Today, I’ll be taking a look at the Roma mattress from Sleep EZ, one of several latex beds from the family-owned brand. What sets apart the Roma from the rest of the EZ line is that it’s flippable, featuring both a “Medium” and “Firm” side that you can change whenever the mood strikes you.
But the question remains: is this dual-sided latex bed actually comfortable? To find out, I’ll be putting it to the test, assessing everything from its feel to its sinkage to determine whether or not it could be the perfect mattress for you.

CONSTRUCTION
The Roma mattress is outfitted with a straightforward construction of just two layers of 100% natural Dunlop latex. When compared to other types of latex, Dunlop is a bit denser, making for a firm, supportive material.
As I mentioned up top, the Roma is flippable and can be oriented in either a “Medium” or “Firm” feel. For the purpose of my assessment, I kept the mattress in “Medium.”
To see how all this comes together, let’s dive into the bed!
Cover – Crafted with organic cotton, the cover is super soft and breathable. It also features channeled quilting, which is meant to provide the sleeper with some additional comfort and make it easier for sheets to stay attached to the bed.
Latex Layer – Latex is known for a few different things. Firstly, it’s an extremely bouncy material that’ll allow for some sinkage, yes, but will also keep you lifted on top of the structure to prevent any sort of stuck-in-the-bed feeling. It’s also imbued with fantastic cooling properties, which means you’re not likely to overheat in the night. And lastly, it’s all-natural, so could be a great fit for sleepers trying to bring a little green into their bedrooms.
FIRMNESS
After taking a look at the construction of the Roma, let’s chat about the firmness and feel. I started off by applying light hand pressure to the mattress and found that I was immediately interacting with the gentle cover, which provided me with some pleasant comfort. Pressing in further, I encountered the buoyant latex core, which lifted me up and out of the bed.
Since folks of different shapes and sizes are going to experience beds differently, I decided to bring in three other testers to help me figure out how firm the Roma is. To do this, we each took a turn lying down on the bed, gave it a personal firmness rating and then compiled them all on the graph below.
While feel is always going to be an individual thing, our responses should hopefully give you a sense of the firmness range you can expect from the bed.
As you can see, we were in unanimous agreement here, giving the Roma an average rating of 6.5, which syncs up perfectly with the industry standard for medium firmness.
Though you’re likely to sink into the latex layers for some pleasant relief, the bounce from the material is intended to keep you positioned on top of the structure. Keep in mind that if you find the “Medium” side too soft for your liking, you can always flip the bed so you’re sleeping on the “Firm” configuration, which features less sinkage and a more controlled bounce.
While the former orientation will be best suited for side sleepers, the latter will bring some much needed spine-aligning support to all you strict stomach sleepers out there.

PRESSURE MAP
Another important thing to consider when buying a new bed is its pressure, or more specifically where pressure points are likely to form while lying on top of it.
To help you visualize where these tension spots might crop up, I placed a pressure map on top of the mattress and lied on my back, side, and stomach. You can see the results on the image below where pressure is represented from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).
Back – Lying on my back, I felt as though my weight was pretty evenly distributed across the surface. I could really feel myself sinking into the latex core, which provided some satisfying pressure relief to my lumbar region. As I rolled around, I found it easy to change positions and definitely felt more “on top” of the bed than “in” it.
Edge Support – Scooting as close to the side as I could, I began to detect some deep compression through the soft foam layers. While I didn’t necessarily feel as though I’d roll out of the bed, I can’t say I felt very supported either. This poor edge support could spell trouble for couples who need to use the entire surface area of the mattress.
Side – Turning onto my side, I continued to feel some quality relief from the Roma. Side sleepers tend to prefer softer beds as they do a better job of cushioning the shoulders and hips, and the gentle latex here definitely fit the bill. I’d suggest that strict side sleepers keep this bed in the “Medium” orientation as the “Firm” will probably be too hard.
Stomach – While the “Medium” works great for side sleepers, stomach sleepers will want to opt for the “Firm” side. I could feel my hips sinking out of line with my shoulders in this position, which is not an ideal feel for strict stomach sleepers who will want more of an even spinal alignment.
MOTION TRANSFER
If you sleep with a bed mate and are thinking of buying a new bed, you’ll want to pay attention to its motion transfer, or the amount of disturbance likely to be felt from one side of the mattress to the other.
To illustrate this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 lb. steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and measured the disturbance it caused: the bigger the lines, the bigger the disturbance.
FYI: Each drop is meant to symbolize a different movement you’re likely to experience in bed, from tossing and turning (4”) to getting out of bed (8”) all the way to full on jumping (12”).
As you can see in the graphic, the Roma had very high motion transfer results, which means you’re likely to feel your partner’s every toss and turn in the night. This isn’t that surprising given the bounce of the latex, but is still something for couples to note.
SINKAGE TEST
And last but not least, let’s take a look at sinkage. This test will let you know whether you’re going to feel like you’re sinking “into” the mattress or lying “on top” of it.
To visualize this, I placed four balls of varying sizes and densities (a 6 lb medicine ball, a 10 lb steel ball, a 50 lb medicine ball, and a 100 lb medicine ball) on the mattress and measured how much they compressed the surface.
The variations in size, weight and density are meant to simulate different body parts and different sized sleepers.
- 6 lb medicine ball: 1 inch of sinkage.
- 10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.
- 50 lb medicine ball: 4 inches of sinkage.
- 100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.
These are pretty average results consistent with other all-foam beds I’ve tested. What this tells me is that you’re likely to sink into the latex core for pressure relief, but not so drastically that you’ll feel stuck in the structure.

IS THE ROMA MATTRESS RIGHT FOR YOU?
Made entirely from all-natural materials, the Sleep EZ Roma mattress is ideal for eco-friendly sleepers!
Now that we’ve taken a closer look at the Roma mattress, I want to highlight some of its biggest pros and cons:
PROS
- One of my favorite things about the bed is that it’s built entirely of all-natural materials, which could make it a great fit for eco-friendly sleepers.
- It’s also got some fantastic bounce thanks to its latex construction.
- And finally, the Roma is going to sleep cool, so could be a solid pick for anyone who tends to overheat in the night.
CONS
- Given its mediocre edge support and motion transfer results, I wouldn’t recommend this bed for couples.
- I’d also say that if you’re in need of deep body contouring, the Roma is not going to be the mattress for you.
