Is the Tuft & Needle Mattress a Good Mattress for You?
To start off, we put each of our mattresses through something called a “Rest Test,” where we lie down on the bed for an uninterrupted 15-minute power nap. This gives us a big-picture assessment of how it performs before we get into some of our more specific tests. Here’s how my colleague Amelia felt napping on the Tuft & Needle:
“After testing the Tuft & Needle out, I felt it offered a fairly balanced feel. It definitely has a memory foam feel, allowing you to sink in a bit for some contouring. However, I didn’t find myself sinking in deeply and maintained a somewhat ‘on top of the bed’ feel. I felt comfortable lying on my back on the Tuft & Needle and fairly comfortable on my side. However, I felt it was too soft for stomach sleeping.”
Depending on factors like your preferred sleeping position, body type, and whether or not you sleep with a partner or pet, the Tuft & Needle may or may not be a good mattress for you, take a look at some of my recommendations below.
Who I recommend the Tuft & Needle mattress for:
- I think this bed could be fantastic for back sleepers. It’s highly supportive, ensuring neutral spine alignment from the shoulders all the way to the lower back.
- It also happens to sleep cool, thanks to the graphite infusion in the top layer of foam. Hot sleepers should enjoy the thermoregulating properties of this mattress.
- And lastly, the Tuft & Needle is an awesome value buy, especially for those with lower back pain or looking for a mattress for sciatica pain. Not only did it make our Best Mattress Under $1,000 list, but it packs a serious punch without breaking the bank.
Who I don’t recommend the Tuft & Needle mattress for:
- Heavier folks may find that the bed isn’t quite supportive enough for their specific needs. With a simple two-layer design, it’s not really built for folks over 250 lbs.
- Strict stomach sleepers may also find that the top layer of foam is just a little too gentle, causing their hips to sink out of alignment with their shoulders.

How Firm is the Tuft & Needle Mattress?
Does the Tuft & Needle sound like a good fit for you so far? If so, you’ll likely want to know how the Tuft & Needle actually feels to sleep on. Let’s start by talking about how firm it is.
As with all feel factors, firmness is subjective and can change depending on your size, shape, or weight. Therefore, my experience with the Tuft & Needle may be different from your own.
After taking the Tuft & Needle mattress for a spin, I gave it a 6 out of 10 on the firmness scale. When compared to the industry standard of 6.5 for medium-firm, it seems this bed is a touch on the softer side of things.
The mattress’s cover is plush and has a traditional memory foam feel. I felt my hips sink into the mattress just a bit while the rest of my body felt lifted on top of the bed. The bed features a simple design, so I wasn’t necessarily expecting it to support me as well as it did, especially at the hips and lower back. Overall, the Tuft & Needle could be great for back sleepers or those who switch positions at night.

Tuft & Needle Mattress Performance
Though important, firmness is only one aspect of a bed’s feel. To fully examine the Tuft & Needle, we’ve got to go over more factors: How it feels for sleepers of different weights, whether or not it alleviates main, and how it works for couples.
Testing the Tuft & Needle Mattress in Different Sleeping Positions
Sleepers of different weights who sleep in different positions need different amounts of support. Take a look at how this mattress works for your weight class and preferred sleeping position.
Is the Tuft & Needle a Good Mattress for Light Sleepers (Under 130 lbs)?
- Light Back Sleepers – I think light back sleepers should feel quite comfortable on this bed. They’ll feel nice and supported and will get a touch of soothing pressure relief.
- Light Side Sleepers – This mattress may feel a bit too hard for light side sleepers. These sleepers won’t get the sinkage they need at the hips and shoulders to feel comfortable on this bed.
- Light Stomach Sleepers – I think this mattress is just firm enough for light stomach sleepers. These sleepers should experience the support they need to keep their spine in a nice, straight line.
Is the Tuft & Needle a Good Mattress for Average Weight Sleepers (130 – 250 lbs)?
- Average Weight Back Sleepers – I’d recommend this as a solid bed to average weight back sleepers. These sleepers should feel their spines supported and get some pressure relief at the lower back.
- Average Weight Side Sleepers – These sleepers should be alright, especially if they like a firmer feel. However, they might not get the sinkage they need on this bed. They might consider looking for a softer mattress, like one of our best memory foam mattresses.
- Average Weight Stomach Sleepers – I don’t think this bed is supportive enough for average weight stomach sleepers, especially those on the heavier side of average. These sleepers will find that their hips sink too far into the mattress, throwing their spine out of alignment.
Is the Tuft & Needle a Good Mattress for Heavy Sleepers (over 250 lbs)?
- Heavy Back, Side, and Stomach Sleepers – The Tuft & Needle isn’t supportive enough for heavy people. I’d steer these sleepers to one of our best mattresses for heavy people.
Tuft & Needle Mattress Pain Relief Performance
When checking out a new mattress, it’s vital to assess its capacity for relieving pressure at sensitive spots like the shoulders, hips, and lower back. To demonstrate the Tuft & Needle’s ability to do just that, I’ve decided to test it out using a pressure map.
Basically, it works like this: I roll out the gizmo, hop aboard, and let the map do the rest. As I roll around, the device records how much force I’m exerting on the mattress, creating a colored “map” of the pressure. For reference, blue indicates areas of low pressure and red indicates areas of high pressure.
Back Pain – The Tuft & Needle is an amazing mattress for back pain. If you suffer from back pain, the best position to sleep on is your back, as it’s the easiest position to achieve a neutral spine alignment in. While laying on my back on this bed, I could feel the top layer of foam filling in the space at my lumbar region for some nice pressure relief and could also feel some pleasant support from the high-density poly foam base.
Shoulder Pain- Though I assumed an all-foam bed would cradle my shoulders and hips, the Tuft & Needle is unexpectedly firm. Strict side sleepers may want to opt for a softer structure for better pressure relief at the shoulders.
Hip Pain- In my opinion, the Tuft & Needle isn’t soft enough for those who suffer from hip pain. These sleepers will want a softer bed that will better cushion sensitive pressure points at the hips.
Is the Tuft & Needle a Good Mattress for Couples?
If you sleep with a partner, you’ll have different concerns than a solo sleeper. You’ll want to know things like whether or not you’ll feel your partner’s movements, whether it’s a good mattress for sex, if it holds up at the edges, and if it’s cooling. Take a look at how it performed on some of those tests below.
Motion Transfer
Motion transfer measures how much movement you’ll likely feel from one side of the bed to the other. If you sleep with a partner who tends to toss and turn throughout the night or a pet that moves around a lot, you’ll want a bed that doesn’t transfer much movement. Prioritizing low motion transfer, or what we also call good motion isolation, can ensure you sleep soundly.
Human Test
The first test is simple: we lie down on the mattress with a colleague, roll around, and see how much of each other’s movement we feel.
For a memory foam bed, the Tuft & Needle does a surprisingly good job of isolating motion at the source. Aside from when my colleague first jumped into bed, I couldn’t feel much movement from his side.
Water Test
We also place a full glass of water on the mattress and see how much the liquid moves around with us. If the water has zero to little movement, then it’s safe to say that the mattress has minimal motion transfer, which is what you want to see.
When testing the Tuft & Needle, the water didn’t move much as my colleague and I moved around and changed sleeping positions on the mattress.
Seismometer Test
Finally, we move on to the seismometer test! This test involves dropping a 10-pound steel ball from heights of four, eight, and twelve inches and measuring the disturbance it causes. Bigger lines on the graph mean bigger disturbance and higher motion transfer.
During the seismometer test, we saw a good amount of bounce while dropping the ball. Looking at the results, you can see a lot of movement on impact that travels to the other side of the bed.
Responsiveness
Responsiveness refers to how quickly a mattress returns to its original shape after applying pressure. We test each mattress’s responsiveness by pressing down on its top layer, removing our hand, and seeing how quickly the surface returns to its original shape. Memory foam usually has a low response to pressure, while hybrid mattresses with coils tend to have a high response to pressure.
I found that the Tuft & Needle had a decent amount of bounce for a memory foam bed, making it easy to switch between positions and get out of bed. However, since the mattress leans toward the thinner side, I could feel the platform beneath me slightly while moving around, which was a little uncomfortable.
Cooling
Many factors go into how cool a mattress will sleep. The materials inside the mattress largely contribute to whether it traps heat or lets it flow freely. Memory foam is generally prone to trapping heat, but due to the cooling gel and graphite in its comfort layer, the Tuft & Needle sleeps cooler.
I tested the Tuft & Needle with a thermal gun, a device that uses color-coded imaging to measure how much and how quickly a mattress heats up when someone lies down on it.
If it heats more than 15 degrees Fahrenheit, I consider it to have poor cooling capabilities. 10 to 15 degrees indicates decent cooling, 5 to 10 degrees indicates good cooling, and less than 5 degrees indicates excellent cooling.
In the case of the Tuft & Needle, the temperature only went up around 6 degrees, making it a decent choice for hot sleepers.
Don’t forget that several outside factors can influence cooling, including the temperature of your bedroom, how close your bed is to an air vent or window, and your body temperature, which varies between people.
Edge Support
I also tested the edge support on the Tuft & Needle. Edge support determines whether you can sleep on the edge of the bed without feeling the side of the mattress collapsing under your weight. Edge support can also help you assess a mattress’s durability and predict whether it may sag over time.
When sitting on the edge and corners, I observed a good amount of sinkage. However, I never felt the platform beneath me and didn’t feel as though I was slipping. While lying on the edge, I felt more supported on my back than my side.
When I measured the sinkage with a yardstick, the layers sank approximately five inches of compression when applying weight to the edge.
While not viable for those needing strong edge support, such as individuals with mobility issues, the Tuft & Needle is a solid choice for couples who use the full surface area of the bed while sleeping.
The Tuft & Needle is a surprisingly supportive all-foam mattress that back sleepers will enjoy. It’s pretty breathable, which helps it sleep cool, and comes in at an affordable price, making it ideal for budget shoppers.

What is the Tuft & Needle Mattress Made of?
Construction – The Tuft & Needle mattress features a simple, no-frills design of just two foam layers. While this may not seem like a particularly sturdy construction, the bed has a surprisingly supportive feel that works to lift the body on top of the structure. All Tuft & Needle foams are CertiPUR-US® Certified, which means they are free from harmful chemicals and pollutants.
Let’s take a peek under the cover for a closer look at these layers.
Cover – The Tuft & Needle cover is made of polyester. It has a thin feel to it, which should help promote easy air flow throughout the mattress.
Comfort Layer – Beneath the cover, you’ll land on a three-inch section of the brand’s proprietary Adaptive® foam. It’s got a quick response to pressure, resulting in good mobility and plenty of bounce. There’s also some cooling gel and graphite infused into this layer, which should work to absorb and dissipate body heat.
Base Layer – The bulk of the mattress is made up of this seven-inch foundational layer of high-density poly foam. This material is quite firm, establishing a sturdy and supportive vibe. It also features an open-cell design, which promotes extra breathability throughout the structure. One thing to note, though, is that because the mattress only has two layers, heavier folks may sink straight through the comfort layer into the super firm base, which could cause some discomfort.
Tuft & Needle Mattress Unboxing and Off-Gassing
The Tuft & Needle is a bed-in-a-box mattress, which means it will ship compressed in a box. You’ll need to unbox it at home, and should wait at least 24 hours for it to decompress and release trapped gasses before sleeping on it.
My Final Thoughts about the Tuft & Needle Mattress
And with that, we’ve made it to the end of my review! I hope I’ve helped you figure out whether the Tuft & Needle is the right mattress for you. Before you go, I’ll leave you with some of my final thoughts.
My favorite things about the Tuft & Needle mattress
The Tuft & Needle is a surprisingly supportive all-foam mattress that back sleepers will enjoy. It’s pretty breathable, which helps it sleep cool, and comes in at an affordable price.
My Tuft & Needle mattress complaints
This mattress doesn’t offer enough pressure relief for side sleepers or those who suffer from hip and/or shoulder pain. I would also say that this bed isn’t supportive enough for heavy people, who will find themselves sinking too far into this bed.

Comparing the Tuft & Needle to Other Mattresses
Now that we’ve got a solid understanding of what’s going on in the Tuft & Needle mattress, let’s size it up to some of its biggest competition in the space, namely the Casper and Nectar mattresses.
Tuft & Needle vs Casper
- Like the Original Tuft & Needle, the Casper is an all-foam mattress-in-a-box. However, it’s built with four layers of foam, making for a slightly more complex design.
- Perhaps my favorite feature of the Casper is its layer of Zoned Support. This section is built with two types of durable poly foam: a firmer one at the hips for a little lift and a softer one at the shoulders for a little cushiony sink.
- In general, I like this mattress best for back/side combo sleepers as it strikes a really nice balance between pressure relief and support.
- It’s worth noting that the Casper is quite a bit more expensive than the Tuft & Needle!

"From the delivery of the box to the magical unfolding of the king size mattress to the first time laying on the bed, all smiles here! The Casper Original is an all-foam mattress that is a great option for back sleepers who want a balance of support and pressure relief. Combination sleepers will appreciate this mattress's responsiveness, which makes it easy to change positions throughout the night.

Tuft & Needle vs Nectar
- Yet again, we see another all-foam mattress in the Nectar, though this one features thick top layers of memory foam. This makes for a gentle bed full of deep pressure relief, body contouring, and sinkage.
- That being said, the Nectar would probably work best for side sleepers. Back and stomach sleepers will likely find the bed too soft.
- Hot sleepers will also probably want to avoid the Nectar as it doesn’t sleep nearly as cool as the Tuft & Needle mattress.
- Pricewise, though, it’s comparable to the Tuft & Needle.

The original Nectar mattress is a pressure-relieving, yet supportive, bed. It’s made with a thick layer of therapeutic memory foam, which offers sleepers plenty of support and decent body contouring.

Other Models from Tuft & Needle
As I mentioned up top, Tuft & Needle sells two other mattresses in addition to the flagship model: the Mint and the Hybrid. So, let’s compare all three below!
Tuft & Needle Mint
- Like the Tuft & Needle Original mattress, the Mint is an all-foam mattress that’s as pressure-relieving as it is supportive. However, it features a three-layer design for a slightly more luxurious feel.
- Overall, the Mint mattress is much softer than the Original, making it a better fit for combo sleepers and side sleepers.
- The Mint also happens to sleep really cool, especially when compared to other all-foam models on the market.
- Learn more in my full Tuft & Needle Mint mattress review.

The Tuft & Needle Mint is an awesome budget mattress that combines high-quality materials with a low price tag. I’d highly recommend it to budget shoppers looking for a soft feel. Tuft & Needle Hybrid
- The only Tuft & Needle mattress to feature coils, the Hybrid is much bouncier and more supportive than either of the brand’s all-foam beds.
- Therefore, this hybrid mattress is best for back and/or combo sleepers, especially those who need to be able to move around with ease.
- I should also add that the Hybrid is the most expensive Tuft & Needle mattress, as it combines both premium foams with a tall system of pocketed coils.
- Learn more in my full Tuft & Needle Hybrid mattress review.

Our Review Process
At Sleepopolis, our team of Certified Sleep Science Coaches personally tests each mattress. We start by unboxing the mattress to figure out how difficult (or easy) it is to get the mattress from the box to the bed. Then, we spend time laying on the bed in different positions, taking time to assess it on our backs, stomachs, and sides. Next, we perform our Sleepopolis tests, using specialized tools to measure qualities like motion transfer, bounce, and pressure relief. Our last step is to open up the mattress and take a look at each layer. These steps allow us to give our final verdict on the mattress. Jump back to our mattress picks.

Tuft & Needle Mattress Review (2024) | Sleepopolis
The Tuft & Needle is a surprisingly supportive all-foam mattress that back sleepers will enjoy. It’s pretty breathable, which helps it sleep cool, and comes in at an affordable price, making it ideal for budget shoppers.
