Construction

When I first took a look at the 4Sleep mattress it seemed that they were hoping for both the feel of memory foam with a little more “bounce” than is to be expected out of a foam mattress (we’ll see if they pulled it off later in the review). First, let’s get an idea of what makes up the 4Sleep mattress:

Cover– The 4Sleep Cooling On Demand cover is made of polyester, viscose, and Lycra. This composition allows for a breathable cover to avoid trapping heat in the mattress. It’s pretty thin, meaning you get to directly engage with the memory foam layer underneath it.

4Sleep Mattress Cover
Close-up on the 4Sleep mattress cover

Top Layer– The top layer is 1.5” of gel memory foam with a density of 3.5 pounds. It is a soft top layer that does a nice job of conforming to the shape of your body as you lie on it. This is also the most important layer for pressure relief, which I take a deeper dive into later in this review.

This layer is also important to the breathability and cooling of the mattress. They use gel memory foam (combined with the breathable cover) to make the mattress sleep as cool as possible.

Second And Third Layer– Below the memory foam layer there is 1.5” of polyurethane foam with a density of 3 pounds followed by 1” of foam with a 3 pound density. These layers give the mattress some of the bounce 4Sleep is going for and more response than a mattress with only memory foam in the comfort layer. Combined with the top layer, the support layers give good pressure relief while also providing some bounce so you don’t feel “stuck.”

Base Layer– The final base layer is 7” of 2 pound density foam that acts as the base for the “comfort” layers and adds support for the sleeper as well as durability to the mattress itself. The density of this material is actually higher than the average base layer found in foam mattresses, making the mattress potentially more durable.

Edge Support Layer– 4Sleep mattresses also include a 2.5” edge support layer. This is designed to allow sleepers to roll to the end of the bed without worry of collapsing the mattress. This is beneficial if you plan on using the full surface area of the mattress.

Firmness

People of different body types and shapes will feel firmness differently. Rather than giving just my opinion on the overall firmness level, I enlisted three other people to give their opinion as well. This will give you a better sense of the firmness range you can expect.

4SLEEP Firmness Graph
Firmness rating of 4 testers

As you can see by the ratings on the chart above, the 4Sleep mattress has a medium firmness to it. I don’t think many people will think it’s overly soft or overly firm. The memory foam layer on top creates an initial soft feel and forms to the body as you lay on the mattress.

Once through this initial soft layer there is increased firmness in the second and third foam layers below. These transition layers allow the mattress to ease the sleeper into the base layer of the mattress for support.

Pressure Map

To give a visual representation of where someone may feel pressure points while lying on a 4Sleep mattress, I placed a pressure map on top of the mattress and lied on my back, side, and stomach. On the image below pressure will be represented from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).

4Sleep Mattress Pressure Map
Showing the pressure points on the 4Sleep when laying on my back, side, and stomach.

When lying on my back I didn’t feel any specific pressure points, and the map shows that with most of my back in the blue low pressure range. If you’re a back sleeper, it’s good to see the memory foam top layer really distribute the weight evenly across the surface of the mattress.

It is very common to feel pressure on your hip and shoulder when on your side, as there is an increased amount of weight over a smaller surface area as opposed to lying flat on your back and distributing that weight more evenly. The 4Sleep performs pretty well in the side sleeping position on the pressure map, and as you can see, it keeps the pressure light at the hip and shoulder areas.

Lastly, I moved to my stomach to check for any pressure points that may show up on the map. Again the 4Sleep did a good job of evenly distributing my weight across the mattress. There is low pressure on the ribs, which is good, as higher pressure in that area can make it difficult to breath.

Motion Transfer Test

This next test is helpful in showing the intensity of motion that is detectable from one side of the mattress to the other by simulating what it will feel like if you are sharing the mattress with a partner. It’s a measure of how much you will feel when the other person gets into and out of bed or tosses and turns during the night.

For this test I dropped a 10-pound steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches, and 12 inches and measured the disturbance on the other side of the mattress. This should be pretty intuitive: the bigger the lines, the bigger the disturbance.

4Sleep Mattress Motion Isolation Test
Showing the motion transfer experienced from 3 ball drops

The 4Sleep mattress performs well on the motion transfer test where the readings show a small reaction when the ball was dropped from 4 inches as well as good reactions when dropped from 8 and 12 inches. I expected this because of the use of a memory foam top layer, which tends to perform well on motion transfer tests.

Sinkage Test

In order to get a good idea of how someone might sink into a mattress, I use four balls of varying sizes and densities (a 6-pound medicine ball, an 8-pound medicine ball, a 10-pound steel ball, and a 50-pound medicine ball) and place them on the mattress to measure how much they compress the surface.

4Sleep Sinkage Test
Sinkage test with 6 pounds, 8 pounds, 10 pounds and 50 pounds balls

These different sizes, weights, and densities help to imitate different body parts or different sized people to show how far into a mattress you may sink.

  • With the 6-pound medicine ball we see about one inch of sinkage.
  • With the 8-pound medicine ball we again see about one inch of sinkage.
  • The 10-pound steel ball causes two inches of sinkage.
  • The 50-pound medicine ball sinks into the mattress approximately four inches.

Edge Support Test

Foam mattresses tend to have weaker edge support than many innerspring mattresses, and 4Sleep had that in mind when they added the side edge support section of the mattress.

The goal is to mimic the edge of an innerspring mattress, allowing you to use the entire surface area of the mattress and not feel like you will roll off when sleeping near the side edge. While lying near the edge, I didn’t feel the mattress collapse, and the support seemed uniform with other portions of the mattress. This bodes well if you plan on sharing the mattress with a partner and value a little extra sleeping space.

Sitting on the side of the bed does cause some compression as shown below, but that is to be expected with foam mattresses. Overall the 4Sleep has above average edge support for a foam mattress.

Is the 4Sleep right for you?

Now that we’ve taken a deep dive into the 4Sleep mattress, it’s time for the most important question: Would the 4Sleep be a good fit for you? I think the 4Sleep would be a good choice if you are:

  • Looking For a Mattress with Medium Firmness – If you don’t want a mattress that is overly soft or might feel too firm, 4Sleep is a good potential match. The 4Sleep does a good job of giving you the soft memory foam feel without sacrificing the support of the firmer layers beneath.
  • Want the Pressure Relief Without Sinking in Too Much – The 4Sleep combines memory foam with two responsive polyfoam layers. The result is good pressure relief with a bit more bounce so you don’t feel like you’re getting stuck in the mattress.
  • Want a More Breathable Foam Mattress – The mattress does a good job of cooling for a foam mattress.
  • Really Value Edge Support – 4Sleep is definitely above average in terms of edge support for those who are looking at foam mattresses. If you share a bed this can be very important to you, and 4Sleep definitely deserves a strong look thanks to the extra edge support system they have included.

The 4Sleep mattress has combined a retro cover design with advanced memory foam to create one of the more unique mattresses available online. At a 7 out of 10 on the firmness scale, the 4Sleep mattress has a moderately firm feel with pronounced contouring support. A breathable cover and gel memory foam help to dissipate heat, keeping the sleeper cool.
