Is Brooklyn Bedding Bloom Hybrid a Good Mattress for You?
Brooklyn Bedding is a USA-based bed-in–a-box company that aims to create affordable luxury mattresses. The company uses end-to-end manufacturing, which means everything is done in-house. So Brooklyn Bedding has great control over its quality, materials, and cost. The Bloom Hybrid is no exception to this, and I think it’s a great option for a lot of sleepers.
Who I recommend Brooklyn Bedding Bloom Hybrid mattress for
- Combination sleepers should appreciate the responsive feel of this bed. It should be easy to change positions on at night.
- If you’re a hot sleeper, the Bloom is a great option for you. Its latex layer dissipates body heat, and its innerspring coils promote plenty of airflow throughout the bed.
- If you’re looking for an organic or natural mattress the Bloom is a good choice. It’s made with natural latex, Joma wool, organic cotton, and recycled coils. You can also take a look at our best natural organic mattress list to see a few other eco-friendly options.
Who I don’t recommend Brooklyn Bedding Bloom Hybrid mattress for
- If you sleep with a restless partner the Bloom might not be the best fit for you. It’s bouncy, so you’ll feel a partner moving on the opposite side of the bed. If that’s a concern for you, check out one of our best mattresses for couples instead.
- Side sleepers who deal with shoulder or hip pain might prefer one of our best memory foam mattresses.
- Similarly, if you’re looking for plush sinkage and a lot of body-contouring the Bloom won’t be a good fit for you.
How Firm is the Brooklyn Bedding Bloom Hybrid Mattress?
Think the Bloom might be the new mattress for you? Keep reading to learn more about this bed’s firmness. Remember, firmness is subjective, and every sleeper will experience a mattress differently depending on their body weight and preferred sleeping position. I had a few coworkers test out the Bloom with me, so the score below is an average of all our perceived firmness levels.
We gave the Bloom a 7 out of 10 on the mattress firmness scale. For reference, 6.5 out of 10 is the industry standard for medium firmness. That means this is a slightly firm mattress. If you’re on the heavier side, you might experience the Bloom as more medium-firm.
The combination of latex and coils definitely contribute to this firmer feel, which makes this mattress a good choice for back sleepers and combination sleepers. I definitely felt like I was lying “on top” of the mattress, rather than “in” it, as you might with a memory foam bed.
Side sleepers who don’t mind a firmer feel could also like the Bloom. But if you’re a strict side sleeper who likes a plush feel I don’t think this bed is for you. Lightweight stomach sleepers or sleepers who only spend part of the night on their stomachs might also like the Bloom.

To give you a more objective view of the Bloom’s performance, I looked at a few more important factors besides firmness, including how the mattress works for different sleeping positions, pain relief, and how it works for couples.
Testing the Brooklyn Bedding Bloom Hybrid Mattress in Different Sleeping Positions
The way you experience a mattress can change a lot depending on your sleeping position and body type. If you are lighter, you won’t sink into a mattress very deeply, whereas if you’re heavier, you may sink in quite a lot. Let’s go over how different people might feel sleeping on the Bloom.
Is the Brooklyn Bedding Bloom Hybrid a Good Mattress for Light Sleepers (Under 130 pounds)?
- Light Back Sleepers – Light back sleepers should feel pretty comfortable on the Bloom, especially if you like the feel of a firmer mattress. The mattress offers good support for the lower back, as well as pressure relief when lying on the back.
- Light Side Sleepers – Light side sleepers might find the Bloom to be too firm. If you like firm mattresses, it could work. But overall, I’d recommend side sleepers opt for a more plush mattress.
- Light Stomach Sleepers – If you’re a light stomach sleeper, I think you’ll like the Bloom. You won’t sink deeply into the bed, and your hips should stay elevated while you sleep.
Is the Brooklyn Bedding Bloom Hybrid a Good Mattress for Average Weight Sleepers (130 – 250 pounds)?
- Average Weight Back Sleepers – I think average weight back sleepers will definitely like the Bloom. This mattress should offer a really solid balance of pressure relief and support to keep back sleepers comfortable.
- Average Weight Side Sleepers – Like light side sleepers, this mattress could work for average weight side sleepers who like a firm mattress. But generally, I’d say it’s going to be too firm and not offer enough pressure relief for side sleepers.
- Average Weight Stomach Sleepers – If you’re a strict stomach sleeper, the Bloom may not be quite firm enough to support you and keep your hips elevated properly. But if you are a combination sleeper who spends part of the night on your stomach, the Bloom may work.
Is the Brooklyn Bedding Bloom Hybrid a Good Mattress for Heavy Sleepers (over 250 pounds)?
- Heavy Back Sleepers – The Bloom is a great option for heavy back sleepers. The durable latex and coils will offer lots of support, but you should still get good pressure relief and be comfortable lying on your back.
- Heavy Side Sleepers – This bed could work for heavy sleepers who only sleep on their side part of the night, but if you are a strict side sleeper, I think a mattress that offers better contouring and pressure relief will protect your shoulders and hips from pain.
- Heavy Stomach Sleepers – Similar to average weight stomach sleepers, I wouldn’t recommend the Bloom to heavy people who sleep strictly on their stomach. Something a little firmer and even more supportive will keep the hips elevated, preventing lower back pain.Brooklyn Bedding does make a mattress specifically designed for heavy sleepers, the Brooklyn Bedding Titan, which I think would be a better fit for these sleepers.
Brooklyn Bedding Bloom Hybrid Mattress Pain Relief Performance
Pressure relief is an important component of overall feel. To find out where pressure points are likely to form when you’re on the Brooklyn Bedding Bloom Hybrid mattress, I placed a pressure map on top of the mattress and lay down on my back, side, and stomach.
In the image below, you will see low pressure represented in blue to green and high pressure in yellow to red.
Back Pain – That blue across the board means my weight was evenly distributed, and I didn’t feel any specific pressure points forming. Good news for back sleepers! They should be very comfortable on the Bloom. Side sleepers should also get good alignment, helping to prevent back pain. However, stomach sleepers will probably experience some back pain, due to hips sinking.
Shoulder Pain – When I rolled onto my side, there was a little green on the map. This doesn’t worry me that much, and I personally felt quite comfortable on my side, but if you have sensitive shoulders, you may feel a little pressure buildup. In that case, I’d recommend a more plush, soft mattress.
On my stomach, I did have some pressure buildup in my upper body, which could contribute to shoulder pain over time. But on my back, my shoulders felt very comfortable and there was no pressure buildup shown on the map.
Hip Pain – I saw some green in my hips when I was lying on my side, showing a small amount of pressure buildup. As with shoulders, it didn’t bother me much, but if you have more sensitive joints, I would opt for something softer.
For back sleepers, their hips should feel nice and supported. However, for stomach sleepers, the hips probably won’t have much pressure buildup, but they may start to sink in, which will cause your spine to be misaligned.
Brooklyn Bedding Bloom Hybrid Mattress Performance for Couples
When picking a mattress to share with a partner, there are several things to consider. I’m going to take a look at how the Bloom transfers motion, if it’s a good mattress for sex, its cooling capabilities, and its edge support, to determine if this is a good bed for couples.
Motion Transfer
This bed has a really good bounce. Combination sleepers should really enjoy its buoyant feel! But, increased mobility might also mean decreased motion isolation. Motion isolation is a measure of how much motion travels from one side of the mattress to the other. A mattress with poor motion isolation will make it easy to feel disturbed by a bedmate’s tossing and turning.
To test the Bloom’s motion isolating capabilities, I dropped a 10-pound steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches, and 12 inches, and measured the disturbance it caused. Take a look at the chart below to see the results.
Like most latex hybrid models, the Bloom does not isolate motion particularly well. If you’re a light sleeper and sleep with a partner, you may want to avoid the Bloom.
Sex
The best mattress for sex is usually one that’s responsive and has lots of bounce, but still isolates motion well. The responsiveness of the Bloom is good, thanks to the coils and latex, so it’s easy to move around on. The Bloom’s motion isolation isn’t the strongest, so I’d say this is a solid, middle tier bed for sex.
Cooling
Sharing a bed can sometimes lead to overheating, which is why cooling capabilities are key for couples when mattress shopping. The latex used in the construction of the Bloom will help to keep you cool, as latex is a naturally cooling material. The wool and cotton used in the cover will also help with cooling, as they’ll wick away moisture. And using coils will also help with cooling, as they will promote more airflow within the mattress.
Edge Support
Edge support is a measure of whether or not the side of a mattress will collapse under your weight. As I mentioned above, the Bloom has great edge support.
The Bloom’s edges are reinforced, so you should feel very stable on the sides of this bed. High-quality edge support is a great feature for couples and heavier people, two groups that often benefit from being able to spread out over their entire sleeping surface.
What is the Brooklyn Bedding Bloom Hybrid Mattress Made Of?
This 13.25-inch mattress is made of great natural materials, including Joma wool, organic cotton, and Talalay latex. Take a look below to learn about each layer in detail.
Cover — The Bloom’s cover is made from organic cotton and quilted with organic Joma wool. The cover is breathable (thanks to wool’s temperature-regulating abilities) and moisture-wicking. It also offers some nice initial pressure relief.
Comfort Layer —The Bloom’s top layer is made of Oeko-Tex class Talalay latex. This natural material is naturally buoyant and cooling. It’s what gives the mattress its bouncy feel.
Support Layer — Underneath the latex foam are individually wrapped pocketed coils. These coils provide overall support to the mattress and encourage breathability throughout the structure.
Base Layer — The bottom of this bed is made of high-density foam. It gives the coils something to bounce off of and contributes to the overall durability of the bed.
Brooklyn Bedding Bloom Hybrid Mattress Unboxing and Off-Gassing
The Brooklyn Bedding Bloom Hybrid is a bed-in–a-box, so it will arrive at your house compressed and rolled into a box. To set it up, simply open the box, remove the mattress, roll it out onto your desired base, and cut off the packaging. Be sure to grab a friend, as the box will be pretty heavy.
After you unbox the mattress, it will start to decompress and off-gas, meaning that gasses trapped during the compression process will start to release. I’d recommend leaving the mattress in a well-ventilated area for at least 24 hours to let it off-gas before sleeping on it.
My Final Thoughts about Brooklyn Bedding Bloom Hybrid Mattress
Now that we’ve gone over the Bloom in detail, I want to leave you with a few of my favorite and least things about this hybrid mattress. Hopefully, this will help you decide if the Bloom is the right new mattress for you.
My favorite things about Brooklyn Bedding Bloom Hybrid mattress
My favorite thing about the Bloom mattress is its latex construction! The latex build means this bed is durable, cooling, and natural. Almost any sleeper should enjoy those features in a bed. I also really appreciate the Bloom’s price point. This is one of the more affordable latex mattresses I’ve reviewed. It’s not a cheap mattress, but if you’re looking for a high-quality latex mattress that won’t break the bank I’d take a look at the Bloom.
My Brooklyn Bedding Bloom Hybrid mattress complaints
My main complaint about the Bloom is that it does not isolate motion well. You’ll be easily disturbed by a restless partner on this bed. So if that’s a concern for you I’d suggest opting for a different mattress. Brooklyn Bedding offers a few mattress models that could work for couples, you can find more info about those below.
Similarly, if you don’t like the feel of latex you won’t like this mattress. You sink quickly through the wool quilting onto the latex layer of this bed, so if you don’t like feeling a lot of lift from your bed you might not feel comfortable on the Bloom.
