All anyone wants is a good night’s sleep but one of the latest recalls to impact consumers might make that impossible.
On January 18, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission issued a recall notice for beds manufactured by Home Design, citing that the beds can break or collapse during use. Over 500,000 beds across the U.S. and Canada have been impacted by the recall, and 128 reports of the beds breaking or sagging during use have been received by the Indiana company so far (1). To date, 36 injuries have also been reported.
The impacted beds were sold between July 2018 and November 2023 by Wayfair, Walmart.com, and Overstock.com, with prices ranging from $100 to $300. Affected model numbers include:
- All Home Design Part number 80002 Tufted Upholstered Low Profile Standard Beds: a gray, warm gray, or blue bed frame that has standard support, requiring a box spring. It came in sizes twin, full, queen, and king.
- Part number 80032 Tufted Upholstered Low Profile Standard Beds: a gray or beige bed frame with standard supports, which did require a box spring, and was available in twin, full, queen and king.
- Part number 80055 Tufted Upholstered Low Profile Standard Beds: a silver gray, gray, or black bed frame with standard support that did require a box spring, only available in king size.
- Part number 80071 Tufted Upholstered Low Profile Platform Beds: a warm gray bed frame with platform support that didn’t require a box spring, and doesn’t have a center support leg along the side rail.
- Part number 80053 Tufted Upholstered Low Profile Platform Beds: a black, beige, or gray bed frame with platform style support, and no box spring required, available in twin, full, queen or king.
Consumers who are affected by the voluntary recall are asked to stop using the bed immediately and contact Home Design for a free repair kit, which includes new side rails and slats. The company states that they, “have tested these kits to make sure that they are effective in making the beds safe.”
Bed frames, based on this recall, are a much more important part of the bed purchasing process than people might think, as they keep you safe and secure during sleep. Bed frames often come in a variety of materials, such as metal or wood, and styles such as those above that do or do not require platforms, box springs, and have varying types of support systems. Prioritize a sturdy frame with support systems such as midway support legs, so the bed isn’t sagging, or worse, breaking during sleep.
