Brand Snapshot
On a mission to make the “best natural mattress for a better price,” New York-based Real Bed has endeavored to create fantastic organic bedding products that are friendly for the environment and your wallet. At the moment, the brand sells the Real Bed mattress and Real Bed mattress topper.
We won’t be getting into the topper today, but we will go over every inch of the Real Bed mattress, starting with its construction!
What Is the Real Bed Mattress Made Of?
Built with organic cotton, eucalyptus, wool, all-natural latex, and pocketed coils, this mattress is a springy, eco-friendly delight. From just looking at the specs on paper, I can already tell this bed is going to be mighty bouncy and firm.
To find out if my hypothesis is true, let’s dive underneath the cover!
Cover – The cover of the Real Bed mattress is interesting because it has a quasi-pillow top vibe. Layers of eucalyptus and wool are encased in a shell of organic cotton, which produces a fluffy, soft feel that’s breathable and cool.
Comfort – Beneath the cover, you’ll land on a 3” section of all-natural latex. This material has a quick response to pressure, establishing a firm yet bouncy tone. I should also add that latex is naturally cooling, so works to absorb and dissipate body heat evenly throughout the structure. This could be a big plus for sleepers who run hot!
Support – The bulk of the mattress is made up of this tall section of pocketed coils, which brings a ton of bounce and support to the bed. When combined with the buoyant layer of latex foam above it, this system works to actively lift the sleeper up and out of the structure. If you’re someone who likes to feel more “on top” of your bed than “in” it, you may enjoy this vibe! The space between the coils also promotes some nice airflow throughout the mattress.
Base – And finally, the Real Bed wraps things up with a thin layer of latex. You won’t really feel this material, but it does serve to give the coils above it something off which to bounce.
A small note: As I mentioned above, Real Bed also sells a mattress topper that you can affix to your bed if you want even more plush comfort. The topper kind of mirrors the build of the bed itself in that it’s made with all-natural latex, micro-springs, and eucalyptus. But, it comes at an extra cost, so may not be the right fit for folks shopping on more of a budget.
How Does the Real Bed Mattress Feel?
Construction specs are all well and good, but how do they actually make the Real Bed feel? To find out, let’s explore this bed’s firmness.
As with any feel factor, firmness is subjective, and can change a lot depending on one’s body size, shape, and weight. So, my read of this bed’s firmness could differ from your own. For reference, I’m about 5’10”, 190 lbs. and prefer to sleep on my stomach.
After stretching out on the Real Bed, I decided to give it a 8/10 on the firmness scale. When compared to the industry standard of 6.5 for medium firmness, it’s clear that this mattress is quite firm.
Though the organic cotton cover and top layers of latex foam are fairly gentle, the vibe of the bed is really dominated by the tall section of pocketed coils. These springs produce a lot of bounce, support, and firmness, working to position the sleeper squarely on top of the structure. In general, this feel could work well for back and stomach sleepers, both of which tend toward firm beds that set the spine in a nice, even line. Side sleepers, on the other hand, may find the bed too firm for their needs.

Testing the Real Bed Mattress
Now that we’ve assessed this bed’s firmness, let’s take a moment to talk about two other important feel factors: Pressure Relief and Motion Transfer.
Pressure Relief
Pressure relief is all about how well (or not well) a mattress alleviates tension at sensitive spots along the body such as the shoulders, hips, and lower back. To demonstrate the Real Bed’s ability to do just that, let’s test it out with a pressure map.
This device allows me to track the force a sleeper might exert on the bed as they move around at night. For reference, green areas signify zones of low pressure while red ones indicate zones of high pressure.
Back – Sleeping on my back was very comfortable! The top layers of latex did an excellent job of filling in the space at my lower back for pressure relief while the pocketed coils worked to lift my hips in alignment with my shoulders. I should also add that the bed’s tremendous bounce made it easy to move around and change positions.
Side – Of all the positions I tried, this was my least favorite. Side sleepers tend to prefer softer beds that provide plenty of room to sink in for pressure relief at the shoulders and hips. This is a very firm mattress, so there’s not a lot of give or cushioning at these sensitive spots.
Stomach – Unlike side sleepers, stomach sleepers actually prefer an ultra-firm structure, so should be well-pleased on this bed. Though my hips dipped slightly out of alignment in this position, I’d still say this could be a solid pick for strict stomach sleepers.
Motion Transfer
And last but not least, let’s talk about motion transfer. This factor refers to how likely you are to feel your bed mate’s movements in the night. Ideally, a mattress would have low motion transfer, which means it dissipates motion evenly across the structure. An important measure for all, but perhaps especially so for couples!
To illustrate this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 lb. steel ball from heights of 4 inches, Eight inches and 12 inches and measured the disturbance it caused: the bigger the lines, the bigger the disturbance.
These are pretty high motion transfer results, which tells me that you’re likely to be bothered by your partner’s movements in the night. When you consider how bouncy the structure is, these results aren’t too surprising, but could be something for you to think about.
Should You Buy the Real Bed Mattress?
Well folks, we’ve arrived at the end of this review, which means it’s time to decide whether or not this bed is for you. While I can’t make that decision for you, I can leave you with a few final thoughts to help you get there on your own.
Real Bed Mattress Pros
- My favorite thing about this mattress is its organic design. Built with everything from organic cotton to eucalyptus, wool, and all-natural latex, this bed could be a real winner for eco-friendly sleepers.
- It’s also quite firm, which means it could be a good fit for those in search of strong support at the hips and lower back.
- I’d also add that the mattress is super durable, marking it as a solid option for folks in need of something that’ll stand the test of time.
The Real Bed is made with organic materials like latex and organic cotton. Its firm support is great for back and stomach sleepers.
Real Bed Mattress Cons
- Since this bed isn’t very soft, I don’t think it’s going to be the best pick for side sleepers. These folks tend to prefer gentle structures for deep pressure relief at the shoulders and hips.
- This mattress is also pretty bouncy, which means it has really high motion transfer. This could be a big problem for couples in need of a bed that’ll absorb and dissipate movement evenly across the surface. I’d recommend checking out our best mattresses for couples roundup for alternatives.
