Sweet Night Island Mattress – Our Video Review
Is the Sweet Night Island a Good Mattress For You?
Before I get into the details, I want to answer the most important question: who is the Sweet Night Island best for? This hybrid mattress has a firm feel, and I’d recommend it to back and combination sleepers. It’s very responsive, so you won’t have trouble changing positions at night, and it offers the support back sleepers need to achieve a neutral spinal alignment.
The Island could also work well for couples because it has great edge support and isolates motion fairly well (more on what that means below). Lighter-weight stomach sleepers might also like this bed.
If you’re a side sleeper or a strict stomach sleeper on the heavier side, I don’t think the Sweet Night Island mattress will work for you. It won’t provide enough pressure relief at the shoulders and hips for side sleepers, and may not offer enough support for some stomach sleepers. If you are in one of these categories, I’d recommend checking out our best mattresses for side sleepers or best mattresses for stomach sleepers.
What Does the Sweet Night Island Mattress Feel Like?
Now that you know who this mattress does and doesn’t work for, let’s talk about how it feels. You should keep in mind that firmness is subjective. A mattress will feel different depending on your body weight, body type, and preferred sleeping position. For reference, I’m 5’ 10”, 125 lbs, and prefer to sleep on my side.
The Sweet Night is a firmer mattress. I gave it a 7 out of 10 on the firmness scale. The industry standard for medium firmness is a 6.5 out of 10, so this bed is a bit firmer than an average medium-firm mattress.
In addition to being on the firmer side, this mattress also feels bouncy and responsive. Like all of the best hybrid mattresses the Sweet Night uses innerspring coils to offer sleepers some lift.
I’d recommend this firm, responsive mattress to back sleepers who prefer a firm feel. It balances the pressure relief and support these folks need to keep their spines straight and avoid back pain.
Combination sleepers, especially back and stomach combination sleepers, should also be happy on this Sweet Night. It offers the firm support they need on their back and stomach and is easy to move around and change positions on.

Testing the Sweet Night Island Mattress
To give you a more objective look at the Sweet Night Island I ran a few tests on it in the Sleepopolis studio. Below, I’ll go into detail about the pressure relief, motion isolation, and edge support on this mattress.
Pressure Relief
First up is my pressure map test. Alleviating pressure around pressure points at the shoulders and hips is important for all sleepers. Pressure buildup can lead to pain and stiffness over time.
To measure the Sweet Night’s pressure relief, I put a pressure map on the mattress and lay down in a few positions to measure how much pressure it put on my body. You’ll see the map range from blue in low pressure areas to red in high pressure areas. It’s important to note here that I’m a fairly light sleeper, so areas that appear blue or green for me might appear yellow or red for a heavier person.
Back — As you can see, the map is all blue when I’m on my back. I felt really comfortable on my back on the Sweet Night. I felt a lot of support around my lower back, which is important in this position. Back sleepers need a mattress that’s supportive enough to keep their spines neutrally aligned, which helps prevent back pain.
Side — You’ll see a little green on the pressure map where I rolled onto my side, but I don’t think this tells the whole story. I felt a lot of pressure building up around my hips and shoulders on the Island mattress. Side sleepers need a mattress that will alleviate pressure at the hips and shoulders to prevent pain. So I’d recommend side sleepers look for a mattress that offers more sinkage, like one of our best pillow top mattresses.
Stomach — As you can see, the map is blue when I’m on my stomach. Personally, I felt supported on my stomach. I didn’t feel my hips sinking into the mattress too far, which is key to keeping stomach sleepers’ spines neutrally aligned and preventing pain. But, if you’re a heavier stomach sleeper, or a stomach sleeper who doesn’t change positions at all during the night, I’d be cautious about choosing this Sweet Night mattress. You might need something just a bit firmer to get the support you need.
Motion Transfer
Next up is the motion transfer test. This is a measure of whether or not you’re going to be disturbed by someone on the other side of the bed rolling around or getting up to go to the bathroom.
I used a seismometer to measure motion transfer on the Sweet Night. I dropped a steel ball onto the bed from varying heights and measured how much of that motion traveled from one side of the bed to the other.
I’d say the Island performed about average on this test. Based on my results, you would not be disturbed by someone rolling over or changing positions on the other side of this bed. But, you would notice if a pet jumped onto the bed or your partner got up for a glass of water in the middle of the night.
I often recommend mattresses with a mix of responsiveness and motion isolation to couples, so I think couples willing to sacrifice a little bit of motion isolation for some mobility might be very happy on the Sweet Night. I’d also like to note that combination sleepers should really like this bed. I had no trouble at all moving around and switching positions on the Sweet Night Island, which is a great sign for these sleepers.
Edge Support
Lastly, I tested the edge support on the Sweet Night Island by rolling all the way to the edge of the mattress. A mattress with great edge support won’t collapse under your weight when you’re on the edge of the bed. This is especially important for couples, since being able to use the entire sleeping surface of your mattress can make it feel bigger.
I was really impressed by the edge support on this mattress. I didn’t feel it collapsing under my weight at all. This is a great sign for couples, especially if they like to spread out on their mattress. I’d recommend couples looking for a firm hybrid mattress check out the Sweet Night Island.

What Is the Sweet Night Island Mattress Made Of?
The Island is a hybrid mattress that combines pocketed coils with layers of gel memory foam and CertiPUR-US certified poly foam. This means the foams in the Sweet Night will be free of things like formaldehyde and heavy metals. I tested the 10-inch model of the Sweet Night Island, but Sweet Night does offer a 12-inch model for sleepers who’d prefer more foam comfort layers.
Let’s take a look inside the Sweet Night to give you a better idea of what it might be like to sleep on this bed!
Cover — The Island is covered in a quilted cotton knit. It felt soft and cozy to the touch. The cover is also hypoallergenic and resistant to dust mites, which is a nice perk.
Comfort Layer — Below the cover is a top layer of gel-infused memory foam. This comfort foam layer offers some pressure relief to the Island mattress. And the gel infusion ensures this bed will be more breathable than a traditional memory foam mattress.
Transition Layer — Next up is a layer of responsive poly foam. This layer gently eases sleepers down onto the Sweet Night’s coil support layer. This responsive foam will help sleepers feel on top of the bed, rather than hugged by it.
Support Layer — The Sweet Night’s support layer is made of individually wrapped steel coils. The fabric wrapping on these coils allows them to move individually, which will cut down on motion transfer. This tall coil layer will also promote airflow throughout the mattress, which is a nice perk for hot sleepers.
Base Layer — The Sweet Night’s base is made of high-density support foam. You won’t feel this foam, but it gives the coils in this mattress something to bounce off of.
Recommendations
Before I wrap up my review, I want to briefly list a few of my favorite things, and a few of my complaints, about the Sweet Night Island.
My Favorite Things About the Sweet Night Island Mattress
- This responsive mattress could be great for combination sleepers who need mobility to change positions at night.
- Couples may appreciate the strong edge support, cooling features, and decent motion isolation on the Sweet Night.
- This mattress is a great value buy, so budget shoppers might want to check it out. I’d even go as far as awarding it a “Best Mattress for the Money” superlative!
My Complaints About the Sweet Night Island Mattress
- Side sleepers will find this mattress a bit too firm for their needs. I’d recommend they opt for something that offers a little more pressure relief around the shoulders and hips.
- Sleepers who want to feel hugged by their mattress won’t get what they’re looking for on the Sweet Night. This bed lifts you up and out of the structure, rather than contouring to your body.
- Heavier sleepers who sleep on their stomachs might want to opt for a firmer innerspring mattress to get the support and durability they need. One of our best innerspring mattresses could be a good fit.
