DreamCloud vs Purple: Top Similarities 

• Price: The DreamCloud and Purple mattresses are in a similar price range, which means you can really focus on their features when choosing between them.
• Feel: Both of these mattresses are responsive. A nice perk for sleepers who want to feel “on top of” their mattress.
• Shipping: Both mattresses ship free! Both mattresses are bed-in-a-box models that arrive compressed and rolled in a box.

• Construction: The DreamCloud is a hybrid mattress that uses a coil support system. The Purple is a foam bed that uses a hyper-elastic polymer in its special grid layer.
• Cooling: The Purple mattress sleeps cooler than the DreamCloud, which is a nice perk for hot sleepers.

DreamCloud vs Purple: Construction & Feel Differences 

Now that the main similarities and differences between the DreamCloud and Purple are out of the way, let’s focus on what these beds feel like. To find out how these beds feel, we’re going to examine each mattress for a variety of factors, including firmness level, pressure relief, sinkage, motion transfer, and bounce.

Before we dive into this discussion, I just want to take a moment to acknowledge the subjectivity of this section. How I judge a bed’s feel could very well differ from how you’d judge it, so take my notes for what they are.

What’s the Firmness Difference?

When it comes to mattresses, firmness isn’t a one-size-fits-all scenario. Your size, weight, shape, and other factors all determine your ideal level of firmness, meaning your preferences will likely differ from mine. When testing a mattress for firmness, we try to capture the variance different people might feel. I test every bed with colleagues of various body shapes, types, and sizes, then average those responses to determine the final firmness score.

My colleagues and I decided to give the DreamCloud mattress a 7 out of 10 on the firmness scale. When compared to the industry standard of 6.5 for medium firmness, it’s clear this bed is on the firmer side of things. 

Interestingly enough, the Purple also snagged a 7 out of 10 on the firmness scale from me. Again, when we compare this score to the industry standard of 6.5 for medium firmness, it seems like this bed is also firmer.

What Does Each Mattress Feel Like?

The DreamCloud mattress does an excellent job of striking a balance between pressure relief and support. Not only do you get some nice sinkage from the quilted cover and top layer of memory foam, but you get plenty of bounce and lift from the pocketed coil system. 

This combination could work well for a wide range of sleepers, especially those who want to feel positioned squarely on top of their bed like back or combination sleepers. Strict side sleepers, however, may find that the DreamCloud is just a little too firm for their needs.

However, just because I gave both the Purple and DreamCloud mattresses a 7 out of 10 firmness ranking does not mean they feel the same. In my opinion, the Purple’s feel is dominated by a single material — the hyper-elastic polymer in its Purple Grid™. 

This layer establishes a supportive, bouncy, and firm feel that also happens to be great at relieving pressure. Therefore, I think it could be a nice fit for side and back combination sleepers, particularly those who struggle with arthritis and nighttime pain.

How Does The Construction Differ?

Every mattress will feel different to sleepers depending on individual attributes and preferences, such as body weight and sleeping position. Up next, I’ll compare how the DreamCloud and Purple mattresses perform for various sleepers.

DreamCloud vs Purple Comparing Mattress Performance

Temperature

Several factors contribute to a mattress’s cooling ability. First and foremost, I consider its construction. Since both mattresses are hybrid models, there’s plenty of room for air to flow through them and keep them cool.

I tested both mattresses’ cooling features using our thermal gun. After laying on each for a few minutes and measuring how much heat each one trapped, I found that the Purple performed better overall. When I laid on the Purple for five minutes, its temperature only increased by 4.8 degrees, making it one of our best cooling mattresses.

The DreamCloud did a decent job at keeping things cool, too. The DreamCloud is made with high-quality materials and has gel infusions, which help the bed sleep super-cool. Its wrapped coils encourage airflow because there’s so much space between the springs. There should be plenty of breathability. 

Motion Isolation

If you have a restless partner, you’ll want something with better motion isolation so you don’t feel their movements on your side of the bed. If that’s not an issue, or you’re a combination sleeper who switches between different positions throughout the night, a more bouncy and responsive mattress is a plus.

To measure each bed’s motion transfer, I perform a few tests to determine if a mattress is good at isolating movement in one spot. One of those tests consists of dropping a steel ball from various heights and measuring the disturbance it causes using a seismometer.

During this test, I found that both mattresses transfer some motion to the other side of the bed. However, the Purple performed much better overall here, likely due to its all-foam construction. While I could detect some movement traveling to the other side of the mattress, I don’t think it will be enough to disturb your partner at night.

Edge Support

When testing the edge support on both mattresses, I found that the DreamCloud outperformed the Purple. The DreamCloud has strong edge support thanks to its pocketed coil layer. Unfortunately, I cannot say the same thing about the Purple mattress. When lying on the edges of the Purple, I felt it collapsing below me.

Overall, I would recommend the DreamCloud over the Purple to those with mobility issues who need help getting in and out of bed.

Pressure Relief

The DreamCloud performed well on our pressure map test, where we use a specialized mat to measure how much pressure the materials are putting on different parts of the body. The mat then creates a graphic or “map” of the body using color-coded imagery. Areas with low pressure buildup are blue and green, and areas with high pressure buildup are yellow and red. 

As you can see on the map below, there is a lot of blue and green, indicating that this bed is good at relieving pressure around the lower back and shoulders. Sleepers with hip pain, however, might find the DreamCloud a little too firm, as indicated by the yellow spots in that region.

When looking at the Purple’s results below, there is a clear winner. In each sleeping position, we saw almost no pressure buildup. The pressure map was entirely blue, meaning the Purple mattress is an excellent choice for back, hip, and shoulder pain. Its grid layer does a magnificent job of cradling the body and providing relief where sleepers need it most.

Pain Relief

The results of the pressure relief test can indicate whether these mattresses aid in reducing pain in specific areas. I think the DreamCloud is a good option for most average-weight side and back sleepers who struggle with back pain. However, sleepers with sensitive joints or hip pain should go with the Purple.

Durability

I would say the DreamCloud is more durable than the Purple. The DreamCloud has better edge support, meaning it’s less likely to sag prematurely. The DreamCloud also has a layer of individually-wrapped coils, which should add to that durability. 

On the other hand, the Purple mattress has a layer of dense support foam at its base which should add some longevity to it.

DreamCloud’s 365-night trial and lifetime warranty (as high as you’ll find in the sleep industry) help them out quite a bit here.

• Stellar: Purple got a Stellar rating because I was paired with a support specialist right away. She answered my questions quickly and helpfully. Purple had one of the fastest customer support response times I’ve experienced. Although Purple’s warranty and trial period are lacking compared to DreamCloud’s, their responsive and helpful customer service representatives help take them to the next level.
