Presidential candidates, and anyone running for office for that matter, have extremely long days while they’re on the campaign trail. Oftentimes, candidates are in multiple cities, or even multiple states every day. It’s no surprise that those running for office can see impacted sleep due to these busy schedules.

It’s safe to say that Vice President and current Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris has definitely been experiencing this during the 2024 campaign season. Not only has the current presidential hopeful been open about sleep struggles that she’s faced during pivotal campaign moments, but Kamala has shared how she’s keeping herself centered during these particularly busy days.

Recently, CNBC reported that the Vice President shared the morning routine that keeps her up and running during long days as Vice President and current presidential hopeful on Shannon Sharpe’s “Club Shay Shay Podcast.” (1)

Read on if you’re curious to find out more about Harris’s morning routine and how it stacks up against other morning routines of American politicians.

What Is Kamala Harris’s Morning Routine?

CNBC reported that while appearing on  the “Club Shay Shay Podcast”, Harris shared her non-negotiables for her mornings. Sharing that “I’m having, I probably estimate, 14 hour, 15 hour days,” and that “no matter how little sleep or how much sleep I’ve had, I work out every morning … You know, mind, body and spirit. That’s the only time of day I really own. (1

In a 2018 interview with The Cut, Harris shared her morning workout routine: “I work out every morning. Usually it’s half an hour on the elliptical or SoulCycle, and on the weekends Soul Survivor. Sometimes I swim if it’s not going to create an issue with my hair.” (2)

Additionally, Harris likes to focus on her morning nutrition, emphasizing her breakfast meal as a crucial part of her morning routine. Back in 2018, her breakfast of choice consisted of “some kind of Raisin Bran in almond milk while I look at my schedule for the day. It’s the generic Raisin Bran that I get from the grocery store.” Harris also shares, “I try to not have a lot of sugar in it. I have tea with honey and lemon and then I’m out the door.” (2)

However, CNBC reports that the Vice President recently shared that her breakfast routine has shifted a bit, and Kamala now enjoys “a spinach omelet, chicken apple sausage and toast.” (1)

Is Kamala Harris’s Morning Routine Healthy?

While your morning routine should ideally reflect the demands of what your mind and body needs throughout the day, it’s never a bad idea to prioritize an early morning workout and a solid breakfast in the mornings.

Eating well-balanced and well-timed meals throughout the day can help you sleep better at night. Additionally, a gentle workout early in the morning can be helpful for waking up.

How Do Other American Politicians Wake Up?

Harris isn’t the only politician who has shared their morning routines that keep them fueled throughout the demands of their job or campaign season. For example, Harry Truman’s morning routine consisted of a 5 – 6 a.m. wake up, a shot of bourbon, a glass of orange juice, and a 10-block walk.

Abraham Lincoln was an insomniac, and would take walks when he couldn’t get to sleep at night. Despite his trouble with sleep, the president would keep a fairly consistent bedtime and wake routine, rising around 7 a.m. to read the paper before eating breakfast.
