New airweave Mattress Advanced Review

You might have heard of the company Airweave before – they designed the cardboard beds used by athletes at the Tokyo Olympics that sparked a lot of discussion. The company’s New airweave Mattress Advanced is not the cardboard bed version, but it’s still quite different from your typical mattress. The Japanese company specializes in unique, firm mattresses and other sleep accessories. This is their second mattress to hit the market.

But is the New airweave Mattress Advanced right for you? Read on to find out! Below, I’ll explain what this mattress is made of, how it feels, and who it might be best for. If you’re short on time, you can skip down to my review summary!

Is the New airweave Advanced a Good Mattress for You?

Airweave was founded by Motokuni Takaoka after he took over his uncle’s fishing line company and realized the resin fiber used to make fishing lines would be a great mattress material. That led him to create airweave’s unique airfiber material. The feel of it will work well for some sleepers, but it won’t work for everyone. So let’s start by talking about who I do and don’t recommend the airweave mattress for.

Who I recommend the New airweave Mattress Advanced for

  • This bed offers great support for back and stomach sleepers.
  • I would also definitely recommend this model for people looking for a really firm feel. It’s one of the firmest beds I’ve ever tested, which could be a bonus for sleepers who struggle with back pain.
  • If you move around a lot during the night, this mattress is responsive and will allow you to do so easily.

Who I don’t recommend the New airweave Mattress Advanced for

  • Side sleepers will likely find this mattress much too firm. I’d recommend they check out our best mattresses for side sleepers instead to find a softer option.
  • Sleepers with shoulder pain will need a more pressure-relieving mattress to alleviate stiffness. One of our best mattresses for shoulder pain might be a better fit.
  • If you’re looking for a traditional mattress with coils or memory foam, this isn’t it. The New airweave Advanced is unique in its construction and may take some time to get used to if you’ve only slept on traditional mattresses before.

How Firm is the New airweave Mattress Advanced?

Before we get started, remember firmness is subjective. A mattress will feel firmer or softer to different sleepers depending on their body weight, shape, and preferred sleeping position. To get an accurate idea of how firm the New airweave Advanced feels, I polled a range of coworkers and averaged our scores and firmness levels together.

It’s also worth noting there are three airfiber blocks in the New airweave Advanced that you can rearrange to customize the feel. There is a soft, moderate and firm option. You can flip them and arrange them to have different firmness levels for your shoulders, hips and legs depending on how you sleep. I’ll use the moderate level for this section. The New airweave Advanced also gives you the option of adding two soft pillow top layers, which I did.

An example of how you can configure the firmness level for the New airweave Advanced
An example of how you can configure the firmness level for the New airweave Advanced

With those soft layers and at the moderate level, I give the New airweave Advanced a firmness rating of 8.5 out of 10. We use 6.5 as the standard for medium firm, so this mattress is quite firmer than average. Airweave themselves call this their “premium extra firm mattress.”

The New airweave Advanced is the type of mattress that when you sit down on it, you’re not sinking in whatsoever. This mattress is also bouncy enough to easily change positions, which makes it a nice pick for combination sleepers or those who tend to move around in the night.

New airweave Mattress Advanced Performance

Now I want to go over a few performance factors, including support in different sleeping positions, pain relief, and performance for couples. See below how the New airweave Advanced does in these categories.

A closer look at the New airweave Advanced's airfiber® core
A closer look at the New airweave Advanced’s airfiber® core

Testing the New airweave Mattress Advanced in Different Sleeping Positions

Depending on your body type and preferred sleeping position, you’ll need a different type of mattress. Read on below to see which body weights and sleeping positions this bed will feel best for.

Is the New airweave Advanced a Good Mattress for Light Sleepers (Under 130 lb)?

  • Light Back Sleepers – Light back sleepers who like an especially firm feel might like this bed, which will help promote a healthy sleep posture.
  • Light Side Sleepers – This mattress is much too firm for light side sleepers. They’ll need something with a plusher feel to cushion their pressure points and prevent pain.
  • Light Stomach Sleepers – This mattress is a great option for these sleepers. It will really keep their spines aligned from head-to-toe, which is important for avoiding pain in this position.

Is the New airweave Advanced a Good Mattress for Average Weight Sleepers (130 – 250 lb)?

  • Average Weight Back Sleepers – Overall, I think the New airweave Mattress Advanced could be a nice option for average weight back sleepers who like a firm mattress. It should do an especially good job supporting their lower backs.
  • Average Weight Side Sleepers – The airweave mattress is too firm for these sleepers. They’ll need much more cushioning around the shoulders and hips to feel comfortable.
  • Average Weight Stomach Sleepers – These sleepers should really like the firm, supportive feel of this mattress. It will do a great job keeping their hips lifted up in line with their shoulders, which is a key to preventing lower back pain.

Is the New airweave Advanced a Good Mattress for Heavy Sleepers (over 250 lb)?

  • Heavy Back Sleepers – This mattress might not be supportive enough for heavy sleepers. Instead, I’d opt for a hybrid or innerspring mattress, or better yet, one specifically designed for heavy people — like the ones in our roundup of best mattresses for heavy people.
  • Heavy Side Sleepers – See above.
  • Heavy Stomach Sleepers – See above.

Airweave Mattress Pain Relief Performance

A bed that relieves pressure can also relieve joint pain, so I always like to measure pressure relief when I test out a new mattress. To test a bed for pressure relief, I use a pressure map, which uses heat mapping technology to show where pressure’s building across my body when I lay on a bed. Results are on a color-coded map: Blue/green for areas of low pressure, and red/orange for areas of high pressure.

Take a look at the results below, and then read on to see what that might mean if you sleep with pain.

Back Pain – The pressure map is mainly blue and green when I’m on my back, which is a great sign for back sleepers with back pain. If you’re a back or stomach sleeper with back pain, I’d recommend checking out the Airweave. A firm bed often helps sleepers with back pain keep their spines aligned and relieve pain. However, this will be too firm of an option for side sleepers with back pain.

Shoulder Pain – This mattress is much too firm for sleepers with shoulder pain. It won’t cushion your shoulders overnight, and may exacerbate pain in this area.

Hip Pain – Similarly, sleepers with hip pain need a much softer mattress to get relief. I’d recommend one of our best mattresses for hip pain instead.

New airweave Mattress Advanced Performance for Couples

The best mattress for couples will feature good motion isolation, enough responsiveness for sex, some cooling features, and strong edges. Read on to learn more about why each of those features are important, and to see how the Airweave performs in each area.

Motion Transfer

Motion transfer is a measure of how much movement you’ll feel from one side of the bed on the other. If you share a bed, this is a measure of how disturbed you’ll feel when your partner rolls around or gets out of bed. To test motion transfer, I put a seismometer down where you would be sleeping, then dropped a 10lb steel ball from various heights onto the other side of the bed.

The seismometer results show average motion transfer on the New airweave Mattress Advanced. Based on these results, I wouldn’t recommend this bed to easily disturbed sleepers who share the bed with a restless partner. However, I don’t think you’d be bothered by little movements here and there.

Sex

The best mattress for sex is bouncy and responsive, which makes it easy to move around. The New airweave Mattress Advanced is quite bouncy, which makes it a good pick for sex.

Cooling

Couples overheat more quickly than solo sleepers, so often prioritize a cooling mattress. The New airweave Advanced’s unique build promotes a good amount of airflow, which means it’s very cooling. If breathability is a priority for you, you’ll definitely want to check out this bed. It does a great job of helping you maintain a lower body temperature throughout the night.

Edge Support

Edge support measures how close to the edge of the bed you can sleep without slipping off. Strong edges make a bed feel larger, which is a perk for many couples. The Airweave mattress has good edge support, I was able to roll all the way to the edge without worrying about the side collapsing.

What is the New airweave Mattress Advanced Made Of?

The New airweave Mattress Advanced is not your typical bed-in-a-box model. Below, I’ll break it down layer-by-layer.

Cover — The airweave’s machine washable outer cover is made of 100% polyester. The inner cover is made of 70% rayon and 30% glass fiber. Overall, the cover gives a thick, soft and cushioning feel.

Soft Layers — Next up comes two optional soft layers made of polyester. They add a slight cushiony feeling and some pressure relief, which helps temper the firmness of the mattress.

Core — The bulk of the mattress is made with an airfiber® core. This is a 100% polyethylene material—a food grade and non toxic plastic. The airfiber is interwoven to help you move around easily and evenly distribute your weight. The material looks like a sort of tangled, woven mass of the plastic threads. The airfiber core is really bouncy, which helps create that firm feeling, and air space between all the woven threads makes it feel quite breathable and creates a cooler sleeping experience.

Airweave Mattress Unboxing and Off-Gassing

The New airweave Mattress Advanced ships in three boxes and arrives decompressed. You’ll receive three airfiber blocks that you’ll place inside the mattress cover and then cover with the optional soft layers. Assembly is easy and the blocks aren’t too heavy or difficult to manage.

As I mentioned earlier, the mattress’s three core blocks each have a different firmness level on one side (soft, moderate, and firm). You can flip and arrange them to have different firmness levels for your shoulders, hips and legs depending on how you sleep. To help figure out what works best for you, Airweave has a section on their website where you scan a QR code or download an app called MattressFit to do a virtual fitting. You upload pictures of yourself and the app does an analysis to help customize the firmness levels in the mattress to your specific body type.

Because the New airweave Advanced ships decompressed, you won’t have to worry about any off-gassing smell after you unpack it. Plus, it will be ready to sleep on right after assembly. That’s uncommon for a bed-in-a-box, so it’s a great perk!

My Final Thoughts about the New airweave Mattress Advanced

Well folks, that just about wraps up my review! But before we say goodbye, let’s go over my favorite (and least favorite) things about this bed.

My favorite things about the New airweave Mattress Advanced

I really like how sleepers can customize the firmness of the bed by arranging the three different firmness blocks to their liking. It’s also helpful Airweave has an app to help people find the right firmness configuration for their body type and sleeping position. The airfiber material is cooling and supportive, which makes this mattress a great choice for stomach sleepers, back sleepers, and hot sleepers. If you’re looking for a very firm mattress and want to try a model that’s nontraditional, this bed is a great choice for you.

My New airweave Mattress Advanced complaints

On the other hand, this bed is too firm for me personally. When I laid on my side, the pressure map showed pressure building around my hip and shoulder. If you’re someone who prefers a bit more cushioning or softness, this mattress will feel much too firm to you.

New airweave Mattress Advanced Policies and FAQs

What are Airweave’s shipping, trial period, returns and warranty information/policies?

The New airweave Advanced ships free in three boxes (62” x 17” x 29.5” each) to most of the U.S. and comes with a 100 night trial. Your new Airweave mattress will take about 10 business days to arrive (but king and cal king sizes will take up to 14 days to arrive). Airweave does not currently ship to Alaska, Hawaii, or Canada. You have to try the mattress for at least 30 nights before returning it and then you’re eligible for a full refund if you’re still not satisfied. If you keep it, you’ll get a 10-year limited warranty.

Does the airweave work with an adjustable base?

No, the airweave is not made to be an adjustable bed and the material inside won’t conform to a frame in a high-seated position.

Where are Airweave mattresses made?

Airweave mattresses are made in Japan.

How do you wash the Airweave cover?

Simple! You just unzip it, pull it off, and then machine wash it.

What happens if parts of the mattress start to feel worn out?

Since there are three blocks in the mattress, the company says you can replace those individually rather than having to buy a new mattress if it feels worn down past your 10-year warranty. This is one example of how Airweave promotes sustainability.

How do the sections remain together without separating?

The sections are held together within the inner and outer covers of the mattress. By the way, iIt takes less than 10 minutes to set it up.

Airweave Mattress Vs

Considering the Airweave but not totally positive it’s right for you? Take a look below to see how it compares to two other firm mattresses, the Plank and the Saatva.

Airweave Mattress vs Plank Mattress

  • The Plank from Brooklyn Bedding is an all-foam bed-in-a-box mattress with an ultra-firm feel.
  • The Plank is flippable, and features a firm and extra-firm side.
  • Like the Airweave, this bed is a great pick for stomach sleepers.
  • Learn more in our Plank mattress review.

Brooklyn Bedding Plank Mattress

The Plank mattress is an all-foam, flippable mattress with a firm side and an extra-firm side, which makes it great for both back sleepers and stomach sleepers. Both sides of the mattress should provide stomach sleepers with the right amount of support needed, while back sleepers will be happiest on the firm side.

Airweave Mattress vs Saatva Mattress

  • Unlike the Airweave, the Saatva is an innerspring mattress and does not ship in a box.
  • The original Saatva mattress comes in a Plush Soft, Luxury Firm, and Firm model. The firm model feels similar to the Airweave.
  • Stomach and combination sleepers should like the firm, bouncy Saatva mattress.
  • Learn more in our Saatva mattress review.

Saatva Mattress

The Saatva’s coil-on-coil construction provides a classic innerspring feel. It's a good option for combo sleepers, who will want to feel free to switch positions and avoid feeling “stuck” in the mattress. It comes in three firmness levels, so you should be able to find one that suits your needs.

Other Models from Airweave

As I mentioned at the beginning of this article, Airweave sells another mattress model (and mattress toppers). You can find more information about Airweave’s other mattress below.

New airweave vs New airweave Advanced

  • With an 11” height, the New airweave Advanced is 3.1” taller than the New airweave mattress.
  • The New airweave Advanced comes with two optional top soft layers, while the New airweave comes with one.
  • The New airweave does not have the option to customize firmness levels and is a softer (yet still firm) mattress option.
