Most mattresses are designed with people of average weight in mind (in the sleep world, this is classified as 130 to 230 pounds). But if you have a larger body type and weigh 230 pounds or more, you’ve probably experienced some pain points when shopping for a new mattress. Luckily, WinkBed has addressed this issue with the WinkBed Plus, a luxury hybrid mattress built with reinforced materials, including gel foam and latex foam layered over top of heavy-duty coils. This sturdy combination offers comfort and support for plus-size sleepers.
The Sleepopolis team of mattress testers and certified sleep science coaches has collectively tested more than 330 mattresses. We recently met in our Charlotte, NC, sleep studio to give the WinkBed Plus a new round of testing in performance categories such as motion isolation, pressure relief, responsiveness, and more so that we can provide you with up-to-date information.
Some of our major takeaways include the following:
- Although the WinkBed Plus was made with heavier sleepers in mind, it’s actually more versatile than many of the mattresses we’ve tested. It was a big hit with our average-weight sleepers, as well as lightweight sleepers who weigh less than 130 pounds.
- If you, like my husband, often feel like you’re sleeping on the surface of the sun, this mattress will keep you cooler than most.
- Back sleepers of all sizes will benefit from this supportive, medium-firm mattress. When heavyweight tester and Olympian Caine Wilkes was on his back on the WinkBed Plus, he said, “It’s like I’m lying on a cloud right now.”
I’ll break down these tests and more with more expert opinions from Kenny Timper, an average-weight mattress expert, and Asha Birjah, our lightweight tester. Together, we used Sleepopolis’ extensive testing methodology to score it in over a dozen performance areas so we can give you an informed recommendation. I’ll also provide medical guidance from our chief medical advisor, Dr. Raj Dasgupta MD, FACP, FCCP, FAASM, and our director of sleep health, Dr. Shelby Harris, in hopes that you’ll join the more than 60,000 people we’ve helped purchase a mattress.
The WinkBed Plus is a firm, hybrid mattress designed specifically to accommodate heavyweight sleepers. Through our testing, we found it works best for back sleepers, particularly those over 230 pounds. It also does a good job of isolating motion, which will likely appeal to you if you sleep with a partner. If you want to learn more about the WinkBed Plus, check out our video review.
What our tester says:
“This mattress was designed for heavier people and it really is a fantastic bed for these individuals. Heavy people fed up with unsupportive mattresses will find a lot to love about this luxury mattress.” – Bridget Chapman, former Sleepopolis senior product editor
WinkBed Plus Mattress Overview
The WinkBed Plus is a medium-firm hybrid mattress designed for sleepers over 230 pounds. It uses durable foam and highly supportive pocketed coils. The combination of latex foam and individually wrapped coils gives it plenty of bounce and cooling ability.
My fellow testers and I thought this medium-firm bed shined brightly in the testing category of pressure relief. Also, as someone who sleeps with a restless partner, I always pay close attention to a bed’s ability to isolate motion, and the Plus earned a 5 out of 5 for its performance in this category.
If you want to try this mattress out before making your final decision, WinkBeds will ship your bed-in-a-box for free and give you a 120-night sleep trial to do so. If you decide the bed isn’t for you, you can ship it back for a full refund. Those who purchase the Plus will enjoy a lifetime warranty.

WinkBed Plus Mattress Sleepopolis Scores
WinkBed Plus Value
Is the WinkBed Plus a more expensive bed? Yes. Is it worth it? Also, yes. A queen-size Plus costs just under $2,000 (before discounts). While cheaper beds are available with quality materials, the Plus is a luxury mattress that more than justifies its price point with an “anti-sag” Euro pillow top, high-end latex foam, and individually wrapped steel coils. It also comes with free shipping for delivery and returns and a lifetime warranty. Understandably, it isn’t suited to all budgets, but if it fits into yours, I think the WinkBed Plus has excellent value.
What Is the WinkBed Plus Made Of?
The WinkBed Plus is a hybrid mattress. Under its breathable Tencel cover, you’ll find a luxurious Euro top, gel foam, latex foam, and pocketed coils. The construction provides incredible support, cooling, and bounce.
The WinkBed Plus arrived at our Charlotte, NC, sleep studio compressed and rolled into a box. Once we cut away the plastic surrounding the mattress, it instantly started to rise, but it took a couple of hours for it to expand to its full size.

Cover – The Plus has a Tencel cover. Tencel is a natural, eco-friendly fiber made from eucalyptus. It has a soft feel and is breathable, which helps prevent overheating.
Pillow Top Layer – The WinkBed Plus’s Euro pillow top is quilted with high-density, “anti-sag” gel foam. This layer provides a bit of extra cushioning for your back, hips, and shoulders.
Comfort Layer – Next up is a 2.5-inch layer of latex foam that is zoned to be denser in areas you need added support, like the hips, and softer at the shoulders and feet. Latex has a bouncy yet pressure-relieving feel and is naturally breathable.
Support Layer – Last is a layer of individually wrapped coils that are designed to support heavier body weights. This support system gives the mattress its firm, bouncy feel.

WinkBed Plus Mattress Firmness
Mattress firmness and feel are subjective and largely depend on body type and preferred sleep positions. After average-weight tester Kenny evaluated the WinkBed Plus, we settled on a 6.5 on our 1-to-10 firmness scale, where a 1 would represent a bed made of Jell-O and a 10 would feel something like a park bench. Considering that the vast majority of beds are going to be between 5 to 8 on our scale, the WinkBed Plus is considered medium firm, making it a versatile and appealing mattress.
Dr. Dasgupta said, “Individual factors like body weight and sleeping position can change how a mattress feels.” He also stated that side sleepers typically like a slightly softer bed that cushions their sides, back sleepers generally benefit from a medium-firm mattress, and stomach sleepers usually need a firm mattress to keep their hips elevated.
After evaluating the firmness in all three sleeping positions, Kenny was particularly fond of this bed on his back, saying, “I think the WinkBed Plus is awesome for back sleepers! It filled out my lower back and kept me feeling aligned throughout.”
WinkBed Plus Mattress Performance
My fellow certified sleep science coaches and mattress experts run a series of tests on every mattress we review. This helps us get an objective view of what it would be like to sleep on them and allows us to make even more specific recommendations to shoppers. Below, I’ll cover how the WinkBed Plus performs in areas such as pain relief, cooling, motion transfer, and more.
WinkBed Plus Pressure Relief Performance
If you’ve ever gotten into bed and felt your aches and pains melt away, it’s a solid bet that your mattress has top-notch pressure relief. Pressure relief refers to how well a mattress alleviates tension at sensitive pressure points in the hips, shoulders, and lower back. It can be especially important for those who suffer from hip or shoulder pain, as they’ll want a bed that will cradle sensitive areas.

We test a bed’s pressure-relieving capabilities with a specialized mat that we place on top of the mattress. Then, our testers lie on their sides and backs. Using thermal technology, the mat maps where pressure is building along the body and sends color-coded graphics to our computer. If the images are covered in red and yellow, the sleeper is feeling pressure around that area. However, we feel confident a mattress is a good pain relief candidate if we see primarily blue and green.

Weight and sleeping position are factors in the amount of pressure someone feels. Therefore, I served as the average-weight tester, and Asha and Caine represented lightweight and heavy sleepers, respectively. When we finished these tests, our pressure maps were filled with blue and green, and WinkBed Plus had gained three fans after earning a 4.7 overall for both side and back pressure relief.

Although this bed is designed for plus-sized sleepers, Caine was the only one who reported any pressure buildup on his side. When he was on his side, he said, “I feel a little bit of pressure on my shoulder, but my hips feel aligned, and there is no pressure on my neck.” Asha appreciated how her hips were elevated and her spine aligned when she was on her side, but she felt a slight gapping around her lower lumbar region when she was on her back.
WinkBed Plus Motion Isolation
My husband is lovely, but sharing a bed with him is like wrestling with a honey badger. He flips and flops as if he is coming off the top rope to claim his world championship wrestling title, and before we got a bed that prevented his motion from transferring to my side of the bed, we were headed for a sleep divorce. Since the issue hits so close to home, I scrutinize beds closely for motion isolation, which we assess through a partner test and ripple test. The WinkBed Plus performed very well in both of these, earning a 4.3 in this category.
Partner Test: Kenny called in fellow mattress tester Livvi DiCicco, to help him with the partner test. After he slid a sleep mask on, Livvi got in and out of bed and switched positions. Kenny thought the mattress did an excellent job of preventing motion from transferring from one side of the bed to the other. He said, “I could feel Livvi’s movements here and there, but I couldn’t make out what she was doing, and I didn’t even notice when she got out of bed.”
Ripple Test: Kenny filled a large rectangular tub halfway with water and then watched how much it rippled when he got out of bed and switched from his back to his side to his stomach. He noted that he only saw an almost-imperceptible gentle wave when he got in or out of bed. When Kenny switched positions, he said, “I went crazy on the other side of the bed, and the water didn’t slosh around much. When I moved normally, I noticed no motion in the container.”
Looking at the results, we can conclude that the WinkBed Plus has relatively low motion transfer and could be a nice choice for anyone sleeping with a partner or pet. Your sleep shouldn’t be interrupted if the other person tosses and turns.
WinkBed Plus Responsiveness
A mattress’s responsiveness is how quickly it returns to its original shape after applying weight or pressure. A high score for responsiveness not only tells us how easily combination sleepers can switch positions on the mattress but also suggests it can aid sexually active couples. If you’ve ever gotten awkwardly stuck during a moment of intimacy, you’re probably well aware of how important this category is. The WinkBed Plus springs back with cat-like reflexes, earning it a 5 out of 5.
To test responsiveness, we take a three-pronged approach:
Switch test: The switch test is a simple one. We have a tester get on the mattress and note how difficult it is to switch positions. After doing this, Kenny said, “I think this bed is incredibly easy to switch positions despite the cover sinking in slightly. I think most people should be able to change positions on this mattress with no trouble. The memory foam in the top layers is dense and sturdy, and I don’t think they’d sink in too much into the bed, even for heavier people.”
Sinkage test: We test how far a mattress sinks by placing a 53-pound kettlebell on it and seeing how far it compresses the mattress. We then use a ruler to measure the sinkage. The WinkBed Plus sank less than 4 inches, just slightly more than the 3.25-inch average.
Bounce test: For the bounce test, we climb 6 feet up a ladder and drop a 25-pound weighted ball on the surface. Using a measuring tape that’s attached to the wall, we check how high the ball bounces back up. The WinkBed Plus’s bounce measured 15.5 inches, putting it at the head of the class for this category.
WinkBed Plus Cooling
If you’ve ever kicked your covers off to find cooling relief in the middle of the night, you may need a bed with better cooling capabilities. To predict how well the WinkBed regulates body temperature, we use a thermal gun test, a cover test, and a feel test. When we evaluated the results of these tests, we saw a clear pattern of cooling excellence, rendering a perfect score of 5.
We use a thermal temperature gun to collect an initial surface temperature. Once we had that, Kenny lay on the bed for 5 minutes. He used this time to perform the cover and feel tests. These tests are simple and subjective, with Kenny evaluating if the cover was cool to the touch and if he felt his temperature rising while he was on the bed. When his five-minute alarm sounded, Kenny took a temperature reading, and it had only risen to 71 degrees Fahrenheit. When the temperature increases less than 5 degrees during this test, it indicates premier cooling.
Although Kenny didn’t think the bed felt cool to the touch, he said, “I didn’t feel the mattress heat up when I was lying on it. I felt comfortable the entire time.”
If you’re a hot sleeper, check out our best cooling mattresses. If you want to make the bed you own cooler, read about the best cooling sheets.
WinkBed Plus Edge Support
In a perfect world, the edges of a mattress would be as supportive as the center of the bed. However, this isn’t always the case. Strong edges provide security when someone sleeps close to the perimeter, mobility assistance when getting in and out of bed, and the ability for couples to stretch out and enjoy the entire bed. Therefore, we sit and lie on the edge of the bed to gauge how sturdy the edges are.

When Kenny sat on the edge, he didn’t feel like he would slip off. He said, “Even though the bed is tall and I’m not, I found it very easy to get in and out of bed. I think this mattress would be a solid choice for older adults and people with mobility issues — if they are tall enough.”
He felt some slight sinkage through the cover layer when he lay on his back, side, and stomach. “However, at no point did I feel like I was slipping off or unstable,” Kenny said. “I think people should have no problem using the entire surface area of this bed.”
WinkBed Plus Performance for Couples
Evaluating a mattress for couples rather than individuals requires special considerations. Medium-firm beds like the WinkBed Plus are often ideal for couples with different firmness preferences.
If your partner is restless like mine or you go to bed at different times, you’ll also want a bed that absorbs motion well. Considering that two bodies can cause a mattress to heat up more than one, couples usually need a bed with excellent cooling performance. Sexually active couples can benefit from a responsive mattress as it allows them to change positions more easily. Also, couples who like to stretch out and use the whole surface will want to make sure that their bed has top-notch edge support.
When looking at these performance categories, the WinkBed Plus should be a top choice for couples. However, if you’d like additional options, check out our choices for best mattresses for couples.
Other Performance Factors to Consider
By this point, you may be saying, “Who knew so much went into testing a mattress?” However, mattresses are a substantial investment, and you don’t want to rush into a big purchasing decision without a full idea of what to expect. We spend a lot of time assessing every bed that comes into our studio and want to give you a complete rundown of all the factors you should consider. Here are a few more features we evaluate for each mattress we test.
Sex
When I evaluate a bed for sex, I ask myself, Is this a bed that would enhance or hinder my experience? I think of how easy it is to move around and if the mattress will contour and cushion areas such as knees, hips, and shoulders during intimacy. Ultimately, the best mattresses for sex are responsive and provide some bounce. However, I also like them to have balanced support and a little plushness. With those considerations in mind, I think the WinkBed Plus is an excellent choice for sex.
Noise
A bed that squeaks, moans, or sighs can quickly become a sleeper’s version of “The Tell-Tale Heart.” Therefore, when bouncing and rolling around on the mattresses for other tests, we also evaluate how noisy it is. My note for the WinkBed Plus’s noise level said it was stone-cold quiet.
Base Compatibility
The WinkBed Plus is compatible with adjustable bases. With that said, I found it most comfortable when there were two people on the bed. This prevented gapping between the mattress and the frame. However, the thickness of this mattress caused me to feel scrunched when the bed was in the lounge and TV-watching setting. It also pulled my shirt until it felt like my collar was choking me. It was more comfortable when the base adjusted the head or the feet for sleeping. For more beds that do well with adjustable bases, check out our roundup of the best mattress for adjustable bases.
Durability
Since we only spend a short amount of time with a mattress, we can’t give an assessment of how it holds up over the years. However, we can evaluate its materials and company reputation. We also look at how it performed in support, edge support, materials, and warranty.
Given that the WinkBed Plus is very supportive, made with high-quality materials, and comes with a lifetime warranty, I think it will be a durable mattress for years to come. This is key because when it comes to durability, Dr. Dasgupta says, “Mattresses for heavier sleepers need to offer strong support throughout, including reinforced edges that prevent sagging.”

WinkBed Plus Sleeping Position and Body Weight
Your body weight can largely determine how a mattress will feel for you. For example, what feels firm to a lightweight sleeper could feel softer to an average or heavy sleeper. For this reason, we bring expert testers from all three weight categories into our studio and ask them to try the bed in three sleeping positions. This allows us to provide specific recommendations to our readers based on their weight and position preferences.
Before we dive into our recommendations, though, we want to recognize that people come in all shapes and sizes, and people of every size deserve a mattress that works for their body type. We use the weight categories light, average, and heavy to more easily categorize sleepers based on how mattresses will perform for their body type, as most mattresses are designed for the group we call “average” (130 to 230 pounds).
As a general takeaway, lighter sleepers don’t require as much support as average-weight sleepers, and mattresses will tend to feel firmer to them. On the other hand, heavy sleepers tend to need more support than average-weight sleepers and tend to sink into the mattress more. As far as sleeping positions go, side sleepers tend to need a softer mattress, while stomach sleepers usually need a firmer, more supportive one. Back sleepers are usually somewhere in the middle.
Is the WinkBed Plus a Good Mattress for Light Sleepers (Under 130 pounds)?
- Light Back Sleepers – Although designed for heavier people, our lightweight tester, Asha, found that the WinkBed Plus contoured around her body and evenly supported it. She noticed some slight gapping around her lower back that she wished could have been filled in more, though.
- Light Side Sleepers – Asha, who weighs about 120 pounds, felt cushioned and supported when she was on her side. Her hips felt aligned with her spine.
- Light Stomach Sleepers – Lightweight stomach sleepers should appreciate the excellent support and gentle contouring this bed provides. The WinkBed Plus should elevate hips and provide stomach sleepers with excellent spinal alignment.

Is the WinkBed Plus a Good Mattress for Average-Weight Sleepers (130–230 pounds)?
- Average-Weight Back Sleepers – I loved the WinkBed Plus when I was on my back, especially the lower portion. It had a lot of cushioning around the lower lumbar region, and the combination of spinal alignment and contouring made the WinkBed Plus feel like it was melting my tension and back pain away.
- Average Weight Side Sleepers – I’m a side sleeper, and I loved how the plush Euro top and foams felt around my hip. The only issue I had is that the bed elevated my hip a little too much, which caused pressure on my shoulder.
- Average-Weight Stomach Sleepers – Although I got out of the habit of consistently switching from my side to my stomach when I was pregnant, I still enjoy sleeping on my stomach on occasion. When I do, I’d love to have the supportive WinkBed Plus support my hips and keep my spine in alignment.
Is the WinkBed Plus a Good Mattress for Heavy Sleepers (over 230 pounds)?
- Heavy Back Sleepers – Caine, our heavyweight tester, said that the WinkBed Plus felt so good on his back that he thought he was on a cloud. He felt cushioned, supported, and completely aligned.
- Heavy Side Sleepers – Although his hips felt aligned with his spine, Caine noticed a slight pressure around his shoulder when he was on his side, but that pressure didn’t extend into his hip.
- Heavy Stomach Sleepers – The WinkBed Plus is a toss-up for those over 230 pounds. I think the level of support and comfort these sleepers feel on this mattress will largely depend on where they carry their weight. Stomach sleepers who carry most of their weight in their midsection may not find this bed as comfortable as those who have their weight concentrated in other areas.

My Final Thoughts About the WinkBed Plus Mattress
This mattress was designed with plus-size sleepers. However, I think the Plus in its name could also be a nod to all that this mattress has going for it. By using testers with different weights and body types, we learned that this mattress can also be a solid choice for many lightweight and average-weight sleepers. Check out who I think should add this to their cart and who should continue their mattress search.
Who I Recommend the WinkBed Plus For
- This mattress is a great choice for heavy sleepers weighing over 230 pounds — it was designed with them in mind!
- The combination of the Tencel cover, gel-infused memory foam, latex foam, and a coil system makes this mattress very cooling and a great choice for hot sleepers.
- I really like this mattress for couples due to its high responsiveness, low motion isolation, and great edge support.
- I think back sleepers can be really happy on this mattress since it has the firm support needed to promote a neutral spinal alignment.

Who I Don’t Recommend the WinkBed Plus For
- I think strict side sleepers, especially those with shoulder pain, will need a softer mattress that allows them to sink in a bit more and find additional cushioning for the pressure points on the hips and shoulders. I’d recommend one of our best mattresses for side sleepers instead.
- The WinkBed Plus may be out of some budget shoppers price range, but keep in mind WinkBeds regularly runs sales and we have coupons available for you, as well. It’s also a sturdy mattress that comes with a lifetime warranty.

WinkBed Plus Vs Competitor
Before recommending you purchase a new mattress, we like to compare it to similar ones from its competitors and other popular online mattress companies. Here, I’ll compare the WinkBed Plus to the Saatva HD and Big Fig.
WinkBed Plus vs Saatva HD
Like the Plus, the Saatva HD is designed for heavier sleepers and has more support than Saatva’s other models.
- Price: The Saatva HD is a bit more expensive than the WinkBed Plus.
- Sleeping position: The WinkBed Plus may be too firm for most side sleepers, but the Saatva HD is a bit softer and could be just right.
- Cooling: Both mattresses contain layers that promote cooling and are nice choices for hot sleepers.
- Body weight: Both mattresses are constructed with extra-supportive materials to ensure they are compatible with sleepers weighing more than 230 pounds.

Our Review Process
At Sleepopolis, our team of certified sleep science coaches personally test each mattress. We start by unboxing the mattress to figure out how difficult (or easy) it is to get the mattress from the box to the bed. Then, we spend time lying on the bed in different positions, taking time to assess it on our backs, stomachs, and sides. Next, we perform our Sleepopolis tests, using specialized tools to measure qualities like motion transfer, bounce, and pressure relief. Our last step is to open up the mattress and take a look at each layer. These steps allow us to give our final verdict on the mattress.
