The Ice Hybrid mattress comes from the minds of Gravity, the company made famous by its eponymous weighted blanket, the Gravity Blanket. The brand has developed a robust line of blankets and duvet covers, and the Ice Hybrid marks its first foray onto the bed-in-a-box mattress scene.
While we won’t be exploring any of these other products in this guide, you can always take a gander at our full review of the Gravity weighted blanket. But for now, let’s turn our attention back to the Ice Hybrid mattress!
What is the Gravity Ice Hybrid Mattress Made Of?
The Gravity Ice Hybrid features a dynamic, five-layer construction of memory foam, poly foam, and pocketed coils. This designates it as a hybrid mattress, a category that includes any models built with both foam and coil layers. But what’s perhaps most interesting about this particular mattress is that it’s imbued with a ton of cooling tech, which could be a great thing for hot sleepers.
To see how all of these materials come together, let’s go through the mattress layer by layer.
Cover – The mattress is encased with a cool-to-the-touch Phase Change Material cover. And when I say cool-to-the-touch, I’m not joking — as you press into the slick material, you’ll immediately notice a cooling sensation.
Comfort – To double-down on the cooling of the Phase Change Material cover, Gravity has slipped in a top layer of gel-infused memory foam. This material has a slow response to pressure, providing plenty of space for sleepers to sink in for contouring relief at the shoulders, hips, and lower back. While this sinkage would normally produce a ton of overheating, a cooling gel infusion helps to dissipate any body heat trapped in the foam.
Contour – Underneath the top layer of gel-infused memory foam, you’ll land on yet another section of memory foam, which works to extend the contouring of the top layer even deeper into the structure. This could be an excellent feature for side sleepers as it provides even more space to sink in for pressure relief at the shoulders and hips.
Transition – To balance out some of this sinkage, Gravity has placed a transitional layer of high-density poly foam underneath the thick top sections of memory foam. This material has a firm feel, which should help to ease the sleeper into the firmer base below.
Support – The major support system of the mattress is found in this 6” layer of pocketed coils. This coil system brings some bounce, support, and firmness to the overall structure, helping to curb the deep contouring and sinkage of the memory foam layers. These coils are also wrapped in a section of high-density poly foam, which strengthens the edge support of the mattress. We’ll go into this a little later on, but sound edge support is especially important for couples as it maximizes the usable surface area of the bed.
Base – Wrapping things up is a 2” section of high-density poly foam. This material is really just here to give the coils above it something off of which to bounce and react.
How Does the Gravity Ice Hybrid Mattress Feel?
Now that we’ve got the construction specs all sorted out, it’s time for us to discuss how this mattress feels. To start the conversation, I’d like to take a look at its firmness.
But before we do that, I want to take a moment to acknowledge the subjective nature of firmness. As with any feel factor, it can change a lot depending on one’s body size, shape, and weight, so my personal read of the mattress could very well differ from your own. For reference, I’m 5’10”, weight around 190 lbs., and prefer to sleep on my stomach.
After stretching out on the Gravity Ice Hybrid mattress, I decided to give it a 6/10 on the firmness scale, where 1 is the softest and 10 is the firmest. When compared to the industry standard of 6.5 for medium firmness, it’s clear that this bed is on the softer side of things.
To be honest, I was a little surprised by how soft this mattress is! Hybrid mattresses are usually quite firm, thanks to their interior sections of pocketed coils or springs, which bring a ton of lift and support to the structure. But here, the thick layers of memory foam up top really set the tone for the entire bed, a tone that is gentle, cuddly, and deeply pressure-relieving. For that reason, I think strict side sleepers could be particularly well suited to this mattress. We’ll go over this more below, but these folks tend to prefer softer beds that provide plenty of space to sink in for relief at the shoulders and hips.
While side sleepers may find a lot to love in the Gravity Ice Hybrid, back and stomach sleepers will likely find that this bed is a touch too soft for their needs. These two groups of sleepers need a little more support at the hips and lower back to ensure a proper spinal alignment.

Testing the Gravity Ice Hybrid Mattress
Though firmness is definitely an important measure, it’s not the only factor to consider when shopping for a new bed. So, let’s test out the Gravity Ice Hybrid for a few more attributes, namely pressure relief, motion transfer, and edge support.
Pressure Relief
Pressure relief is a term that refers to how well a mattress is able to alleviate tension at sensitive spots like the shoulders, hips, and lower back. While most people will benefit from sound pressure relief, those who struggle with things like fibromyalgia, joint pain, or arthritis, will want to be extra aware of how pressure-relieving their mattress is.
To analyze the Gravity Ice Hybrid’s pressure relief, I used a pressure map. This handy device captures the amount of force exerted on the structure, which allows me to map out areas of low and high pressure. To read the map, all you have to know is that green indicates areas of low pressure and red indicates areas of high pressure.
Back – Sleeping on my back was actually pretty comfortable! The top layers of memory foam do an excellent job at filling in the space at the lumbar region, providing plenty of relief to this area. I will say, though, that the deep sinkage from these layers did make it a little difficult to move around and change positions. So, if you switch between your back and another position in the night, this may not be a great mattress for you.
Side – As I mentioned in the firmness section, this bed is built for side sleepers. When I turned onto my side, I could feel the layers of memory foam contouring to my shoulders and hips, which greatly alleviate tension in these areas. Overall, I think this mattress is a real winner for those who doze on their sides.
Stomach – Though the Gravity Ice Hybrid may be great for side sleeping, I wouldn’t recommend it for stomach sleeping. Stomach sleepers tend to need a firm mattress that lifts the hips in line with the shoulders to prevent bowing at the lower back. On the Gravity Ice Hybrid, I could feel my hips sinking out of line with my shoulders, resulting in some discomfort along my spine.
Motion Transfer
Next up, let’s take a look at this bed’s motion transfer. This measure refers to how much movement is detectable from one side of the mattress to the other. Basically, this test will tell you whether or not you’re likely to be disturbed by your bed mate’s movements in the night.
To illustrate this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 lb. steel ball from heights of 4 inches, Eight inches and 12 inches and measured the disturbance it caused: the bigger the lines, the bigger the disturbance.
These are excellent motion transfer results, which tells me you shouldn’t be too bothered by your partner’s tossing and turning. Because memory foam is such a dense material, it does a great job of absorbing and dissipating motion evenly across the structure. Couples should definitely give this mattress a look!
Edge Support
And for our final test, let’s talk edge support. We discussed this briefly in the construction section of this review, but this measure is all about how well-supported the sides of a bed are. This can be important for couples looking to maximize the usable surface area of their mattress or simply for those who like to sit on the edge of the bed to tie their shoes or get ready in the morning.
In my opinion, the Gravity Ice Hybrid mattress has pretty good edge support. Remember, there’s a special layer of high-density poly foam wrapped around the coils in this bed, which helps to reinforce the sides. If edge support is a major consideration for you, I think you’ll be well-pleased by the edge support on this mattress.

Should You Buy the Gravity Ice Hybrid Mattress?
The Gravity Ice Hybrid mattress combines top layers of gel-infused memory foam with pocketed coils for a nice balance of pressure relief and support. The mattress also features a cool-to-the-touch Phase Change Material cover, which helps to keep temperatures low.
Gravity Ice Hybrid Pros
- Perhaps my favorite feature of the Gravity Ice Hybrid is that it’s a cooling mattress. From the icy cold Phase Change Material cover to the gel-infused memory foam comfort layer, this bed could be a great fit for those who tend to overheat at night.
- I think it could also work well for side sleepers who generally need a soft mattress for deep pressure relief at the shoulders, hips, and lower back. Compared to other hybrid mattresses on the market, this one is certainly on the softer side of things.
- And finally, this bed did super well on my motion transfer test, which means couples shouldn’t be too bothered by their partner’s movements in the night.
Gravity Ice Hybrid Cons
- In my opinion, this mattress is too soft for stomach sleepers. These folks typically need a firm structure to help lift the hips in line with the shoulders.
- Though hybrid mattresses are typically quite bouncy, I was actually kind of disappointed by the lack of bounce on the Gravity Ice Hybrid (thanks in large part to the thick top layers of foam). So, if you’re looking for a buoyant bed, you may want to look elsewhere!
