I’ll be sharing my thoughts on the Awara Premier Luxury Hybrid mattress. Awara’s premium offering features a plush cover, 4 inches of organic latex, and an 8-inch layer of individually wrapped coils. I would recommend this bed to most back sleepers, side sleepers, and heavier sleepers.

But is it as comfortable as it is green? I took the Awara Premier Luxury Hybrid mattress back to the Sleepopolis lab to find out.

I tested the Awara mattress and assessed everything from its construction and feel to its performance while sleeping. Read on to see if the Awara mattress is the right fit for your eco-friendly sleep setup.

Awara Premier Luxury Hybrid Mattress Overview

The Premier Luxury Hybrid mattress is Awara’s premium hybrid mattress. This mattress from Awara is 12 inches thick and features a plush cover layer, 4 inches of organic latex, and an 8-inch layer of individually wrapped coils to offer better responsiveness and support.

While testing the Premier Luxury Hybrid, I found that it offers excellent pressure and pain relief around the lower back and joints. Its latex and coil construction also helps manage temperature and keeps things comfortable.

I think most back sleepers, side sleepers, and heavier sleepers will have a great experience with this bed. I would not recommend this mattress to those with mobility issues, as I found its edge support somewhat lacking.

What Is the Awara Premier Luxury Hybrid Mattress Made Of? 

The Awara Premier Luxury Hybrid is a 12-inch mattress packed with premium organic materials, including a GOTS-certified organic cover, 4 inches of organic latex, and 8 inches of individually wrapped springs with thick gauge coils for added support and durability. Let’s break it down layer by layer.

Cover – The Awara Premier Luxury Hybrid’s cover combines organic wool with a rayon blend made from bamboo. I thought this cover was super plush and comfortable to lay on. However, I wouldn’t say it’s super breathable and airy. Thankfully, the bed’s coils should help promote airflow and cool things down.

Comfort Layer – The Premier Luxury Hybrid’s comfort layer features 4 inches of organic latex to promote proper spinal alignment and support pressure points and joints. I thought this mattress provided excellent support overall. My colleague, a back sleeper with chronic back pain, also felt great pressure relief around her lower back.

Transition Layer – Next up is the bed’s 8-inch layer of individually wrapped springs. Each spring features thick gauge perimeter coils for breathable support. When testing the Awara mattress, I found that the springs made the bed surprisingly responsive, even after sinking into its plush cover a bit.

Support Layer – The support layer features a lower comfort cover and reinforced, sturdy handles to make moving this mattress a lot easier.

Awara Premier Luxury Hybrid Mattress Firmness 

As with any feel factor, firmness is a subjective measure that can change depending on one’s body size, shape, and weight. In other words, my body is bound to differ from yours. To mitigate any bias and put a finger on how firm this bed actually is, I invited my colleague into the studio to test it out with me.

After taking the Awara Premier Luxury Hybrid mattress for a spin, my colleague and I decided it was a 6 out of 10 on the firmness scale. For reference, 6.5 or medium-firm is the industry standard. Its super-plush cover and latex comfort layer do a great job of softening up the firmness of the pocketed coil system.

When laying on the Awara mattress, I felt my body sink in slightly. However, I still felt supported and experienced good pressure relief in my lower back. My colleague also noted good pain relief in her lower lumbar area during our time with this bed.

Sleeping Position and Body Weight

We recognize that people come in all shapes and sizes, and people of every size deserve a mattress that works for their body type. We use the weight categories light, average, and heavy to more easily categorize sleepers based on how mattresses will perform for their body type, as most mattresses are designed for the group we call “average” (130 to 250 pounds).

As a general takeaway, lighter sleepers don’t require as much support as average weight sleepers, and mattresses will tend to feel firmer to them. On the other hand, heavy sleepers tend to need more support than average weight sleepers and tend to sink into the mattress more.

As far as sleeping positions go, side sleepers tend to need a softer mattress while stomach sleepers usually need a firmer, more supportive one. Back sleepers are usually somewhere in the middle.

Is the Awara Premier Luxury Hybrid a Good Mattress for Light Sleepers (Under 130 pounds)?

• Light Back Sleepers – This mattress should be soft enough for most light back sleepers who prefer a bed with a medium-firm feel. These sleepers should experience good pressure relief in their lower back and get plenty of support from the pocketed coil system.
• Light Side Sleepers – This mattress could work for lightweight side sleepers, thanks to its plush cover and latex comfort layer. However, lightweight side sleepers with sensitive joints may benefit from something softer.
• Light Stomach Sleepers – Since this mattress will likely feel firmer to light sleepers, lightweight stomach sleepers should have no issues getting comfortable on the Awara Premier Luxury Hybrid. These sleepers should get enough support from this mattress to keep their spine in proper alignment through the night.

Is the Awara Premier Luxury Hybrid a Good Mattress for Average Weight Sleepers (130–250 pounds)?

• Average Weight Back Sleepers – Average weight back sleepers should love the Awara Premier Luxury Hybrid mattress. These sleepers should experience minimal sinkage, good pressure relief, and lots of support.
• Average Weight Side Sleepers – I would recommend this bed to most average-weight side sleepers. It’s soft enough for sleepers with sensitive joints and offers plenty of contouring around the hips and shoulders.
• Average Weight Stomach Sleepers – This bed is a great option for average-weight stomach sleepers. As someone who falls into this category myself, I felt like I was “on top” of the mattress, and my spine stayed in proper alignment.

Is the Awara Premier Luxury Hybrid a Good Mattress for Heavy Sleepers (over 250 pounds)?

• Heavy Back Sleepers – Heavy sleepers will sink more into the bed’s cover, but they shouldn’t feel the coils since the bed is thick and durable. This mattress may be a good option for heavy back sleepers who prefer a softer bed, but I would recommend something firmer overall.
• Heavy Side Sleepers – This bed is fantastic for heavy side sleepers, especially those with joint pain. This mattress should feel super plush to these sleepers and offer plenty of contouring and pressure relief around their hips and shoulders.
• Heavy Stomach Sleepers – I would not recommend this mattress to heavy stomach sleepers. These sleepers would likely sink too far into the bed at night, which might throw their spine out of alignment.

Awara Premier Luxury Hybrid Mattress Performance

Now that firmness and feel are out of the way, it’s time to get into some of the other tests I performed on the Awara Premier Luxury Hybrid. I run numerous tests on every mattress we review to help readers get an objective view of what sleeping on them every night is like.

Awara Premier Luxury Hybrid Mattress Pain Relief Performance

Pain relief goes hand-in-hand with pressure relief. When we talk about pressure relief, we’re referring to a bed’s ability to relieve tension at pressure points at the hips, shoulders, and back. People suffering from shoulder or hip pain will need a mattress that provides good pressure relief. These beds feel gentler around those sensitive pressure areas.

To test the Awara Premier Luxury Hybrid’s pressure-relieving abilities, I placed a specialized mat across the mattress and laid on the mat in different sleeping positions. The mat then uses thermal imaging to show how much pressure builds on my body.

It changes from blue and green for low pressure (with blue signaling no pressure at all) to orange and red for high pressure (with red being the highest pressure). The three areas we cover are back pain, shoulder pain, and hip pain.

During this test, we found that the Awara Luxury Premium Hybrid can work wonders for back pain, as the graphic is primarily blue. This means there was barely any pressure buildup on our backs, making it a superb choice for sleepers with back pain.

The Luxury Premium Hybrid performed almost as well when we switched to our sides to see how it would work for hip pain and shoulder pain. However, I noticed more pressure buildup on my colleague’s shoulders, as indicated by the yellow spots in the graphic below. 

Motion Transfer

Motion transfer measures how much movement you will likely detect from one side of the bed to the other. If you sleep with a restless pet or have a partner who tends to switch between sleeping positions throughout the night, you’ll want a bed that can effectively trap motion. Prioritizing low motion transfer, or what we also call good motion isolation, can help you sleep soundly, no matter who’s moving around next to you.

Human Test

The first test is simple: I lie on the mattress with a colleague, switch between different sleeping positions, and see how much they feel me roll around. During this test, we take turns moving around on the bed while the other stays still to estimate how much motion someone might detect while sleeping with a partner.

The Awara Premier Luxury Hybrid passed the first test. I could barely feel my colleague get in and out of bed, and while I could notice some of her movements as she switched between sleeping positions, it wasn’t enough to cause a disturbance on my side of the bed.

Water Test

The next test is a fun one we call the “water test.” For this test, my colleague and I place a full glass of water on the mattress and see how much the liquid moves around with us. If the water has zero to little movement, it is safe to say that the mattress has low motion transfer, which is what you want to see.

During this test, we noticed a lot of motion getting in and out of bed. However, there was not as much movement in the glass when we moved around and switched between different sleeping positions. Based on these observations, I would say that individuals with restless partners probably won’t feel them moving around too much at night unless they get up for a glass of water, which is a plus for couples with combination sleepers.

Seismometer Test

The last motion transfer test is our seismometer test. This test involves dropping a 10-pound steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches, and 12 inches, then measuring the disturbance it causes. In this case, the bigger the lines on the graph, the bigger the disturbance and the higher the motion transfer.

The graph above shows a good amount of motion at the impact site, but it doesn’t carry over too far to the other side of the bed.

Responsiveness

Responsiveness refers to how quickly a mattress reverts to its original shape after applying pressure. Memory foam usually has a low response to pressure, while hybrid mattresses with coils tend to have a high response to pressure. Combination sleepers who frequently change positions in the middle of the night often prefer a responsive bed because it allows them to move around without much effort.

I found that the Awara Premier Luxury Hybrid is surprisingly responsive, especially for a softer mattress. While I sank into the plush cover and latex comfort layers as I tested this mattress, I had no trouble switching between different sleeping positions and rolling from one side of the bed to the other. I think combination sleepers who prefer a bed with a softer feel would enjoy this mattress.

Cooling

Many factors determine how cool a mattress stays when you sleep on it. The materials inside the mattress largely contribute to whether it traps heat or releases it. The Awara Premier Luxury Hybrid’s latex comfort layer and pocketed coil system help this bed stay breathable and cool.

I tested the Premier Luxury Hybrid with a thermal gun, a device that uses color-coded imaging to measure how much and how quickly a mattress heats up when someone lies down on it.

If it heats more than 15 degrees Fahrenheit, I consider it to have poor cooling capabilities. 10 to 15 degrees indicates decent cooling, 5 to 10 degrees indicates good cooling, and less than 5 degrees indicates excellent cooling.

After taking turns laying on the Awara mattress with my colleague, I saw the temperature go up about 9 degrees, meaning it should keep most sleepers cool at night. However, I would recommend one of our best cooling mattresses over this one to people who sleep extra-hot.

Edge Support

I also tested the edge support on the Awara Premier Luxury Hybrid mattress. Edge support determines if you can sleep on the edge of the bed without feeling the side of the mattress collapsing under your weight. It can also help you assess its durability and whether it may sag over time.

I noticed the most sinkage on the edge of the bed, especially when laying on my side. However, I never felt like I was slipping off at any point. I also had the same experience when sitting on the corners of the mattress.

When I measured the sinkage with a yardstick, the layers sank only 3 inches when applying weight to the edge.

Overall, I think the edge support on the Premier Luxury Hybrid should work for individuals and couples who prefer to sleep in the center of the bed. I would not recommend this mattress for people with mobility issues, as the corners sink too much for them to easily get out of bed.

Awara Premier Luxury Hybrid Mattress Performance For Couples

I think the Awara Premier Luxury Hybrid is a solid choice for couples who gravitate toward the center of the bed. This mattress is also responsive enough for combination sleepers or couples who move around frequently at night. However, I would not recommend this bed to couples who are easily disturbed at night. While the motion transfer isn’t the worst, these sleepers will likely feel their partner’s movements at night.

My Final Thoughts about the Awara Premier Luxury Hybrid Mattress

Who I Recommend the Awara Premier Luxury Hybrid Mattress For

• I would highly recommend this mattress to light and average weight back sleepers. The Premier Luxury Hybrid’s latex comfort layer and pocketed coil system offer the perfect blend of pressure relief and support for these sleepers, especially around the lower back area.
• Heavier side sleepers should have a match made in heaven with this mattress. This bed is soft enough to cradle their shoulders and hips and keep the pressure off. The plush cover is also thick enough to prevent these sleepers from sinking all the way into the bed’s springs.
• Eco-conscious buyers will love the brand’s use of organic latex and wool that meet global environmental standards such as GOLS, FSC, and GOTS.

Who I Don’t Recommend the Awara Premier Luxury Hybrid Mattress For

• Heavier stomach and back sleepers will likely find this bed too soft. These sleepers need something firmer to ensure their spines stay supported and aligned as they sleep.
• I would not recommend this mattress for seniors or those with mobility issues. The edge support isn’t strong enough to give these sleepers the support they need as they get in and out of bed.
