Best Cheap Mattresses of 2024

A new mattress can run anywhere between $300 and $3,000 for a queen size, and while it’s tempting to go with the cheapest option, it’s also important to find a bed whose materials will promote healthier sleep.

“Remember to balance your budget with the mattress quality and features that matter to you,” says Sleepopolis Chief Medical Advisor Dr. Raj Dasgupta. “Look for sales and financing options if available.”

You can also peruse my best affordable mattress list below. I‘ll go over mattress pricing, how more expensive options differ from lower-cost options, and how to decide which model is right for you and your wallet. Price-wise, I only included beds that came in at $1,000 or under for a queen size after discounts, but still performed well on many of our tests (more on that in the Buying Guide at the bottom of this page). And some of these best budget mattresses are $1,000 or under for a queen size before any discounts are applied. Sleepopolis has helped 12,544 people find a mattress in 2024 alone, so hopefully there’s something here for you.

My Top Pick for the Best Cheap Mattress

I chose the Bear is my top pick for the best affordable mattresses because of the quality of its foams, which have proven to be durable and supportive, despite the bed’s relatively low cost.

What I Look For In The Best Cheap Mattresses

Affordability

Affordability is important for all buyers, but I took special care in this roundup to find the best affordable mattresses. I considered the price of each mattress (usually staying under $1,000 for a queen size after discounts) without compromising comfort, support, or durability. So you can be sure you’re staying within your budget while still getting an excellent mattress.

Material Quality

Even though I paid special attention to the price of each mattress in this roundup, I made sure to include options with some of the best materials and added bells and whistles for cooling, edge support, and more. This means that you can shop within your budget while still finding a high-quality mattress.

Return Policy and Warranty

Part of shopping within a budget means considering the return policy and warranty of whatever it is you’re buying. That’s why I paid attention to the return and warranty policies of each mattress in this roundup. You can have piece of mind knowing you can return or replace your mattress if you need to.

Even though it’s made entirely of foam, the Bear has a firm, supportive feel that should be sturdy enough for back sleepers and stomach sleepers alike. Additionally, combination sleepers should be able to easily move around on its surface. You can also pay extra for a Celliant cover that may help with cooling and muscle recovery. Learn more in our video review.

What our tester says:

“I found the double poly foam construction produced a firm, supportive feel. Though you’re likely to sink into its top layer of memory foam, this sinkage is somewhat curbed by the taut poly foam transition layer. This means most folks are going to be positioned more “on top” of the structure than “in” it.” – Nichole Mondshein, lead reviewer and mattress tester

Expert Opinion

I chose Bear as my best overall pick because of how unique it is as a brand. The company was actually founded as a means of catering to athletes and active sleepers in general. That’s why the brand’s flagship mattress comes outfitted with firm foams that support heavy musculature, as well as a cover made of Celliant (note: the Celliant cover comes at an extra charge). This is a soft and breathable material is designed to absorb your body’s energy, then redirect it back to you to assist with recovery and blood flow. While we haven’t independently verified this claim in our testing lab, there have been 10 peer-reviewed studies to back it up. Even without the the Celliant cover, I find the Bear to be an excellent choice for anyone with an active lifestyle due to its ability to support the sleeper’s musculature. You can often get a queen at $998 before discounts. This includes a 120-night trial and a lifetime warranty.

How the Bear Performed In Testing

Motion Isolation 4/5

When I tested out the Bear’s motion transfer, it was very low. So if you sleep with a partner, you shouldn’t be woken up by each other’s movements. When you pair that with the bed’s cooling capabilities, it’s one of the best mattresses for couples.

Support 3.5/5

Even though the Bear is made entirely of foam, it has a high-density layer that’s supportive enough to help keep back sleepers’ spines in a neutral alignment — a key to healthy and restful sleep. I will say that, even though I found the Bear to be supportive for an all-foam bed, sleepers wanting an exceptional amount of support should seek out a mattress with innerspring coils in its construction.

Cooling 4/5

An additional bonus of Celliant is that it helps stave off heat after a long workout. Additionally, the memory foam comfort layer contributes to cooling with an infusion of graphite gel. This makes the Bear a good match for hot sleepers. It’s likely to sleep cooler than many other foam mattresses out there.

Edge Support 3/5

Foam beds don’t always have the best edge support, and the Bear is no different. When I sat and laid on the edge of the mattress, I felt a lot of sinkage and didn’t feel supported. This is something to consider if you sleep near the outer perimeter of your mattress.

Pressure Relief 4/5

To test a mattress’s pressure-relieving abilities, I roll a specialized mat across its surface. I lie down on the mat, and it uses color-coded thermal imaging to show how much pressure is being put on my body. We call this graphic a “pressure map.”

On the Bear, the graphic was almost entirely blue in both the back-sleeping and side-sleeping position. This tells me that it does a good job relieving pressure. However, I should note that side sleeping isn’t the most comfortable position on this bed.

What Our Tester Says

“First and foremost, I’d recommend the Bear to back sleepers in need of a firm bed. Also, the bed is designed for athletic recovery, so it could be good for sleepers with active lifestyles.”

“While the Bear isn’t necessarily bouncy by nature, it is easy to change positions on (and not all foam mattresses are). This means it should be good for sex and combination sleeping.”

Nichole Mondshein, lead reviewer and staff writer

What Customers Say

The reviews on Bear’s website call out its firmness as a positive, and several folks have pointed out that the supportive foams have made it a great mattress for teenagers whose bodies are still growing. A lot of folks also love that the mattress was made without fiberglass.

“After weeks of researching memory foam mattresses online, I decided to chat with a Bear representative and boy, am I glad I did! This mattress is so completely comfortable and lightweight and sleek, it’s remarkable how affordable it was. My husband and I both love this mattress- we’re both sleeping better on our new Bear! Also of note with this company- I have not received this level of customer service in a very long time! We’ve recommended Bear to all of our family and friends!”

The Nectar Premier delivers on classic memory foam: it’s soft, contouring, and provides a slow-sinking feel. Still, it provides solid support for most light to average weight sleepers. The cushioning memory foam allows for plenty of pressure relief on pain points, like shoulders and hips. Side sleepers especially should enjoy the pressure relief. Plus, a lengthy trial period, lifetime warranty, and affordable price make the Nectar a reassuring choice for many. Watch our video review to learn more.

What our tester says:

“I think memory foam lovers should be happy on the Nectar. This bed has a classic memory foam feel, so there’s lots of sinkage, contouring, and pressure relief. This can be great for anyone with shoulder pain or hip pain since it gives them cushioning at sensitive pressure points.” – Nichole Mondshein, lead reviewer and staff writer

Expert Opinion

When it comes to mattresses that don’t break the bank, my top pick for side sleepers is the all-foam Nectar Premier. When testing it, I gave it a 6 out of 10 on the mattress firmness scale — slightly softer than medium firm. It has a thick layer of soft memory foam up top that provides a ton of contouring and pressure relief at the shoulders and hips (the areas where side sleepers put the most pressure). Additionally, there’s a support layer of firmer foam for stability. When lying on the Nectar Premier, I get some good sinkage, but never feel like I’m going to fall too far into its layers. In terms of cost, you can usually find a queen size for just under $1,000 after discounts. All models include a 365-night trial and forever warranty.

How the Nectar Premier Performed In Testing

Motion Isolation 4.5/5

I find the Nectar Premier to be a solid choice for couples because of how good it is at isolating motion. I tested out the bed’s motion transfer by dropping a 10-pound steel ball onto the surface from various heights, then measuring the vibrations with a seismometer. There wasn’t a lot of movement, which tells me that if you sleep with a partner, you’re unlikely to feel each other tossing and turning at night.

Support 4.5/5

Despite its softness, I never felt like I was sinking too far into the Nectar Premier. My spine felt neutrally aligned the entire time.

Cooling 4.5/5

The Nectar Premier manages to stay cool, which is rare for an all-foam mattress. When I used a thermal gun to measure the temperature increase after 5 minutes of me lying down on the bed, it only rose by 4.3 degrees. This indicates excellent cooling, and makes the Nectar Premier a smart choice for hot sleepers.

Edge Support 4/5

I think the Nectar Premier has solid edge support for an all-foam bed. Its layers only sank 2 inches when I laid on the edge of the mattress, although there was more sinkage when I sat on the corner. Most sleepers should feel secure, but if edge support is especially important to you, you may want to consider an innerspring or hybrid mattress.

Pressure Relief 4.5/5

If you experience hip pain, you might be soothed by the Nectar. When I tested out the mattress with our pressure map, there was little to no pressure at the hips in all three sleeping positions. The same goes for back pain, too.

What Our Tester Says

“After spending some time on the bed, I felt more cradled by it than lifted up by it. This deep sinkage and body contouring could be nice for side sleepers or folks who like a pressure-relieving feel.”

“Overall, I think this should be a fantastic mattress for side sleepers and back sleepers with back pain and hip pain.”

Nichole Mondshein, lead reviewer and staff writer

What Customers Say

On Nectar’s website, you can find over 6,000 reviews, with many of them praising how cushioning the memory foam felt on the sleeper’s back. A common theme seems to be the bed’s deep pressure relief.

“I felt the difference immediately switching to my Nectar Premier. After the first night, my back felt so much better. I am also a side sleeper with a bad shoulder and this made side sleeping more manageable. So far, I am happy with my purchase.”

Even though it’s an all-foam mattress, we found the DreamCloud Memory Foam mattress to be firm, supportive, and responsive. This makes it the rare foam bed that’s sturdy and bouncy enough for back sleepers, stomach sleepers, and combo sleepers alike. Learn more in our DreamCloud Memory Foam video review.

What our tester says:

“I think back sleepers should find a lot to love in the DreamCloud Memory Foam mattress. It’s supportive and sturdy, but still offers some comfort from the quilted cover. Many stomach sleepers should also enjoy how the firm foams in this bed keep their hips propped up for spinal alignment.” – Amelia Jerden, senior staff writer

Expert Opinion

DreamCloud’s first bed was a luxury hybrid mattress, and the DreamCloud Memory Foam is their first all-foam option. Like its hybrid counterpart, it has a cashmere blend cover, plus an infusion of gel in its foam to assist with cooling. However, it differs from many other memory foam options out there in that it’s fairly firm. When I laid down on it, I rated it a 7.5 out of 10 on our mattress firmness scale. This makes it a good fit for back sleepers and stomach sleepers, who tend to need more firmness and support to keep their spine neutrally aligned. The best part? It’s set at a low price, considering its materials and construction. Including promotions, you can often a queen for under $1,000. At the time of this writing, a queen size is only $665 after discounts.

Note: When going to the DreamCloud website, make sure you click “memory foam” and not “hybrid” before checking out.

How the DreamCloud Memory Foam Performed In Testing

Motion Isolation 4.5/5

Memory foam is usually very good at isolating motion, even on a firmer mattress like the DreamCloud. I saw very low vibrations during the seismometer test, so if you sleep with a partner, you’re unlikely to feel each other tossing and turning at night.

Support 4/5

I felt sufficiently supported while lying down on the DreamCloud Memory Foam. While it’s not quite as supportive as the hybrid version, I still received a nice left and a neutral spinal alignment.

Cooling 4/5

Traditional memory foam often gets a bad rep, as it tends to trap body heat and lead to sweating. Plus, some brands use low-quality foam, which results in premature sagging. With the DreamCloud Memory Foam, though, you’ll get a cooling, high-quality memory foam bed with all of the regular benefits. During the thermal gun test, the temperature only rose by about 7 degrees, indicating good cooling abilities.

Edge Support 5/5

For a memory foam mattress, the DreamCloud has exceptional edge support. I was able to both sit and lie on the edge of the bed with almost no sinkage to the mattress’s layers. You should be able to spread out and use the entire surface of the bed without feeling like you’re going to fall off.

Pressure Relief 4.5/5

During our pressure map test, there was very little pressure buildup on the DreamCloud Memory Foam while back sleeping. The graphic was almost entirely blue. I did see a little bit of pressure buildup while side sleeping, but because of its firmness, I don’t recommend the mattress for that position anyway.

What Our Tester Says

“The DreamCloud Memory Foam is a bed-in-a-box memory foam mattress with a firm feel that I think is well-suited for light to average weight stomach and back sleepers.”

“Couples should like this bed too, as it scored well in our motion isolation test, is responsive enough for sex, sleeps cool, and has excellent edge support.”

Amelia Jerden, senior staff writer

What Customers Say

Being one of the brand’s newer models, the DreamCloud Memory Foam doesn’t have as many reviews as the original hybrid version. But the ones that are there praise the bed’s comfort, as well as its elegant appearance.

“I bought a Tempur-Pedic mattress a few years ago. I liked it but having to buy a second place for work and getting this mattress I could kick myself for spending the money I spent on that mattress. This mattress is much better in my opinion and far exceeded my expectations for the price I spent. I paid less than half for this bed frame and mattress than I did on the other mattress without the frame.”

The Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid mattress combines a foam comfort layer and sturdy coils. This combination of materials makes it bouncy and easy to move around on. It comes in three firmness levels, and we recommend the Medium model for most back sleepers. It’s a great choice for shoppers who are looking for a new mattress on a budget. For more information, check out our video review.

What our tester says:

“Given that the Signature Hybrid has some excellent bounce, I’d highly recommend this mattress for combination sleepers who often change positions multiple times throughout the night. I also think the Signature Hybrid could be a great fit for couples. You shouldn’t be overly disturbed by a restless partner on this bed, and it has nice, firm edge support.” – Nichole Mondshein, lead reviewer and staff writer

Expert Opinion

Hybrid mattresses became popular for bringing sleepers the desired combination of pressure relief and support. I think the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid is a classic example of a bed that hits this sweet spot. When testing it out, I sank just a little bit into the upper layers of foam, but never too far. The support layer of individually wrapped coils propped us up and treated us to some bounciness. Another major perk is that the Signature Hybrid is offered in a Soft, Medium, and a Firm model. So, you can pick the firmness level that works best for your needs. It’s currently priced at $1,332 for a queen before discounts (usually under $1,000 after discounts) and includes a 120-night trial and a 10-year warranty.

How the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid Performed In Testing

Motion Isolation 3.5/5

The motion-isolating abilities of the Signature Hybrid are just average. When I laid down with my partner, we could both feel each other’s movements, plus the seismometer test showed some fairly high spikes. I wouldn’t recommend it to couples where at least one party is a light sleeper.

Support 4.5/5

I found the support on the Signature Hybrid to be quite strong. I never felt like I was sinking too far into the bed’s layers.

Cooling 4.5/5

The coils in this mattress help promote airflow and prevent body heat from trapping in the layers. This makes the Signature Hybrid a good choice for hot sleepers. When running it through our thermal gun test, the temperature only rose less than 8 degrees after 5 minutes of me lying down on the bed. This indicates good cooling capabilities.

Edge Support 4.5/5

I found that the mattress had nice, firm edge support. You should be able to spread out and utilize its entire surface without feeling like you’re going to fall off the bed.

Pressure Relief 4.5/5

On my back, the pressure map was almost entirely blue, indicating exceptional pressure relief. There was slightly more buildup at the shoulders while I was on my side, so I recommend that side sleepers opt for the Soft model of the Signature Hybrid.

What Our Tester Says

“While I did experience increased pressure around my hips and shoulders when laying on my side, the Signature Hybrid remains an excellent option for back sleepers and anyone seeking a true medium-firm mattress.”

“Given that the Signature Hybrid has some excellent bounce, I’d highly recommend this mattress for combination sleepers who often change positions multiple times throughout the night.”

What Customers Say

The reviews on Brooklyn Bedding’s website cover all of the brand’s various models, and praise the versatility of the company. Based on what customers say, they view the Signature Hybrid as a high-quality middle-of-the-road option — not as stripped-down and budget-friendly as the Dreamfoam Essential, but not as expensive and luxurious as the Aurora Luxe. Everything from the value price to its medium-firm feel is balanced.

“I adore my mattress! It’s firm enough to provide support for my arthritis in my lower back, but has a soft top that cradles me. It dissipates heat very well, has great edge support, and has given me my best sleep in years. Thanks Brooklyn Bedding!”

Pros of the Titan Plus
Even if they weigh under 250 pounds, back sleepers looking for a firmer feel or more support should like this mattress.
Similarly, stomach sleepers who weigh under 250 pounds should be comfortable on the Titan Plus, although it will feel a bit firmer to them than it does to heavyweight stomach sleepers.
It’s responsive, so combination sleepers should move around easily on it.
Cons of the Titan Plus
Lightweight sleepers probably won’t get any pressure relief or contouring, so they might be better off with one of the best mattresses for lightweight sleepers.
Side sleepers — even heavy ones — will need a softer mattress that has more pressure relief than the Titan Plus offers. I don’t recommend it for this sleeping position. They should look at some of our best mattresses for side sleepers instead.

The Titan Plus mattress is a durable mattress made with heavy sleepers in mind. It’s firm and features heavy-duty coils and Titanflex foam that makes it bouncy and easy to move around on. We think that heavy back sleepers and stomach sleepers should be especially comfortable. For more information on the Titan Plus, check out our video review.

What our tester says:

“I think the Titan Plus lives up to its name as a good mattress for heavier sleepers. It will offer them the deep compression support and durability they need.” – Nichole Mondshein, lead reviewer and staff writer

Expert Opinion

For an affordable and comfortable option for heavy sleepers, I always recommend the Titan Plus mattress. But because these folks put more pressure on a bed’s layers than other sleepers, I asked Paulie — a pro power lifter with a larger body type — to test it out. He felt that the three inches of foam allow for adequate pressure relief, and the sturdy coils and high-density base foam provided durable support. This isn’t surprising, as the Titan Plus was designed specifically for sleepers over 250 pounds. It’s priced at $1,249 for a queen before discounts and includes a 120-night trial and a 10-year warranty. After discounts, a queen size can often be found for a little bit under $1,000.

I should point that out that, when it comes to firmness, the Titan Plus is going to feel softer to heavy sleepers and firmer to average weight and lighter sleepers. For context, our reviewer experienced the bed as a 7.5 out of 10 on our mattress firmness scale, where Paulie felt that it was closer to a 6.5 (the industry standard for medium firm).

How the Titan Plus Performed In Testing

Motion Isolation 3.5/5

The Titan Plus showed some pretty sharp spikes during the seismometer test. While most couples should be able to sleep soundly on the bed, especially light sleepers may feel their partner tossing and turning.

Support 5/5

It’s no surprise that the Titan Plus offered exceptional support, given that it’s meant to hold up more weight and is made from highly durable materials. My spine felt completely aligned and I never felt like I was going to sink too far into the mattress, even a little bit.

Cooling 4.5/5

The tall coils of the Titan Plus allow for plenty of airflow, and when I measured the temperature increase with our thermal gun, it only rose by less than 6 degrees after I laid on the bed for 5 minutes. This confirms that the mattress is effectively cooling and will be a good fit for hot sleepers.

Edge Support 4.5/5

When I sat and laid on the edge of the Titan Plus, I didn’t feel at all like I was going to fall off. I then measured the sinkage, and the layers were only collapsing by less than 2 inches. All of this tells me that the mattress has strong edge support.

Pressure Relief 4/5

The Titan Plus doesn’t offer a lot of contouring (especially for lightweight and average weight sleepers), but it also isn’t likely to exacerbate any pressure buildup, either. The pressure map was almost entirely blue while I was in the back-sleeping position.

What Our Tester Says

“I think the Titan Plus lives up to its name as a good mattress for heavier sleepers. It will offer them the deep compression support and durability they need.”

“When sleeping on his side, [our heavier tester] felt cozy pressure relief at his shoulders, an experience I didn’t really have, as I wasn’t heavy enough to push through the Titan Plus.”

– Nichole Mondshein, lead reviewer and staff writer

What Customers Say

The Titan Plus has numerous testimonials from heavier sleepers, including a video review from a couple. Many of these reviews speak to how comfortable the mattress is for their body type, with some of them praising it as the most comfortable mattress they’ve ever slept on.

“The mattress is the most comfortable I’ve had and is exceptionally supportive for a side and stomach sleeper. I was having back issues with my old mattress, and those have gone away with this mattress. Just make sure you get help with the unpacking and setup as it’s much heavier than you think.”

Pros of the Siena
The Siena is the rare foam mattress that can accommodate stomach sleepers, who tend to put more pressure on a bed’s layers than side sleepers or back sleepers. But this mattress gets the job done, holding up stomach sleepers so that their hips are aligned with their shoulders.
We gave the Siena a 7 out of 10 on our mattress firmness scale. This stands out among memory foam mattresses, which tend to be softer.
Given the responsiveness of the foams, the Siena should be easy for combination sleepers to move around on.
Cons of the Siena
The Siena is probably going to be too firm for side sleepers.
Heavy sleepers (those over 250 pounds) of all sleeping positions should look for a more supportive mattress.

The Siena is somewhat surprising for an all-foam mattress; it’s fairly firm and is even supportive enough for stomach sleepers. Back sleepers should also be well-supported, and budget shoppers should appreciate its value price point. Learn more in our Siena video review.

What our tester says:

“The Siena has a simple, minimalistic design that gets the job done for stomach sleepers and a lot of back sleepers. I think it’s a great option for those after a firm mattress. It will keep sleepers propped up and slightly cushioned, which is especially a major win for stomach sleepers.” – Bridget Chapman, former senior product editor

Expert Opinion

Although it’s made entirely of foam, the Siena is surprisingly supportive, its layers starting off soft, then getting firmer and firmer as you get to the bottom of the bed. That means it’s an exceptionally durable memory foam mattress, and at under $500 for a queen size after discounts, a solid (and affordable) long-term investment. When I laid down on the Siena, I definitely got more of an-top-of-the-bed feeling. However, the longer I stayed on the mattress, the deeper I sank in. This push and pull resulted in a firm feel with a little bit of cushioning.

How the Siena Performed In Testing

Motion Isolation 4/5

The Siena showed promising results on our seismometer test, with low vibrations. If you sleep with a partner, you’re unlikely to feel each other moving around at night.

Support 3.5/5

I didn’t find the Siena to be the most supportive mattress in the world, but I did get a bit of a lift from the bottom layer of foundational foam. If you want an extra-supportive mattress, consider a hybrid or innerspring model.

Cooling 3.5/5

As is often the case with memory foam mattresses, I didn’t find the Siena to be all that cooling. If you’re someone who sleeps hot, take a look at some of our best cooling mattresses.

Edge Support 4/5

I was surprised to find that the Siena had pretty strong edge support for an all-foam mattress. There was a little bit of sinkage on the corner, but the side of the bed held firm. You should be able to spread out and use the whole surface of the mattress with little issue.

Pressure Relief 4/5

During my pressure map test, the Siena showed almost no pressure buildup in the back-sleeping position, but a little bit of yellow and red in the side-sleeping position. But since I don’t recommend this mattress for side sleepers anyway, I still gave it a fairly high score in this category.

On Siena’s website, there are nearly 1,200 reviews, with many customers commenting on how good the mattress felt on their back. However, a few folks did point out that, because of the firmness, it might take a few nights to get used to the bed. So give yourself a little time to break it in.

“I’m a stomach sleeper, so that often causes some discomfort with certain mattresses. But this one provides the perfect amount of support in all the right places. I’ve never slept better or more soundly until I bought this one. I couldn’t be happier. I’d definitely recommend it to anyone in the market for a new mattress.”

While it’s an all-foam mattress on the softer end of the firmness scale, the Leesa should still offer enough support for a neutral spinal alignment, which is good news for back sleepers. Some side sleepers will also get the contouring they need at the shoulders and hips. Learn more in our Leesa video review.

What our tester says:

“I think the Leesa is a great choice for back sleepers and should give them the comfort and support they desire. It could also work for some combination sleepers, as it’s bouncy enough to easily move around on.” – Bridget Chapman, former senior product editor

Expert Opinion

While I believe that all of the mattresses on this list are a good value, the Leesa Original is particularly fantastic for those who rest on their backs. In fact, this mattress is marketed to have the “Goldilocks” feel that’s most recommended for back sleepers, with a balance of comfort and support that comes from its soft memory foam comfort layer and extra-durable base foam. While testing, I noticed that this mattress contoured nicely to my back, and determined it my favorite sleeping position on this mattress. The Leesa Original mattress costs $999 for a queen after discounts. This is a more expensive option than some of the others on this list, but the balance of support, pressure relief, comfort, and quality construction make this bed an excellent choice for under $1,000.

How the Leesa Performed In Testing

Motion Isolation 3.5/5

I wasn’t surprised to see that the Leesa’s motion-isolating abilities were just above average. Most folks will probably sleep well on it, but if you or your partner wake up easily, you might want a bed with less motion transfer.

Support 4/5

The Leesa kept me well-supported for an all-foam mattress. I got a neutral spinal alignment while resting and didn’t feel like I was sinking too far into the bed.

Cooling 4/5

For a memory foam mattress, the Leesa sleeps fairly cool. I think it could be a good option for hot sleepers looking for an all-foam bed.

Edge Support 3/5

I wasn’t all that impressed with the edge support on the Leesa. I felt quite a bit of sinkage when sitting on the corner and lying near the edge.

Pressure Relief 4.5/5

The pressure map was mostly blue and green while I was back sleeping. This indicates that most folks should avoid excess pressure buildup; in fact, this mattress might even help alleviate back pain in the lumbar region. Based off of the results, I think it’ll provide plenty of lower back contouring and lift at the hip for sleepers under 250 pounds.

What Our Tester Says

“I felt some nice pressure relief while laying on my back, which helps alleviate pain in the lumbar region. I think this is the most comfortable sleeping position on the Leesa. However, I don’t think side or stomach sleepers who suffer from back pain will get the relief they need on this mattress.”

“The Siena boasts a budget-friendly price tag, which is great for any shopper — but also makes it a nice option for a guest room or college dorm.”

Bridget Chapman, former senior product editor

What Customers Say

Astoundingly, the Leesa Original boasts over 20,000 reviews on the company site, totaling 4.5 out of 5 stars. Many happy customers praise the Leesa’s ability to prevent and help with back pain, especially for such a fantastic value. The few complaints that did exist mentioned that the Leesa wasn’t quite as durable as they had hoped. However, it’s important to note that many times, great prices and mattress lifespans go hand in hand.

The Silk & Snow Hybrid mattress is a medium-firm mattress made with cooling gel-infused foam and individually wrapped coils. This mattress has excellent cooling abilities, making it a good choice for anyone who tends to overheat at night. The medium-firm feel also makes this bed a good fit for a variety of sleeping positions and body weight. The Silk & Snow is made with high-quality materials, yet has a low price point, so you’ll get the best bang for your buck.

What our tester says:

“The Silk & Snow Hybrid incorporates cooling gel infusions, which are designed to combat the heat trapping nature of memory foam. The bed also has coils, which allow for more airflow within the bed than a solid foam bed.” – Amelia Jerden, former senior staff writer

Expert Opinion

The Silk & Snow is a budget hybrid mattress that can usually be found for under $900 for a queen size. What really stands about this mattress is its cooling ability, which you don’t always find in a value mattress. It has a cool-to-the-touch cover and gel infusions (both of which help regulate body temperature), plus a layer of innerspring coils that leave plenty of room for airflow. I felt the effects of this bed firsthand in our mattress lab, where the Silk & Snow Hybrid received an impressive cooling score of 4 out of 5.

How the Silk & Snow Hybrid Performed In Testing

Motion Isolation 4.5/5

Even though the Silk & Snow Hybrid has bouncy coils, it performed well in our motion isolation test. The vibrations stayed very low on the seismometer, so if you sleep with a partner, I don’t think you’re likely to feel each other’s movements.

Support 4.5/5

I felt very supported on the Silk & Snow Hybrid, thanks to its springs. You should get a nice lift and be able to maintain a neutral spinal alignment.

Cooling 4/5

As I mentioned, I think this mattress excels at cooling. In addition to evaluating its cooling technology and breathable materials, I put it through our thermal gun test. The temperature only rose by less than 8 degrees after 5 minutes of me lying on the bed, indicating good cooling.

Edge Support 3.5/5

The Silk & Snow Hybrid didn’t do the best on our edge support test, which is a bit rare for a hybrid mattress. So if you’re the kind of sleeper who likes to spread out and take up a lot of room on your bed, this may not be the choice for you.

Pressure Relief 4/5

This mattress did well on our pressure map test (lots of blue around the lumbar region). I think that it could be an especially good choice for anyone struggling with back pain.

What Our Tester Says

“It is a great middle ground firmness for those who don’t want an ultra-firm bed, but also want to feel well-supported. It achieves this feel through a hybrid construction, utilizing some conforming foams in the upper layers and sturdy coils below.”

“To evaluate how cooling a mattress is, first we look at the materials. The Silk & Snow Hybrid incorporates cooling gel infusions, which are designed to combat the heat trapping nature of memory foam. The bed also has coils, which allow for more airflow within the bed than a solid foam bed.”

Amelia Jerden, senior staff writer

What Customers Say

There are 3,000+ reviews on the Silk & Snow company site, and a large number of them have positive things to say about the delicate balance between comfort and support.

“We love our silk and snow mattress. The quality far outweighs the cost. We have different preferences for a soft/firm mattress and this checks both of our boxes in not being too soft or too firm. The mattress is breathable and cool compared to our previous memory foam. We also loved the non-toxic commitment from silk and snow. We recommend it to anyone who is thinking about a new mattress.”

How Much Should You Spend On a Budget Mattress?

What qualities you want and the priorities you have for your mattress may dictate the price. The lowest end of budget mattresses are usually around $400, but some mattresses that are higher quality but still considered a great value may be closer to $1,000. See below for how we classify mattresses in regards to price. And for more information on these varying price points, see our guide on Cheap vs Expensive Mattresses.

Pros of Cheap Mattresses

  • Obviously, cheaper mattresses allow you to save that extra cash for other important things. You can even use the money you save on mattress accessories, such as the best mattress toppers or the best pillows.
  • Most mattress brands offer at least one budget option, so it’s likely that your favorite company has a bed with your wallet in mind
  • There are a number of budget mattresses offer that still allow for a restful sleep, a comfortable surface, and a healthy posture.

Cons of Cheap Mattresses

  • May not provide the high-quality materials and support for larger body types.
  • May not include the necessary pressure relief needed for specific conditions like joint pain.
  • Cheap mattresses may not last nearly as long as something with higher quality materials and a consequently heftier price tag.

How Mattress Cost Is Determined

A mattress can be one of the most expensive items of furniture in your home. The price of a mattress is determined by several factors, like the ones outlined below.

Type

Certain types of mattresses are more expensive than others. High-tech features like customizable zones, automatic temperature and firmness control, under-bed lighting, and sleep-tracking systems tack on extra costs. Bespoke (made-to-order) mattresses are labor-intensive to manufacture and can cost as much as six figures. Extra comfort and support layers, pillow tops, and unique design features such as colored fabrics and quilting can boost the price of a mattress.

Construction and Materials

Both the quality of construction and build-time impact mattress price. A custom or hand-made model should be higher quality and will have a price that reflects the time and attention required to make it. Machine-built or bed-in-a-box mattresses are constructed quickly without costly craftsmanship, allowing them to be priced lower.

Organic mattresses with natural fibers such as wool and mohair, and luxury textiles like silk generally cost more than synthetic or mass-produced materials like poly foam, latex, and memory foam.

Environmental, safety, or medical certifications are also reflected in the price of a mattress. Certifications often require the use of higher-quality materials or different manufacturing processes that are more expensive and/or labor-intensive.

Brand and Retailer

Some mattress companies are able to command a higher price due to their position in the bedding market. Mattresses sold at brick-and-mortar stores tend to be more expensive than bed-in-a-box or traditional models that can be purchased online.

Addtionally, Mattresses made in the U.S. or EU are often more expensive than those made in countries with less rigorous safety and environmental standards. Materials that are manufactured in countries with looser requirements may cost less, but could also give off a strong smell, become discolored, be vulnerable to defects, or degrade more quickly. Other Factors To Consider When Buying A Cheap Mattress

When shopping for a cheap mattress, there are other factors you should consider besides price. Read on below or check out our guide to choosing a mattress for more in-depth information.

Sales and Coupons

If you’re looking for a budget mattress, you might be looking for sales. Remember to check sales and coupons for not only cheap mattress brands but any brands you’re interested in. Some of the best mattress deals occur around holidays, specifically Presidents’ Day, Memorial Day, Labor Day, Black Friday/Cyber Monday, and Christmas. For more tips, see our guide on When’s the Best Time to Buy a Mattress. You can also check out our Sleepopolis mattress coupons and promo codes page to stay up to date on all the latest deals.

Online mattress companies are also a great way to find budget friendly mattresses. If you are looking to get the best mattress at the best price, not just the cheapest one, check out our picks for the best mattress for your money. The majority of the best bed-in-a-box brands are also available exclusively online and are generally more affordable and easy to set up alone.

Shipping Costs

Remember to look at the calculated shipping costs, especially if you live outside the contiguous United States. You may need to pay for freight shipping. A cheaper bed without free shipping can end up being more expensive than a pricier mattress with free shipping. It’s a good idea to check the final price tag before finalizing your purchase. Take a look at our page for the best online mattresses to find beds with favorable shipping methods.

If you are shopping internationally, shipping and handling costs may be more expensive. I recommend checking out our top picks for the best mattresses in Canada to learn more about international pricing, shipping, and shopping.

Quality

Reducing costs may sacrifice some quality. The less you pay, the less durable your mattress will be. A good quality budget mattress should last you at least five years. Higher-quality budget mattresses could last you up to 10 years, and lower quality beds could start to break down in as little as two to three years. Materials like latex and steel coils indicate a more durable budget mattress.

But just because a mattress is cheap doesn’t mean it has to be low-quality. Many renowned and trusted companies in the sleep industry offer up their beds for under $1,000 or even $500 for a queen size. That said, you may have to do some digging to identify these brands and which of their products are giving you the best value. That’s why it’s important to check out reviews from different sleep sites, in addition to seeking out customer feedback on brand websites and online retailers. Paying attention to the trial period and warranty (see more above) is also key.

What are Some Medical Concerns with Budget Mattresses?

“Cheap mattresses can be a great short term solution for a mattress when spending money on a higher quality bed might not be an option, however budget mattresses often lack the quality materials and support needed for optimal spinal alignment, which can lead to discomfort and exacerbate existing health issues. Additionally, they may contain harmful chemicals, fiberglass or allergens, impacting overall sleep quality and respiratory health, particularly for sensitive individuals.”

Durability

Sometimes, cheaper mattresses are made with cheaper materials, such as foams that aren’t likely to last as long. Make sure you check out a mattress’s score in the category of support to ensure you’re buying a product that will be long-lasting. And once again, a bed with a longer trial period and warranty (regardless of price) is probably going to be more durable and less likely to sag.

On average, a cheap mattress typically lasts about 5 to 7 years due to lower-quality materials, and the having less layers in its construction. In contrast, a luxury mattress, often made with higher-quality materials and better construction, can last 8 to 15 years or more, providing better durability, pressure relief and support over a longer period.

Company Policies

Warranties

Mattress warranties give you a guaranty that if your mattress malfunctions, ges ruined in shipping or doesn’t uphold for the time stated, they will replace your mattress. Budget mattresses with 10-year (or longer) warranties are better investments than budget beds without warranties. An affordable mattress with a generous warranty policy is typically well-made and will be replaceable if it starts sagging quickly.

Sleep Trials

A sleep trial refers to the amount of time a brand allows you to have your mattress home and test it. We suggest choosing a mattress that has higher than a 90 day trial. This will allow you to break in your mattress and determine if the mattress suits your sleeping preferences.

Shipping

Shipping can be a sneaky added cost that you want to avoid when buying a cheap mattress. Depending on your budget, most online mattress brands will ship the mattress for free so keep your eye out. If you want peace of mind, for an added fee some brands offer white glove delivery service where they hand delivery, set up and remove your mattress.

Fiberglass Concerns

When buying a cheap mattress, there is a risk of finding fiberglass fibers within them causing several health issues, including respiratory issues and skin irritation. Tiny fiberglass particles may become airborne, leading to potential respiratory problems such as irritation or inflammation of the lungs, especially for those with pre-existing conditions. Additionally, direct contact with fiberglass can cause skin irritation, itching, or rashes, making handling and exposure a worry for overall comfort and health.

Fiberglass is more often found is cheap memory foam beds and can only be dangerous if the cover of the mattress is removed. When looking a your potential new bed be sure to look into the brand. If a mattress is fiberglass free, the brand will more than likely make note of it very proudly however if you aren’t able to quickly find out, then you might risk having a fiberglass mattress. A few alternatives to fiberglass in mattresses include wool, cotton, polyester and rayon. These are all flame retardant materials like fiberglass however offer more comfort, are better for the environment and our health.

How to Make An Affordable Mattress More Comfortable

With a budget mattress, you should expect it to last five to seven years. If you’re looking for something longer-lasting but can’t afford it right now, one of the best ways to extend your mattress’s life and make it more comfortable is a mattress topper. There are a wide variety of toppers out there, and we’ve put together several lists of them to cater to different sleeping preferences:

Types of Mattresses

There are all sorts of different mattress constructions out there, but at Sleepopolis we tend to recognize four different types: memory foam, latex, innerspring, and hybrid.

Sleepopolis testing of mattress materials
An example of the different mattress constructions.
Memory Foam

Memory foam: This type of bed is less expensive since its popularity as a bedding material grew. It’s often used in mattresses as a comfort layer. Memory foam mattresses have a plush feel and little bounce. Memory foam is found in many of the best mattresses for couples.

Poly foam: This foam is often used as a deeper support layer or pillow top fill and is a cheaper alternative to memory foam.

You should expect to pay around $500 to $1,200 for a good memory foam mattress. Poly foam is generally cheaper.

Latex

Latex is a natural product made from the sap of the rubber tree. In contrast to memory foam, latex feels firmer, bouncier, and more responsive. Latex has little sinkage and is good for folks who prefer the feeling of sleeping on top of their mattress rather than in it. Latex can also be appealing to warm sleepers due to its natural cooling properties. The open-cell structure of latex encourages airflow, reducing the retention of body heat.

Depending on the construction, you should pay roughly $1,500 to $2,500 for a quality latex bed.  See our picks for the best latex mattress to learn more.

Innerspring

Innerspring mattresses use an internal network of steel coils for support and durability. Their comfort and base layers are constructed from memory foam, latex, or poly foam. An innerspring mattress offers responsive support and transfers more motion than a memory foam mattress. We’ve rounded up the best innerspring mattresses if firm support is what you’re after.

For a good innerspring mattress, expect to pay around $700 to $1,500.

Hybrid

Hybrid mattresses use coils and layers of foam, providing pressure relief and support. The benefits of hybrid mattresses are similar to those of innerspring mattresses. Steel coils create space inside a mattress, providing increased airflow and breathability. The natural springiness of coils creates bounce and motion transfer. Comfort layers made of latex offer additional bounce, while memory foam layers offer conforming comfort that reduces motion. For more, check out some of our picks for the best hybrid mattress.

A good hybrid mattress should cost around $1,200 to $2,500.

What About Fiberglass in Cheap Mattresses?

Fiberglass is sometimes used in mattresses as a fire retardant chemical, but it can be dangerous if you are exposed to it. Even though the materials in a cheaper mattress may be slightly less high quality than luxury mattresses or pricey organic mattresses, they should not expose you to dangerous chemicals. We pay special attention to the materials in all of the mattresses we test and urge you to also look into the mattresses you buy and consider their materials before purchasing. You can check out our recommendations for the best mattresses without fiberglass to learn more.

Average Mattress Cost by Construction

All of the different mattress types I just outlined above often come at different price points. Here’s how they tend to break down:

Type of Mattress ConstructionAverage Cost
Foam $500–$1,200
Latex$1,500–$2,500
Innerspring$700–$1,500
Hybrid$1,200–$2,500

How We Test the Best Cheap Mattresses

Pressure Relief

Pressure relief refers to the amount of pressure that is alleviated on the body when lying on a mattress. The amount of pressure that a mattress relieves is important because it can help you get a better nights sleep, feel more comfortable all night, and alleviate joint pain during the day.

I test a mattress’ pressure relief performance with a device called a pressure map. I spread the map across the surface of the mattress and lie down on it. A computer then uses color-coded thermal imaging to display how much pressure is being put on my body when I’m lying on my back, side, and stomach. If the map shows a lot of blue, which means little to no pressure, then it’s going to be a good mattress for pressure relief.

A closer look at our pressure map to test pressure relief features in each mattress.
Pressure map results.

Firmness Level

When testing mattresses, we test firmness on a firmness scale from 1-10.
The Sleepopolis mattress firmness scale.

Always consider your ideal mattress firmness level. Many sleepers prefer “universally comfortable” medium-firm mattresses. Generally, side sleepers should opt for soft to medium-soft mattresses, back and combination sleepers opt for medium-firm mattresses, and stomach sleepers opt for firm to extra-firm beds. These firmnesses should help you achieve a neutral spine alignment and meet your sleeping position’s unique pressure relief needs. We test for firmness by rating mattresses on a scale from 1 to 10, with 1 being so soft it’s like sleeping on a giant cotton ball and 10 being the most firm. We use 6.5 as the standard for medium-firm and most beds we test fall into the 5 to 8 firmness range. You can learn more on our mattress firmness guide.

Do Cheap Mattresses Have Worse Pressure Relief and Support?

No! The mattresses that we included in this list all have quality construction that helps give them excellent support and/or pressure-relieving qualities. The reason these mattresses are considered “cheap” is that these retailers offer excellent discounts and deals, and you can find the mattress even cheaper with a Sleepopolis coupon. Cheaper mattresses may sometimes have worse materials or perform poorly, but a lot of the time they are just more affordable brands made with the same qualities.

Sleeping Position

Sleepopolis Sleeping Position Test Photo

Depending on what position you spend the majority of the night in will determine what areas you need to be more supported as well as what kind of firmness is best for comfort and support. Even when shopping on a budget, these are important things to consider when buying a new mattress. For side sleepers, I generally recommend a mattress that is softer, somewhere between a 3 and a 6 on our firmness scale, and we look for pressure relief around the shoulders and hips, and support through the back. For back sleepers, I recommend mattresses that rank from 4 to 7 on our scale, and test for support through the lumbar and hip areas. For stomach sleepers, I recommend a firmer mattress, and test for pressure relief around the hips and support through the spine.

Cooling

Even though you are looking for an affordable mattress, you don’t have to compromise on the comfort of your sleep. One of the most important elements of a comfortable mattress is how well it can stay cool, so we test all of our mattresses using a thermal heat gun. We measure the temperature of the mattress by itself and then again after lying on it for 5 to 10 minutes. The difference in temprature is how we assess the cooling capabilities of the mattress. We consider anything below an 8-degree difference to be good cooling, and below a six-degree difference to be great cooling. We also like to look out for cooling materials, things like breathable coils, Tencel covers that are naturally cooling, gel foams, and cooling materials like latex.

Motion Isolation

A cheap mattress should not mean you get worse sleep, and one of the reasons people sleep poorly is bad motion isolation. This refers to the amount of movement that can be felt, or that is isolated to one area, in a bed when lying in it. Motion isolation is especially important for couples that sleep in the same bed, as you may want to prioritize not feeling your partner move at night.

To test for the motion isolation properties of our mattresses, we use three tests, our red wine test, a ball drop test, and our human test. We start by placing a glass of red wine on the mattress and then moving around to see when and if it tips over, and how much movement caused that tip. Then, we drop a ball from various heights and use a seismograph machine to see how much movement went through the bed when the ball was dropped. Lastly we have our expert testers lay in the bed and report how much movement they can feel. These tests all help you to find the best mattress for your needs.

Body Type

A Note on Body Type

We recognize that people come in all shapes and sizes, and people of every size deserve a mattress that works for their body type. We use the weight categories light, average, and heavy to more easily categorize sleepers based on how mattresses will perform for their body type, as most mattresses are designed for the group we call “average” (130 to 250 pounds).

Lightweight SleepersAverage-Weight SleepersHeavyweight Sleepers
< 160 pounds160 – 230 pounds> 230 pounds

Budget mattresses often work best and last longest for sleepers under 130 pounds because they need less support. Heavier people (over 250 pounds) should use caution when buying a budget mattress; these sleepers should opt for a budget hybrid or innerspring mattress that will last longer and offer more support than a cheaper foam mattress. We test all of our mattresses with various body types in mind to help you find what you need to be comfortable.

Edge Support

Nichole doing the yardstick test on the Novaform ComfortGrande Advanced Gel Memory Foam Mattress
Nichole measuring the edge support of the Novaform ComfortGrande Advanced Gel Memory Foam mattress.

Edge support refers to how strong the edges of your mattress are. Having good edge support is especially important for seniors, or those with chronic pain who need a little bit more help getting out of bed. Edge support is also very beneficial for couples since it allows you to use more of the bed by not letting you sink or roll off the edges. We test for edge support by using a yard stick to measure how much our testers sink when sitting or laying on the edge of the bed. Because you’re looking at a cheaper mattress, it might be more challenging to find a bed with great edge support however with our testing, we have selected some that give you great quality at a good price.

How to Clean Your Mattress

Tips from the Experts!
  • Vacuum: Start by vacuuming the entire surface of the mattress to remove dust, debris, and allergens. Use an upholstery attachment to get into crevices and along the seams, edges to really get every part of the mattress.
  • Spot Clean: For any stains, use a mild detergent mixed with water. (Our fave is the dawn power wash!) Blot the stained area with a clean cloth, avoiding soaking the mattress. Rinse with a damp cloth and blot dry.
  • Deodorize: Sprinkle baking soda evenly over the mattress and let it sit for 15-30 minutes to absorb odors. Vacuum the baking soda off thoroughly.
  • Protect: Use a mattress protector to keep your mattress clean and extend its lifespan.

Who Should Buy a Budget Mattress?

Who Shouldn’t Buy a Budget Mattress?

  • Budget-Conscious Buyers: Those with limited funds or tight budgets who need a functional mattress without high cost.
  • Short-Term Needs: Shoppers needing a temporary solution, such as for a guest room or short-term rental.
  • Minimal Sleep Requirements: People who prioritize affordability over quality materials or advanced features and can tolerate less durability or comfort for the right price.
  • Recent Grads: Young adults tend to prioritize sleep a little less and tend to have smaller budget so will be great to own an affordable bed that doesn’t need to last long.
  • Suffer from Chronic Pain: Shoppers with back, neck, or joint pain need good support, pressure relief and comfort, which cheap mattresses often lack.
  • Plan to Use It Long-Term: If you need a mattress for everyday use over the next 8-10 years, investing in a higher-quality mattress can offer better durability, warranties and support.
  • Value Sleep Quality: Those who prioritize quality sleep and have particular sleeping preferences may find that a cheap mattress affects their sleep quality negatively.

Common Issues with Cheap Mattresses

If you’re looking at cheap mattress, you might have to make some sacrifices when it comes to quality. Here are some of the top issues you might find with a cheap mattress.

  1. Poor Support: Budget mattresses often lack enough support, leading to poor spinal alignment and potential back, hip or neck pain. Be sure to prioritize pressure relief and cushioning covers.
  2. Lack of Durability: Because cheap mattresses tend to lack high quality materials, the mattresses tend to wear out quickly, with issues like sagging, lumps, or indentations developing over time.
  3. Low-Quality Materials: Low quality materials can cause discomfort and lead to a shorter lifespan of the mattress. Your mattress will sag much faster than a higher quality one so we suggest getting a cheap mattress only for a few years.
  4. Limited Pressure Relief: Affordable mattresses may not provide sufficient pressure relief, which can result in discomfort and poor sleep quality.
  5. Increased Motion Transfer: Cheap mattresses often have poor motion isolation, meaning movements can easily disturb a sleeping partner, kids or pet.

Health Concerns of a Cheap Mattress

  • Poor Spinal Support: Budget mattresses often lack adequate support, which can lead to poor spinal alignment and exacerbate back and neck pain over time. If you suffer from chronic pain we recommend investing in a good mattress topper or frame that will relieve those pressure points.
  • Durability Issues: Cheap mattresses may be less durable, leading to quicker wear and tear that can cause sagging and uneven support, further impacting sleep quality and comfort.
  • Chemical Exposure: Low-cost mattresses might use lower-quality materials and chemicals, which can release harmful volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and allergens, potentially leading to respiratory issues or skin irritation.

A Look Into the Sleepopolis Testing Lab

sweetnight prime side sleeper

In order to ensure that we’re recommending the best mattresses to sleepers everywhere, we test each one individually in our mattress lab in Raleigh, North Carolina. Here, our team of Certified Sleep Science Coaches has reviewed more than 300 beds, putting each one through a rigorous testing process that includes measuring a mattress’s motion transfer with a seismometer, tracking its cooling capabilities with a thermal gun, and visualizing its ability to relieve pain with a pressure map.

From there, we give every bed an overall score based on its materials, comfort, support, cooling, edge support, and more. We also factor in brand performance with categories such as value and warranty.

We know that sleep is an integral part of your health, which is why we’ve developed such a detailed methodology when testing mattresses and writing our reviews. We also know that every sleeper is different when it comes to body type, sleeping position, and mattress preference. With so many factors at play, we want to give you an informed opinion so you can make an informed purchase.

How We Chose The Best Mattresses for a Budget

When selecting the best budget mattresses, we naturally placed a high importance on price. At the time of this writing, all of the mattresses here can be found for under $1,000 for a queen size after discounts have been applied (keep in mind this might fluctuate throughout the year). At the same time, we still wanted to ensure that we’re recommending quality beds, which is why the beds also have an overall score of 4 or higher, as drawn from our series of tests.

FAQs

How much should a mattress cost?

There is no “one cost fits all.” The cost of a mattress comes down to a lot of factors including size, materials, the type of mattress, and so on. The average price for queen-size mattresses from well-known online brands comes in around $1,500, but it’s possible to find good options at lower price points.

What is the best time of year to buy a mattress?

The following weekends tend to have the best sales: Presidents Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, and Black Friday. That said, a lot of companies have deals going on all the time, so check out the coupons page on Sleepopolis to find exclusive discounts.

How long will a low-cost mattress last?

Many value mattresses are built to last as long as more expensive beds. When in doubt, ask a mattress company representative and check your warranty. The length and conditions of a warranty can give you a good idea of the mattress’s reliability. Be careful to follow care instructions so your mattress performs as expected over the long-term.

I’m not on a strict budget. Why should I buy a lower-cost mattress?

A low-priced mattress can be a great option in certain circumstances for certain buyers, even those who don’t have to bargain-hunt. You might want to purchase a budget mattress if you need to furnish a guest room, if your child needs a new bed, if you’re sending a kid off to college, or if you need an extra mattress.

What’s the cheapest kind of mattress available?

A basic innerspring bed or a memory foam mattress are two lower-cost options. You may be able to upgrade to a mattress with higher-quality materials that will last longer and offer comfort for years to come.

How can I make a cheap mattress more comfortable?

The easiest way to make a cheap mattress more comfortable is by purchasing a mattress topper. You can even find quality mattress toppers for under $100. These accessories are designed to change the firmness of your mattress, whether it’s making it softer or firmer. This allows you to create a firmness level that’s comfortable for you and your individual sleep needs.
