Now You Can Sleep In a Bed 60 Feet Above the English Channel

For your next adventure, if a typical Airbnb or hotel reservation isn’t thrilling enough, you might have a third option for sleep. Insert: Cliff Camping.

Young’s Adventure Solutions offers a unique “bed and breakfast” setup for daring individuals: You get to sleep on the face of a cliff in Dorset, England which hangs 60 feet above the English Channel.

According to their website: “All you need is a sense of adventure, a head for heights and a basic level of fitness.”

Your “bed” is a portaledge, a super sturdy, though lightweight tent designed to securely attach to rock. These types of tents are prominent all over the world, often used during major climbing ascents for climbers who spend multiple days and nights on a big wall climb.

Once you hike to the cliff’s edge and get strapped—err, settled—into the portalege, your dinner is lowered down to you by your instructor, just as the sun is setting and waves crash into the shore 60 feet below you. (Who needs a sound machine when you have the natural sounds of water!) Your dishes will be hoisted away when you’re finished, and when you wake up, you’ll be greeted with fresh coffee, bacon, and eggs rolls. Afterwards, your instructor will help you safely back to solid ground.

And don’t worry, the experience comes with a full set of safety equipment, sleeping bags and liners, pillows, and head torches.

Another question you might be wondering is: What if I have to go to the bathroom?

Luckily, there are public toilets throughout the hike to the cliff. Your tour guide will also carry a small, mobile toilet set, and can help hoist you up if you need to leave the portaledge to use it.

Sleeping 60 feet above the English Channel will cost you a pretty penny. An overnight stay is just under $640 USD for one person, and about $355 USD per person for two people. Still, depending on your level of adventure-taking, it also seems like a once-in-a-lifetime sleep experience.
