Is the Vaya Hybrid a Good Mattress for You?
The Vaya Hybrid is a medium soft mattress that’s a good option for side sleepers, back sleepers, and combo sleepers. It comes at a great price, and offers cooling properties as well as great edge support. Still wondering if the Vaya Hybrid is right for you? Here are some quick final thoughts to help you decide.
Who I recommend the Vaya Hybrid for
- The Vaya Hybrid is a great value, which makes it a great new bed for anyone on a budget.
- Combination sleepers are likely to appreciate its bouncy support that will help them change sleep positions easily.
- It has surprisingly good edge support for a value mattress.
Who I don’t recommend the Vaya Hybrid for
- It didn’t perform very well on our motion transfer test, meaning that couples or those who sleep with pets should go with another option.
- It doesn’t have the support that heavy sleepers need. Innerspring mattresses are great options for heavier sleepers.
How Firm is the Vaya Hybrid Mattress?
Now that we know who I do and don’t recommend the Vaya mattress for, let’s talk about what it really feels like. Firmness is one of the most important factors that determines how a mattress will feel. Keep in mind that your ideal firmness level will depend on your body type and preferred sleeping position. For reference, I’m 5’10”, weigh 190 lbs, and prefer to sleep on my stomach.
After spending time lying on the Vaya Hybrid, I’d give it a 6 out of 10 on the firmness scale, with 1 being the least firm and 10 being the most firm. This is just below the industry standard for medium firm of 6.5, so I’d call this a medium soft mattress.
The Vaya Hybrid’s layer of Vaya foam gives it a good amount of pressure relief and sinkage. Its pocketed coils give some support, though I’d say it has less support than a typical medium firm mattress.
I’d recommend this mattress as a nice option for side sleepers, who will appreciate the sinkage they’ll get on the Vaya mattress. They’re likely to experience pressure relief at their hips and shoulders. It’s also a great option for budget-savvy side sleepers.
I would also recommend the Hybrid to combination sleepers, who tend to move around a bit at night, since this mattress is bouncier than a traditional memory foam mattress. I also think back sleepers who like to sink into their mattress could do well on the Vaya.
I’d steer strict stomach sleepers to a mattress with a more firm feel. I don’t think the Vaya offers stomach sleepers the support they need to keep their hips in a neutral alignment with their shoulders. I’d also tell anyone over about 230 lbs to go with a mattress with more support. I’d recommend sleepers with a higher body weight check out the best mattress for heavy people.

Vaya Hybrid Mattress Performance
When testing the features of a mattress, we make sure to look at many different features because of all the varying sleeper types out there. Below, we’ll see how the Vaya Hybrid fairs for different positions, body sizes, and even the needs of couples!
Testing the Vaya Hybrid Mattress in Different Sleeping Positions
The world is full of many different sleepers of all shapes and sizes. On top of this, each sleeper will require or want a certain level of support. Let’s see what the Vaya might look like with your personal traits and preferences in mind.
Is the Vaya Hybrid a Good Mattress for Light Sleepers (Under 130 lb)?
- Light Back Sleepers – The Vaya Hybrid could be a bit soft for these sleepers, but those who enjoy being cradled by foam could really enjoy this bed.
- Light Side Sleepers – There’s a lot to love for side sleepers with the Vaya, including a great level of sinkage and body-contouring. .
- Light Stomach Sleepers – Because of its softness, I think these sleepers could benefit from a mattress with a little bit more lift and support.
Is the Vaya Hybrid a Good Mattress for Average Weight Sleepers (130 – 250 lb)?
- Average Weight Back Sleepers – Back sleepers who enjoy a little sinkage should be quite pleased on this mattress.
- Average Weight Side Sleepers – Side sleepers should really appreciate the sinkage here as well, and will also experience some nice pressure relief.
- Average Weight Stomach Sleepers – I found this bed to be too soft for stomach sleepers, as it won’t offer the proper amount of support.
Is the Vaya Hybrid a Good Mattress for Heavy Sleepers (over 250 lb)?
- Heavy Back Sleepers – Unfortunately, this mattress won’t provide the necessary support for a heavier sleeper. I’d recommend checking our roundup of the best mattresses for heavy people to find some more targeted options.
- Heavy Side Sleepers – See above.
- Heavy Stomach Sleepers – See above.
Vaya Hybrid Mattress Pain Relief Performance
Pressure relief refers to how well a mattress alleviates tension at pressure points. Whether you’re a side, back, stomach, or combo sleeper, pressure relief is an important part of how comfortable your mattress feels. You’ll want to make sure your mattress helps relieve pressure at your shoulders, hips, and lower back.
To test the Vaya Hybrid’s pressure relieving ability, I used a pressure map, which gauges how much pressure is applied on the body. I put the pressure map between myself and the mattress and laid on it on my back, side, and stomach. The map uses a gradient from red to blue, with red indicating the highest pressure, and blue indicating the lowest pressure.
Back Pain – The Vaya is a good choice for back sleepers with back pain. The support level will keep the spine in a healthy position, and you’ll find some nice pressure relief in the lower back. Side sleepers should also find relief, as this bed will contour and cushion all the right places. I think that stomach sleepers will find the bed to be too plush, potentially causing too much sinkage at the hips , which could result in a misaligned or curved spine.
Shoulder Pain – I think back sleepers will appreciate the soft-to-the-touch feel of this mattress that will contour the shoulders to a state of gentle relief. Side sleepers will also be really happy here, as the soft foams will specifically target pressure in the hips and shoulders. Stomach sleepers are likely to find that this mattress is still too soft.
Hip Pain – The soft relief the back sleepers will experience in the lumbar region should resonate with the hips as well. Side sleepers will be even more grateful for the comfort of these foams here, as the hips often need even softer support. Again, though stomach sleepers may find the soft foams to be comforting initially, this bed will ultimately be too plush for their needs..
Vaya Hybrid Mattress Performance for Couples
Being in a couple and sleeping with a partner brings up a whole other range of factors to throw on your mattress priority list. The important features you’ll want to look for include motion transfer, sex, edge support, and of course, cooling. Let’s get into it!
Motion Transfer
Motion transfer is a mattress’s ability to absorb movement. If a mattress has high motion transfer, that means that you’ll feel a lot of movement from the other side of the bed. It’s an especially important factor for couples or those who sleep with pets to consider. If you don’t want to be disturbed by your partner getting up for a glass of water or your dog jumping up on the bed, you’ll want to choose a mattress with low motion transfer.
To test the Vaya Hybrid’s motion transfer, I dropped a steel ball from three different heights on one side of the bed and measured the results with a seismometer on the opposite side of the bed. Each height is meant to mimic a different movement you might experience in bed, from tossing and turning to jumping on the bed.
The Vaya Hybrid didn’t perform all that well on our motion isolation test. I saw that a lot of movement transferred from one side of the bed to the other. This means that you might be disturbed by your partner’s movements in the night on this mattress. If you don’t sleep alone, I’d recommend checking out our best mattress for couples.
Sex
It’s no secret that couples are doing more than just sleeping, so it’s important to factor sex into your new mattress decision. An ideal sex-capable mattress will have a good amount of bounce and responsiveness. Thanks to its hybrid construction, the Vaya’s coils give this bed a good bit of bounce. Additionally, the comfort layer of Vaya foam has a very good amount of responsiveness. I can say with confidence that this bed is a good mattress for sex.
Cooling
Two sleepers cohabiting the same bed are definitely going to create some serious heat compared to someone sleeping alone. This makes cooling a big deal for couples. The Vaya Hybrid is designed to be cooling. Its Vaya foam is more porous than traditional memory foam, which helps air flow throughout the mattress. Its pocketed coils also offer more breathability, making the Vaya Hybrid a good cooling mattress.
Edge Support
Edge support refers to how well a mattress holds up at the edges. If a mattress has good edge support, you can sleep all the way on the sides and not feel like you’re going to fall off. It’s an important factor for couples to consider, since they’ll want to take advantage of the full surface area of their mattress.
The Vaya Hybrid has great edge support. I felt that it was sturdy and that I wouldn’t roll off the side of the bed. This isn’t surprising, since the Vaya Hybrid is made with extra support around the sides.
What is the Vaya Hybrid Mattress Made Of?
The Vaya Hybrid is made of the brand’s proprietary Vaya foam, which is meant to offer sinkage and pressure relief, while motion-isolating coils give it added support and bounce. Like its flagship model, this hybrid mattress is constructed simply in comparison to some other mattresses on the market. This simple construction is how the brand is able to offer their mattresses at such affordable prices. If you’d like to see some of our other best value mattresses, check out the best cheap mattress.
Cover – The Vaya Hybrid’s breathable cover is made from a lightweight polyester fabric that’s designed to be both soft and cooling.
Comfort Layer – The Hybrid’s top layer is made from the brand’s proprietary Vaya foam. It’s a cushioning layer that is designed to contour to the body better than traditional memory foam. It also has a high level of responsiveness.
Support Layer – The Hybrid uses a layer of pocketed coils which give bouncy support. The coils also help sleepers achieve spinal alignment to avoid pain.
Base Layer – The foundation layer is made from a HD polyurethane (poly foam), which reinforces the coils and adds durability.
Vaya Hybrid Mattress Unboxing and Off-Gassing
This bed-in-a-box arrives at your home, curbside, within 3 to 5 business days, via FedEx. Vaya also offers hauling away of old mattresses for shoppers based in California only.
As with many compressed mattresses , it’s important to note the possibility of some off-gassing. This is a common occurrence with any boxed mattress, and happens due to the compression for shipping. Vaya Sleep notes that any off-gassing you may experience is completely temporary and safe. Any odors should dissipate within a day or so.

My Final Thoughts about the Vaya Hybrid Mattress
Before we head out, let’s check out my summarized likes and dislikes for the Vaya Hybrid to better help you make a final decision!
My favorite things about the Vaya Hybrid mattress
I really appreciated the price point of this mattress; it is a good quality cheap mattress. It has great edge support, which is super important for utilizing all the space your bed has to offer. I also really liked this bed for side, back, and combo sleepers. It has a great amount of sinkage, pressure relief, and bounce, that I think many sleepers could find something to love here. The Vaya Hybrid also earned Sleepopolis’ title of Best Hybrid Mattress on Amazon in 2024.
My Vaya Hybrid mattress complaints
Because of its poor performance on the motion transfer test, I think this bed might not be right for couples, especially those who are easily woken up by a restless partner… However, it did perform pretty well in the sex category, so if that’s your main concern you could be happy here. I also found that heavy sleepers won’t likely find what they need with this bed, due to its lack of firm support.

Vaya Hybrid Mattress Vs
If you’re interested in the Vaya Hybrid, it can be helpful to compare it to some other hybrid mattresses from other mattress brands. Below, I’ll compare the Vaya Hybrid to two other popular hybrid models, the Amerisleep AS3 Hybrid and the Tuft & Needle Hybrid.
Amerisleep AS3 Hybrid
- Like the Vaya Hybrid, the Amerisleep Hybrid uses a proprietary comfort foam that is designed to be more cooling than traditional foam, which is always a plus for hot sleepers.
- The Vaya Hybrid and the Amerisleep AS3 feel quite similar. They’re both plush mattresses that offer plenty of pressure relief; I think both mattresses are great for side sleeping.
- The Amerisleep AS3 and the Vaya Hybrid both offer bouncy support, but the Amerisleep performed better on our motion isolation test, making it a better option for couples.
- Learn more in my Amerisleep mattress reviews.
Tuft & Needle Hybrid
- The Tuft & Needle Hybrid and Vaya Hybrid are both built with cooling properties. However, I’d say the Tuft & Needle is more cooling, since its gel memory foam comfort layer is infused with gel beads and graphite, which help dissipate body heat.
- The Tuft & Needle Hybrid is a bit firmer than the Vaya Hybrid. I definitely felt more supported on the Tuft & Needle, which I think makes it a better option for heavier sleepers.
- The Tuft & Needle has quite a few more layers than the Vaya model, and I’d say it’s probably a more high-quality mattress overall. That’s also reflected in the price disparity between these two beds.
- Check out my full Tuft & Needle Hybrid mattress review for more information.
Other Models from Vaya
If you’re wondering how the Vaya Hybrid compares to the brand’s original foam bed, the Vaya Mattress, look no further. Below, I’ll break down the key differences between these two mattress types.
Vaya Mattress
- The Vaya Mattress is an all-foam bed, while the Vaya Hybrid uses a combination of foam and coils.
- Both beds are more affordable than your typical bed-in-a-box mattress, making them great options for budget-savvy shoppers.
- The all-foam Vaya is probably a better option for back sleepers who like to sink into bed or side sleepers that want added pressure relief at the shoulders.
