If you’ve been on social media lately, you may have seen a few videos discussing the viral Pillow Cube. People are going crazy over this cube-shaped pillow that’s supposedly giving side sleepers a better night’s sleep. Although the brand is called Pillow Cube, they also sell an assortment of mattresses, bedding, and even a sleep supplement.
With all the internet buzz, we wanted to know if this pillow lived up to the hype. In this Pillow Cube review, I’m testing out the 5-inch Pillow Cube Sidekick, the brand’s travel pillow. I’ll cover what the pillow feels like, who I think would enjoy it, and who may want to avoid it. As you may already know, pillows are not a “one size fits all” product. The right pillow for you is mainly dependent on your preferred sleeping position as well as your body type. Depending on these factors, the Pillow Cube Sidekick may or may not be a good choice for you.
Who Should Try the Pillow Cube Sidekick
- Side sleepers: This pillow was specifically designed for side sleepers, and I think it does a good job of providing head and neck support and promoting spinal alignment in this position.
- Some back sleepers: Back sleepers who enjoy pillows with a tall loft may enjoy this pillow. However, those who don’t like feeling “propped up” may dislike the height of this pillow.
- Frequent travelers: I think people who want the best sleep on planes or in the car will enjoy this small pillow. It’s smaller than a normal bed pillow and is great for naps on the go.
Who Should Not Try the Pillow Cube Sidekick
- Stomach sleepers: I think this pillow is way too tall for stomach sleepers, who may find their neck craning uncomfortably upwards.
- Combination sleepers: This pillow is likely too small for combination sleepers. As a combination sleeper myself, I fell off the pillow whenever I tried rolling over.
- People who like a softer feel: This pillow is basically a square of dense memory foam. If you want a moldable pillow with a fluffy, down-like feel, you won’t find it here.
What Does the Pillow Cube Sidekick Feel Like?
Now that we’ve covered who this pillow may be best for, let’s talk about what it feels like. Remember, feel is subjective and the firmness of a pillow may vary depending on who is sleeping on it.
Pillow Cube Sidekick Firmness
When trying a new pillow, firmness is one of the first things you’ll notice. Your ideal pillow firmness directly correlates to your sleeping position. Side sleepers typically need a firm pillow, back sleepers need a medium pillow, and stomach sleepers do best on a soft pillow.
I found this pillow to have a medium-firm feel. It has a memory foam core, so it has a really good balance between support and sinkage. I liked how my head could sink into the foam a little bit while still feeling very supported. The foam used is fairly bouncy and doesn’t have the slow-rising quality that some memory foam pillows have.
Pillow Cube Sidekick Loft
A pillow’s loft refers to how tall or short the pillow is and we categorize loft as high, medium, or low. Side sleepers typically need a high loft, back sleepers need a medium loft, and stomach sleepers need a low loft, in order to maintain spinal alignment.
This pillow is offered in two loft options: Standard (five inches) and Thick (six inches). Pillow Cube recommends the Standard loft to anyone 6 foot 3 or shorter. They only recommend the Thick loft to people 6 foot 4 or taller. The thick option may also be best for people with broad shoulders who need more space. I tested the Standard loft, which is five inches tall. This pillow is definitely classified as a high loft.
Side — I think the combination of a high loft and a cube design makes for a side sleeper heaven. Side sleepers should appreciate how the pillow fills in any gaps between the head and neck, which allows them to be supported everywhere. The high loft can also help keep the spine in a straight line, which is great for avoiding neck and shoulder pain.
Back — Back sleeping on this pillow was fairly comfortable, and I think back sleepers who want a high loft can enjoy this pillow. However, I did have a bit of neck pain after back sleeping on this pillow, which is likely due to the raised angle it put my neck at.
Stomach — Stomach sleeping on the Pillow Cube Sidekick was not very comfortable. The high loft caused my neck to crane upwards, and I had a lot of neck pain in this position. Under the Arm — I really enjoyed sleeping with this pillow under the arm. It’s smaller than a traditional pillow, which made it the perfect size to hold throughout the night. I also like the responsiveness of the foam, which was great for squeezing and hugging.
Between the Legs — This is an okay pillow for between the legs. I found the tall cube to be a bit awkward. It’s a very small pillow, so you have to place it in exactly the right spot or else it will slide off. It’s also a tall pillow, and I found it provided almost too much space between the legs for comfortable sleeping. However, Pillow Cube does sell a Knee Cube Deluxe pillow that’s designed for under or between the legs.

What is the Pillow Cube Sidekick Made Of?
The Pillow Cube Sidekick has a very simple construction, with only one material inside its cover. As I mentioned before, the core is a cube of memory foam. It comes with a removable and machine-washable quilted polyester cover. Pillow Cube recommends using their pillows with one of their pillowcases, which fits the unique shape.
Is the Pillow Cube Sidekick Good for Hot Sleepers?
According to Pillow Cube, this pillow has a 60-degree temperature-regulating carbon core that is great for hot sleepers. I personally didn’t find this pillow cool to the touch, nor did I feel that my Pillow Cube kept me noticeably cool. Memory foam is typically a material that can trap heat and cause sleepers to overheat — however, I didn’t feel like I was any warmer than usual or sweating profusely on this pillow. Pillow Cube does offer the Sidekick in a model that’s designed for cooling. The Sidekick Ice Cube Pillow is made with what the brand calls “frozen fibers” that claim to let you sleep 10 degrees colder than usual.

Overall, I can see why so many people are excited about this pillow. If you’re a side sleeper who struggles to find comfortable and supportive pillows, the Pillow Cube may be a dream come true. I was impressed with this pillow’s feel. Its foam is soft enough to be comfortable but firm enough to support the head all night. I definitely think this is a good choice for side sleepers or back sleepers who want a higher loft.
