Today I’ll be taking a look at a unique brand in the bed-in-a-box sphere: Tochta, a mattress company that specializes in creating customized luxury beds for travel trailers, campers and RVs. Customers are involved in nearly every aspect of the mattress’ design (from profile height to thickness all the way to corner shape), ensuring that the finished product is absolutely perfect for their space.
While all this customization is very cool, I’m not going to be sold on this puppy until I put it through a few tests to figure out how it feels, how it sleeps and whether or not it could be the mattress of your dreams!

Is the Tochta Utopia a Good Mattress for You?
Is the Tochta Utopia right for you? Below, you’ll find my thoughts and recommendations on who I think this memory foam mattress could be really great and not-so-great for. Let’s dive in!
Who I recommend the Tochta Utopia mattress for
- I think the Utopia would make a fantastic pick for anyone who wants that classic memory foam feel without the stuck-in-the-bed feeling that’s often associated with the material.
- The mattress is also great for side sleepers as its gentle foam layers do an excellent job of cushioning the shoulders and hips.
- And finally, one of the biggest selling points of this bed is its customization. If you own an RV, truck or trailer and have had issues finding a bed to fit in the space, Tochta might just be the solution you’ve been waiting for.
Who I don’t recommend the Tochta Utopia mattress for
- If you’re looking for a bouncier, supportive vibe (the kind you might get from an innerspring or hybrid model), the soft foam feel here may not be ideal for you.
- Similarly, strict stomach sleepers may find the Utopia to be too soft for their tastes and may want to check out the brand’s firmer beds.
How Firm is the Tochta Utopia Mattress?
Now, let’s chat about the firmness and feel. I started off by applying light hand pressure to the mattress and found that I was immediately interacting with the gentle memory foam top layer. I sank in easily into this top section and felt some satisfying comfort from the material.
Since folks of different sizes and shapes are going to feel firmness differently, I decided to bring in three other testers to help me figure out the Utopia’s overall firmness. To do this, we each took a turn lying on the bed, decided on our own personal firmness rating and then compiled all of them on the graph below.
While feel is always going to be an individual thing, our responses should give you a better sense of the firmness range you can expect from the mattress.
My fellow testers and I landed on an average firmness rating of 5.5 out of 10. When compared to the industry standard of 6.5 for medium firmness, it’s clear that this bed is pretty soft.
I found that its all-foam design made for a super gentle feel. The top layers in particular are likely to provide the sleeper with some deep body contouring and pressure relief, which is especially good news for side sleepers. If you think a 5.5 might be too soft for your needs, keep in mind that Tochta’s two other beds (the Journey and Divini) are designed to be firmer than the Utopia.
Tochta Utopia Mattress Performance
We use a variety of tools to test a mattress for the important features you care about. This includes sleeping position, edge support, pressure relief, and even body type. Let’s take a look at how the Utopia performs in each of these areas.
Testing the Tochta Utopia Mattress in Different Sleeping Positions
What box do you fit into? Every sleeper is different, and not everyone necessarily fits under one term or the other. We all have different shapes, sizes, and preferences. It’s crucial to know how a mattress will react to your particular body and how you sleep. Below, you’ll find a layout of how the Utopia may behave for a variety of sleepers.
Is the Tochta Utopia a Good Mattress for Light Sleepers (Under 130 lb)?
- Light Back Sleepers – The Utopia should fill in the lumbar region and offer a comfortable contour for this sleeper, making for a great night’s sleep.
- Light Side Sleepers – I think the all-foam construction in the Utopia will offer the ultimate, cushiony support these sleepers need.
- Light Stomach Sleepers – This Tochta model could feel a bit too soft for these sleepers. It’s likely to create added pressure, as these sleepers’ hips sink out of line with their shoulders.
Is the Tochta Utopia a Good Mattress for Average Weight Sleepers (130 – 250 lb)?
- Average Weight Back Sleepers – I think this mattress will offer a solid mix of pressure relief and pleasant contouring for this sleeper, without depriving them of mobility.
- Average Weight Side Sleepers – I think this mattress would offer the classic memory foam feel these sleepers enjoy, especially in the shoulder and hip areas.
- Average Weight Stomach Sleepers – Because this mattress is so soft, I don’t think these sleepers would feel as “on top” of the mattress as they’d like.
Is the Tochta Utopia a Good Mattress for Heavy Sleepers (over 250 lb)?
- Heavy Back Sleepers – This mattress has a soft, all-foam construction that would likely make these sleepers feel “stuck in” rather than on top of the Utopia. For a firmer and better-suited sleep spot, I’d recommend looking at our picks for best mattresses for heavy people.
- Heavy Side Sleepers – See above.
- Heavy Stomach Sleepers – See above.
Tochta Utopia Mattress Pain Relief Performance
Another important component of feel is pressure, or where you’re likely to feel pressure points form while lying on top of a bed. Rather than just describing where these tension spots might crop up, I thought I’d provide you all with a visual representation instead.
To do this, I placed a pressure map on top of the mattress and lied on my back, side, and stomach. You can see the results on the image below where pressure is represented from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).
Back Pain – I experienced a great amount of pressure relief while on my back, which I think is super important for these sleepers. I also found that while the Utopia is very pressure-relieving and soft for side sleepers, it may not offer enough support. And I would simply steer stomach sleepers in a different direction here, due to lack of firmness and sinking concerns. There is a layer of high-density poly foam, but depending on your personal needs and wants, I’m not sure it will offer everyone the best support.
Shoulder Pain – I would 100% recommend the Utopia for side sleepers here, because of the high-quality contouring and pressure relieving capabilities. However, I worry a bit more about back and stomach sleepers here, since this mattress is so soft, I think they’d feel “stuck in”it, which would throw the hips and shoulders into an uneven alignment.
Hip Pain – Since hip pain requires an even softer mattress, I continue to recommend the Utopia for side sleepers. I think that stomach sleepers should take a look at our picks for the best mattress for stomach sleepers, since this mattress would likely just be far too plush. And for those who tend to lay on their back most nights, while I think this soft-to-touch bed would comfort them, ultimately it’s going to be just a bit too soft for these sleepers.
Tochta Utopia Mattress Performance for Couples
When considering the needs of couples, we’re entering a completely different wheelhouse. This is because we’re looking at the needs and wants of two different people in the same space. Two partners sleeping together creates concerns about the transfer of motion, amount of edge support, intimacy, and cooling properties in a quality mattress. Good thing for you, I cover them all down below. Let’s go!
Motion Transfer
Next up, let’s chat motion transfer, which will be particularly important for those of you who plan on sharing your bed with a partner. Basically this test is going to let you know how much disturbance is detectable across the surface of the mattress i.e. whether or not your bed mate’s tossing and turning in the night is going to drive you up the wall.
To illustrate this motion transfer, I dropped a 10-pound, steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and measured the disturbance it caused: the bigger the lines, the bigger the disturbance.
FYI: Each drop is meant to symbolize a different movement you’re likely to experience in bed, from tossing and turning (4”) to getting out of bed (8”) all the way to full on jumping (12”).
I’d say these are pretty strong results! While there’s a steady increase of disturbance with each drop, the memory foam in the comfort layer does an excellent job of containing the majority of this motion. What this tells me is that you’re not likely to be too disturbed by your partner’s movements in the night.
Sex
Feaures such as bounce and mobility are crucial for sex. With the Tochta Utopia, we have a foam and latex design that makes the mattress quick-responding, bouncy, and allows you to move freely across the bed’s surface. Though it’s not the bounciest I’ve ever seen, I would recommend this bed for sex.
Cooling
Two is always better than one right? Not when it comes to body heat. Though memory foam gets a bad rap as far as overheating, the Tochta does have a gel-infused, comfortable mattress layer that fights against heat, working to keep you cool. The latex layer of foam below will also help with temperature regulation. For a bed more cooling-centered, feel free to check out our top picks for best cooling mattress as well.
Edge Support
Scooting close to the edge, I noticed some pretty deep compression through the top layers. All-foam mattresses like this tend to struggle with support at the side, and I certainly noticed that here as well. However, I would say that I never felt as though I’d roll out of the bed.
What is the Tochta Utopia Mattress Made Of?
The Tochta Utopia features an all-foam construction made up of four distinct layers, measuring up to anywhere between four to ten inches depending on how you customize the bed. The design includes both memory foam and latex, which should create an interesting interplay between deep pressure relief and bouncy support.
I should mention that the Tochta comes in 12 standard sizes (ranging from an RV bunk to a California King), but that you can also customize the thickness, width and length to create a myriad of sizes in between. And in case the space in your RV or truck has an odd corner or two, you can also opt for either an angle, notch or radius corner cut.
That being said, while I am reviewing a standard Queen size Utopia mattress, this is just one of many shape and size variations available from Tochta.
To see how all of this comes together, let’s dive right into the bed!
Cover – The cover is made of a polyester/spandex blend, which makes for a stretchy material that won’t bunch up as you move around. It’s also pretty thin, allowing for some nice breathability up top.
Comfort Layer – Built with soft gel visco memory foam, the comfort layer provides the sleeper with immediate relief. While you’ll likely experience some nice contouring at the shoulders and hips as you sink into the material, you shouldn’t feel too stuck in the bed as it has a surprisingly quick response to pressure. And though memory foam has a bit of reputation for overheating, the gel infusion here helps to mitigate this and keep things cool.
Bounce Layer – Up next, you’ll find a layer of latex foam. This material works to extend the compression of the top layer deeper into the mattress while also providing a bit of buoyant lift to keep you positioned on top of the bed. It’ll also help with temperature regulation throughout the structure as the material doesn’t really trap body heat.
Transition Layer – Below the bounce layer lies a section of proprietary transitional foam. The main function of this layer is to gradually ease the sleeper into the firm base.
Foundation Layer – And finally, the base of the mattress, which is comprised of high-density polyurethane foam for durability and support.
Tochta Utopia Mattress Unboxing and Off-Gassing
If you decide on the Tochta Utopia for your next new mattress, you’ll be greeted by a box measuring 20 inches by 20 inches by 42 inches. You’ll want to unbox your bed in the room you intend it to be in for the long haul. Upon opening, you may remove your mattress from the box and slowly remove the plastic packaging. You’ll immediately notice the mattress beginning to expand, and full expansion should occur within minutes!
Tochta’s beds are made to order and sent immediately, not sitting in warehouses like some of their competitors. This means that there will be very little odor besides that “new” smell that often comes with other big purchases, like a car.
My Final Thoughts about the Tochta Utopia Mattress
Before I bid you adieu, let’s examine my final thoughts and take note of some key takeaways for the Tochta Utopia.
My favorite things about the Tochta Utopia mattress
I think this Tochta mattress is an exceptional choice for side sleepers due to its plushy layers of foam that cushion the shoulders and hips. I also think that this foam will really impress the memory foam lovers out there as it lacks the sinking quicksand feeling that other mattresses tend to have. Along with the memory foam, the latex foam addition should prove to be a home run for couples too. Finally, customization! Not only can you specify thickness and height, but you can also request cut or rounded corners depending on the space in your RV or truck. RV Full, RV Queen, RV King, you name it! And don’t worry — Tochta walks you through all the different measurements you need to take with an easy-to-follow interface on its website.
My Tochta Utopia mattress complaints
Though the Tochta’s bounce is still a plus for sex, if you’re looking for an even bouncier and more supportive mattress, you’ll want to look elsewhere. I’d recommend taking a look at our best innerspring mattress or our best hybrid mattress picks if this is the case. I also found that the Utopia may be too soft for stomach sleepers. If you’re looking for a firmer mattress, you could potentially look at Tochta’s Journey, which has a medium-firm feel, or their Divini model, which offers 9 different firmness levels.
