I’ll be sharing my WinkBed mattress review, where I take a deep dive into this bed and recommend who it might be a good fit for. Thanks to its plush pillow top and ultra-supportive coils, the WinkBed has become a well-known luxury hybrid mattress.

The brand’s flagship mattress comes in four different models, each with a different firmness: Softer, Luxury Firm, Firmer, and Plus. That means there should be a WinkBed mattress that works for everyone. The Luxury Firm is the most popular model, whereas the Plus model is a tad more expensive and is specifically designed for people with larger body types.
For this review, I tested out the WinkBed Luxury Firm model, and found it to have a responsive and supportive feel, similar to a traditional innerspring mattress.
I should also note that the WinkBed is a bed-in-a-box, so it will need a few hours for off-gassing and decompression after you open it. Any off-gassing smell should dissipate within about 24 hours, and is nothing to be concerned about. Finally, keep in mind that you might want to have a friend help you unbox this bed, as it can be pretty heavy.

WinkBed Mattress Firmness
Since the way a mattress feels will vary depending on your body weight and preferred sleeping position, I had some colleagues help me rate the WinkBed’s firmness. We each took a turn lying on the mattress and gave it a personal rating. I then averaged our ratings on the graph below.
Our team of testers gave this bed a 7 out of 10 on the mattress firmness scale. The industry standard for medium-firmness is a 6.5 out of 10, so this mattress is just a touch firmer than medium firm. When I first laid down on this bed, I felt some initial sinkage around my hips and lower back. But I did feel some pressure relief, thanks to its quilted Tencel mattress cover.
The coils also do a great job of supporting your back while you sleep, while offering lighter pressure in other areas at the same time.
After sinking through the cover I felt firm, bouncy support from its pocketed supportive coil system. I definitely felt more “on top of” than “in” this mattress — something combination sleepers should appreciate. This will help them switch between positions easily during the night. If you’re looking for a high-density responsive bed that has a firm support system, the WinkBed is an excellent option for you.

In the below section, you’ll find information on how the WinkBed performs for several different sleeper types.
We recognize that people come in all shapes and sizes, and people of every size deserve a mattress that works for their body type. We use the weight categories light, average, and heavy to more easily categorize sleepers based on how mattresses will perform for their body type, as most mattresses are designed for the group we call “average” (130 to 250 pounds).
As a general rule, lighter sleepers don’t require as much support as average weight sleepers, and mattresses will tend to feel firmer to them. On the other hand, heavy sleepers tend to need more support than average weight sleepers and tend to sink into the mattress more.
As far as sleeping positions go, side sleepers tend to need a softer mattress while stomach sleepers usually need a firmer, more supportive one. Back sleepers are usually somewhere in the middle.
Is the WinkBed a Good Mattress for Light Sleepers (Under 130 pounds)?
- Light Back Sleepers – If you’re a lightweight back sleeper who likes to feel “on top of” your mattress, you should like the WinkBed, which should feel firm and supportive in this position.
- Light Side Sleepers – I personally think that this mattress will be too firm for lightweight side sleepers. Even though this is a pillow top mattress that does offer a good amount of pressure relief, it doesn’t offer much contouring which side sleepers tend to prefer if they have sensitive joints. I would suggest that these sleepers check out the Softer model of this bed.
- Light Stomach Sleepers – These sleepers will do well on the WinkBed, which is supportive enough to keep their hips lifted up in line with their shoulders.
Is the WinkBed a Good Mattress for Average Weight Sleepers (130–250 pounds)?
- Average Weight Back Sleepers – The WinkBed is a natural fit for these sleepers. It should offer plenty of support, and make them feel lifted up and out of bed. This mattress also does a great job at keeping the spine aligned for back sleepers.
- Average Weight Side Sleepers – These sleepers will likely find this bed a bit too firm, so I’d recommend they opt for the Softer WinkBed model.
- Average Weight Stomach Sleepers – This bed could work well for stomach sleepers. However, if you’re a stomach sleeper looking for an extra-firm mattress, you might want to opt for the Firm model. But either way, your hips should stay aligned with your shoulders.
Is the WinkBed a Good Mattress for Heavy Sleepers (over 250 pounds)?
- Heavy Back Sleepers – The WinkBed is a solid choice for heavy back sleepers. It offers firm support that should keep them supported throughout the night. This bed also feels quite durable, which tells me that it should last a long time. In fact, it often makes our best mattresses that won’t sag list.
- Heavy Side Sleepers – These sleepers might find this bed just a little too firm to get the pressure relief they need. I have not personally tested the Softer model of the WinkBed, so I can’t say whether or not it will be supportive enough for heavier folks, but it might be worth a try. WinkBeds does offer a sleep trial, so it could be worth checking this mattress out.
- Heavy Stomach Sleepers – If you’re a heavy stomach sleeper, I’d opt for the Firm model of the WinkBed to ensure you get enough support, or check out the WinkBed Plus mattress, which was designed specifically for heavy folks.
WinkBeds Mattress Performance
A big part of what our team does here at Sleepopolis is run a series of tests on each mattress we review. This helps our team of Certified Sleep Science Coaches get an objective view of what it would be like to sleep on the bed. These tests also allow us to make even more specific recommendations, in addition to sleeping position and body type. Below, see how the WinkBed performs in areas such as pain relief, motion transfer, cooling, and more.
WinkBed Mattress Pain Relief Performance
Pressure relief is a measure of how a bed will feel against various pressure points on your body while you sleep, and it’s an effective way to measure how well a mattress will relieve pain.
To measure the WinkBed’s pressure relief, I placed a pressure map on top of the mattress and tested out a few different sleeping positions. The map records the pressure points the mattress created, then shows the results in a graphic created by thermal imaging. You’ll see low pressure areas recorded in blue to green and high pressure areas recorded in yellow to red. We cover three different areas: back pain, shoulder pain, and hip pain.
Before looking at the results below, you’ll definitely want to take your sleeping position into account. For example, I don’t recommend the Luxury Firm model of the WinkBed to side sleepers. So if you’re a side sleeper with back pain, you’ll probably still want to avoid this model, despite it performing well in back pain relief (the Softer model could be a good alternative). In short, consider your sleeping position first, then look at our pressure map results.
As you’ll see above, the WinkBed is an especially good fit for sleepers with back pain, with the map almost entirely blue. This indicates low pressure and even weight distribution, which is essential for avoiding soreness in the upper or lower back. Back sleepers, in particular, should feel their body lifted and their spine neutrally aligned.
In the side-sleeping position, there was a touch of pressure at the shoulders (though not too much), and some higher pressure at the hips. If you experience pain in either of these areas or just have more sensitive joints, consider the Softer model.
Motion Transfer
If you’ve ever shared a bed with a partner or a pet, you know how important motion transfer can be in a mattress. Motion transfer is the amount of movement that travels through the mattress when it’s touched or disturbed.
We come up with our motion-transfer score using a few different tests. The first one is simple: we just lie down on the mattress with a colleague, roll around, and see how much of each other’s movement we feel. We also place a full wine glass on the mattress, and see how much the wine moves around with us. If the liquid has zero to little movement, then it’s a safe bet that the mattress has low motion transfer, which is what you want to see. Finally, we conduct a seismometer test.
Human Test
While rolling around with a colleague and going through motions such as getting in and out of bed, I didn’t feel a ton of movement on the mattress.
Wine Test
Our red wine test is an easy visual indicator to see how well the WinkBed isolates motion. I put a glass of red wine on one side of the bed, then rolled around on the other side to see how my movement affected the liquid. During the test, there was a decent amount of movement in the glass, meaning that the wine was impacted by me moving around on the mattress. It’s not a bad result; just something I do want to note.
Seismometer Test
Finally, there’s our seismometer test. This involves dropping a 10 pound steel ball from heights of four inches, eight inches and 12 inches, then measuring the disturbance it causes: the bigger the lines on the graph, the bigger the disturbance and the higher the motion transfer.
I was pleasantly surprised by the WinkBed’s motion transfer results. Based on its innerspring construction, I didn’t expect it to feature any motion isolation at all. This mattress is also not overly bouncy compared to other innerspring mattresses that I’ve tested in the past. But, as you can see above, the WinkBed did a wonderful job isolating smaller disturbances, most likely due to its foam layer and cushy pillow top. That means you’re unlikely to feel disturbed by a partner tossing and turning at night on the WinkBed. I would say this bed does a decent job at isolating motion at the source.
Responsiveness
We test each mattress’s responsiveness by pressing down on its top layer, removing our hand, and seeing how quickly the surface returns to its original shape. Memory foam usually has a low response to pressure, while hybrid mattresses with coils (such as the WinkBed) tend to have a high response to pressure. Responsive mattresses are usually good for sex since they make it easy to change positions and move around. These traits also make them good for combination sleepers who switch sleeping positions at night.
While I wasn’t surprised by the WinkBed’s high responsiveness, it’s hard to find a responsive mattress that also features low motion transfer. Even though this is a hybrid innerspring mattress, this bed isn’t as bouncy or springy compared to other mattresses I’ve tried that are made with coils.
This makes the WinkBed an especially good mattress for couples — responsive enough of sex, but able to isolate motion so they don’t feel each other tossing and turning. If you are looking for a super-bouncy bed, then I suggest checking out the Saatva Classic.
Cooling
Several factors contribute to a mattress’s cooling ability. First and foremost, we consider its construction. Since the WinkBed has an extra-tall layer of pocketed coils, there’s plenty of room for air to flow through the mattress and keep it cool. Further temperature regulation comes from the naturally cooling Tencel cover and the gel infusion in the foam.
We also test out each mattress with a device called a thermal gun, which uses color-coded imaging to measure how much and how quickly a mattress heats up when we lie down on it. If it heats up more than 15 degrees Fahrenheit, we consider it to have poor cooling capabilities. 10 to 15 degrees indicates decent cooling, 5 to 10 degrees indicates good cooling, and less than 5 degrees indicates excellent cooling.
After five minutes of lying on the WinkBed, it only increased by 7 degrees, which is a pretty good result. This indicates that the WinkBed offers good temperature regulation. That said, the moisture-wicking Tencel cover feels very breathable and airy when you rest on it. However, I didn’t think this mattress felt cool to the touch.
Keep in mind that several outside factors can affect cooling, including the temperature of your bedroom, how close your bed is to an air vent or window, and your body’s own temperature, which can vary from person to person. Also, your body temperature drops when you sleep, so chances are that the WinkBed will have a lower temperature in your home at night.
Even though this mattress offers good cooling, you can find more picks on our best cooling mattresses page if you’re an especially hot sleeper.
Edge Support
Edge support is a measure of whether or not you can lie all the way on the side of your mattress and still feel supported. This also tells us if you can sit on the edge of your mattress without feeling like you are going to fall off. This should be an appealing feature for couples who like to spread out, heavier people who want to avoid premature sagging, people with mobility issues who need additional support coming in and out of bed, or anyone who loves to use the entire surface of their bed.
At first, the reinforced edges of the WinkBed seemed like a mixed bag. When sitting on the mattress, it only sunk a tiny bit, so I felt stable. But when I laid all the way at the edge of the mattress, I felt like I was going to slip off.
To get a more concrete read on the mattress’s edge support, I pulled out a tape measure. I measured the bed before I sat on the edge, then measured it again while I was sitting on the edge. The bed’s top layer only sunk less than half of an inch. When taking this into consideration, I think the WinkBed offers strong edge support. That means this mattress could be a decent option for those with mobility issues, as well as couples.
WinkBed Mattress Performance For Couples
When deciding on the best mattresses for couples, we look at several of the above testing categories, including edge support, motion transfer test results, responsiveness, and cooling. The WinkBed excels in all of these areas. Its strong edge support easily accommodates two bodies, the low motion transfer keeps you from feeling your partner’s movements, it’s highly responsive for sex, and its construction should help both of you stay cool. I found the WinkBed to be a solid 7 out of 10 on the firmness scale, or a little firmer than the industry standard. A mattress with this firmness should offer a balanced feel that can withstand regular use without losing its supportive characteristics. The reinforced edges also provide excellent edge support, allowing users to sit or lie near the perimeter without experiencing significant sagging—a common issue in lower-quality mattresses.
Given its construction and generous lifetime warranty, I predict the WinkBed will deliver consistent performance over the years. After a hands-on experience, I think this mattress will feel as good as new after the first thirty days, and I expect minimal signs of wear and tear even by the three-year mark. Looking ahead to the ten-year mark, while some natural aging is inevitable, I believe the WinkBed will maintain its structural integrity and remain competitive against other options.

My Final Thoughts about the WinkBeds Mattress
That brings me to the end of my WinkBed breakdown. Below, I’ll compare this mattress to a few other mattress brands and a few other WinkBeds models. But before that, let’s revisit who might be the best fit for this bed, and who should keep searching.
Who I Recommend the WinkBed Mattress For
- Back sleepers and stomach sleepers should get the support they need from this luxury hybrid mattress.
- Combo sleepers rejoice. This bouncy bed should allow you to switch sleeping positions with ease, but it still offers some cushion at your pressure points.
- If you like the feel of a traditional innerspring mattress, the WinkBed could work for you. It’s actually one of the best mattresses for seniors because it has a traditional, supportive feel. Since this bed offered great pressure relief around my lumbar region, I’d also recommend it to folks who suffer from lower back pain.
- Couples should find everything they need in the WinkBed, including cooling, responsiveness for sex, exceptional motion isolation, and plenty of edge support.
Who I Don’t Recommend the WinkBed Mattress For
- Strict side sleepers who need a super-plush feel might find the Luxury Firm WinkBed too firm and too harsh on their joints. I’d recommend they consider the Softer firmness option or take a look at some of our best mattresses for side sleepers.
- The WinkBed’s sturdy support structure and coil layers mean this bed doesn’t provide as much contouring or sinkage as a memory foam mattress. Anyone looking for a slow-moving feel might want to check out our best memory foam mattresses.
- Even though this bed did well in our cooling test, I suggest that if you tend to overheat at night you look for a mattress more specific cooling properties.
- Budget shoppers might want to opt for a cheaper mattress. However, the WinkBed is often on sale and its durable construction makes it one of the best mattresses for the money on the online mattress market.

How does the WinkBed ship?
The WinkBed will ship for free and arrive compressed in a box. You should allow a few hours for off-gassing and decompression after you unbox your new mattress.
Does the WinkBed come with a mattress warranty?
Yes, all WinkBeds mattresses are covered by a lifetime warranty. If you’re replacing your old WinkBed for a reason not covered under the warranty, WinkBeds will give you 50 percent off a new WinkBed of the same size.
Where are WinkBeds mattresses made?

Does the WinkBed need a box spring?
No, you don’t need a box spring with this bed, any hard flat surface will work to support it. You can also use a slatted bed frame or adjustable base. Any frame you use does need to include a rigid center support.
Can I test out a WinkBed in person?

WinkBed vs Saatva
The Saatva is an innerspring mattress that also comes in several different models. Like the WinkBed, it has a Luxury Firm model that we found to be supportive, responsive, and cooling. However, the hybrid WinkBed has a thicker layer of foam and is a bed-in-a-box mattress, while the Saatva comes uncompressed. Their delivery staff will even set it up for you, free of charge.
- Price: Both the WinkBed and Saatva are luxury mattresses and are on the pricier end, although the WinkBed is a bit cheaper before discounts.
- Sleeping position: I think the Luxury Firm model of both of these mattresses is a good fit for back sleepers and stomach sleepers, but not side sleepers.
- Cooling: Both of these mattresses excel at cooling, but the Saatva might be slightly better in this area because it has two layers of coils instead of just one.
- Body weight: Due to its second layer of supportive springs, the Saatva is the better choice for heavy sleepers over 250 pounds. Both brands also have a model specifically for larger folks: the Saatva HD and the WinkBed Plus (more on the latter in a bit).

A luxury hybrid mattress, the DreamCloud also has a 7 out of 10 on our mattress firmness scale, but its cushioning foam gives it more contouring than the WinkBed — similar to what you’d find in a high-end hotel. It’s also only available in one firmness level.
- Price: While the DreamCloud is also a luxury mattress, it’s significantly cheaper than the WinkBed.
- Sleeping position: The DreamCloud is more pressure-relieving than the WinkBed, and a good fit for back sleepers, as well as combination sleepers. The WinkBed should work for these folks, too, and is going to be the better fit for stomach sleepers. We don’t recommend either mattress for strict side sleepers.
- Cooling: While the DreamCloud also sleeps cool, I’m giving the WinkBed the edge here because of its taller coils and additional cooling features such as the gel and Tencel cover.

The original WinkBed’s memory foam cousin, the GravityLux has an all-foam construction, so it’s going to feel softer and more cushioning overall. It also comes in several different firmness levels: Soft, Medium, and Firm. We tested the Firm model.
- Price: As of this writing, both mattresses are the same price before discounts.
- Sleeping position: Both mattresses are a good fit for back sleepers and stomach sleepers, but not side sleepers. The original WinkBed is probably the better fit for combo sleepers because of its responsive springs.
- Cooling: Even though the WinkBed GravityLuxy sleeps cooler than many memory foam mattresses, the original WinkBed is the safer bet because of the airflow promoted by its coils.
