Earlier this year Brentwood Home decided to revamp their mattress line and add a total of 9 new mattresses. Within this revamp, Brentwood’s 9 new mattresses broke down into 3 categories; memory foam mattresses, latex mattresses, and hybrid mattresses. This week at Sleepopolis we decided to dive into their new line of hybrid mattresses.
For starters, we’ll be taking a look at the Avalon mattress. The Avalon is the least expensive of the new hybrid collection, so with that said let’s get this party started!

The Brentwood Avalon is a firm hybrid mattress that uses a mix of pocketed coils and polyfoam for a firm feel.
Construction
Layers
The Brentwood Home Avalon mattress is constructed from 2 separate layers of foam and pocketed springs. These layers come together for a total height of 10″.
- Top layer (comfort) – 2″ of polyurethane foam. The top layer of this mattress works to provide the sleeper with the initial level of contour, comfort, and cooling.
- Bottom layer (support & foundation) – 8″ of individually wrapped coils. This layer of 1,130 individually wrapped coils is designed to provide the support, deep compression support, and foundational base for the mattress as a whole. Additionally, this bottom layer is broken down into 5-zones, which provide more support where you need it and less where you don’t.
Cover
The cover of the Avalon mattress is similar to Brentwood Home’s newer memory foam mattress line, containing a mix of polyester and wool. Additionally, the top portion of the cover embodies a traditional quilted design. Atypical to most quilted covers, this one is quite thin. This allows the cover to add a degree of pressure relief without creating the deeper more enveloped level of sinkage and hug. The side panels of the Avalon’s cover are sturdier than the top piece of fabric, which gives me confidence that the mattress will be protected during any moves.
From an aesthetic standpoint, the cover is simple, but nice. The white top piece of fabric has a smooth transition into the all blue side panels, which wrap the perimeter of the mattress.
Firmness, Feel, & Support
The Brentwood Home Avalon mattress has a firm feel, landing at an 8 out of 10 on the firmness scale, where 10 is the most firm. While Brentwood Home does make mattresses of all firmness levels, this specific model was created to meet the needs of those sleepers who enjoy a firmer feel.
For starters, the feel of this mattress is indeed quite firm. As a result, you need to be a sleeper who really enjoys more of a floating, firm, and highly supportive feel. The floating feel of this mattress is certainly not for everyone, but for those sleepers looking to avoid any sort of trapped or stuck feeling, this mattress could be a good option.
The quilted cover does add a small degree of pressure relief, however, it is fairly minor with respect to the quite firm foam and support coils.
GUIDE: How to choose a mattress?
With this firmer feel comes excellent support. Personally, I tend to enjoy more of a medium feel. Yet, the support of this mattress was quite impressive. The push back I received while sleeping on my stomach resulted in great spinal alignment. The same case can be made while sleeping on my back.
That said, sleeping on my side did not last very long. With the firmer feel and low level of sinkage / give, sleeping on my side led to pressure points that I simply could not sleep on. As noted before, I’m not necessarily a fan of firmer mattresses, but I do believe sleepers, especially heavier sleepers, who enjoy the firmer feel may find the Avalon to be a good fit. Even so, very few side sleepers will find the Avalon comfortable, in my opinion.
A large part of the balanced support this mattress provides comes from the zoned construction used in the bottom layer of pocketed coils. With 5 separate support zones, the Avalon is able to react to certain weights and pressures, providing more support where your body needs it and less where it doesn’t.
As we move on, edge support was one of my favorite attributes about the Avalon. The firmer feel combined with the pocketed coils created a level of edge support that competes with some of the top hybrid mattresses in the industry. With just a 10″ construction, I was rather surprised to find that the edges were as strong as they are. These stronger edges are great for daily activities (watching TV, getting dressed, etc.) as well as amorous activities.
Going hand-in-hand with the impressive edges is the bounce this mattress provides. As expected, the coil base is extremely responsive. This makes for a nice level of bounce that can also improve amorous activities. With more bounce, you have to work less, allowing for a more enjoyable time with your partner. For those couples that enjoy the firmer feel and want to spice things up in the bedroom, the Avalon should not be overlooked.
Finally, cooling. With a thin layer of foam on top of an 8″ pocketed coil base, this mattress has no issues breathing. Therefore, the sleeping surface of the Avalon is able to remain cooler. By adding a thinner quilted cover, Brentwood capped off the cooling capabilities of the Avalon.
All things considered, the Avalon is a fine mattress. While I may not be a fan of the firmness level, I do believe the overall support, bounce, cooling, and edge support are top notch. For those sleepers who are looking for that 8 out of 10 firmness level (10 being the most firm), a floating feel, and a hybrid design, the Avalon could be an excellent choice.
Sinkage Tests
All mattress reviews on Sleepopolis go through the following sinkage tests. These tests are deigned to provide you with insight on how the mattress will perform under various conditions.
- Lying on back – while lying normally on my back with all of my weight spread evenly across the mattress, I saw 2″ of sinkage.
- Lying on side – as I rolled over onto my side, I saw 2.5″ of sinkage.
- Sitting on edge (conservative) – as I sat on the edge with my butt slightly further back on the mattress, I saw 3″ of sinkage.
- Sitting on edge (aggressive) – once I moved to the absolute edge of the mattress (still in a normal sitting position), I saw 3.5″ of sinkage.
- Standing in the middle – as I stood in the middle of the mattress with all of my weight focused on one point, I saw 4.5″ of sinkage.
Keep in mind, sinkage results may vary based on body weight and body type. As a reference point, I weigh 140 pounds.

Should I buy the Avalon mattress?
I would recommend the Avalon mattress to sleepers who:
- Want a firm mattress – the Avalon mattress comes in at an 8 out of 10 on the firmness scale, where 10 is the most firm.
- Want a hybrid mattress – with a hybrid design, this mattress will provide more bounce, faster response times, strong edges, very good support, and less of a dramatic hug.
- Want a cooler mattress – once again, the hybrid design will assist in maintaining a cooler sleeping surface. With only 2″ of comfort foam on top of 8″ of pocketed coils, the mattress is able to breathe quite easily. Additionally, the cover of this mattress is fairly thin, allowing for improved airflow in and out of the mattress.

Brentwood Home Avalon Mattress
The Brentwood Home Avalon mattress is a firm hybrid mattress. With a thin quilted cover and 2″ layer of poly foam on top it does provide a certain degree of pressure relief and minor sinkage, however, there is a strong push-back and supportive feel from the pocketed coils below. The design results in excellent edge support, bounce, response, and overall support. It can be a good choice for some stomach and back sleepers (provided you like the firmness), but for most side sleepers will not create enough contour to adequately alleviate pressure points.
