Parachute Mattress Review Video
Is the Parachute a Good Mattress for You?
Before we delve into the full review, let’s answer one of the most important questions: is the Parachute right for you? Depending on your body weight, height, and preferred sleeping position, this mattress may or may not work for you, so I’ll tell you who I recommend it for.
Who I recommend the Parachute mattress for
- Thanks to its innerspring coils, the Parachute is quite a bouncy mattress, which makes it a great choice for combination sleepers who will be able to easily switch positions throughout the night.
- I think the Parachute is also a nice option for stomach sleepers, since it has enough support to keep their hips from sinking too far into the mattress, which can cause back pain.
- I think back sleepers who like the feel of a firm mattress will be happy on the Parachute.
- The Parachute has great edge support, which makes it a nice option for heavier sleepers who will want to be able to take advantage of the full mattress.
Who I don’t recommend the Parachute mattress for
- I think side sleepers will find the Parachute too firm. Side sleepers need a softer mattress so that their hips and shoulders can sink in a bit. If you’re a side sleeper, I’d recommend checking out our best mattresses for side sleepers.
- The Parachute might not be the best mattress for couples, as it has pretty high motion transfer, meaning you’re likely to feel movement from one side of the bed on the other.
- I don’t think fans of memory foam or anyone looking for the feel of a foam mattress will be happy on the Parachute. I’d steer them to our best memory foam mattress roundup.
- The Parachute isn’t a cheap mattress. I’d tell budget-savvy shoppers to check out our best cheap mattresses.
What Does the Parachute Mattress Feel Like?
One of the most important factors that will determine whether or not you’ll be happy on a mattress is its feel. However, feel is quite subjective, so my opinion on how it feels could be different than yours. To get a consensus on the Parachute’s feel, I polled a range of folks in the office and together we determined its firmness.
Overall, we determined that the Parachute is a 7 out of 10 on the firmness scale, with 1 being the softest and 10 being the firmest. The industry standard for medium firmness is 6.5, so the Parachute is just a bit firmer than medium-firm.
The Parachute gets its firmness level from its layers of coils. It has a layer of individually wrapped microcoils that offer some nice pressure relief, and supporting those coils below is a layer of pocketed coils that offers some nice springy support. Above the layer of microcoils, the Parachute has a layer of New Zealand wool, which gives it some nice pressure relief.
I’d also like to mention that the Parachute has a zoned support system. It’s designed to be softer at the head and foot of the bed, with more support at the hips and lumbar region. This is good news for back and stomach sleepers, who will want to keep their hips from sinking too far into the mattress.
Testing the Parachute Mattress
To give you the most objective look possible, I put the mattress through some of our expert tests to assess its pressure-relieving properties and motion transfer abilities. I’ll tell you how this mattress performed and exactly what those results mean.
Pressure Relief
Pressure relief refers to a mattress’s ability to alleviate tension at pressure points. Depending on your preferred sleeping position, you’ll want to relieve pressure at the hips, shoulders, or lower back.
To test the Parachute’s pressure relief, I used a pressure map. A pressure map sits on top of the mattress and shows the amount of pressure in different areas on the body. The map turns blue for low pressure, green for medium-low, yellow for medium-high, and red for high pressure.
Back – I felt some nice pressure relief while laying on my back on the Parachute. My back felt supported, which is important for back sleepers, who want their spines to stay in a neutral alignment.
Side – The Parachute wasn’t all that comfortable on my side. As you’ll see in the graphic above, there was some green at my hips, which shows that there was a bit of pressure there.
Stomach – I felt comfortable sleeping on the Parachute on my stomach. I think the Parachute’s springy support makes it a nice option for stomach sleepers, whose hips should stay in line with their shoulders on this mattress.
The Parachute is a hybrid mattress that has a traditional innerspring feel. It's made with eco-friendly materials and has a bouncy and supportive feel.
Motion Transfer
Up next is the results of our motion transfer test. Motion transfer refers to a mattress’s ability to absorb movement. If a mattress has high motion transfer, you’re likely to feel movement from a partner or pet on your side of the bed.
To demonstrate motion transfer, I dropped a steel ball from three different heights and measured the amount of movement with a seismometer on the opposite side of the bed. As you’ll see in the chart below, each ball drop height is meant to mimic a different movement you’re likely to experience in bed.
These are pretty high motion transfer results, which means I don’t think the Parachute is a good option for anyone who sleeps with a partner or pet. If that’s you, I’d recommend checking out our best mattress for couples page.
Edge Support
If a mattress has good edge support, you’ll feel just as supported on the sides of the bed as you do in the middle. This is an important factor to consider for heavier sleepers or couples, who will probably want to take advantage of the full mattress surface area.
The Parachute has great edge support, which doesn’t come as a surprise thanks to its layers of pocketed coils and individually wrapped coils, which provide support on every inch of this mattress.
What is the Parachute Mattress Made Of?
Now that you know how this mattress performs, let’s take a look at its construction. A mattress’s construction can tell you more about what gives it a unique feel, helping you make an informed buying decision. Also, eco-minded shoppers might want to know whether or not a mattress is made with organic or sustainable materials.
The Parachute is a foam-free hybrid mattress made with eco-friendly materials. It uses coils to provide springy support and wool for cozy comfort. Let’s take a look inside.
Cover – The Parachute has a quilted organic cotton cover that offers some nice breathability.
Comfort Layer – Its top layer is made with pure New Zealand wool, which has a cozy feel and provides some nice pressure relief.
Transition Layer- The transition layer is made of pocketed microcoils which help provide some nice pressure relief. They contribute to the Parachute’s zoned support system, as some of the microcoils are softer while others are firmer. There’s also a layer of flame-resistant and hypoallergenic wool layer under the microcoils.
Support Layer- The parachute has a support layer of pocketed steel coils, which allow for airflow through the mattress and offer some great support for proper spinal alignment.
Foundation Layer – A flame-resistant and hypoallergenic wool insulator pad helps protect the layer of pocketed coils.
My Final Thoughts about the Parachute Mattress
Before we wrap up this review, I’d like to note some of my favorite things and complaints about the Parachute mattress.
My favorite things about the Parachute mattress
I really like the Parachute mattress for stomach sleepers and back sleepers. Its zoned support system will provide these sleepers with support where they need it at the hip and lumbar region, and gentle pressure relief at the shoulders and feet. It’s also quite bouncy, making it a nice option for stomach and back combination sleepers, who will be able to switch positions with ease. It also has great edge support, which is a nice feature for heavier sleepers who will want to take full advantage of the mattress. Finally, I think eco-friendly mattress shoppers will like this mattress’s organic and natural materials.
My complaints about the Parachute mattress
I don’t think the Parachute is a good mattress for side sleepers, who are likely to find it too firm for their liking. I’d also steer couples to a different mattress, since the Parachute isn’t great at isolating motion. I think those who like the contouring feel of foam mattresses might want to choose a different mattress retailer. The Parachute is also one of the more expensive mattresses that I have reviewed, so budget-minded shoppers might want to look for cheaper mattress alternatives.
