What is the Birch Natural Mattress Made Of?
The Birch is an 11-inch tall natural latex hybrid mattress made with organic materials. This bed is also Greenguard Gold certified, which means it won’t release high levels of chemical emissions or volatile organic compounds into your home. This is great for peace of mind at night, especially when buying a bed-in-a-box mattress.
But enough chat. Let’s take a closer look at each of this bed’s allergen and plastic-free layers.
Cover – The Birch is made with an organic cotton cover. It feels soft and breathable, plus has a little stretch to it. It’s also quilted with wool fibers to make the material fire-retardant.
Comfort Layer – Next up is a comfort layer made of organic Birch wool. This layer offers some nice pressure relief, plus does a great job wicking moisture and absorbing body heat. This layer helps regulate temperature and keep you cool at night.
Transition Layer – Underneath the wool comfort layer, you’ll find a section of all-natural Talalay latex. This material has a quick response to pressure, so should meet your body with some fantastic bounce to position you more “on top” of the bed than “in” it. Latex also has natural cooling properties, and will encourage plenty of airflow in this bed.
Support Layer – The bulk of the mattress is made of a pocketed coil system. These tall coils offer plenty of firm support, plus make this bed even more breathable.
Base Layer – A thin layer of organic wool batting finishes off the construction. It mostly gives the coils something to bounce off of.
How Firm is the Birch Natural Mattress?
Next up, let’s talk a little about how this mattress feels. As far as feel factors go, firmness is one of the most subjective in the bunch, and can change a lot depending on one’s body shape, size, and weight. Therefore, I’m not just going to share just my firmness opinions with you; instead, I’m going to compile thoughts from myself and a few of my coworkers. The score you see below is the average of all our personal firmness ratings.
There was a surprising amount of variance in our responses, with ratings ranging from a medium-soft to extra firm. Personally, I gave the Birch a 7 out of 10 on the mattress firmness scale, and found it to be a firm mattress. For reference, I’m about 130 pounds.
In general, I’d recommend this bed to anyone looking for a firm mattress. If you’re especially light and stay more on top of the Birch’s wool layers, it could feel more medium-firm to you. The Birch is also very bouncy, which means combination sleepers who need to be able to change positions easily should like the feel of this bed.
Regardless of how firm you find the Birch, you’ll definitely feel lifted “on top of” this bed, rather than hugged or cradled by it. If you like a supportive feel, you should like the Birch. We recognize that people come in all shapes and sizes, and people of every size deserve a mattress that works for their body type. We use the weight categories light, average, and heavy to more easily categorize sleepers based on how mattresses will perform for their body type, as most mattresses are designed for the group we call “average” (130 to 250 pounds).
As a general rule, lighter sleepers don’t require as much support as average weight sleepers, and mattresses will tend to feel firmer to them. On the other hand, heavy sleepers tend to need more support than average weight sleepers and tend to sink into the mattress more.
As far as sleeping positions go, side sleepers tend to need a softer mattress while stomach sleepers usually need a firmer, more supportive one. Back sleepers are usually somewhere in the middle.
Is the Birch a Good Mattress for Light Sleepers (Under 130 pounds)?
- Light Back Sleepers – The Birch will likely feel firm and supportive to these sleepers. Back sleepers who enjoy a firm feel should be comfortable on this bed.

Is the Birch a Good Mattress for Average Weight Sleepers (130 – 250 pounds)?
- Average Weight Back Sleepers – These sleepers should also like the Birch. It will do a nice job helping them maintain a healthy spinal alignment throughout the night, and could also be a good choice for relieving back pain.
- Average Weight Side Sleepers – The Birch is much too firm for these sleepers, who will likely rest too close to its steel coil layer to feel comfortable.
- Average Weight Stomach Sleepers – The Birch should be firm enough to help these sleepers keep their hips lifted up in line with their shoulders. This is great for alleviating back pain when you sleep on your stomach.
Is the Birch a Good Mattress for Heavy Sleepers (over 250 pounds)?
- Heavy Back Sleepers – The Birch is a great choice for these sleepers. They might find the Birch has a more medium-firm feel, and should get a nice balance of pressure-relief and support from this bed.
- Heavy Side Sleepers – These sleepers will most likely find the Birch uncomfortably firm. I’d recommend they check out our best mattresses for heavy people to find a softer option.
- Heavy Stomach Sleepers – This mattress doesn’t offer quite enough durability for these folks. While it may feel comfortable at first, it may let heavy sleepers’ hips dip below their shoulders during the night, which can lead to discomfort and soreness at the lower back.
Birch Natural Mattress Performance
A big part of what we do here at Sleepopolis is run a series of tests on each mattress we review. This helps our team of Certified Sleep Science Coaches get an objective view of what it would be like to sleep on them. These tests also allow us to make even more specific recommendations in addition to sleeping position and body type. Below, see how the Birch Natural performs in areas such as pain relief, motion transfer, cooling, and more.
Birch Natural Mattress Pain Relief Performance
An important component of a bed’s feel is how well it relieves pain in certain areas. A great way to measure a bed’s capacity for pain relief is to look at its pressure relief. Pressure relief is a measure of how a bed will feel against various pressure points on your body while you sleep, and it’s an effective way to measure how well a mattress will relieve pain.
To measure pressure relief, I like to use a good ol’ fashioned pressure map, a device that tracks my body’s interactions with a mattress in real time. Basically, I roll this baby out, hop aboard, and let the technology do the rest. It creates a map that shows areas of low pressure in blue and green and areas of high pressure in yellow and red. We cover three specific areas of pain: back pain, shoulder pain, and hip pain.
Based on these results, I’d say the Birch is a fantastic pick for sleepers with back pain (especially if they sleep on their backs or stomachs). While lying on it, I felt the Birch’s springs and bouncy latex kept my spine in a pleasantly lifted position.
Additionally, the map above indicates that the Birch could be a good pick for sleepers with shoulder pain. If you sleep on your back or stomach, the Birch could help relieve some pain in the hip and/or shoulder area. However, side sleepers with shoulder pain will find this bed much too firm.
Motion Transfer
Motion transfer is the amount of movement detectable from one side of the bed to the other. This is going to be an important section for all sleepers, but especially so for those who share their bed with a partner as it’ll let you know whether or not tossing and turning on the opposite side of the bed is going to disturb you.
Seismometer Test
To illustrate motion transfer, I dropped a 10-pound steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and measured the disturbance it caused: the bigger the lines, the bigger the disturbance.
These aren’t the best motion transfer results, which isn’t that surprising considering how bouncy this latex hybrid mattress is. While this buoyant lift makes for excellent mobility, it does mean that nighttime movements are going to ricochet throughout the structure. Easily disturbed couples may want to consider a bed with a thicker top layer of foam to help absorb some motion.
Responsiveness
We test each mattress’s responsiveness by pressing down on its top layer, removing our hand, and seeing how quickly the surface returns to its original shape. Memory foam usually has a low response to pressure, while hybrid mattresses with coils (such as the Birch Natural) tend to have a high response to pressure.
Responsive mattresses are usually good for sex since they make it easy to change positions and move around. These traits also make them good for combination sleepers who switch sleeping positions at night. We found the Birch Natural to be fantastic for combination sleeping and for sex, as its super easy to move around on and you feel firmly lifted up on top of it.
Cooling
It’s important for anyone who sleeps hot to have a top-tier cooling mattress. The Birch sleeps super cool, which is great news for hot sleepers and couples. Its natural wool and latex layers offer tons of breathability, and prevent this bed from trapping body heat.
Edge Support
Edge support is a measure of how supportive the sides of your mattress are. Strong edge support can make a bed feel larger, which is a perk for couples who like to spread out. The Birch had decent edge support. I’ve definitely tested beds with stronger edges, but I also felt pretty secure lying on the side of this mattress.
Birch Natural Mattress Performance For Couples
The best mattress for couples usually offers impressive motion isolation, enough bounce for sex, good temperature regulation, and sturdy edge support. The Birch Natural did really, really well in cooling and responsiveness, thanks to its latex construction. However, if you and your partner sleep close to the edge of the mattress or awaken each other easily at night, we suggest finding another option.

Who I Don’t Recommend the Birch Natural Mattress For
