Leesa vs Tempur-Pedic: Which is Better for You?

Though we’ll be exploring this question throughout this comparison, I thought it might be fun to quickly go over a few of my recommendations before we get the ball rolling. Remember, the right mattress for you depends on several factors including your weight, height, and preferred sleeping position.

Who Should Buy Leesa

  • If you’re a back sleeper, I think you might enjoy the all-foam Leesa mattress. It’s got a supportive feel that could do a lot to alleviate tension at the hips and lower back. I’d recommend it to sleepers with back pain.
  • If you’re shopping on a budget, I think you’ll probably want to go for the Leesa. Tempur-Pedic is a high-profile brand with price tags to match, so budget-conscious shoppers may be better off going with a great budget friendly mattress like Leesa.
  • I’d recommend the Leesa mattress to hot sleepers as well. Its breathable foam helps it sleep comfortably cool.

Who Should Buy Tempur-Pedic

  • If you’re after a luxurious vibe, you may want to stick with the Tempur-Cloud. This bed is built with thick layers of memory foam, so should provide the sleeper with plenty of sinkage and deep contouring relief (especially at pressure points at the shoulders and hips).
  • I think side sleepers will enjoy this memory foam mattress as well, as it allows for deep sinkage and relief in the shoulders and hips.
  • This all-foam bed is also great at movement-absorption, which couples will appreciate, especially if there’s a restless partner in the mix.

Leesa vs Tempur-Pedic: Similarities and Differences

For the purpose of this comparison, we’ll be comparing the original Leesa mattress to the Tempur-Pedic Tempur-Cloud. While both beds are built of foam, they have very distinct feels that should endear them to different kinds of sleepers. So, before we get started, let’s dig into their main similarities and differences.

Main Similarities

  • As mentioned above, both of these mattresses are built with layers of foam, so they’ll have a slightly softer feel than beds made of springs or pocketed coils.
  • The Leesa and Tempur-Cloud are also infused with some interesting cooling properties to help prevent overheating at night, which is great for those who sleep hot.
  • These beds are both designed with pressure relief and support in mind for a one-two punch of comfort.
  • Both the Tempur-Cloud and the original Leesa are bed-in-a-box mattresses, so they’ll come compressed in a box.

Main Differences

  • In my opinion, the Leesa mattress is slightly firmer than the Tempur-Cloud, so it might be a better fit for back sleepers than its Tempur-Pedic counterpart.
  • With that being said, the Tempur-Cloud is quite soft, so could be a nice option for side sleepers in need of deep pressure relief at the shoulders, hips, and lower back.
  • The Tempur-Cloud performed better on our motion transfer test, meaning it’s better at absorbing movement, which is important for couples or anyone who sleeps with a pet.
  • There’s also a noticeable price difference between these two beds with the Leesa being much more affordable than the Tempur-Cloud.

Leesa and Tempur-Pedic Mattress Feel Comparison

Now that we’ve started to poke around these mattresses, let’s get a better sense of how they feel. To do that, I’m going to give you a brief rundown of all the different factors that make up a bed’s unique vibe, from its firmness level to its pressure relief, support, cooling, and more!

But before we get started, I want to acknowledge that a bed’s feel is always going to be subjective and can change a lot depending on one’s body size, shape, and weight. So, my interpretation of these mattresses may very well differ from your own!

LeesaVsTempurCloudFirmnessGraphic

Leesa

After testing out the Leesa, I decided to give it a 7 out of 10 on the firmness scale. When compared to the industry standard of 6.5 for medium firmness, it’s clear this bed is slightly on the firmer side.

When you initially lie down on the Leesa mattress, you’ll likely feel an immediate softness from the cover and layer of breathable foam. After a moment, you’ll begin to sink a bit into the mattress. I experienced about 1 – 1.5 inches of sinkage as I rolled around into different positions (note: I am 190 pounds, your sinkage will be relative). However, I think one of the best attributes of the Leesa is its responsiveness, by which I mean that it quickly adjusts to your movement and body changes in the night.

For that reason, perhaps the most impressive thing about the Leesa is how supportive it is. No matter the position I was lying in, I could feel the bed actively supporting my hips, lower back, and shoulders. As a stomach sleeper, I never once felt as if the mattress struggled to support me. The foams worked to maintain a consistent spinal alignment and provided a nice level of pushback to prevent me from sinking too deeply into the foams. Similarly enough, my side and back felt just as well supported.

In terms of cooling, I thought the Leesa was excellent. Though memory foam mattresses have a slight tendency for trapping and absorbing body heat, the Leesa can mitigate this issue by putting its layer of memory foam under two inches of breathable foam. If you’re someone who sleeps hot at night, the Leesa could be a great pick for you!

Not only does the breathable foam sleep cool, but it’s also bouncy, which brings some awesome mobility to the mattress. Combination sleepers or folks who enjoy switching positions at night could find a lot to love on this buoyant structure.

Leesa Original

Tempur-Pedic

For me, the Tempur-Cloud gets a 6 out of 10 on the firmness scale. Again, when compared to the industry standard of 6.5 for medium firmness, this marks the bed as just a bit softer than medium-firm.

Compared to the Leesa mattress, the Tempur-Cloud has a ton of sinkage. As soon as you hop aboard the bed, you’re likely to feel yourself sinking pretty deeply into the structure. I noticed that within moments of lying on top of the mattress, I sank in about two inches. After another few seconds, I’d estimate that I sank in about another inch, bringing me closer to three inches of sinkage. This is certainly an extreme vibe, which could work wonders for those who want to feel cuddled by their mattress. However, if you’re not a fan of the “stuck-in-the-bed” feeling, the Tempur-Cloud may not be the one for you.

Though this mattress has too much sinkage for me personally (as a stomach sleeper, I need more support to keep my hips lifted in alignment with my shoulders), I will say that the Cloud does a nice job of maintaining an overall balanced vibe. Plus, the memory foam did provide my shoulders and hips with some cozy pressure relief, which could be a nice bonus for folks dealing with arthritis or joint pain. Additionally, strict side sleepers will find a lot to love in this supremely gentle mattress.

As I mentioned up top, memory foam mattresses have a reputation for heat retention, so I was expecting the Tempur-Cloud to sleep warm. However, I was pleasantly surprised to find that it didn’t sleep warm at all. I felt incredibly cool and cozy. I think the star here is the moisture-wicking cover, which actively works to dissipate body heat throughout the structure. I still think the Leesa does a slightly better cooling job, but you won’t be disappointed by the temperature regulation on this bed either.

One area in which the Leesa does outshine the Tempur-Cloud is bounce. In true Tempur-Pedic form, this mattress isn’t very mobile, so you may find it difficult to move around and change positions. If you’re a strict position sleeper (i.e. only sleeping on your back, only sleeping on your side), this shouldn’t be an issue, but if you’re someone who likes to change it up at night, this may not be the best fit for you.

Comparing What it’s Like to Sleep on the Leesa and the Tempur-Pedic

Whether or not a mattress will work for you can depend on many personal attributes like weight and sleeping position. You may even prefer a certain firmness level. No matter what you need, we make sure to cover how a range of sleepers may experience a bed. Let’s see how the Leesa and Tempur-Pedic could perform for you!

Leesa

Back — The Leesa Original will promote a neutral spine alignment and will cushion the lower back, thanks to its impressive support and gentle pressure relief.

Side — Side sleepers need a mattress that will allow the shoulders and hips to sink in to promote a neutral spinal alignment. I think that side sleepers will need a softer mattress than this Leesa, like one of our best mattresses for side sleepers

Stomach — On the other hand, stomach sleepers need a firm mattress to keep their hips from sinking out of line with their shoulders, which can lead to back pain over time.

Body Weight — Generally, this mattress won’t be supportive enough for any heavy sleeper. I’d recommend a hybrid or innerspring mattress, which are better for heavy people. Most lighter and average weight sleepers will find supportive comfort on the Leesa Original, however, side sleepers may find it to be a bit too firm.

Tempur-Pedic

Back — The Tempur-Cloud will offer back sleepers some awesome sinkage, offering pressure relief in the lumbar region.

Side — Side sleepers will love the memory foam in this mattress, offering cloud-like sinkage for deep pressure relief in the hips and shoulders.

Stomach — The best mattress for a stomach sleeper will offer firm support and lift. The Tempur-Cloud offers plush sinkage instead, and for this reason, I would not recommend the Tempur-Cloud to these sleepers.

Body Weight — I would not recommend this mattress to heavier people over 250 lb, because they need a more supportive and firm mattress with lots of durability. Lighter and average weight sleepers will enjoy the Tempur-Cloud for the most part, but stomach sleepers will need a firmer mattress.

Comparing Leesa and Tempur-Pedic Prices

Of course, your new mattress choice may very well come down to price. So, let’s get a handle on how much these mattresses cost. As I’ve mentioned throughout this comparison, the Leesa is more affordable than the Tempur-Cloud, but let’s break it down by size.

Prices listed will be before discount or offer for each size.

Comparing Leesa and Tempur-Pedic Mattress Materials

So, we’ve done a lot of talking about these mattresses thus far, but let’s take a moment to fully dissect their respective constructions. Below, I’m going to give you a rundown of what’s going on inside these foam beds but would also encourage you to take a peek at my full reviews of the Leesa and Tempur-Pedic Cloud mattresses for even more information.

Leesa

  • Cover – The Leesa has a soft and breathable grey twill cover, which provides some nice comfort as soon as you stretch out on the bed.
  • Comfort Layer – Beneath the cover, you’ll land on a two-inch comfort layer of breathable foam. This material has a quick response to pressure, which makes it easy for folks to move around and change positions. As I pointed out in the feel section of this comparison, that means this bed could be a real winner for combo sleepers. And, as the name suggests, this material adds some nice breathability, so it works to actively cool down the sleeper.
  • Recovery Layer – Up next, you’ll land on a memory foam layer. This material has a much slower response to pressure than the foam above it, allowing for some nice sinkage and contouring relief. But, because it’s beneath a bouncier material, this sinkage never becomes too overwhelming. Additionally, though memory foam tends to trap body heat (as I mentioned earlier), its position under a more breathable foam helps to all but mitigate this issue.
  • Foundation Layer – And finally, we arrive at the foundational layer, made up here of six inches of high-density polyfoam. This firm material gives the bed its shape and stability, working to establish an overall supportive vibe.
Leesa Construction
The Leesa is an all-foam mattress with a comfort layer and a support layer.

Tempur-Pedic

  • Cover – The Tempur-Cloud mattress cover is made from a special 360° stretch fabric that moves seamlessly with the sleeper. It’s also moisture-wicking, so helps to dissipate body heat away from the sleeper.
  • Comfort Layer – The comfort layer of the Cloud is made from the brand’s special TEMPUR® material, which feels and acts like memory foam. As we saw in the Leesa, this material has a super slow response to pressure for deep contouring relief at the shoulders, hips, and lower back. By starting a bed’s construction with memory foam (as opposed to tucking it into an interior layer), you’re going to get a lot more sinkage. This could be great for folks after pressure relief at sensitive joints or strict side sleepers
  • Transition Layer– Beneath the comfort layer, we find another section of TEMPUR® material, but this one is slightly firmer than the one above it. It mainly functions to help ease the sleeper into the sturdy base below. It’s worth mentioning, though, that the memory foam-on-memory foam construction produces a much deeper sink than we saw in the Leesa mattress
  • Foundational Layer – Once again, we arrive at a foundational layer of high-density poly foam.  This material has a quick response to pressure, so works to curb the deep sinkage of the top two layers and bring some stability and shape to the structure.

Leesa vs Tempur-Pedic: Best Qualities

After sizing up their unique feels and mattress constructions, it’s time to wrap things up with a few final recommendations that should help you choose which is the best mattress for you.

In my opinion, the Leesa mattress is going to work best for those who need a little firm support from their bed. The top layer of breathable foam establishes a bouncy and supportive vibe that could do wonders for back sleepers or combo sleepers. It’s also a great cooling mattress, which could make it a good fit for anyone who overheats at night. Lastly, I think the price is more than right on this mattress, marking it as a solid option for the budget shopper.

Conversely, the Tempur-Cloud is going to give you a much more luxurious vibe. There’s a lot of memory foam at play here, which means you’re likely to sink deeply into this mattress for intense pressure relief at the shoulders, hips, and lower back. If you want to feel cuddled by your bed, this could be a great option for you! I’d also recommend the mattress for anyone who sleeps strictly on their side.

Leesa Best Features

  • Back sleepers will likely enjoy the Leesa’s combination of support and pressure relief, especially at the hips and lower back. This is a plus for back pain sufferers as well.
  • The Leesa mattress also sleeps quite cool thanks to its top layer of breathable foam, which could make it a nice option for hot sleepers.
  • I also like how affordable the Leesa is. Budget-savvy shoppers could find a lot to love at this price point.

Comparing Leesa and Tempur-Pedic Customer Service

At Sleepopolis, we rank a brand’s customer service rating based on our interactions with the brand’s customer service team. A brand can either be ranked as Stellar, Great, Satisfactory, or Poor.

Leesa Sleepopolis Customer Service Rating

  • Stellar: they were quick to respond on both chat and phone and provided clear answers to all of my questions. Super personable and sweet!

Tempur-Pedic Sleepopolis Customer Service Rating

  • Great: They have a ton of different ways to connect with support both online and over the phone, which I really appreciated. However, they weren’t as quick to answer my questions as Leesa was, though I’d note that they were kind, knowledgeable, and professional.

Comparing Other Models from Leesa and Tempur-Pedic

Both Leesa and Tempur-Pedic sell a few different mattresses, so I wanted to briefly go over some of these other models.

Leesa Hybrid

  • As the name suggests, the Leesa Hybrid is designed with both innerspring coils and foam, whereas the Leesa is only built with foam. Coils can tend to add a bit of durability to a mattress and allow for more airflow.
  • I found the Leesa Hybrid to be slightly softer than the original all-foam Leesa, marking it as a great option for side sleepers.
  • The Leesa Hybrid also has better edge support than the original Leesa, which could be a big plus for heavier folks or couples.

Leesa Legend

  • The Legend is a luxury hybrid mattress made with high-quality materials, like organic cotton and merino wool.
  • For this reason, the Legend is more expensive than the original Leesa, so may not be the best fit for budget shoppers.
  • I’d also say that the Legend is softer than either the original Leesa or the Leesa Hybrid, which makes it a great go-to for those after a plush, deeply pressure-relieving feel.
  • For more on this mattress, check out my full Leesa Legend review.

Leesa Legend Mattress

Lessa Legend

I love the soft zoned support the Leesa Legend offers. It should provide side sleepers just the right amount of pressure relief at the shoulders and hips. I think this soft feel might also work well for lighter back sleepers.

Tempur-Pedic

The Tempur-Pedic brand currently sells four other mattresses besides the Cloud: the Adapt, Pro-Adapt, LuxeAdapt, and Breeze. I’ll give a brief overview of these Tempur-Pedic models below, but would also suggest you check out my main Tempur-Pedic mattress hub to learn more.

  • The Tempur-Adapt is a quintessential Tempur-Pedic bed in that it features a thick top layer of memory foam for pressure relief as well as a cool-to-the-touch cover to alleviate overheating.
  • The Pro-Adapt takes all the fabulous stuff going on in the Cloud and the Adapt and kicks it up a notch with its SmartClimate Dual Cover System and advanced memory foam
  • The LuxeAdapt features a four-layer design of memory foam and poly foam for a one-two punch of pressure relief and support.
  • The Tempur-Breeze is the coolest Tempur-Pedic mattress in the collection, featuring both a SmartClimate Dual Cover System and a breathable top layer of foam.
