Amazon is a popular online go-to for its home goods, sports equipment, books, and well—just about everything. AmazonBasics, the company’s home line, offers a wide range of items at relatively low cost points making it into one of the biggest superstores in the game. And its latest item? The new AmazonBasics mattress, an all-foam model advertised as providing a luxurious feel at an affordable price.
But is this actually true? Amazon may be one of the most well-known companies on the planet, but I won’t know if its new bed is worth the hype until I test it out for myself. So, let’s jump in and see what this bed’s all about!

AmazonBasics Mattress Sleepopolis Score
What Is the AmazonBasics Mattress Made Of?
The AmazonBasics is a hybrid mattress with gel-infused memory foam and a coil support system. Let’s take a closer look at it, layer by layer.
Cover – The AmazonBasics mattress features a 1.5” quilted top that’s cool to the touch and super soft. When testing this mattress, I immediately noticed how cool the cover felt on my back. I could see this bed being a good option for hot sleepers.
Comfort Layer – The comfort layer features 2” of gel-infused memory foam to help lower the temperature even more. After lying on the mattress for a few minutes, I could feel myself sink into the layers just enough to enjoy the bed’s body contouring benefits. I think this mattress could be a good option for most side sleepers.
Transition Layer – Next is the transition layer, which consists of 2” of foam to shift pressure between the comfort layer and the support layer at the bottom.
Support Layer – Finally, the 6” foundational layer of the AmazonBasics mattress features over 900 individually wrapped spring coils and .75” of foam to improve the bed’s durability and support.
AmazonBasics Mattress Firmness
Before I dig into the firmness and feel of the AmazonBasics, it’s important to note that firmness is subjective. A mattress will feel firmer or softer to different sleepers depending on their body weight, shape, and preferred sleeping position.
To better understand how firm the AmazonBasics mattress feels, I invited a colleague to try it out and give it a firmness rating between 1 and 10. For reference, the industry standard is 6.5 out of 10, or medium-firm.
The AmazonBasics mattress has a medium-firm feel. When I tested the AmazonBasics, I felt it had a nice blend of comfort and support. My body remained lifted and supported the entire time, and I noticed good pressure relief around the lower lumbar area. Plus, the cooling cover was pleasant to lie on and kept me nice and chilly the entire time.
My colleague, a stomach sleeper, felt super supported on this bed. He noted that his body sank in slightly after lying down on it for a few minutes, but his spine remained aligned in a neutral position.

Is the AmazonBasics a Good Mattress for Light Sleepers (Under 130 pounds)?
- Light Back Sleepers – Lightweight sleepers may find that the AmazonBasics mattress is on the firmer side for them. I recommend this bed to lightweight back sleepers who prefer a firmer mattress.
- Light Side Sleepers – I would not recommend the AmazonBasics mattress to these sleepers. Lightweight side sleepers will want to look for a softer mattress with better body contouring.
- Light Stomach Sleepers – Light stomach sleepers should have no trouble sleeping on the AmazonBasics mattress. The pocketed coils should provide ample support and keep their spines aligned as they sleep.
Is the AmazonBasics a Good Mattress for Average Weight Sleepers (130–250 pounds)?
- Average Weight Back Sleepers – This bed should work fabulously for most average weight back sleepers. The AmazonBasics offers plenty of support around the lower lumbar area, which should help relieve tension and back pain.
- Average Weight Side Sleepers – This bed should work for most side sleepers. However, strict side sleepers with sensitive joints may prefer a bed that offers more body cushioning and better body contouring.
- Average Weight Stomach Sleepers – This bed is a good option for average weight stomach sleepers. The pocketed coils should give them plenty of support and keep their spines aligned through the night.
Is the AmazonBasics a Good Mattress for Heavy Sleepers (over 250 pounds)?
- Heavy Back Sleepers – The AmazonBasics mattress should work for most heavier sleepers in all sleeping positions. These sleepers will sink more into the bed, but the coils should keep them supported.
- Heavy Side Sleepers – See above.
- Heavy Stomach Sleepers – See above.
AmazonBasics Mattress Performance
Now that we’re done talking about the firmness and feel of the AmazonBasics mattress, let’s dive into some of the other tests I performed on it.
See how the AmazonBasics performs in areas such as motion transfer, cooling, and more below.
Motion Transfer
I test motion transfer to measure how much movement you will likely detect from one side of the bed to the other. If you sleep with a pet or have a partner who tends to toss and turn throughout the night, you’ll want a bed that can effectively isolate motion. Prioritizing low motion transfer, or what we also call good motion isolation, can help you sleep soundly, no matter who’s rolling around next to you.
Human Test
The first test is simple enough. For this human test, I lie on the mattress with a colleague, switch between different sleeping positions, and see how much they feel me roll around. We take turns moving around on the bed while the other lies still to estimate how much motion someone might detect while sleeping with a partner.
The AmazonBasics passed the first test. We could barely feel each other get in and out of bed, and while we could detect some of each other’s movements as we switched between sleeping positions, it wasn’t enough to disturb the person on the opposite side of the bed.
Water Test
For this test, my colleague and I place a full glass of water on the mattress and see how much the liquid moves around with us. If the water has zero to little movement, it’s a safe bet that the mattress has low motion transfer, which is what you want to see.
We didn’t see much movement in the glass when getting in and out of bed. However, I noticed the liquid move around more as my colleague switched between sleeping positions.
Seismometer Test
The seismometer test involves dropping a 10-pound steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches, and 12 inches, then measuring the disturbance it causes. In this case, the bigger the lines on the graph, the bigger the disturbance and the higher the motion transfer.
As you can see in the graphic above, the motion carries a little bit from the impact site to the other side of the mattress. These results are typical for most hybrid beds because of the coils in their construction.
Responsiveness
Responsiveness refers to how quickly a mattress goes back to its original shape after pressure has been applied. We test each mattress’s responsiveness by pressing down on its top layer, removing our hand, and seeing how quickly the surface returns to its original shape. Memory foam usually has a low response to pressure, while hybrid mattresses with coils tend to have a high response to pressure.
The AmazonBasics mattress is super bouncy and responsive, which means it is super easy to switch between different sleeping positions. The cooling cover is a little slick and makes it even easier to change between sleeping positions. I would recommend this mattress to combination sleepers in a heartbeat.
Cooling
Many factors go into how cool a mattress feels. The materials inside the mattress largely contribute to whether it traps heat or releases it. The AmazonBasics is a hybrid mattress with gel-infused foams and a cooling cover, meaning it should keep you cool throughout the night.
I tested the AmazonBasics with our trusty thermal gun. A thermal gun is a device that uses color-coded imaging to measure how much and how quickly a mattress heats up when someone lies down on it.
If it heats more than 15 degrees Fahrenheit, I consider it to have poor cooling capabilities. 10 to 15 degrees indicates decent cooling, 5 to 10 degrees indicates good cooling, and less than 5 degrees indicates excellent cooling.
After my colleague and I took turns laying on the AmazonBasics for a few minutes, I saw the temperature only go up about 4 degrees, meaning it should keep most sleepers cool at night.
Edge Support
I also tested the edge support on the AmazonBasics. Edge support measures whether you can sleep on the edge of the bed without feeling the side of the mattress collapsing under your weight. It can also help you determine its durability and whether it may sag over time.
When sitting and laying on the edge of the bed, I barely noticed any sinkage and felt supported the entire time. I felt the most sinkage while sitting on the corner of the bed. I also thought the corner was a bit slippery due to the cooling cover, but this should not be an issue after putting sheets on the bed.
When I measured the sinkage with a yardstick, the layers sank only 1 inch and a half when applying weight to the edge.
This bed is a good option for couples who need to use the entire surface area of the bed. However, I still would not recommend this mattress for folks with mobility issues. These sleepers will want to find something with less sinkage so that when they press down on the corner of the mattress to stand up, they can do so easily.
AmazonBasics Mattress Performance For Couples
The AmazonBasics could be a decent option for couples, with one exception. The AmazonBasics mattress is a bouncy hybrid bed with plenty of edge support for couples who switch between different sleeping positions and prefer to use the entire surface area of the bed.
Unfortunately, the motion isolation on this bed may not be good enough for individuals who easily wake up throughout the night. These couples might need a memory foam mattress to trap the motion better.

After taking the AmazonBasics for a spin, I can safely say that this budget mattress packs a lot of punch for its price. Here’s who I would recommend the AmazonBasics mattress to and who I think should look elsewhere.
Who I Recommend the AmazonBasics Mattress For
- This mattress is a slam dunk for combination sleepers. These sleepers should have no issues switching between different sleeping positions throughout the night, thanks to the bed’s coil base and slick cooling cover.
- I would recommend this mattress to folks with back pain. This mattress should provide these sleepers ample support around the lower lumbar area and alleviate tension and pain at night.
- The AmazonBasics is an excellent choice for hot sleepers. The gel-infused memory foams, cooling cover, and pocketed coils do a wonderful job of turning down the heat.
Who I Don’t Recommend the AmazonBasics Mattress For
- Couples who easily wake at night will need a mattress with better motion isolation. These sleepers are better off going for one of our best memory foam mattresses.
- This mattress is likely too firm for lightweight side sleepers, especially those with sensitive joints.

AmazonBasics Mattress Vs
Now that you have a sense of how you might interact with this mattress, let’s compare it side-by-side with two of its biggest competitors on the market: Lucid and Tuft & Needle. All three mattresses are value all-foam buys, so honing in on their differences can help determine which will fit your sleeping needs best.
Lucid
Let’s start with the 10” Lucid mattress. Its gel and polyfoam layers work together to provide excellent support with a medium-firm feel.
- Lucid’s top layer of cooling gel did a better job of regulating body temperature than the memory foam of the AmazonBasics mattress.
- The Lucid mattress is also a lot firmer than the AmazonBasics mattress, which makes for an overall more supportive vibe.
- In contrast to the AmazonBasics mattress, the Lucid mattress includes a special layer of edge support that maximizes the usable surface area of the bed.
Tuft & Needle
The Tuft & Needle’s straightforward construction contains just two layers of foam to provide a gentle, pressure-relieving feel.
- Tuft & Needle’s responsive poly foam layers make it a better fit for combo sleepers, who will likely benefit from its bouncy support.
- This mattress also costs a bit more than the AmazonBasics ($595 vs. $230 for a Queen), but is still on the low end when compared to other big names like Nectar and Casper.
- The Tuft & Needle mattress averages at a 7/10 on the firmness scale, offering more firmness than the AmazonBasics mattress.
Our Review Process
At Sleepopolis, our team of Certified Sleep Science Coaches personally test each mattress. We start by unboxing the mattress to figure out how difficult (or easy) it is to get the mattress from the box to the bed. Then, we spend time laying on the bed in different positions, taking time to assess it on our backs, stomachs, and sides. Next, we perform our Sleepopolis tests, using specialized tools to measure qualities like motion transfer, bounce, and pressure relief. Our last step is to open up the mattress and take a look at each layer. These steps allow us to give our final verdict on the mattress.
