Amerisleep Mattress Similarities
There are a few similarities in construction, service, and other areas that you’ll find with any Amerisleep mattress you buy. The primary similarities are as follows:
Refresh Cooling Cover – the cover for all mattresses from the Amerisleep line is the company’s Refresh Cooling Cover. It aims to draw heat away and keep sleepers cool at night. The company also says the fabric uses minerals to help promote daily performance and energy.
Fire Guard – instead of using a chemical based fire retardant Amerisleep uses a specially designed fire sock on all mattresses. The fire sock is constructed using a combination of silica (sand) and rayon (man-made fiber constructed from wood pulp). The fire sock is designed to melt in the event of a fire, effectively smothering the flames. Amerisleep’s fire guard is certified with GreenGuard. GreenGuard certifies that the fire sock doesn’t put any harmful pollutants into the air, your room, or harm the environment.
Bio-Pur Foam – this 4.0 pound memory foam is present in every Amerisleep mattress. It’s a custom formulated memory foam designed to provide great cooling, comfort, and support. You’ll find anywhere from 2-3 inches of the Bio-Pur foam depending on the mattress. Be aware, that this differs from Bio-Pur+ foam, which is Amerisleep’s more advanced and costly foam. The Bio-Pur+ has a larger cell structure, further increasing air flow.
Surface Modification Technology (SMT) – this special foam addition is present on Amerisleep’s more advanced models, the Colonial and the Independence. It’s a special modification made to the Activus and transition foam layers via giant rollers. During manufacturing these rollers create channels into the bottom of the foam. These channels improve breathability and cooling in the mattress by allowing air to better flow through the mattress. Additionally, SMT helps to redistribute pressure points on the foam. This increases support in targeted areas where it is needed most.
Variable Pressure Foaming (VPF) – this is the process Amerisleep uses to make all of their mattresses. Most memory foam mattresses are created in the open air. VPF is closed off, giving Amerisleep greater control over the manufacturing process and removes any pollutants from the air that might otherwise get in your mattress. It’s this process that allows Amersleep mattresses to have extra large cellular structures, which is what allows them to sleep cool (note: they are without question the coolest memory foam I have ever slept on, and a top contender for the coolest mattress overall. VPF is a lot more than just a marketing gimmick).
Bio-Core Base – this support foam acts as a foundational layer for all of the mattresses. You’ll find anywhere from 6-9 inches of the Bio-Core base depending on the mattress.
The Basics – all Amerisleep mattresses have a competitive trial period, warranty, and other importance service offerings.
- Warranty – 20 years, 10 years full replacement & 10 years pro-rated. One of the best warranties available.
- Trial period – 90 days
- Refunds & Exchanges – both are offered within the 90 day trial period, 100% money back guarantee, however you are responsible for mailing the mattress back
- Made in the USA – all mattresses are 100% sourced and manufactured within the USA
- Organic & Green – all foams are plant based and have a GreenGuard certified fire sock
Amerisleep Mattress Comparison
The following mattress comparison chart lays out the major functional, design, and specification differences between each mattress that Amerisleep offers. There is no “best” mattress, there is only the best mattress for you. Your preferences and other sleep priorities will likely sway you towards one of these options.
Firmness is always subjective. Amerisleep rates their AS5 as their softest mattress and the AS1 as their firmest. Of course, this feel may be affected by body weight, shape, size, and personal preferences.

Amerisleep Mattresses
If you still need a little more information to help zero in on the best Amerisleep mattress choice for you, take a look at our brief summary reviews. These quick summaries detail the major distinctions and other factors of each Amerisleep mattress.
Amerisleep AS3 Hybrid Mattress Review
- Like the all-foam AS3, the hybrid AS3 model has a 3” memory foam comfort layer. This layer lets sleepers sink into the mattress a bit and provides body-contouring and pressure relief.
- The AS3 hybrid differs from the all-foam AS3 in two ways: It doesn’t have a transition layer, and it uses pocketed coils in its base layer instead of high-density poly foam.
- The pocketed coils create a bouncier mattress with more mobility than the all-foam AS3. Sleepers should feel like they’re on top of the hybrid version (as opposed to “in” it), and it’s easy to change positions.
- The hybrid AS3 is a touch softer than the all-foam AS3. Sleepers will sink into the memory foam layer for nice pressure relief.
- The hybrid model is a bit more expensive than the all-foam version.
The AS3 hybrid is Amerisleep’s newer hybrid version of its AS3 mattress. As noted above, it’s a touch softer than the all-foam AS3 and provides a lot of body-contouring and pressure relief while maintaining good mobility. This could be a nice option for side sleepers who are looking for plenty of pressure relief combined with support. It might also appeal to back sleepers who enjoy some contouring and a gentler feel.
Testing the Amerisleep Mattresses
Now that you have a general understanding of the mattresses in the Amerisleep line, let’s get to know them better! To understand whether a mattress is the best fit for you, it’s important to consider Pressure Relief and Motion Transfer. So let’s get to it!
Pressure Relief
First things first: What does pressure relief even mean? It’s all about a bed’s ability to alleviate tension at sensitive areas including the hips, lower back, and shoulders. It helps you know whether a mattress will ease pressure on various body parts so you can sleep comfortably in your preferred position.
To test the Pressure Relief on the Amerisleep line, I used a tool called a pressure map. I position this device on top of a mattress, climb on top, and let the map track my body’s force as I lie in different positions. Low-pressure areas are highlighted in blue, and the highest pressure areas show up as red.
Amerisleep AS1
Back – On my back, I’m feeling plenty of support combined with a touch of body-contouring from the memory foam comfort layer. My weight is evenly distributed, my spine is aligned, and I don’t feel any pressure hot spots. This could be a great option for strict back sleepers who like a firmer feel.
Side – I’m feeling some pressure when I lie on my side. I expected this, because the mattress is pretty firm and doesn’t allow for much sinkage around the shoulder — leaving me feeling a bit “jammed up” in that area. Side sleepers will probably want to consider the softer AS3, AS4, or AS5 to get adequate pressure relief. You can also read through our best mattress for side sleepers list to find the mattress for your side sleeping needs.
Stomach – When I’m on my stomach, my weight feels evenly distributed. The firmer support keeps my hips elevated and aligned with my spine, so my back stays comfortable. This mattress should be well suited to strict stomach sleepers.
Amerisleep AS2
Back – When I’m on my back, I sink into the memory foam for a touch of body-contouring. That comfort doesn’t come at the expense of support — the firmness of this mattress keeps my hips elevated and aligned with my spine. This could be a great option for back sleepers or combo sleepers who switch between their back and stomach.
Side – It’s easy to move from my back to my side, but when I get there I’m definitely feeling some pressure around my shoulder and hip. This mattress is probably too firm for strict side sleepers, who need more pressure relief around the hip and shoulder. Again, strict side sleepers should probably consider the AS3, AS4, or AS5 models.
Stomach – When I roll to my stomach, I’m once again feeling comfortable on this mattress. My weight is evenly distributed, and my hips are elevated and aligned with my spine. What’s more, the pressure map doesn’t show any hot spots. I think this could be a great option for folks who spend all night on their stomach.
Amerisleep AS3
Back – When I’m on my back, I feel like my weight is evenly distributed. I sink into the memory foam comfort layer just a bit and enjoy some body-contouring. At the same time, I’m feeling adequate support around my hips, so my spine feels aligned. This could be a great option for back sleepers.
Side – I feel comfortable on my side here, as I sink in a bit for body-contouring. The zoned support system gives me extra pressure relief around the shoulder and extra support at the hip, so my spine stays aligned. This could be a nice option for combo sleepers who switch between their back and side or for side sleepers who like plenty of support.
Stomach – On my stomach, I don’t feel any pressure points. But I also don’t feel enough support — my hips sink in a bit too far and throw my spine out of alignment. Strict stomach sleepers will probably want to look at the firmer AS1 or AS2.
Amerisleep AS4
Back – When I’m on my back, I gradually sink into the memory foam layer for some major pressure relief. At the same time, my weight feels evenly distributed. This mattress might be a hair too soft for strict back sleepers, but it could appeal to combo sleepers who spend part of the night in this position and like a gentle feel.
Side – This mattress really shines when I’m on my side. The thick memory foam comfort layer lets me sink in for some serious pressure relief around the shoulder and hip, which tend to be hot spots for side sleepers. Strict side sleepers (or combo sleepers who switch between their back and side) should feel comfortable on this mattress.
Stomach – On my stomach, I’m not feeling any pressure points. But that might actually be a negative in this position: The mattress is so soft that it lets my hips sink in pretty far, throwing my spine out of alignment. Strict stomach sleepers will probably want to stick to the firmer AS1 or AS2 models in order to get adequate support.

Amerisleep AS5
Back – When I’m on my back, I sink into the soft memory foam layer and enjoy plenty of body-contouring and pressure relief. My weight still feels evenly distributed, but there might not be quite enough support for folks who spend all night in this position.
Side – I’m really impressed with the performance of this mattress when I’m on my side. The soft memory foam lets me sink into the mattress and enjoy nice pressure relief around my shoulder and hip. This should be a great fit for folks who spend all night in this position.
Stomach – I don’t feel any pressure when I’m on my stomach, but I also don’t feel enough support. My hips sink into the soft comfort layer, which tweaks my lower back a bit and could lead to back pain. Strict stomach sleepers will want to look for a firmer mattress such as the AS1 or AS2.
Motion Transfer
Like Pressure Relief, Motion Transfer affects whether a mattress is a good fit for your sleep needs. This term refers to whether you’ll feel a sleeping partner’s movements if they shift around during the night. It’s especially important to consider motion transfer if you share a bed with a partner, child, or pet!
To test motion transfer on the Amerisleep line, I dropped a 10-pound steel ball from three heights: 4 inches, 8 inches, and 12 inches. These heights mimic different movements, from tossing and turning to getting out of bed or jumping on top of it. Next, I measured the disturbance caused by each of these drops. The bigger the lines, the bigger the disturbance!
Memory foam tends to perform well with motion transfer, because its slow response to pressure helps absorb movement. Each mattress in the Amerisleep line has a layer of memory foam, but they also have firmer poly foams (or bouncy coils, in the case of the hybrid) — so I was curious to see how these beds would perform on my motion transfer test. Overall, these mattresses seem to do a great job with motion transfer (especially the softer AS3, AS4, and AS5 models, which have thicker layers of memory foam). This line could be a great option for folks who share a bed with a partner.
Amerisleep vs
Amerisleep is one of the most popular mattress-in-a-box brands, but it’s certainly not the only company producing quality online mattresses. Let’s see how Amerisleep stacks up against some of its biggest competitors.
Casper
- Like the mattresses in the all-foam Amerisleep line, the original Casper is an all-foam, mattress-in-a-box.
- Both brands utilize memory foam, but the Casper’s memory foam layer is underneath a firmer layer of poly foam that has a quicker response to pressure than memory foam. This mobility could appeal to combo sleepers who need to change positions throughout the night.
- The feel and firmness of the Casper is probably most similar to the AS3. It has a medium firm feel — again, this could appeal to combo sleepers, who need a balance of comfort and support in multiple positions.
- Casper has a polyester cover. While this material is durable, it’s not quite as breathable as the Amerisleep’s covers.
- Casper is more affordable than Amerisleep.

Nectar
- The Nectar is an all-foam mattress-in-a-box, just like the beds in the all-foam Amerisleep line.
- While both mattresses use memory foam, Nectar uses much more of it. The thick layers of memory foam let sleepers sink deep into the mattress to enjoy pressure relief and body-contouring. This construction is most similar to the Amerisleep AS4, and both options are well suited to side sleepers looking for serious pressure relief.
- The Amerisleep will probably sleep cooler than the Nectar, thanks to its open-celled memory foam and breathable cover.
- Nectar is more of a value brand than Amerisleep, so it’s more budget-friendly.
- Read all about it in our Nectar mattress review.
We recommend this mattress for the following sleeper types: Financing options are available for this mattress. I dreaded paying for a new mattress but my old one was 15 years old…buying a Nectar was the best choice I could have made! It is so comfortable and didn’t cost an arm and a leg. I would absolutely recommend this mattress to anyone!
The original Nectar mattress is a pressure-relieving, yet supportive, bed. It’s made with a thick layer of therapeutic memory foam, which offers sleepers plenty of support and decent body contouring.

Is An Amerisleep Mattress Right For You?
Alright, you’ve nearly made your way to the end of this review! Now just one question remains: Is an Amerisleep mattress right for you? I can’t answer that for you, but I can leave you with a summary of my pros and cons for this line of mattresses! These assessments apply across the all-foam line.
Pros
- These mattresses could appeal to memory foam lovers. Every mattress in the Amerisleep line (AS1 through AS5) uses memory foam in its comfort layer. No matter the firmness level you choose, you’ll sink in a bit and enjoy the body-contouring characteristic of memory foam.
- Amerisleep mattresses tend to sleep pretty cool thanks to the open-celled memory foam and breathable Refresh Cooling Cover. If you’re prone to overheating, this line could be a good option.
- As a general rule, Amerisleep mattresses do a nice job of isolating motion thanks to the memory foam, which has a slow response to pressure and absorbs a lot of movement. If you share the bed with a restless partner, an Amerisleep mattress could help you sleep undisturbed.
Cons
- The Amerisleep line doesn’t have the best edge support. If you need to utilize the whole surface of your mattress, you might want to consider a mattress with an innerspring build.
- The all-foam Amerisleep mattresses generally lack bounce. If you want to feel more on top of a mattress (instead of “in” it), then consider a hybrid mattress or innerspring mattress.
Our Review Process
Our Sleepopolis reviewers personally test each mattress. We start by unboxing the mattress to figure out how difficult (or easy) it is to get the mattress from the box to the bed. Then, we spend time laying on the bed in different positions, taking time to assess it on our backs, stomachs, and sides. Next, we perform our Sleepopolis tests, using specialized tools to measure qualities like motion transfer, bounce, and pressure relief. Our last step is to open up the mattress and take a look at each layer. These steps allow us to give our final verdict on the mattress. Jump back to our mattress picks.

FAQs
How long do Amerisleep mattresses last?
Amerisleep mattresses come with a 20-year warranty, but that may be a little ambitious. In general, it’s a good idea to replace most mattresses after 5 to 10 years, depending on how your body type and sleep position wear on the mattress.
Does Amerisleep need a box spring?
No. Like many mattresses-in-a-box, Amerisleep mattresses are designed to work on a slatted bed frame. That said, if you prefer using a box spring or you already own one, feel free to place an Amerisleep mattress on top.
Can you flip Amerisleep mattresses?
No, you shouldn’t flip an Amerisleep mattress. The bed is constructed to have firmer support layers on the bottom, so if you flip the mattress it will drastically change the feel. If you’re worried about wear, plan to rotate the mattress 180 degrees every six months.
Still deciding? Take a look at our mattress performance rating for the Amerisleep mattress line below.
Amerisleep Mattresses
Amerisleep mattresses are what a good memory foam mattress should be. They build on what sleepers love about memory foam…great contour / hug, good sinkage, excellent pressure relief, and solid support. However, they take it a step further with improved breathability, response, and cooling, resulting in a more comfortable sleeping surface. For those who love the feel of memory foam, but want to avoid the old stuck / hot feeling Amerisleep’s line of memory foam mattresses can be an excellent fit.
