Is the Airweave a Good Mattress for You?
Airweave was founded by Motokuni Takaoka after he took over his uncle’s fishing line company and realized that the resin fiber used to make fishing lines would be a great mattress material. That led him to create Airweave’s unique airfiber material, which has a very unique feel. That feel will work well for some sleepers, but not well for others. So to speed up your research process, let’s kick things off with a few initial recommendations.
Who I recommend the Airweave mattress for
- This bed offers great support for back and stomach sleepers.
- I would also definitely recommend this model for people looking for a really firm feel. It’s one of the firmest beds I’ve ever tested, which could be a bonus for sleepers who struggle with back pain.
- Hot sleepers should appreciate how cooling this mattress is.
Who I don’t recommend the Airweave mattress for
- Side sleepers will likely find this mattress much too firm. I’d recommend they check out our best mattresses for side sleepers instead.
- Sleepers with shoulder pain will need a more pressure-relieving mattress to alleviate stiffness. One of our best mattresses for shoulder pain might be a better fit.
- If you share a bed and are easily disturbed by movement, the bouncy Airweave might not work for you. It’s very easy to feel movement on the opposite side of this mattress. If that sounds like you, check out one of our best memory foam mattresses instead.
How Firm is the Airweave Mattress?
Mattress firmness is a pretty subjective thing. How firm a mattress feels can depend on a bunch of factors, like your body weight and what position you sleep in. For reference, I’m about 5’10” and 190 pounds, and I sleep on my stomach. So, my assessment of a model’s firmness may well be different from yours!
In my opinion, the Airweave is a really firm mattress. The mattress gives you the option of adding a soft padded layer on top, which I did. With that layer, I give it a firmness rating of 8 out of 10, on a scale where a 1 is really plushy and a 10 is incredibly firm. When I lay down on it, I didn’t sink into the bed at all. Without the optional topper, I would give this a firmness rating of 8.5 out of 10.
This mattress is also bouncy enough to easily change positions, which makes it a nice pick for combination sleepers. In general, if you’re looking for a super supportive feel, I’d consider the Airweave. But, if you’d like some softness and pressure relief, this is not the bed for you.

Airweave Mattress Performance
As well as evaluating the firmness of a model, I like to run a few tests to get a better idea of how a bed might feel to different people. Read on below to learn how this mattress will feel to sleepers with different body weights, sleepers with pain, and couples.
Testing the Airweave Mattress in Different Sleeping Positions
Depending on your body type and preferred sleeping position, you’ll need a different type of mattress. Read on below to see which body weights and sleeping positions this bed will feel best for.
Is the Airweave a Good Mattress for Light Sleepers (Under 130 pounds)?
- Light Back Sleepers – Light back sleepers who like an especially firm feel might like this bed, which will help promote a healthy sleep posture.
- Light Side Sleepers – This mattress is much too firm for light side sleepers. They’ll need something with a plusher feel to cushion their pressure points and prevent pain.
- Light Stomach Sleepers – This mattress is a great option for these sleepers. It will really keep their spines aligned from head-to-toe, which is important for avoiding pain in this position.
Is the Airweave a Good Mattress for Average Weight Sleepers (130 – 250 pounds)?
- Average Weight Back Sleepers – Overall I think the Airweave could be a nice option for average weight back sleepers who like a firm mattress. It should do an especially good job supporting their lower backs.
- Average Weight Side Sleepers – The Airweave mattress is too firm for these sleepers. They’ll need much more cushioning around the shoulders and hips to feel comfortable.
- Average Weight Stomach Sleepers – These sleepers should really like the firm, supportive feel of this mattress. It will do a great job keeping their hips lifted up in line with their shoulders, which is a key to preventing lower back pain.
Is the Airweave a Good Mattress for Heavy Sleepers (over 250 pounds)?
- Heavy Back Sleepers – This mattress might actually be a bit too thin for heavy people. While it will offer firm support, heavy sleepers will sink right through this bed’s pillow top layer and may feel like they’re sleeping on a board. On the other hand, if you like an ultra-firm feel, you might like the Airweave.
- Heavy Side Sleepers – See above.
- Heavy Stomach Sleepers – See above.
Airweave Mattress Pain Relief Performance
A bed that relieves pressure can also relieve joint pain, so I always like to measure pressure relief when I test out a new mattress. To test a bed for pressure relief, I use a pressure map, which is basically a pad you roll out on top of a mattress. When you lie down on it in different positions, it maps pressure onto a color-coded map: Blue for areas of low pressure, and red for areas of high pressure.
Take a look at the results below, and then read on to see what that might mean if you sleep with pain.
Back Pain – The pressure map is pretty blue when I’m on my back and stomach, which is a great sign for sleepers with back pain. In general, if you’re a back or stomach sleeper with back pain, I’d recommend checking out the Airweave. A firm bed often helps sleepers with back pain keep their spines aligned and relieve pain.
Shoulder Pain – This mattress is much too firm for sleepers with shoulder pain. It won’t cushion your shoulders overnight, and may exacerbate pain in this area.
Hip Pain – Similarly, sleepers with hip pain need a much softer mattress to get relief. I’d recommend one of our best mattresses for hip pain instead.
Airweave Mattress Performance for Couples
The best mattress for couples will feature good motion isolation, enough responsiveness for sex, some cooling features, and strong edges. Read on to learn more about why each of those features are important, and to see how the Airweave performs in each area.
Motion Transfer
Motion transfer is a measure of how much movement you’ll feel from one side of the bed on the other. If you share a bed, this is a measure of how disturbed you’ll feel when your partner rolls around or gets out of bed. To test motion transfer, I put a seismometer down where you would be sleeping, then dropped a 10-pound steel ball from various heights onto the other side of the bed.
The seismometer results show some really high motion transfer on the Airweave mattress. Based on these results, I wouldn’t recommend this bed to easily disturbed sleepers who share the bed with a restless partner.
Sex
The best mattress for sex is bouncy and responsive, which makes it easy to move around. The Airweave mattress is quite bouncy, which makes it a great pick for sex.
Cooling
Couples overheat more quickly than solo sleepers, so often prioritize a cooling mattress. The Airweave’s unique build promotes a ton of airflow, which means it’s super cooling. If breathability is a priority for you, you’ll definitely want to check out this bed. It does a great job of helping you maintain a lower body temperature throughout the night.
Edge Support
Edge support measures how close to the edge of the bed you can sleep without slipping off. Strong edges make a bed feel larger, which is a perk for many couples. The Airweave mattress has great edge support, I was able to roll all the way to the edge without worrying about the side collapsing.
What is the Airweave Mattress Made Of?
The Airweave mattress is a unique model. Firstly, it’s not your typical bed-in-a-box model—there is some assembly required (more on that below). Plus, it’s made of airfiber blocks rather than typical mattress foams. Below, I’ll break it down layer-by-layer.
As a note, this bed is 8-inches thick with the optional soft layer, and 6-inches thick without it.
Cover — The Airweave’s machine washable outer cover is made of 100% polyester. This mattress cover has a thick, soft feel.
Lining — Below that is a lining made of modacrylic and glass fiber. This lining acts as a fire retardant.
Soft Layer — Next up comes an optional soft layer made of polyester. It adds a slight cushiony feeling and some pressure relief, which helps temper the firmness of the mattress. Personally, I thought it felt a bit like a mattress topper.
Core — The bulk of the mattress is made with an airfiber® core. This is a 100% polyethylene material—a food grade and non toxic plastic. The material looks like a sort of tangled, woven mass of the plastic threads. It’s really bouncy, which helps create that firm feeling, and air space between all the woven threads makes it feel quite breathable and creates a cooler sleeping experience.
Airweave Mattress Unboxing and Off-Gassing
The Airweave mattress ships in two boxes and arrives decompressed. You’ll receive three airfiber blocks that you’ll place inside the mattress cover and lining and then cover with the optional soft layer. Assembly is easy and the blocks aren’t too heavy or difficult to manage. Check out my Airweave mattress setup article for more info.
Because the Airweave ships decompressed, you won’t have to worry about any off-gassing smell after you unpack it. Plus, it will be ready to sleep on right after assembly. That’s uncommon for a bed-in-a-box, so a great perk of the Airweave.

My Final Thoughts about the Airweave Mattress
Well folks, that just about wraps up my review! But before we say goodbye, let’s go over my favorite (and least favorite) things about this bed.
My favorite things about the Airweave mattress
I really love this bed’s unique build. The airfiber material is supremely cooling and supportive, which makes this mattress a great choice for stomach sleepers, back sleepers, and hot sleepers. If you’re looking for a firm mattress and don’t want to worry about off-gassing, this bed is a great choice for you.
My Airweave mattress complaints
On the other hand, I wish this bed was a little thicker. It has a very low profile, which makes me wonder if this bed will be durable enough to support heavier sleepers. And if you’re a side sleeper or someone who prefers a bit more cushioning, this mattress will feel much too firm to you.

Airweave Mattress Vs
Considering the Airweave but not totally positive it’s right for you? Take a look below to see how it compares to two other firm mattresses, the Plank and the Saatva.
Airweave Mattress vs Plank Mattress
- The Plank from Brooklyn Bedding is an all-foam bed-in-a-box mattress with an ultra-firm feel.
- The Plank is flippable, and features a firm and extra-firm side.
- Like the Airweave, this bed is a great pick for stomach sleepers.
- Learn more in my Plank mattress review.
The Plank mattress is an all-foam, flippable mattress with a firm side and an extra-firm side, which makes it great for both back sleepers and stomach sleepers. Both sides of the mattress should provide stomach sleepers with the right amount of support needed, while back sleepers will be happiest on the firm side.
We recommend this mattress for the following sleeper types: Financing options are available for this mattress. This is my 4th foam mattress. Lasting firmness is one of the challenges I have come across with the mattresses. This is the most firm I have purchased and after a few weeks, I am still happy.

Airweave Mattress vs Saatva Mattress
- Unlike the Airweave, the Saatva is an innerspring mattress and does not ship in a box.
- The original Saatva mattress comes in a Plush Soft, Luxury Firm, and Firm model. The firm model feels similar to the Airweave.
- Stomach and combination sleepers should like the firm, bouncy Saatva mattress.

Anthony answered all of our questions during our many phone conversations. Delivery was prompt and went without a hitch. Best of all the mattress is so comfortable! The Saatva’s coil-on-coil construction provides a classic innerspring feel. It's a good option for combo sleepers, who will want to feel free to switch positions and avoid feeling “stuck” in the mattress. It comes in three firmness levels, so you should be able to find one that suits your needs.
