Celebrities have all sorts of funky sleep routines. Some are big fans of mouth taping, while others admit to cosleeping with their older children. From an outside perspective, celebrity sleep habits can seem silly or frivolous, but sometimes these celebs have a good reason for their atypical sleep behaviors.
Take Selena Gomez for example. She rose to fame after appearing on Disney Channel show Wizards of Waverly Place, and over the past few years has made a name for herself as a singer, actress, and talented businesswoman with her makeup brand Rare Beauty. These days, Selena spends her time focusing in on her mental health advocacy, and often shares her own experience with her mental health journey.
Recently, while speaking at Wondermind’s Mental Fitness Summit, Selena shared how her mental health journey has impacted how she sees her bedroom. Elle magazine reported that the star revealed to the audience that she no longer sleeps in her bedroom because of things she went through because of her mental health. (1)

Why Doesn’t Selena Gomez Sleep In Her Bedroom Anymore?
According to Elle’s reporting, the Rare Beauty founder shared that her bedroom became a place that reminded Selena of a dark time in her life, which makes it hard for her to sleep there. Selena shared her experience with audiences at the summit, saying that “I spent too much time in my bedroom that I actually don’t even sleep in my bedroom anymore, because I associate it with such a really dark time.” (1)
Selena has been very open over the past few years about her struggle with psychosis, bipolar depression, and feelings of anxiety. At the summit, she said that “Being anxious is so debilitating sometimes, and yeah, I didn’t want to leave my bed for years, and part of it was I wasn’t doing the work.” Selena went on to add that “you have to believe in yourself to do the work that will truly enlighten you a little bit.” (1)
How Does Selena Gomez Cope With Her Mental Health Struggles?
She also shared with audiences how she copes with her anxieties, sharing that “I think having a positive conversation with yourself, even if that sounds weird, it’s really impactful,” and that she uses this technique to cope with some of the pressures that come with fame, like facing lots of noise and people when she goes out in public. (1)
Selena also told the audience that she leans on the people around her and her therapist to help her on her mental health journey, saying “I have to talk things out. And I have a therapist too, but it’s also nice to have people around you who will just listen to you. There is a freedom in letting go of whatever it is that’s keeping you stuck and that lump in your throat.” (1)
How Can Sleep Impact Your Mental Health?
According to Sleepopolis, sleep and mental health can have a bidirectional effect on one another, meaning that poor sleep can impact your mental health and that your mental health can cause you to sleep poorly. The good news is, that treatment for one (poor sleep or mental health)can have a positive impact on the other.
If you’re struggling to sleep or having struggles with your mental health, you should seek help from your doctor or mental health provider. They can best assess your symptoms and help you make a plan for treatment.
