Brand Snapshot

Brooklyn Bedding is a popular family-owned bedding brand that was founded in 1995, and it’s since become one of the most recognizable names in the industry. From sheets, pillows, and blankets to a wide variety of mattresses, Brooklyn Bedding has solidified itself as a go-to retailer for all basic bedding essentials.

While we at Sleepopolis have already tested many of these products, this review focuses specifically on the Brooklyn Bedding weighted blanket. And according to the folks who made it, this weighted blanket offers a “dual-therapy” design that lets sleepers choose between a cool side and a warm side. So without further ado, let’s dive into this blanket and see how it feels!

What Is The Brooklyn Bedding Weighted Blanket Made Of?

Before I discuss my experience testing the Brooklyn Bedding weighted blanket, let’s take a closer look at what it’s made of. In this section, I’ll detail the specific materials used in the cover fabric and weighted insert, and provide a little info about the therapeutic benefits of deep pressure touch!

Duvet Cover Fabric: Micromink & Tencel

This blanket’s duvet cover is the reason Brooklyn Bedding calls it a “dual-therapy” weighted blanket and, in my opinion, it’s a pretty neat idea.

One side of the duvet cover fabric is made of micromink, which is a super soft and warm material that feels like fleece. Meanwhile, the other side is made of 100% Tencel, a silky, cooling, and eco-friendly material derived from dissolved wood pulp.

This dual-sided construction is meant to offer sleepers a little variety, and give them the chance to choose between two distinctly different feels. I prefer the Tencel side because it’s very smooth and soothing on the skin, but the micromink side might be ideal for those looking for a warm and fuzzy feel. Personally, I like that the cover makes it feel like two blankets in one!

Not to mention, there are twelve ties inside the duvet cover that keep the weighted insert from shifting around. In my experience, duvet covers typically come with 4-6 ties, so I appreciate that this one comes with a little extra security. Afterall, you don’t want your weighted blanket sinking to the bottom of your duvet cover as you roll around in bed.

Plus, the duvet cover is removable and machine washable! When it gets dirty (or if you just want to enjoy the weighted insert on its own), simply untie the internal loops, throw it in a gentle wash cycle, and you’re good to go.

Weight Insert: Microfiber & Glass Beads

The weighted portion of this blanket is covered in 100% polyester microfiber, and filled with dozens and dozens of glass beads. In general, weighted blankets are either filled with glass beads or plastic pellets and, in my experience, I find glass beads to offer a more even distribution of weight.

This particular blanket is available in 15 and 20-pound options, and I’m testing the 15-pound blanket. But regardless of which you choose, each one features gridded stitching for a balanced distribution of pressure. Essentially, the gridded stitching keeps all the glass beads locked away in their individual squares rather than concentrated in one area.

Brooklyn Bedding Weighted Blanket Ties
The weighted insert is secured with twelve internal ties.

To pick the weight that’s best for you, simply go with the one that’s closest to 10% of your own body weight. It’s okay if it doesn’t match 10% of your weight exactly, but the closer you get, the more you’ll benefit from the healing properties of deep pressure touch.

Speaking of which, let’s talk a bit more about deep pressure touch and the science behind weighted sleep accessories.

Deep Pressure Touch

The weight of this blanket provides something called deep pressure touch (DPT), a therapeutic technique that triggers the release of melatonin and serotonin in the body. When activated, these hormones work in tandem to produce a relaxing sense of calm, which is why DPT is used to treat anxiety, sensory processing disorders, and restlessness.

But although weighted blankets are often marketed as great nighttime accessories, it’s important to note that they are not meant to replace your comforter. In fact, snoozing beneath them for more than 90 minutes at a time can actually desensitize to all the fantastic benefits of deep pressure touch, so I recommend using them for naps or daytime relaxation!

My Experience with the Brooklyn Bedding Weighted Blanket

My favorite thing about the Brooklyn Bedding weighted blanket is its duvet cover. Don’t get me wrong — the glass beads and gridded stitching provided a nice, even distribution of pressure that made me feel calm and cozy. However, the dual-sided cover is definitely the star of the show here.

When I wanted to curl up with the warm and fuzzy side, I wrapped myself in the blanket with the Tencel facing out. And if I got too warm or wanted to feel the cool, silky side on my skin, I just flipped it around. Essentially, this blanket’s dual-sided design let me pick between two very different feels, and I love that!

Snoozing beneath the cool side of the Brooklyn Bedding weighted blanket!

What I’m not so crazy about, though, is the sound of the glass beads clinking together. Again, I appreciated how the gridded stitching made for a balanced feel, but I could hear the beads moving around every time I shifted positions. In my experience testing weighted accessories, some are much quieter than others (and I have to say — this one is on the noisy side).

Aside from that, I really enjoyed my experience testing the Brooklyn Bedding weighted blanket. As a hot sleeper, I’ll admit I got the most enjoyment from the cool and soothing Tencel side.

The Verdict: The duvet cover let me enjoy both a warm and cool side, while the glass beads provided calming deep pressure touch. If you’re in the market for a weighted blanket, I heartily recommend this one!

Should I Buy the Brooklyn Bedding Weighted Blanket?

Now that we know what we’re working with, let’s recap the highlights of the Brooklyn Bedding weighted blanket so you can better determine if it’s the best fit for you:

  • Dual-Sided Cover – In my opinion, this biggest draw to this blanket is its dual-sided duvet cover. One side provides a warm and fuzzy feel, while the other is cool and silky to the touch. Plus, it’s easily removable and machine washable!
  • Gridded Stitching – The weighted portion of this blanket features gridded stitching that keeps all the little glass beads locked away in their individual squares. This makes for a balanced distribution of pressure, and prevents the weight from concentrating in any one area.
  • 12 Internal Ties– This weighted blanket has more internal ties than any I’ve ever tested! If you’re worried about the weighted insert sinking to the bottom of the duvet cover, keep in mind that twelve ties are keeping it locked in place.

Brooklyn Bedding Weighted Blanket Complaints

Of course, there are a few things to consider about this weighted blanket before you make your purchase:

  • Confusing Wash Care – On the brand’s website, sleepers are directed to spot-clean the weighted insert and machine-wash the duvet cover. But the wash care card that comes with your purchase instructs users to wash every component of this blanket… So, which do you do? Well, in my experience, the weighted portion of the blanket is typically spot-clean-only (so I’d go with that to be on the safe side).
  • Weight Options – Weighted blankets come in a variety of weight options, generally ranging from 5-40 pounds. Most of the models I’ve tested are typically offered in 15, 20, and 25-pound weights, but Brooklyn Bedding’s blanket only comes in 15 and 20-pound options. Obviously, that’s a smaller range, and those who weigh much more than 200 pounds might find that these blankets are too light.
  • Price & Trial – Keep in mind that Brooklyn Bedding’s 120-night trial period does not apply to sleep accessories — only mattresses. So there’s no way to try before you buy with this blanket, and it costs about $139-$149.

FAQs

Does the Brooklyn Bedding weighted blanket make you hot?

A lot depends on your body temperature, but the Brooklyn Bedding weighted blanket is designed to let sleepers choose between a cool side and a warm side. Those who run hot might find that the cooling Tencel side of this blanket is most comfortable.

Can I wash the Brooklyn Bedding weighted blanket?

Feel free to wash the removable duvet cover on a gentle cycle with mild detergent, and then allow it to tumble dry on low heat. The weighted insert itself, however, must only be spot cleaned.

How long should you use the Brooklyn Bedding weighted blanket?

In general, weighted blankets should be used for about 30 minutes at a time, with 90-minute breaks in between. Additionally, you should choose the weighted blanket that’s closest to 10% of your own body weight in order to benefit from the healing properties of deep pressure touch.
