WinkBed Plus Mattress Overview
The WinkBed Plus is a mattress specifically designed for sleepers over 250 pounds. This mattress is pretty firm, but it will feel even firmer to those who weigh less. It uses durable foam and highly supportive pocketed coils. The combination of latex foam and individually wrapped coils gives the WinkBed Plus plenty of bounce and cooling ability.
The WinkBed Plus is a bed-in-a-box mattress, so it will need 24 to 48 hours to off-gas and decompress after you open it. The WinkBed is also a pretty heavy bed, so I’d recommend having a friend handy to help you get it on your bed frame.

What Is the WinkBed Plus Mattress Made Of?
The WinkBed Plus is a hybrid mattress made with a combination of pocketed coils and latex foam. It has a plush pillow top and an overall supportive and bouncy feel.
Cover – The Plus has a Tencel cover. Tencel is a natural, eco-friendly fiber made from eucalyptus. It has a soft feel and is breathable, which helps prevent overheating.
Pillow Top Layer – The WinkBed Plus’s Euro pillow top is quilted with high-density “anti-sag” gel foam. This layer provides a bit of extra cushioning for your back, hips, and shoulders.
Comfort Layer – Next up is a 2.5-inch layer of latex foam that is zoned to be denser in areas you need added support, like the hips, and softer at the shoulders and feet. Latex has a bouncy yet pressure-relieving feel and is naturally breathable.
Support Layer – Lastly is a layer of individually wrapped coils that are designed to support heavier body weights. This layer gives the mattress its firm, bouncy feel.
WinkBed Plus Mattress Firmness
Now that we know a bit about the WinkBed Plus, let’s get into the nitty gritty and discuss how it feels. When I talk about feel, I like to start with firmness because it gives you the best idea of how you’ll experience the mattress. For this particular mattress, I gave it a firmness rating, and Paulie, a heavier sleeper who also tested the mattress, gave it his own firmness rating. We use a scale of 1 to 10 with 1 representing the softest mattress and 10 representing the firmest mattress.
Personally, I experienced this mattress to be very firm, and I gave it an 8 out of 10 on the firmness scale. Paulie also experienced the Plus to be firm, but since he’s heavier, he did sink into it more. He gave it a 7.5 out of 10 firmness rating. Compared to the industry standard of 6.5 for medium firmness, this mattress is on the firmer side for heavier and lighter sleepers alike.
I think this firmness level is particularly good for back sleepers who suffer from back pain, since they need ample support to keep their spines straight. Combination sleepers could also like this bed, because you should feel much more “on top of” than “stuck” in this mattress.

Sleeping Position and Body Weight
We recognize that people come in all shapes and sizes, and people of every size deserve a mattress that works for their body type. We use the weight categories light, average, and heavy to more easily categorize sleepers based on how mattresses will perform for their body type, as most mattresses are designed for the group we call “average” (130 to 250 pounds).
As a general rule, lighter sleepers don’t require as much support as average weight sleepers, and mattresses will tend to feel firmer to them. On the other hand, heavy sleepers tend to need more support than average weight sleepers and tend to sink into the mattress more.
As far as sleeping positions go, side sleepers tend to need a softer mattress while stomach sleepers usually need a firmer, more supportive one. Back sleepers are usually somewhere in the middle.
Is the WinkBed Plus a Good Mattress for Light Sleepers (Under 130 pounds)?
- Light Back Sleepers – The Plus will feel extremely firm to these sleepers. If you enjoy a firm feel, you’ll like this bed, but I’d recommend checking out a softer WinkBed model instead.
- Light Side Sleepers – This bed is much too firm for these sleepers, who need more pressure relief at the shoulders and hips. They might like the soft model of the original WinkBed.
- Light Stomach Sleepers – These sleepers could like the WinkBed Plus. It will help them keep their hips lifted up in line with their shoulders, which is helpful for avoiding back pain.
Is the WinkBed Plus a Good Mattress for Average Weight Sleepers (130–250 pounds)?
- Average Weight Back Sleepers – These sleepers might like the WinkBed Plus if they like a firm feel. It will help promote a healthy sleep posture for these folks and make them feel supported in the lumbar region.

Is the WinkBed Plus a Good Mattress for Heavy Sleepers (Over 250 pounds)?
- Heavy Back Sleepers – These sleepers should really like this bed. It will help them keep their spines in a nice neutral alignment and should make them feel supported throughout the night.

- Heavy Stomach Sleepers – Though I typically recommend firm mattresses to stomach sleepers, Paulie carries his weight around his stomach, and felt a lot of uncomfortable pressure there due to the firmness of the bed. If you’re a sleeper with a larger midsection, I’d opt for a mattress with a bit more sinkage.
WinkBed Plus Mattress Performance
Our Certified Sleep Science Coaches run a series of tests on every mattress we review. This helps us get an objective view of what it would be like to sleep on them and allows us to make even more specific recommendations to shoppers. Below, I’ll cover how the WinkBed Plus performs in areas such as pain relief, cooling, motion transfer, and more.
WinkBed Plus Mattress Pain Relief Performance
A good way to measure a mattress’s ability to relieve pain is with a pressure relief test. Pressure relief refers to how well a mattress alleviates tension at sensitive pressure points at the hips, shoulders, and lower back. It can be especially important for those who suffer from pain in the hips or shoulder pain, as they’ll want a bed that will cradle sensitive areas.
To measure pressure relief, we rolled out a specialized mat onto the mattress and had Paulie lie down. The mat senses how much pressure is exerted and creates a graphic that maps out the results using thermal imaging. You’ll see low-pressure areas recorded in blue to green and high-pressure areas recorded in yellow to red.
Before looking at the results below, you’ll definitely want to take your sleeping position into account. For example, we don’t recommend firm mattresses like the WinkBed Plus to average weight side sleepers.
Looking at the results, we can see that back and side sleepers with back pain could really enjoy this bed, as the map is only displaying blue and green colors in those areas. Paulie carries most of his weight in his stomach and found pressure buildup in his back when he was stomach sleeping, so those with similar body types may have the same experience.
There was quite a bit of green in the shoulder area when Paulie was on his side, which indicates side sleepers with shoulder pain will need a softer mattress. We’re seeing a lot of green and yellow in the hip area when back and side sleeping, so these sleepers may want to opt for a softer mattress if they already experience hip pain. A lot of stomach sleepers with hip pain should be comfortable on this firm bed, but they may run into trouble if they mainly carry their weight in the stomach area.
Motion Transfer
We use the term motion transfer to reference the amount of movement you can feel from a partner, pet, or child on the other side of the bed. On a mattress with low motion transfer, you shouldn’t feel disturbed by someone tossing and turning at night. We use a variety of tests to determine our motion transfer score.
Human Test
The first test is simple: we lie down on the mattress with a colleague, roll around, and see how much of each other’s movement we feel. We felt that the WinkBed Plus did a decent job of masking movement, and we could only detect the other’s motion if they were getting out of bed or bouncing.
Wine Test
We also place a full wine glass on the mattress and see how much the wine moves around with us. If the liquid has zero to little movement, then it’s a safe bet that the mattress has low motion transfer, which is what you want to see. On the WinkBed Plus, the liquid in the glass moved very slightly but overall wasn’t too affected by my motion on the other side of the bed.
Seismometer Test
Finally, there’s our seismometer test. This involves dropping a 10-pound steel ball from heights of four inches, eight inches and 12 inches, then measuring the disturbance it causes: the bigger the lines on the graph, the bigger the disturbance and the higher the motion transfer.
Looking at the results, we can conclude that the WinkBed Plus has relatively low motion transfer and could be a nice choice for anyone sleeping with a partner or pet. Your sleep shouldn’t be interrupted if the other person tosses and turns.
Responsiveness
We test each mattress’s responsiveness by pressing down on its top layer, removing our hand, and seeing how quickly the surface returns to its original shape. Memory foam usually has a low response to pressure because it’s designed to sink and contour to your body. Hybrid mattresses with coils (such as the WinkBed Plus) tend to have a high response to pressure and are fairly bouncy. Responsive mattresses are usually good for sex since they make it easy to change positions and move around. These traits also make them good for combination sleepers who switch sleeping positions at night.
The latex and coils in the WinkBed Plus make it a responsive and bouncy bed. The firm feel makes it super easy to switch sleeping positions without getting stuck in the foams, so I can see combination sleepers enjoying this mattress.
Cooling
Several factors contribute to a mattress’s cooling ability. First and foremost, we consider its construction. Since the WinkBed Plus has a layer of pocketed coils, there’s plenty of room for air to flow through the mattress and keep it cool. Further temperature regulation comes from the naturally cooling Tencel cover, the gel infusion in the foam, and the breathable latex foam. I think this mattress could be helpful for anyone who sleeps hot at night.
Keep in mind that several outside factors can affect cooling, including the temperature of your bedroom, how close your bed is to an air vent or window, and your body’s temperature, which can vary from person to person.
Edge Support
Edge support is how well a mattress holds up on the sides compared to the center. A mattress with good edge support will allow you to sleep all the way on the side of the bed without feeling like it’s collapsing beneath you. Strong edge support can also add to a bed’s durability, as it helps prevent sagging.
I was super impressed with the edge support on the WinkBed Plus. The mattress has an Extra-Edge Support System, which made me feel quite supported when sitting or sleeping on the edges of the mattress. I don’t think this mattress will sag quickly, and you should be able to spread out without feeling a shift in durability near the edge.
WinkBed Plus Mattress Performance For Couples
Overall, I think this mattress could be an excellent pick for couples, especially if one or both of them are heavier sleepers. Two people heat up quicker than one person, and the layers of cooling technology in the mattress should prevent you both from overheating. The strong edge support allows both partners to fully spread out and use the entire surface area of the mattress, which helps make the bed feel bigger. The bouncy and responsive nature of the coils and latex makes the WinkBed Plus a good mattress for sex. With nice motion isolation, both people should be able to sleep soundly without being woken up by their partner’s movement.
