With its line-up of organic mattresses, Avocado has more than earned its reputation for sustainable luxury. But an organic mattress is like any mattress — it’s only worth it if it meets your unique sleep needs. And given the higher price point for a mattress like the Avocado Luxury Organic Mattress, it’s especially important to have an idea of performance before you hit that purchase button.
The Sleepopolis team has reviewed more than 330 mattresses and helped over 60,000 people find a great bed, and we turned the power of that collective experience on Avocado’s Luxury Organic Mattress. We used our medically approved testing methodology to carefully assess this organic hybrid from top to bottom and side to side, evaluating its materials, construction, performance, and even the buying experience. We also deferred to our chief medical advisor Dr. Raj Dasgupta, MD, FACP, FCCP, FAASM, for useful insights that may help readers like you understand the role different mattress features play in overall comfort.
Our team was wowed from the start with the Avocado Organic Luxury Mattress. We tested the standard model, which comes in what the brand calls a medium feel suitable for back and stomach sleepers. We found that to be true for lightweight sleepers in particular, though average-weight sleepers who sleep in any position are likely to be very comfortable as well. It also ticks all the boxes if you’re on the hunt for a sustainable new mattress that’s GOLS-certified and GOTS-certified.
Made with a whopping 17 layers packed with materials like organic cotton, wool, natural latex, and recycled steel coils, the Avocado Luxury Organic mattress is home run for those who value both luxury and sustainability. It should be especially comfortable for back sleepers, side sleepers, and combination sleepers who want a responsive mattress that makes it easy to switch sleeping positions.
What our tester says:
“The eco-friendly Avocado Luxury Organic Mattress delivers on the luxury. It’s a little over 13 inches tall, with up to 17 separate layers. We tested the standard model, but you can upgrade to a plush pillow top (14 inches) or an ultra-plush box top with Talalay latex (15.5 inches) for more firmness options.” – Jessica Timmons, contributor
Avocado Luxury Organic Mattress Overview
The eco-friendly Avocado Luxury Organic Mattress delivers on the luxury. It’s a little over 13 inches tall, with up to 17 separate layers. We tested the standard model, but you can upgrade to a plush pillow top (14 inches) or an ultra-plush box top with Talalay latex (15.5 inches) for more firmness options. There are no synthetic materials used in Avocado mattresses. Instead, you’ll find layers of organic Dunlop latex, organic wool, natural alpaca, silk, organic hemp fiber, organic cotton, and recycled steel innerspring coils. Of course, these premium materials mean a premium price tag. Before promotional pricing, a queen-size standard model is $4,799. Even on sale, the same size mattress was $3,839 at time of writing.
On the other hand, the mattress holds a number of impressive certifications — something that Sleepopolis chief medical officer Dr. Raj Dasgupta says to prioritize in the search for a high-quality mattress. The Luxury Organic Mattress is GOLS-certified (Global Organic Latex Standard), GOTS-certified (Global Organic Textile Standard), and certified GreenGuard Gold, OEKO-TEX Standard 100, The Climate Label, Made Safe, and the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC), among others. These serve as an assurance that the materials in this mattress really are as natural, ethical, and safe as they seem, and that can make the higher price tag reasonable for some folks.
Each Avocado mattress is made by hand in Los Angeles and ships flat, not compressed and rolled. Shipping costs apply and start at $249, which add hundreds of dollars to an already expensive mattress. That’s largely due to the materials and construction in the Luxury Organic Mattress adding significant weight. A queen-size standard model is 154 pounds, and even a twin XL is over 100 pounds, so having it delivered is probably the way to go.
Avocado Mattress Sleepopolis Scores
Avocado Luxury Organic Value
The value of a new mattress isn’t limited to its price tag. It’s that cost in relation to material quality, overall performance, and expected lifespan. The Luxury Organic Mattress is thoughtfully constructed with high-quality organic and natural materials. Many of them, including latex, wool, hemp, and cotton, are known for their durability, especially when compared to conventional materials like polyurethane foam and synthetic fabrics. In other words, while you pay more for this mattress, you can likely expect it to perform well for longer than the average mattress.
While $4,799 is a lot to pay upfront, the standard model of Avocado’s Luxury Organic Mattress should be a comfortable, supportive option for close to a decade, if not longer. Breaking down the cost of the mattress over its entire lifespan can give you a useful perspective, especially when you factor in the many certifications that make it safe, ethical, and sustainable.

What Is the Avocado Luxury Organic Made Of?
At our Sleepopolis testing studio, part of our testing methodology is to cut into the cover on the side of the mattress so we can take a look at the materials and construction.
Avocado sells the Luxury Organic Mattress in three models. They all use the same materials, but the plusher models have more layers (up to 17!) — and the company doesn’t explicitly detail what you’ll find in the standard model. When we cut into it, we were able to differentiate between six different layers.

Cover – The cotton cover is an organic cotton blend that’s soft to the touch. It has a beautiful quilted pattern that gives the mattress a cozy luxury vibe before you even touch it. This layer is bound to the others using needle tufting, a process that involves pulling ribbons through the mattress by hand instead of using adhesive.
Comfort Layer – Organic wool and natural alpaca fiber layers come next. The wool is Responsible Wool standard certified, and the alpaca fiber is ethically sourced in the Netherlands. An ultra soft layer of certified organic Dunlop latex comes next, then more wool, then a second layer of latex for support.
Support Layer – This layer consists of an innerspring unit made of individually wrapped coils. They’re 8 inches tall and made with recycled steel. They’re also arranged in ergonomic zones and reinforced around the perimeter. The base of the mattress is composed of an organic hemp pad for structure and support.
Avocado Luxury Organic Mattress Firmness
Firmness tends to be really subjective, since individual body types and sleeping styles influence how soft or firm a mattress feels. The firmness scale can serve as a useful baseline. It’s a scale of 1 to 10, with 1 indicating plush softness and 10 pointing to a very firm feel. A mattress with a 6.5 rating is considered a true medium-firm.
Avocado describes its standard Luxury Organic Mattress as having a medium feel, a 6 out of 10 on the firmness scale. Our in-house tester assessed the bed’s firmness on her back, side, and stomach. She agreed with the brand’s firmness rating when she tested the mattress on her back and stomach. “I have absolutely no pressure on my shoulders and lower back,” she said. “The top plush cover is so soft and comfortable that even without a pillow I had no pain in my neck. This mattress is definitely great on your back.” She thought it was even more comfortable on her stomach. “I am not a stomach sleeper at all, but this felt so good. I was perfectly aligned with my neck, spine and hips and didn’t experience any back pain,” she said. “I don’t feel constricted at all near my chest, which is my biggest problem sleeping on my stomach. This is very ideal for stomach sleepers who still want a medium-like feel.”
On her side, our tester found the mattress a touch firmer and rated it 6.5 out of 10. She said the mattress was soft and pressure relieving, but not so soft that she felt as though she was falling into it. “It felt more like a gentle hug with great contouring from the plush top,” she said, but she did notice a little pressure building in her shoulders. Just note that our tester is a lightweight sleeper, so people in the average and heavyweight weight classes might find these mattresses a touch softer. That makes them a good fit for side sleepers with a little more weight.

Avocado Luxury Organic Mattress Performance
Beyond materials, construction, and firmness, we consider a number of performance factors when we test a new mattress. We evaluated the Luxury Organic Mattress to see how it delivered on pressure relief, motion isolation, responsiveness, cooling ability, and edge support. Our findings help us make recommendations about the kinds of sleepers who might benefit the most from this mattress.
Avocado Luxury Organic Mattress Pressure Relief Performance
Dr. Raj Dasgupta recommends medium-soft to medium-firm mattresses with materials like memory foam or latex for the best pressure point relief, along with zoned support. The Luxury Organic Mattress checked these boxes, so we were anticipating high scores going into testing. Overall, it earned 4 out of 5 stars.
Our tester spent several minutes on the mattress on her side and on her back. As a lightweight sleeper under 130 pounds, she doesn’t usually have the weight to really sink into the mattress, which can affect its ability to effectively relieve pressure. That was exactly what she experienced with the Luxury Organic. “The mattress is soft and provides some pressure relief, but I had pressure in my shoulders and neck after lying there for a minute,” she shared, giving the mattress 3 out 5 stars. A side sleeper with a little more body weight will probably be more comfortable.
On her back, the Luxury Organic Mattress offered standout pressure relief. “My hips were perfectly aligned with my spine, neck and shoulders,” our tester said. “I could feel the contouring on my lower back from the plush top and first layers inside the mattress. It felt like a hug, but not a suffocating one.” She gave the mattress 5 out of 5 stars for pressure relief on her back.
Avocado Luxury Organic Mattress Motion Isolation
If you sleep alone, motion isolation may not be a particularly important feature in a mattress. But anyone who shares the bed with a restless partner or pet benefits from a mattress that keeps movement on one side from being felt on the other. Some materials and constructions are better at isolating motion than others — memory foam and all-foam beds, for instance, typically have better motion isolation than latex, hybrid, and innerspring beds. The Avocado Luxury Organic earned 3.67 out of 5 stars after three separate tests. Based on this, we might not recommend this bed to especially light sleepers who share a bed with a partner.
In the first test, our expert tester placed a basin of water on one side of the mattress. On the other side, she climbed in and out of bed and observed how her movements affected the water in the basin. The effects were minor, which earned the mattress 4 out of 5 stars.

Next, she observed the water while changing sleep positions — moving from her back to her side. These movements had a bigger effect on the water. “This bed does have some bounce to it, so when making aggressive adjustments moving positions, the water began to slosh around a little bit,” she said. She gave the Luxury Organic Mattress 3 out of 5 stars.
In the third test, we switched out the water with another tester. Our first tester rested blindfolded on one side of the bed while her partner got in and out of bed and moved around. “I couldn’t feel my partner getting in and out, but I could feel when she was changing positions,” she said. While she wasn’t jostled too much when her partner moved, she was aware of movement in the bed. Because she didn’t find it particularly disruptive, she gave the Luxury Organic 4 stars out of 5.

Avocado Luxury Organic Mattress Responsiveness
Responsiveness describes how quickly a mattress returns to its original shape after the release of pressure, which is what happens when you roll over or change positions. Some materials are slow-moving, while others are quick to bounce back. The Luxury Organic earned its highest score in this category, with a full 5 stars.
Our expert tester first assessed responsiveness with a switch test. She considered how easy it was to move between different sleep positions. “I didn’t struggle one bit trying to move between positions,” she said. “The soft plush top is comfortable, but it is not restricting at all. The innerspring coils provide a great responsiveness that will help you move from your back to your side. It’s not so bouncy that you feel jostled around, but just enough that it feels effortless to switch positions.” She gave the mattress 5 stars.
In the second test, our tester placed a 53-pound kettlebell on the bed and used a ruler to measure how far it sank. She measured 3.5 inches, which falls into the “moderate sinkage” category, earning the mattress another 5 stars. Again, with more weight, you can expect a little more sinkage, but overall, there is a reasonable amount of soft cushioning.

For the third and final test, she bounced a 25-pound steel ball onto the Luxury Organic Mattress from six feet above the bed. She used a yardstick on the wall to measure how far the ball soared from its first bounce. She measured 13 inches, which is considered “high bounce” and worthy of another 5 stars. It indicates the bed’s high buoyancy due to its latex construction — pretty ideal for a combination sleeper.
Avocado Luxury Organic Mattress Cooling
Overheating can be a major issue for a lot of sleepers, so cooling ability tends to be highly valued. Despite being constructed with materials that are known for temperature regulation, like wool and natural latex, the Luxury Organic actually got its worst score in this category with just 2 out of 5 stars.
Our expert tester used a thermal gun to take the surface temperature of the mattress. It was 67.1 degrees. Then she rested on the bed for five minutes before taking a second reading. It was 82.6 degrees, which is a pretty significant increase of 15.5 degrees. We consider anything above 15 degrees an indication of poor cooling.
“I could feel the mattress heating up while I was laying there,” she said. “I was lying on my stomach and I felt the most heat in my core area, but my arms and legs stayed pretty cool. I think the cotton blended top retains a bit of heat.”

If overheating isn’t a major concern for you, the Luxury Organic Mattress shouldn’t pose any issues. But those who regularly wake up hot and sweaty may want to explore options with active cooling features and better airflow.
Avocado Luxury Organic Mattress Edge Support
Edge support describes how stable the sides of the bed are compared to the center. When you have a mattress with strong edge support, you have more room to stretch out. People with mobility issues also benefit from stable edges, which make it easier to get in and out of bed. The Avocado Luxury Organic earned 3.6 stars out of 5 after we conducted three tests.
Our tester began by sitting on the side of the bed with her feet on the floor. She moved from seated to standing, evaluating how stable she felt. “The springs in the mattress provide enough assistance that it was easy to get up,” she noted. “I felt lifted off of the bed, but not like I was flung towards the wall.” But while the rising test was positive, she wasn’t as impressed when she simply sat there. “The edge sinks enough where a senior user may need some assistance or have to be careful about possibly slipping off,” she noted. She gave the mattress 4 stars for this test.

In the second test, our tester lay on the side of the mattress on her back and side and in general, she didn’t feel as stable. That earned the mattress 3 stars. “I don’t know if I could spend the whole night on the edge without fear of sliding off,” she said. “My shoulders and top half felt stable, but closer to the middle of the mattress where my hips sit, I felt some sinkage.”
Our tester also performed an objective assessment with three stacks of weighted plates that represent three different weight classes. She positioned each stack on the edge of the bed and then measured how far the mattress sank. From lightest to heaviest, the Organic Luxury Mattress sank 3.5 inches, 4.5 inches, and 5.5 inches. This aligned with her earlier experiences and earned the mattress an average score of 3.67.

Avocado Luxury Organic Mattress Performance for Couples
For couples, some mattress performance categories hold a little more weight. Motion isolation, responsiveness, edge support, and cooling all contribute to a mattress that meets the needs of two sleepers, not just one. The Avocado Luxury Organic performed reasonably well across these categories, with the exception of cooling ability, earning an average of 3.6 stars.
That doesn’t mean the mattress is a bad choice for all couples, but it’s worth considering what applies to your sleep needs. If your partner is a tosser and turner and you’re a light sleeper, the Luxury Organic may not be the best choice. If you or your partner chronically overheats at night, a cooling mattress is likely better. But couples who sleep deeply and share a big bed could find the Luxury Organic to be a great fit. Sexually active couples are likely to appreciate the bed’s quick response time, which won’t impede sexual activities.
Other Performance Factors to Consider
For the most well-rounded take on the Avocado Luxury Organic Mattress, there are a few other categories to consider.
Sex
When we rate a mattress for sex, we find the average from responsiveness, cooling, and edge support tests. The best mattress for sex responds quickly so couples don’t feel stuck in the bed, cools well, and has strong edges so you can really spread out. The Luxury Organic Mattress earned 3.5 stars. It has a nice balance of softness and responsiveness, and its edge support is reasonable, but it falls short on cooling ability. Still, we think its strengths here likely outweigh its weaknesses.
Noise
Our tester did everything she could to coax some noise out of the Luxury Organic Mattress, but it stayed silent no matter how much she jumped, pressed, or rolled around. The wool, alpaca, and latex layers do a great job of masking any sound that the innerspring coils might make. She gave the mattress 5 stars.
Base Compatibility
Our tester also evaluated the Luxury Organic’s compatibility with an adjustable base in our testing studio. She moved the head and foot of the bed and put it in the zero-gravity position as well. She gave the mattress 3 stars. It performed a little better than some of the mattresses we’ve tested, but there was minor gapping in the full seated position and in zero gravity.

Avocado Luxury Organic Sleeping Position and Body Weight
Your body weight and preferred sleeping position have a direct impact on mattress performance. That’s why a lightweight side sleeper and a heavyweight stomach sleeper can find the same mattress feels radically different. Here’s what to expect from the Luxury Organic Mattress for different weight classes and different sleep styles.
Before we dive into our recommendations, though, we want to recognize that people come in all shapes and sizes, and people of every size deserve a mattress that works for their body type. We use the weight categories light, average, and heavy to more easily categorize sleepers based on how mattresses will perform for their body type, as most mattresses are designed for the group we call “average” (130 to 230 pounds).
As a general takeaway, lighter sleepers don’t require as much support as average-weight sleepers, and mattresses will tend to feel firmer to them. On the other hand, heavy sleepers tend to need more support than average-weight sleepers and sink into the mattress more. As far as sleeping positions go, side sleepers likely need a softer mattress while stomach sleepers usually need a firmer, more supportive one. Back sleepers are usually somewhere in the middle.
Is the Avocado Luxury Organic a Good Mattress for Light Sleepers (Under 130 pounds)?
- Light Back Sleepers – This is an ideal fit for these sleepers, with enough softness for gentle sinkage and plenty of support for comfortable alignment.
- Light Side Sleepers – While this was really comfortable, it’s possible that these sleepers may begin experiencing mild pressure in the shoulders since they lack the weight to sink deeply enough for sufficient contouring.
- Light Stomach Sleepers – This is another great fit, especially for those who like a medium feel and zero constriction in the chest.

Is the Avocado Luxury Organic a Good Mattress for Average-Weight Sleepers (130–230 pounds)?
- Average-Weight Back Sleepers – Hip alignment is great in this position for sleepers in this weight class, with plenty of contouring in the lower back from the plush top.
- Average-Weight Side Sleepers – These sleepers should have enough weight to sink in for ample pressure relief in the hips and shoulders, along with ideal alignment.
- Average-Weight Stomach Sleepers – This group should also be comfortable, with proper alignment across the neck, spine, and hips.
Is the Avocado Luxury Organic a Good Mattress for Heavy Sleepers (over 230 pounds)?
- Heavy Back Sleepers – This is a tall mattress with a lot of layers, so it might accommodate heavier back sleepers who prefer more sinkage.
- Heavy Side Sleepers – This group should sink enough to get great contouring in the hips and shoulders, but proper spinal alignment could be a concern.
- Heavy Stomach Sleepers – These sleepers need strong support in the hips to keep the spine straight. While the Luxury Organic has ergonomic zones, it may not be enough to keep heavier stomach sleepers properly supported.

My Final Thoughts About the Avocado Luxury Organic Mattress
While there are a lot of sleepers who might find the Avocado Luxury Organic Mattress the secret to sweeter dreams, that’s not true for everyone. Here’s who we’d recommend this mattress for, and who may be best served by spending their money elsewhere.
Who I Recommend the Avocado Luxury Organic Mattress For
- Those who prioritize sustainability. As the name suggests, the Luxury Organic is a certified organic mattress. If that matters to you, it’s hard to find a better option.
- Lightweight back and stomach sleepers. This bed has a great balance of softness and support, so even lightweight sleepers should feel aligned yet cradled.
- Average-weight sleepers who like gentle contouring. The Luxury Organic should be softly contouring for all sleepers in this weight class, with gentle cushioning that fills in gaps for comfortable alignment.
- Combination sleepers. Three inches of certified organic Dunlop latex give this mattress excellent responsiveness, so combination sleepers should have no issues changing position without disrupting their sleep.
Who I Don’t Recommend the Avocado Luxury Organic Mattress For
- Shoppers on a budget. Even with Avocado’s frequent sales, the Luxury Organic is expensive. It’s firmly in the “premium mattress” category, which means a high price tag.
- Fans of a firm mattress. The Avocado Luxury Organic Mattress has a medium feel, and upgraded models are even softer. If you prefer a firmer feel, this one is probably going to feel too soft.
Avocado Luxury Organic Mattress Pricing and Sizing
While Avocado qualifies as a luxury brand, the brand does offer frequent sales that bring the price tag down. The Luxury Organic isn’t offered in a twin, but it’s available in twin XL through split king sizes.
Size | Price |
Twin | $ |
Twin XL | $3999.00 |
Full | $4699.00 |
Queen | $4799.00 |
King | $5999.00 |
California King | $5999.00 |

Avocado Luxury Organic vs. Competitor
The Avocado Luxury Organic has a lot of similarities to the Saatva Latex Hybrid. Let’s see how they compare side by side.
Avocado Luxury Organic vs Saatva Latex Hybrid
Both the Avocado Luxury Organic and the Saatva Latex Hybrid are crafted with organic materials, so they’re a good choice if you’re thinking about sustainability. The Saatva mattress is slightly shorter at 12 inches, and we found it to be a true medium-firm bed with a firmness rating of 6.5 out of 10. Like Avocado, Saatva offers a 365-day sleep trial but it’s backed by a lifetime warranty. Plus, it comes with free white glove delivery.
- Price: If you’re shopping on budget alone, the Saatva Latex Hybrid is more economical. A queen size is $2,499 before sales, compared to $4,799 for the Avocado.
- Sleeping position: During testing, we found the Saatva most compatible with back sleeping, but it’s a great fit for light and medium-weight sleepers in general. The Avocado has a softer feel, so it’s better for sleepers who prefer a medium firmness.
- Cooling: The Saatva outperformed the Avocado in cooling, so hot sleepers will do better with the former.
- Body weight: We don’t recommend either mattress for heavyweight side and stomach sleepers.
Read more in our full Saatva Latex Hybrid mattress review.
The Saatva Latex Hybrid is made with organic materials such as organic wool and cotton, Talalay latex, and pocketed coils, all of which result in a bouncy and responsive feel. We think it should be a good fit for back sleepers, stomach sleepers, and combination sleepers who switch sleeping positions at night. The white glove delivery Saatva provides is an added perk and will save you the headache of getting rid of your old mattress (they take it away for free!). For more information, watch our video review.
What our tester says:
“When we tested the Saatva Latex Hybrid, we found it most compatible with back sleeping due to its medium-firm feel that supports all body types. Its buoyant latex layer and bouncy spring coils also made this bed stand out during our responsiveness tests, allowing combination sleepers to easily switch between sleeping positions.” – Riley Otis, staff writer and certified sleep science coach
Other Models from Avocado
The Avocado Green is the mattress brand’s flagship model, and it remains a top seller. Here’s how both Avocado mattresses compare.
Avocado Luxury Organic vs Avocado Green
The Avocado Green has the same impressive certifications as the Luxury Organic, and it’s certified organic as well. It comes standard as a firm model, with upgrades available for a pillow top and a box top, just like the Luxury Organic. While you get the same trial window and warranty, the Avocado Green ships free and has a much more budget-friendly price tag.
- Price: A queen-size Green Mattress in the standard model is $2,099 before sales, so it’s much more affordable.
- Sleeping position: We think the Green works well for back sleepers of all body types, and it works for certain side sleepers as well. It has a firmer feel — we rated it a 7 out of 10, so it’s not as plush as the Luxury Organic.
- Cooling: The Green fared better in our cooling tests, earning 3.5 stars out of 5. Hot sleepers will probably do better on this over the Luxury Organic.
- Body weight: Lightweight side sleepers will be better off on the Luxury Organic and its plusher feel, but all back sleepers and light and average weight stomach sleepers should be very comfortable on the Green.

Made with organic cotton, wool, natural latex, and recycled steel coils, the Avocado Green mattress is an organic, latex hybrid mattress that provides sleepers with responsiveness and strong support. We think this bed should be especially comfortable for back sleepers and combination sleepers who switch sleeping positions at night. Also, innerspring coils promote airflow and latex is a naturally porous material, so this should be a good choice for hot sleepers who need a cooling mattress. Learn more in our video review.
What our tester says:
“The materials and construction have received a plethora of third-party certifications for sustainability that can appeal to eco-friendly shoppers. Also, combination sleepers should be able to easily move from one position to another without feeling inhibited.” – Riley Otis, staff writer and certified sleep science coach
Our Review Process
At Sleepopolis, our team of certified sleep science coaches personally test each mattress. We start by unboxing the mattress to figure out how difficult (or easy) it is to get the mattress from the box to the bed. Then, we spend time lying on the bed in different positions, taking time to assess it on our backs, stomachs, and sides. Next, we perform our Sleepopolis tests, using specialized tools to measure qualities like motion transfer, bounce, and pressure relief. Our last step is to open up the mattress and take a look at each layer. These steps allow us to give our final verdict on the mattress.
