough for their needs. Lastly, some people may not like how tall its profile is, especially seniors or people with mobility issues.
