Brand Snapshot
Avocado was one of the first mattress companies to offer eco-friendly bed-in-a-box mattresses. Avocado mattresses are all Greenguard Gold certified, so you can rest easy knowing they’re free of harmful chemicals. Avocado always earns a spot in our Best Natural Organic Mattress roundups because they do such a great job producing high quality organic mattresses. They even offer a completely vegan mattress option!
The Avocado Latex is the brand’s first all-foam latex mattress. I’ll take a look at how it stacks up against the Avocado Green, their flagship hybrid mattress, a little later in this review. I’ll also look at how the Avocado Latex compares to two other all-foam latex beds, the Zenhaven mattress and the Ghostbed mattress. If you’re interested in comparing the Avocado Latex to other latex mattresses, check out our Best Latex Mattress Reviews.
But first, let’s take a look at what the Avocado Latex mattress is made of.
What is the Avocado Latex Mattress Made Of?
What materials make up the Avocado Latex? Unlike Avocado Green, which is a hybrid that includes pocketed coils, the Avocado Latex’s support core is made of all-latex foam. This means the Avocado will feel just a bit less bouncy than other latex mattresses, though it will still feel as supportive and responsive as a classic latex bed.
A few other things to note about latex is that it is naturally cooling, naturally durable, and naturally antimicrobial — all great features in any mattress! Avocado also uses Global Organic Latex Standard (GOLS) certified dunlop latex in this mattress, so you can be sure this is a 100% organic bed.
Cover – The Avocado Latex is covered in organic cotton and quilted with Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) organic certified wool. GOTS certified wool is all-natural, and adds a nice bit of coziness to this mattress.
Latex Core – The mattress’s core is made with nine inches of organic certified latex. This cooling latex core is made of three different layers of latex with the softer top acting as a comfort layer, and the firmest layer of latex at the bottom acting as a supportive base. Its latex core gives this mattress a bouncy, supportive feel.
What Does the Avocado Latex Mattress Feel Like?
Let’s talk about what it feels like to lie down on the Avocado Latex. Keep in mind that a mattress will feel different depending on your preferred sleeping position and body type. For reference, I’m 5’10”, about 190 poundss, and prefer to sleep on my stomach.
I thought the Avocado Latex was a very firm mattress. I rated it as an 8 out of 10 on the firmness scale, so you know it definitely feels firmer than a traditional medium-firm mattress, which is rated at 6.5 out of 10 on the scale.
The naturally firm latex core in this mattress makes it a great fit for back sleepers who like a firm-feeling bed. It will offer enough support to keep their hips and shoulders in line and prevent pain or soreness in the lower back.
The Avocado Latex is a bit too firm for side sleepers. This mattress doesn’t have a lot of give, so it will put a lot of pressure on their shoulders and hips. This can create soreness and stiffness at those pressure points. I’d recommend side sleepers check out our Best Mattress for Side Sleepers roundup to find some beds that could work for them. A mattress topper could also be a solution for side sleepers looking at this mattress.
The Avocado Latex is ideal for stomach sleepers. These folks need an extra firm bed that prevents their hips from sinking into the mattress. The Avocado Latex provides the supportive lift these sleepers need to feel comfortable all night.
I also like this mattress for back and stomach combination sleepers. The Avocado Latex is taut and bouncy, so these folks won’t have any trouble moving around and switching positions.

Testing the Avocado Latex Mattress
To give you a more objective idea of what the Avocado Latex mattress feels like, I tested its pressure relief, motion transfer, and edge support. Let’s take a look at its performance on my pressure relief test first.
Pressure Relief
Pressure relief is an important feature of any mattress. You need a mattress that provides enough cushion to relieve pressure around your hips and shoulders to prevent pain. This is especially important for side sleepers and folks who suffer from hip or shoulder pain.
To measure the pressure relief on the Avocado Latex, I used a pressure map. I spread a pressure mat out on the mattress and lay on top of it. It created a map based on my body weight distribution. You’ll see it range from blue in low pressure areas to red in high pressure areas.
Back — I felt supported across my back on the Avocado Latex and didn’t feel myself sinking into the mattress at all. As you can see on the pressure map my body weight is evenly distributed. If you’re a back sleeper who likes a firm feeling mattress, I think you’ll be happy on the Avocado Latex. If you prefer a softer feel, check out our Best Mattress for Back Sleepers roundup to explore some other options.
Side — You’ll notice increased pressure around my shoulders and hips on the map. I don’t think this mattress is a good fit for side sleepers. I felt a lot of pressure around my shoulders and over time that could lead to soreness and pain. Avocado offers an optional pillow top on their Avocado Green mattress, so that bed might be a better fit for you if you’re a side sleeper interested in an Avocado.
Stomach — If you’re a stomach sleeper like me this mattress should be a great fit for you. I felt nice and supported on the Avocado Latex, and my hips didn’t sink into the mattress at all. It’s really important for stomach sleepers to keep their hips lifted up in line with their shoulders. They need to avoid sinkage at the hips to keep their spines neutrally aligned, which helps prevent back pain.
Motion Transfer
Next up is the motion transfer test. Motion transfer is a measure of how much movement on one side of the bed travels to the other side. A mattress with low motion transfer, or high motion isolation, is a great fit for sleepers who share their bed with a partner or pet. They won’t be disturbed by tossing and turning on the other side of the bed if they’re on a mattress that isolates motion well.
To test the motion transfer on the Avocado Latex mattress I dropped a steel ball onto the mattress from different heights. A seismometer on the other side of the bed measured how much motion from the ball traveled across the mattress.
Unfortunately the Avocado Latex mattress has a high level of motion transfer. High motion transfer is a common feature of latex mattresses, so this didn’t come as a surprise. You’re likely to notice a partner moving around on the other side of any latex mattress. I wouldn’t recommend the Avocado Latex to couples because of its lack of motion isolation. If you’re a couple looking for a mattress with low motion transfer, check out our Best Mattress for Couples roundup.
On the other hand, latex has a quick response to pressure that offers great mobility to combination sleepers. I really like most latex mattresses for combo sleepers for this reason. Combo sleepers interested in a firm bed should be happy with the lift on the Avocado Latex. I didn’t feel stuck or have trouble changing positions on this mattress. If you’re a combo sleeper looking for a softer feel, check out our Best Mattress for Combination Sleepers roundup for some other great options.
Edge Support
Last up is the edge support test. If a bed has good edge support, you’ll be able to roll all the way to the side of the mattress without feeling like it might collapse. This is important for anyone who wants to spread out across the entire sleeping area of their mattress, and for folks who like to sit on the edge of the bed to tie their shoes in the morning.
I was impressed with the edge support on the Avocado Latex. A lot of all-foam mattresses have weak edges, but I was pleasantly surprised by the strong edge on this bed. Most sleepers should be able to spread out across its entire sleeping surface without any issues. If you’re a heavier sleeper, you might prefer an innerspring mattress with even stronger edges or might want to visit our best mattresses for heavy people page.

Avocado Latex Mattress Vs.
If you’re interested in an all-foam latex mattress, you may be wondering how the Avocado Latex compares to other all-latex foam beds. Below, I’ll compare the Avocado Latex to two other popular all-foam latex mattresses-in-a-box, the Zenhaven mattress and the Ghostbed mattress.
Zenhaven Mattress
- Like the Avocado Latex, the Zenhaven is made of high-quality organic materials. Both these beds are good fits for sleepers on the hunt for an all-natural mattress.
- The Zenhaven is offered in a luxury plush and gentle firm model, and side sleepers will likely be happier on the luxury plush Zenhaven mattress than they would be on the Avocado Latex mattress.
- Like the Avocado Latex, the Zenhaven is a long-lasting bed. Shoppers interested in durability should take a look at both of these mattresses.
- Interested in learning more about the Zenhaven mattress? Check out my full Zenhaven Mattress Review.
Ghostbed Mattress
- The Ghostbed is a firm mattress, but it’s not quite as firm as the Avocado Latex. Back sleepers interested in a slightly softer feel might prefer the Ghostbed over the Avocado.
- Unlike the Avocado Latex, the Ghostbed is not all-natural, so shoppers looking for an organic mattress will probably prefer the Avocado Latex.
- The Ghostbed is a solid value buy, so budget shoppers might want to check this mattress out.
- Check out my full Ghostbed Mattress Review to learn more about this bed.
Other Models
I’ve previously reviewed the Avocado Green mattress, which has a few key differences from the Avocado Latex mattress. Take a look below to find out which of these mattresses is a better fit for your needs.
Avocado Green Mattress
- The Avocado Green is a latex hybrid mattress, so it uses a pocketed coil system for support instead of an all-latex core.
- Like the Avocado Latex, the standard Avocado Green should be a good fit for back or stomach sleepers.
The Avocado Green offers a pillow top version, so side sleepers interested in an Avocado mattress will probably be most comfortable on the Avocado Green. - Like the Avocado Latex, this Avocado green is all-natural and eco-friendly. Either of these mattresses could be a fit for environmentally-conscious sleepers. Unlike the Avocado Green the Avocado Latex is 100% biodegradable, which may give it an edge with sleepers concerned about sustainability.

Should You Buy the Avocado Latex Mattress?
And that’s it for my Avocado Latex mattress review! To help you decide if this mattress is a good fit for you, I’ve made a list of some of the pros and cons of the Avocado Latex.
Avocado Latex Pros
- Stomach sleepers should find a lot to love in the Avocado Latex. This is one of the firmest mattresses I’ve ever tested, and firm mattresses are ideal for stomach sleepers. The Avocado Latex should provide them with the support they need to achieve a neutral spinal alignment.
- This mattress is a great choice for anyone looking for an organic mattress. The Avocado Latex is made of high quality natural materials.
- The Avocado Latex sleeps cool and does a great job of encouraging airflow and dissipating body heat. If you’re someone who sleeps hot I’d check out the Avocado Latex.
Avocado Latex Cons
- This mattress is too firm for side sleepers. These folks will need a softer mattress to relieve pressure at their shoulders and hips.
- If you’re looking for a plush feel that offers deep sinkage and body contouring, the Avocado Latex is not a good fit for you. It’s a springy and supportive mattress without a lot of give.

FAQ
Does the Avocado Latex mattress need a box spring?
No, you can use a box spring if you’d prefer but you don’t need one. A slatted bed frame should work just fine.
How long will the Avocado Latex last?
Latex is a very durable material so I expect this mattress to last for a long time. It’s always a good idea to check your mattress for signs of sagging every few years, but Avocado offers a 25 year warranty on this bed so it should be a very long-lasting mattress.
Where can I test the Avocado Latex mattress?
Avocado offers a full year in-home sleep trial, so you can test this mattress in the comfort of your own bedroom.
How is the Avocado Latex mattress delivered?
The Avocado Latex is compressed and shipped in a box. You’ll want to let any bed-in-a-box mattress decompress for a few hours before you sleep on it so you get the full support it offers. Because the Avocado Latex is an all natural mattress, you won’t have to worry much about it off-gassing any harmful chemicals.
Can you flip an Avocado Latex mattress?
No, you can’t flip the Avocado Latex. It’s built from the top down, and will be uncomfortable if you sleep on top of its firm base layer.
