Calling all Costco shoppers — there’s a mattress waiting for you in the bedding aisle. The Casper Select mattress is meant to be a similar version of the popular Casper Original, but is exclusively sold through Costco (so you can only get it with a Costco membership).
The all-foam Casper Select is designed to bring sleepers both support and pressure relief. But it takes a lot more than a Costco membership to know if it’s the right bed for you. To help out, I put it through a variety of tests, like seeing how it sleeps, what it’s made of, and more. I’ll also let you know which sleepers I think it’s best for, so by the end of this Casper Select mattress review, you’ll have a better idea of whether it’s a good bed for you.

Is the Casper Select a Good Mattress for You?
Before we dive into the nitty-gritty, let’s answer the most important question of all: is the Casper Select going to work for your personal needs? While I can’t decide for you, I can provide you with a quick summary to help you out.
Who I recommend the Casper Select mattress for
- Back sleepers and a lot of side sleepers will enjoy the Casper Select’s zoned support, which will help provide softness beneath the shoulders and support below the hips.
- Couples should be happy with its motion isolating abilities and edge support. This will allow them to use the full surface area of the bed and not disturb each other too much in the night.
- Budget-savvy Costco shoppers will be pleased with this mattress’s affordable price.
Who I don’t recommend the Casper Select mattress for
- I think some strict stomach sleepers will prefer a firmer mattress than this one. This will help promote spinal alignment, which is key in preventing back pain. We have some other great options for stomach sleepers.
- If you like the feel of a traditional innerspring bed, then I’d suggest taking a look at our roundup of best innerspring mattresses instead.
- If you don’t have a Costco membership, this mattress isn’t available for you to purchase. However, the Casper mattress is very similar to it and could be worth checking out.
How Firm is the Casper Select Mattress?
One of the most important components to consider before buying a new mattress is how it feels, but there’s just one problem: feel can be quite subjective. To help with this, I determined the Casper Select’s firmness level by testing it myself and also polling a range of coworkers, so I could be sure to get input from a variety of different sleepers.
Overall, I gave the Casper Select a 7 out of 10 on the firmness scale, which is just a bit firmer than the industry standard for medium firmness of 6.5.
The supportive foams in the Casper Select should keep sleepers propped up on the bed, while also giving them some nice cushioning.
Exclusively sold at Costco, the all-foam Casper Select mattress is meant to be a similar version of the popular Casper Original and is designed to bring sleepers both support and pressure relief.

Casper Select Mattress Performance
While firmness is one of the most important things to consider when searching for a new mattress, there is more to consider to find the right fit for you. To give you a more objective look at how this mattress feels, I ran it through some tests to measure how it performed in different sleeping positions, how it relieved pain, and how it might feel for couples.
Testing the Casper Select Mattress in Different Sleeping Positions
Depending on your body type and preferred sleeping position, you’ll need a different amount of support. Take a look below to see how the Casper Select performs for different sleepers.
Is the Casper Select a Good Mattress for Light Sleepers (Under 130 pounds)?
- Light Back Sleepers – Light back sleepers should enjoy the Casper Select. It will feel pretty firm to them, giving them strong support in the lumbar region.
- Light Side Sleepers – I think the Casper Select will be too firm for a lot of light side sleepers. They might want to check out some of our favorite soft mattresses instead.
- Light Stomach Sleepers – These sleepers should feel comfortable on the Casper Select. The firmer foams around the hip area in the mattress should help promote spinal alignment.
Is the Casper Select a Good Mattress for Average Weight Sleepers (130 – 250 pounds)?
- Average Weight Back Sleepers – These sleepers should be super happy on this mattress and benefit from its zoned support.
- Average Weight Side Sleepers – I think this mattress could work for some of these strict side sleepers. The softer foams at the shoulder aim to provide pressure relief, while the firmer foams at the hips bring support. However, a lot of side sleepers, like myself, may prefer a softer mattress to have more sinkage.
- Average Weight Stomach Sleepers – I think this bed could work for a lot of these sleepers, but some who strictly sleep on their stomach may want a firmer mattress to ensure optimal support.
Is the Casper Select a Good Mattress for Heavy Sleepers (over 250 pounds)?
- Heavy Back Sleepers – The all-foam Casper Select could work for some heavy back sleepers, but heavier sleepers often do better on hybrid or innerspring mattresses; I’d recommend looking at one of our best mattresses for heavy people.
- Heavy Side Sleepers – I think some heavy side sleepers would be happy on this mattress, as they’ll get more sinkage out of the different firmness layers.
- Heavy Stomach Sleepers – I don’t think the Casper Select is going to work for these sleepers. It’s not going to give them enough durability or lift.
Casper Select Mattress Pain Relief Performance
Pain relief is closely tied to pressure relief, which is a mattress’s ability to alleviate tension at pressure points. Depending on your sleeping position, you’ll want pressure relief in different areas. For example, side sleepers with pain need pressure relief at their hips and shoulders, while back sleepers with pain need it at the lower back.
To test the Casper Select’s pressure relieving abilities, I used a pressure map, which I placed on top of the mattress. You can see the results on the image below where pressure is represented from blue to green (low pressure) and orange to red (high pressure).
Back Pain – As you can tell by the mostly blue map, I felt some nice pressure relief while laying on my back and think the Casper Select could be a nice option for back sleepers with back pain. I think lightweight stomach sleepers with back pain could find relief on this mattress, but side sleepers with back pain will likely want a softer mattress.
Shoulder Pain – I think back sleepers with shoulder pain could feel comfortable on this mattress. I started to notice some pressure forming around my shoulder while side sleeping though, so it may not be the best option for side sleepers with shoulder pain. Lightweight stomach sleepers with shoulder pain could also like the softer foams in the shoulder area of this mattress.
Hip Pain – Back sleepers with hip pain should achieve good spinal alignment on the Casper Select. However, the firm foams in the hip region are made to bring support and aren’t very soft. Some side sleepers with hip pain may find they don’t get the needed contouring and sinkage to alleviate the pain. I’d recommend looking at one of our best mattresses for hip pain, which will offer more of a cradling feel.
Casper Select Mattress Performance for Couples
Couples typically will want a mattress that’s responsive enough for sex, absorbs enough motion to prevent disturbance, offers great edge support, and sleeps cool. Take a look below to see how the Casper Select delivers on all these features, and to learn more about why they’re important for sleepers who share a mattress.
Motion Transfer
Motion transfer refers to a mattress’s ability to isolate movement from one side of the bed to the other. It’s especially important for couples or those who sleep with a pet, since it determines whether or not you’ll feel disturbed by a restless partner.
To measure motion transfer, I dropped a steel ball from three different heights (4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches) and measured the movement with a seismometer on the opposite side of the bed. Each height is meant to mimic movements you’re likely to experience in bed, as you’ll see in the chart below.
These were pretty solid results. I think you might feel big movements on the other side of the mattress – like your partner getting in and out of bed – but I don’t think you’ll be disturbed by a little tossing and turning.
Sex
While motion isolation is important, the best mattress for sex is bouncy and responsive, which makes it easy to change positions. The Casper Select is responsive enough for sex without being too bouncy.
Cooling
Cooling is important when looking at a new mattress to share with a partner. Two people tend to overheat more quickly than one. The Casper Select has breathable open-cell foams to help keep body heat away, but it still does an average job with cooling (which isn’t too surprising for an all-foam bed). If you’re on the hunt for a cooling mattress, I’d recommend checking out our top picks here.
Edge Support
Edge support is a measure of how stable you’ll feel on the side of your bed. This is important for couples, who often utilize their bed’s full surface area. I thought the Casper Select mattress had decent edge support, which impressed me for being an all-foam bed.
What is the Casper Select Mattress Made Of?
I’ve mentioned a few times the Casper Select is made of all foam, but let’s dive more into the different layers of foam in this 12-inch bed.
It’s worth noting all the foams in this mattress are CertiPUR-US certified, meaning they’re free from ozone-depleting chemicals and are regulated by the Consumer Product Safety Commission Low VOC (Volatile Organic Compound) emissions for indoor air quality.
Cover – The Casper Select’s mattress cover is made of a blend of polyester, upcycled cotton, rayon, and lycra (a spandex yarn). The combination of these materials allow it to be soft and stretchy. It’s hand sewn and can be zipped off.
Top Layer – The comfort layer is breathable open-cell foam. This layer works to prevent body heat from trapping.
Comfort Layer – Next up is the high-density memory foam layer. This lets sleepers get some pressure relief as they’re cushioned by the foam.
Transition Layer – The zoned transition foam is next. This is the zoned support layer split up into three different sections, so sleepers have a softer foam beneath their shoulders and feet, and a firmer foam beneath their hips.
Foundation Layer – The final layer is a durable support foam to offer stability.
Casper Select Mattress Unboxing and Off-Gassing
Like all bed-in-a-box mattresses, the Casper Select will have a 24-48 hour off-gassing and decompression period after you unbox it. The Casper Select may release an odor during this time, but as long as you keep your mattress in a well-ventilated room, any smell should dissipate after a few days.
Exclusively sold at Costco, the all-foam Casper Select mattress is meant to be a similar version of the popular Casper Original and is designed to bring sleepers both support and pressure relief.

My Final Thoughts about the Casper Select Mattress
Now that we’ve explored all the details of the Casper Select mattress, let’s recap with a few of my favorite things, as well as complaints, about this bed.
My favorite things about the Casper Select Mattress
I think the Casper Select is a great option for back sleepers and should give them the comfort and support they desire. The zoned support in the mattress helps ensure healthy sleep posture and could be relieving for sleepers suffering from back pain. I think depending on the sleeper’s weight, it could also work for some stomach and side sleepers. Since it’s a responsive mattress, I also think it’d be a great fit for combination sleepers who switch between different positions at night. Couples will also really like this bed due to its good responsiveness, motion isolation, and edge support.
My Casper Select mattress complaints
This is a very affordable mattress, but the catch is you need to have a Costco membership to buy it, so it’s not going to be available for everyone. That being said, I think the Casper Original is pretty similar to this Casper bed, along with some of our other favorite memory foam mattress options. Being a medium-firm mattress, I think some strict side sleepers may want a softer mattress and some strict stomach sleepers may want a firmer mattress.
How Much Does the Casper Select Cost?
Price can definitely be a make or break factor in choosing your new mattress. Take a look at the pricing chart below for Costco members, and make sure to check out our Casper coupon page for discounts on their products.

FAQs
Are smart beds expensive?
Yes, smart beds are expensive. However, luxury mattresses that are not “smart” can also be very expensive, so you will need to consider what you really want out of your bed and your budget to decide if a smart bed is worth the price.
Are smart beds better than other beds?
Not necessarily. Smart beds are a great option for couples, people with pain, or people with specific needs, but they are not ideal for everyone. Some people may still really enjoy a traditional mattress, or even prefer it. Consider the things I have mentioned in this review to decide if a smart bed is ready for you.
Do smart beds help you sleep better?
They certainly can! Smart beds can stay cooler than other beds, adjust to your needs, and help you find a position that is just right. In this way, smart beds can help you get really good sleep. However, so can traditional mattresses, so you will just need to think about what you need most out of your mattress.
What are the cons of smart beds?
Smart beds can be really expensive and sometimes they require unique bases, bed frames, and other technology to make them work properly, so they may not be a good option for people shopping on a budget or not looking for tech savvy bed.
