Is the Awara Premier a Good Mattress for You?
There are a lot of different mattresses out there. Depending on your body weight, height, and preferred sleeping position, they’re all going to perform differently for you.
Who I recommend the Awara Premier mattress for
- This is a great fit for back sleepers. It’s comfortable and firm, giving these kinds of sleepers the support they need for their hips.
- If you’re a combination sleeper, switching from your back to your stomach, the Awara Premier offers the responsiveness you need. It’s easy to move around on and a nice option for both back and stomach sleepers.
- The Awara Premier is a wonderful choice if you’re looking for an eco-friendly product and “being green” is important to you. Its materials are natural, organic, and non-toxic. And if that wasn’t enough to help out Mother Nature, Awara plants ten trees with every mattress purchase!
Who I don’t recommend the Awara Premier mattress for
- If you like a soft mattress, then I’d look at other options. Although it’s softer than the original Awara, it’s still a little firmer than average and may be too firm for a lot of side sleepers out there especially.
- I wouldn’t recommend this mattress to any memory foam lovers out there. The Awara Premier has latex foam and coils inside, which don’t offer that same “sinking in” feeling that a memory foam mattress does.
- Although a great deal for its quality, the Awara Premier does run a little pricier than some other hybrid options on the market. If you like the overall look and feel of this mattress but are shopping on a budget, you can check out our review of the original Awara. It’s a similar option for less money. How Firm is the Awara Premier Mattress?
Now that we have an overview of the Awara Premier, let’s go over its firmness and feel. Firmness can be dependent on a person’s body type and preferred sleeping position. Because of that, we like to poll a range of folks at Sleepopolis to rate the firmness of a mattress.
We each gave a firmness level score between 1 and 10, with 10 being the most firm and 1 being the softest. We averaged our scores together to come up with the final number which you can see below.
Overall, the Awara Premier falls at 7 out of 10 on the firmness scale. A 6.5 is the industry standard for medium-firm. So the Awara Premier is a tad bit firmer than average, but it’s a tad softer than the original Awara.
The Awara Premier offers an “on top” of the bed feeling, rather than a “sinking in” feeling. This means sleepers should be able to easily move around on the bed.

While the firmness level is helpful knowledge when considering a new bed, there are a handful of other components that are important to review. I also tested the Awara Premier for pain relief, support in different sleeping positions, performance for couples, and more.

Different sleeping positions and weights require different amounts of support. See below how the Awara Premier performs for sleepers of different weights.
Is the Awara Premier a Good Mattress for Light Sleepers (Under 130 pound)?
- Light Back Sleepers – I think the Awara Premier would be a nice option for these sleepers. The euro top cover adds some cushion while the latex and innerspring offer support to keep these sleepers’ hips in alignment.
- Light Side Sleepers – This mattress is too firm for most light side sleepers and lacks the ability to provide the needed contouring and pressure relief at their shoulders and hips. I think these sleepers should look for a softer option.
- Light Stomach Sleepers – I think this mattress is a great option for light stomach sleepers. The firm build seen here will definitely be sturdy enough to keep light stomach sleepers’ hips up and promote healthy spinal alignment.
Is the Awara Premier a Good Mattress for Average Weight Sleepers (130 – 250 pound)?
- Average Weight Back Sleepers – I think average weight back sleepers will really enjoy the Awara Premier. It is firm enough to prevent sagging, while offering some give at the lumbar region to provide back pain relief.
- Average Weight Side Sleepers – Even though it’s softer than the original Awara, I still find the Awara Premier to be too firm for this kind of sleeper. They’ll want to find a softer option to allow for deep sinkage and relief for pressure points.
- Average Weight Stomach Sleepers – This bed is a good option for average weight stomach sleepers. It’s firm enough to keep their hips elevated and spine aligned.
Is the Awara Premier a Good Mattress for Heavy Sleepers (over 250 pound)?
- Heavy Back Sleepers – This mattress has strong support and a nice “on top” of the bed feel that a lot of heavy back sleepers should enjoy.
- Heavy Side Sleepers – Heavy side sleepers might also like this mattress. Due to their heavier weight, they’ll likely experience a bit more sinkage into the bed, which will relieve pressure and give a cradling feel.
- Heavy Stomach Sleepers – Heavy stomach sleepers need a firmer bed to prevent excess sinkage at the hips. I recommend these sleepers take a look at our best mattresses for heavy people.
Awara Premier Pain Relief Performance
Pressure relief refers to how a mattress can help alleviate tension at the shoulders, hips, and lower back. It’s important for all sleepers, but especially for those who experience pain at night or after a night’s sleep. To test out the Awara Premier’s pressure relief, I’m going to use a pressure map.
The test works by putting a pressure map on the mattress and moving around on it in different sleeping positions. The map will record how much force I’m putting on the mattress and produce a colored map with results. Blues and greens show low pressure while reds and oranges show high pressure.
Back Pain – I feel great when lying on my back on the Awara Premier. I think it does a great job allowing my hips to sink in the right amount, making it a nice choice for back sleepers with back pain. I found it to also be comfortable on my stomach. My hips stayed elevated enough to keep my spine in alignment, so I think stomach sleepers with back pain should like the Awara Premier. However, when lying on my stomach, you could see a lot of red pop up in the pressure map. This shows it could cause pain for side sleepers with back pain.
Shoulder Pain – The Awara Premier tested really well for back sleepers with shoulder pain. It should be a comfortable and supportive option for them. The same goes for stomach sleepers. However, there was a decent amount of red forming around my shoulder while lying on my side on the pressure map on the Awara Premier. This shows me it’s not a good option for side sleepers with shoulder pain.
Hip Pain – Back sleepers with hip pain should find comfort in the Awara Premier. The latex foam offers a good level of support and sinkage for these sleepers. Stomach sleepers with hip pain might want to look for a firmer option to keep their hips in better alignment with their spine. I’d also suggest side sleepers with hip pain to look for another option as the pressure map showed pressure forming in that area.
Awara Premier Performance for Couples
When sharing the bed with a partner, you’ll want to keep a few more things in mind while shopping for a new mattress. Features you’ll want to consider include motion transfer, performance during sex, cooling, and edge support.
Motion Transfer
Motion transfer refers to how movement carries from one side of the mattress to the other. If you share the bed with a partner or a pet, you’ll want as little motion transfer and as much motion isolation as possible. This especially applies if you’re a light sleeper!
To illustrate this motion transfer, I dropped a 10-pound steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches, and 12 inches and measured the disturbance it caused: the bigger the lines, the bigger the disturbance.
The Awara Premier did an average job isolating motion. What the results show me is you might feel your partner if they’re moving around in bed and you will very likely feel them getting in and out of bed.
Sex
Couples will want to be able to move around easily on a mattress while having intimate moments in the bedroom. The Awara Premier has a lot of bounce and responsiveness, which makes it a good option for sex.
Cooling
The Awara Premier does a great job of keeping things cool. From the organic cotton and wool in the top layers, to the natural latex, to the pocketed coils – they all work together to help control temperature for all you hot sleepers out there.
Edge Support
Edge support is a measure of how the perimeter of the bed supports your weight. It’s good for couples using the full surface of the mattress. The Awara Premier has great edge support. I think couples and heavier folks would both appreciate it.
What is the Awara Premier Mattress Made of?
The Awara Latex Hybrid is built to be non-toxic and eco-friendly. Everything is sourced from sustainable suppliers who make it a point to reduce their footprint during the manufacturing and delivery process. Let’s dig into the construction to see how these materials work together!
Cover – The Awara has a euro top cover made of organic cotton and 100% organic New Zealand wool. This cotton cover is soft to the touch and textured to help circulate air and keep you cool while you sleep.
Transition Layer/Comfort Layer (4” Dunlop Latex) – Latex is a fairly common material in the modern mattress, but GOLS-certified natural Dunlop latex certainly isn’t. By going the extra mile, Awara gives you the proven characteristics of Rainforest Alliance certified latex: durability, bounciness, and heat dissipation with the added benefit of being completely green. The Awara Premier has two more inches of this organic latex than the original Awara.
Support (8” Pocketed Coils) – Pocketed coils make this mattress bouncy, yet supportive. The coils here are individually wrapped, giving each spring a more flexible spectrum of movement. They also promote breathability and airflow to keep you cool at night.
Awara Premier Unboxing and Off-Gassing
The Awara Premier is a bed-in-a-box mattress, which means it will arrive compressed and will have to be unboxed at home. As with all bed-in-a-box mattresses, you’ll need to wait at least 24 hours for this bed to fully decompress.
Although none of the materials in this bed are known for off-gassing, a common smell that comes with a new mattress, the Awara Premier’s latex may have a bit of an odor when first unboxed. If you do detect an odor, I suggest unzipping the mattress cover and leaving the bed in a well-ventilated room for a few hours while the smell completely dissipates.

My favorite things about the Awara Premier mattress
I love that the Awara Premier is an eco-friendly and non-toxic bed. Along with being a “greener” option, the materials are high-quality and durable. I like how the bouncy coils and latex work together to make this a comfortable, yet responsive mattress for back and stomach sleepers. Hot sleepers should also enjoy this mattress as its individually wrapped coils promote airflow to keep things cool at night.
My Awara Premier mattress complaints
The Awara Premier is too firm for me personally. I sleep on my side a lot and need softer cushioning under my hip and shoulder. I think sleepers who prefer a softer mattress will want to keep looking.

- Avocado is not to be outdone in the use of natural materials. It features Dunlop latex and organic cotton just like Nest and Awara.
- The Avocado is slightly firmer than Awara, though not uncomfortably so. In my opinion, it has a durable construction, which is good news for stomach sleepers in need of spinal support.
