The Birch Natural is an organic mattress by Helix that sports a latex hybrid construction. It stands out due to its natural materials that have obtained multiple certifications to ensure ethical materials and manufacturing processes. This review focuses on the standard model, but the Birch Natural is also sold in a Luxe mode, which includes a plush Euro top.
I’ve been testing and reviewing mattresses for Sleepopolis for three years and have been trained to recognize the ins and outs of mattress performance. Our team of expert testers and certified sleep science coaches has tested more than 330 beds in our studio based in Charlotte, NC, using our rigorous testing methodology to determine the best mattresses for specific body types and sleeping positions.
We work closely with a network of medical professionals, including board-certified doctors, physical therapists, registered nurses, and sleep experts to ensure our findings are accurate. Our chief medical advisor Dr. Raj Dasgupta MD, FACP, FCCP, FAASM, also provides expert medical advice for different sleepers and common sleep issues.
When we tested the Birch Natural, we found it incredibly responsive due to its latex foam and coil system. We think back sleepers will find a great balance between support and pressure relief, and some stomach sleepers can also appreciate the firmer feel that promotes spinal alignment.
The Birch Natural is a latex mattress utilizing individually wrapped coils for added support. This mattress specializes in cooling and responsiveness, and the firmer nature suits back and stomach sleepers well. Perhaps the most special part about this mattress is the material quality. Not only is the Birch organic, but it has also earned multiple certifications for safe production and materials. For more information, check out our video review.
What our tester says:
“One of my favorite things about the Birch is how cooling it is. I think any hot sleeper will be satisfied by this breathable bed. It’s definitely one of the most cooling mattresses available thanks to its wool and latex layers. These cooling materials also make it one of my favorite organic mattresses.” – Madison Schaper, Sleepopolis staff writer
Birch Natural Mattress Overview
The Birch Natural is an organic mattress with a latex hybrid construction. In terms of firmness, it’s a medium-firm bed that leans slightly firm, landing at a 7 out of 10 on our mattress firmness scale. This feel and construction is most compatible with back sleepers and stomach sleepers.
The Birch Natural is 11 inches tall and has a smooth surface that’s easy to move around on. It’s a bed-in-a-box mattress, so it will arrive at your door ready to be unpacked and set up. You can also opt for an in-home setup and the removal of your old mattress at checkout.
This bed stands out from other mattresses due to its bouncy, buoyant nature that earned the full 5 stars on our responsiveness tests. We also found it to be a good choice for hot sleepers due to its naturally cooling latex foam and innerspring coils that promote airflow. When we combined all our testing scores together, the Birch Natural earned 4.21 stars overall.

Birch Natural Mattress Sleepopolis Score
Birch Natural Value
When we assess a mattress’s value, we take a look at its materials and whether their quality and the bed’s performance match the price. The Birch is an organic mattress made with very high-quality materials that have passed rigorous testing standards to obtain third-party certifications, meaning it contains no harmful chemicals or pollutants.
Organic beds like this one typically come at a higher price point, but we think the Birch’s high-quality construction and natural materials more than justify its cost. Before discounts, you can find a queen size for $1,874, and you’re likely to get the mattress for even cheaper during the brand’s frequent sales.

When we evaluate mattress materials, we get up close and personal. To truly understand what’s going on inside, we use a box cutter to cut away a small part of the bed and view each individual layer.
The Birch is an 11-inch-tall natural latex hybrid mattress made with organic materials. This bed is also Greenguard Gold certified and contains CertiPUR-US certified foams, which means it won’t release high levels of chemical emissions or volatile organic compounds into your home. We noticed that it had less of a smell during off-gassing than typical bed-in-a-box mattresses.
When we cut into the Birch Natural, we found a hybrid construction that included organic latex foam and pocketed coils. When we pressed down on the latex layer, we noticed that it bounced back very quickly, unlike traditional memory foam that takes a while to return to its original shape.

Birch Natural Mattress Firmness
Firmness can sometimes be subjective — what feels soft to one sleeper may feel very firm to another sleeper with a different body type or preferred sleeping position. That’s why we always have multiple testers lie on a mattress in three sleeping positions. Each tester provides their own firmness rating, and then we average them together to create the final firmness score. We score firmness on a scale of 1 to 10, where 1 is the softest and 10 is the firmest. For reference, a score of 6.5 out of 10 is the standard for a true medium-firm mattress, which is the most common mattress firmness.

The Birch Natural ended up falling at a 7 out of 10 on the firmness scale. This means that it’s a medium-firm bed that leans a tad towards the firmer side. While the top layers are softer and allow for a bit of sinkage, the sturdy support coils felt like they lifted us up and out of the bed. You’ll likely feel more “on” the bed than “in” the bed.
When our tester and Sleepopolis managing editor Dan Caffrey tested the Birch’s firmness level, he found it most compatible with back and stomach sleeping, which we’ll dive deeper into later in this review. Overall, this bed provides more support than cushioning, so while it may not be the best pick for side sleepers, it does an excellent job promoting proper spinal alignment.
Birch Natural Mattress Performance
When you’re purchasing a new mattress, there are a few performance factors that you may want to consider. Our testers Dan Caffrey, Carter Coughlin, Erin Chiles, Asha Birjah, Kate Gorman, and Caine Wilkes all came together in our Sleepopolis testing studio to evaluate the Birch in pressure relief, motion isolation, responsiveness, cooling, and edge support.
Our testers collected quantitative and qualitative data to better understand how the bed may perform for you. Below, I’ll provide a brief synopsis of each test and how the Birch Natural performed.
Birch Natural Pressure Relief
Pressure relief is an important factor for all sleepers to consider regardless of their body type or sleeping positions. According to our Chief Medical Advisor Dr. Raj Dasgupta, mattresses that use either memory foam or latex foam typically provide the best pressure relief, so we had high hopes for this organic latex bed.
We test a bed’s ability to relieve pressure using a specialized mat that we spread out across the mattress before lying on it in the back- and side-sleeping positions. This mat uses thermal technology to sense where pressure is building, and then displays the results in a color-coded graphic. Areas displaying blue and green indicate low pressure building, which is what we want to see. Reds and yellows indicate areas experiencing higher pressure buildup.
Your body type can largely determine whether a bed helps relieve pressure or not. For example, lightweight sleepers (less than 130 pounds) typically experience mattresses as firmer and find less sinkage and contouring, and therefore less pressure relief. Heavy sleepers (over 230 pounds) usually sink further into a mattress’s layers, but there is a risk of sinking too far. To get a deeper perspective on how the Birch performs for a diverse range of bodies, we had three testers of different weight categories try the Birch on both their back and side.
We found an average pressure relief score of 3.75 out of 5 stars in the side-sleeping position and 4.5 out of 5 stars in the back-sleeping position. When we average these scores together, we get an overall pressure rating of 4.12 stars.
Overall, our testers felt the most pressure relief when sleeping on their backs. Our average-weight tester Dan Caffrey said, “I’m getting good pressure relief at my lumbar region. My shoulders are getting a nice lift and keeping my spine neutrally aligned.” His average PSI (pounds per square inch) reading in this position was 10.37, which is lower than the typical average PSI of 15.1, which indicates a lot of pressure being relieved. In fact, all three of our testers had lower PSI averages than 15.1 in this position, so we think it’s a good choice for back sleepers of all body types.

When our testers tried the Birch on their sides, they felt just okay, with nobody noting outstanding pressure relief. Our lightweight tester, Asha Birjah, found the most pressure relief out of everyone, with a PSI of 11.55. The average PSI in the side-sleeping position is 12.6, so we think lightweight side sleepers will find good relief on this bed. However, both our average-weight and heavyweight testers experienced pressure building at their shoulders, and they both had higher PSI averages than 12.6. Based on these results, we don’t think this bed is the best choice for average and heavyweight side sleepers, especially if they have sensitive shoulders.

Birch Natural Motion Isolation
If you sleep with a partner, you may want to pay close attention to this section. When we talk about motion isolation, we’re referring to the bed’s ability to absorb movement at the source and prevent the sleeper on the other side from feeling it. This is especially important for light sleepers who are easily awakened, and anyone with a restless partner. According to Dr. Raj Dasgupta, motion isolation can also indicate material quality, construction, and overall comfort. We evaluate motion isolation using a ripple test and a partner test. The Birch earned an overall score of 4 stars in this category.
The ripple test is simple — we place a full tub of water on one side of the mattress and then get in and out of bed on the other side and switch between sleeping positions. We then observe the water in the tub and whether it’s gently rippling or aggressively sloshing. When Dan Caffrey performed the ripple test on the Birch, he saw only slight rippling, even when performing larger movements. He rated it 5 stars for getting in and out of bed and 4 stars for switching positions.
Our partner test is similar to the ripple test, except we swap the water tub for an actual human who can tell us how much motion they feel. During this test, Dan could feel his partner’s movement but didn’t experience too much jostling. He said, “I don’t think it would be an issue if you are a heavy sleeper, but maybe look for another bed if you sleep lightly.” He gave this test 3 stars.
Based on its 4-star rating for motion isolation, we think couples can sleep on the Birch without experiencing sleep disturbance, especially if they sleep soundly. However, you may feel larger movements from a tossing-and-turning partner, which may not be ideal for those easily stirred awake.

Birch Natural Responsiveness
Responsiveness refers to how quickly the bed returns to its original shape after weight has been applied. Typically, latex mattresses like the Birch are very responsive due to the latex’s natural buoyancy. Since the Birch also contains springy coils, we weren’t surprised by the 5-star responsiveness it offered. We created this score based on four responsiveness tests, which I’ll outline below.
Switch test: The switch test is exactly what it sounds like—a tester lies on the bed and sees how easy it is to switch between different sleeping positions and whether the bed provides any bounce that assists them while doing so. When Dan performed the switch test, he gave it 5 stars, saying, “It’s super easy to switch on this bed. There’s not a ton of sinkage when I roll over, and I had no problem going from my back to my side to my stomach.”
Responsiveness test: This test collects data based on how long it takes for the mattress to bounce back. I performed this test myself, and it involves placing a 53-pound kettlebell on the bed for seven seconds to allow it to fully sink in. I then pulled the weight straight up and used a stop watch to record how long it takes for the bed to return to its original shape. It took less than a second for the Birch to bounce back, which earned it 5 stars.
Sinkage test: I grabbed our kettlebell again for this test and placed it directly on the center of the Birch. I then used a ruler to measure exactly how far the weight sank in, and found 3 inches of sinkage, which is just a smidge less than the 3.25-inch average. However, this still qualifies as deep sinkage.
Bounce test: Our final test quantifies exactly how bouncy the bed is. We used a ladder to climb 6 feet above the mattress and then dropped a 25-pound steel ball onto its surface. A yardstick on the wall showed us how high the ball bounced. On the Birch, the ball bounced 17.5 inches, which is higher than the 15.8-inch average, which classifies it as having high bounce. The average mattress has moderate bounce, so this bed is bouncier than most beds on the market.
Birch Natural Cooling
If you tend to wake up feeling overheated and sweaty, you’re likely a hot sleeper. These sleepers can benefit from a mattress with cooling abilities that help regulate temperature and prevent heat trapping. We put the Birch’s cooling to the test using a thermal gun, a cover test, and a feel test to create a final cooling score of 4 stars.
Thermal gun test: The thermal gun helps provide an objective measure of how the mattress responds to body heat. We first use the thermal gun to record the bed’s initial temperature. Then, a tester lies on the bed for five minutes and we record the bed’s temperature again. If the temperature increases by fewer than 5 degrees, we consider it to have excellent cooling. An increase of 5 to 10 degrees indicates good cooling, 10 to 15 degrees indicates decent cooling, and more than 15 degrees indicates poor cooling.
When Dan performed the thermal gun test on the Birch Natural, the mattress went from 66.4 degrees to 74 degrees. This is a 7.6-degree increase, indicating good cooling, which earned the bed 4 stars.

Cover test: During this test, our tester feels the surface of the mattress and whether or not it has a cool-to-the-touch sensation when they first lie down. The Birch has an organic cotton cover, which is breathable but not necessarily cooler than room temperature.
Feel test: When our tester is lying on the bed for five minutes, they’re also observing whether they can feel the mattress heating up underneath them. When Dan performed this test, he said, “I could feel it heating up just a little bit, but it wasn’t uncomfortable. It felt cozy more than anything.”
Since the Birch Natural contains naturally cooling latex, breathable organic cotton and wool, and coils that promote airflow, we think most sleepers should be comfortable and not experience overheating. However, especially hot sleepers may want a mattress with even more cooling features.
Birch Natural Edge Support
Edge support refers to the strength of the bed’s perimeter. When we say a bed has strong edge support, we mean the edges are just as sturdy and supportive as the very center of the bed. This can appeal to couples, as they can fully spread out and use the entire surface of the mattress, which makes the bed feel larger. People with mobility issues can also rely on strong edges when getting in and out of bed. We tested edge support using a tape measure test, a seated test, and a full body test to create a final score of 4 stars.
Tape measure test: The tape measure test, also known as the weighted edge support test, involves stacking weighted plates on top of each other and placing them directly on the edge of the mattress. We create three stacks of weights to represent different sleepers – a 99-pound stack, a 154-pound stack, and a 198-pound stack. We then use a tape measure to measure how much the edges collapse beneath each. From lightest to heaviest, the sinkage went from 2.5 inches to 4 inches to 5.5 inches. As we added weight, the edges’ integrity began to falter. When we combine the ratings from all three, the Birch gets an average of 4 stars for this test.
Seated test: During this test, our tester sits directly on the side of the mattress and stands up several times. They observe how supported they feel and whether they feel at risk of slipping off the bed. When Dan performed this test on the side of the bed, he found it very easy to stand up.

“I got a bit of bounce from the springs and latex on the perimeter,” he said. “However, the head, foot, and corners of the bed had a lot more sinkage, and it was harder to sit down and stand up.” He ended up giving this test 3 stars.
Full body test: The Birch performed much better on this test, which involves lying down near the edges in different sleeping positions. Dan said, “I felt adequately supported in all three sleeping positions. I never felt like I was going to fall off on either my back, side, or stomach.” Since he felt so secure, Dan gave this test 5 stars.
Birch Natural Mattress Performance for Couples
When it comes to sleeping with a partner, cooling, responsiveness, edge support, and motion isolation are the most important elements to consider. Based on the Birch Natural’s performance in these categories, I think it’s a solid choice for couples.
The Birch earned 4 stars in the cooling, motion isolation, and edge support categories. While this isn’t a perfect score, it still means it’s better than average. Couples should be able to sleep cool, avoid disturbing each other’s sleep, and fully spread out on this bed with no issues.
Responsiveness is where this bed really shines. Its 5-star response score means it’s a great bed for sexually active couples, which I’ll go into more detail about below.
Other Performance Factors to Consider
We went over a lot in the above tests, but we’re not done just yet. There’s still a few things you’ll want to keep in mind before confirming your purchase.
Sex
We create our score for sex based on responsiveness, cooling, and edge support. The best mattresses for sex are bouncy enough to help couples move and switch positions without getting stuck in the bed. They’re also cooling enough to prevent you from getting too steamy, and they have strong edges that allow you to use the entire surface of the bed. Based on the 4-star cooling and edges and the 5-star responsiveness, this bed earns 4.3 stars for sex.
Noise
Our tester Carter Coughlin tested the Birch Natural for noise and gave it 4 stars. He said, “There is a bit of noise when the mattress compresses, producing a crumpling sound. The sound is not long, but it is consistent with anything more than slight movement.” We don’t think this noise will disrupt your sleep, especially once you add bedding, but it is something to be aware of.
Base Compatibility
Carter also tested the Birch Natural’s compatibility with an adjustable base and gave it 3 stars. While he thought the bed conformed pretty well to the base, he did notice some gapping where the mattress and the base didn’t quite meet. The mattress cover scrunches up when the head and legs are raised to their highest setting, which he found uncomfortable. While we think this base could work with slight head and leg elevation, we wouldn’t recommend elevating them all the way.
Durability
When you buy a new mattress, you’ll want to be able to use it for a long time. We evaluate durability by looking at the materials, support, edge support, and warranty. A strong support system and strong edges can prevent the mattress from sagging prematurely. High-quality materials also last longer than cheap materials, which are likely to deteriorate over time. The warranty also gives us an idea of how long the brand expects their mattress to last.
Overall, I think the Birch Natural is a fairly durable mattress. It not only has a sturdy-feeling construction but it’s made with high-quality, organic materials, so I don’t think it’s likely to break down over time. The sturdy latex and coils make this bed very supportive, so it should stand strong without sagging. The edges aren’t reinforced, which means they may begin to sag over the years. However, we found them stronger than average, earning 4 stars, so we think they’ll still hold up for many years. Our confidence is supplemented by Birch’s limited lifetime warranty, which earns 5 stars. If I had to make an educated guess based on these factors, I’d say the bed should last you at least 10 years.

Birch Natural Sleeping Position and Body Weight
Your body weight and preferred sleeping positions can impact how a bed will feel for you. For example, what feels firm to a lightweight side sleeper may be too soft for a stomach sleeper with a larger body. For this reason, we tested the Birch using three testers of different sizes and had them try the bed on their sides, backs, and stomachs. Below, I’ve broken down each weight category and how the bed will likely feel in each position. Simply find your weight and sleeping position to see how this bed may perform for you.
Before we dive into our recommendations, though, we want to recognize that people come in all shapes and sizes, and people of every size deserve a mattress that works for their body type. We use the weight categories light, average, and heavy to more easily categorize sleepers based on how mattresses will perform for their body type, as most mattresses are designed for the group we call “average” (130 to 230 pounds).
As a general takeaway, lighter sleepers don’t require as much support as average-weight sleepers, and mattresses will tend to feel firmer to them. On the other hand, heavy sleepers tend to need more support than average-weight sleepers and tend to sink into the mattress more. As far as sleeping positions go, side sleepers tend to need a softer mattress while stomach sleepers usually need a firmer, more supportive one. Back sleepers are usually somewhere in the middle.
Is the Birch Natural a Good Mattress for Light Sleepers (Under 130 pounds)?
- Light Back Sleepers – The Birch Natural is a great choice for these sleepers, who should find enough firm support at the hips to prop them in line with the shoulders, thus promoting spinal alignment.
- Light Side Sleepers – I think these sleepers can enjoy the Birch Natural if they prefer a firmer feel. While they won’t find much sinkage, they’re unlikely to experience pressure buildup. However, if you prefer a softer bed you may not like side sleeping on the Birch.
- Light Stomach Sleepers – These sleepers are a great fit for the Birch. The bed is firm enough to prevent the hips from sinking too far into the mattress, which can cause lower back pain in this position. The bed provides plenty of lift at the hips to place the spine in a straight line.

Is the Birch Natural a Good Mattress for Average-Weight Sleepers (130-230 pounds)?
- Average-Weight Back Sleepers – I think this bed is an excellent choice for these sleepers. They should find a nice balance between cushioning at the lumbar region and overall spinal support.
- Average-Weight Side Sleepers – While the Birch can work for some average-weight side sleepers, those with sensitive shoulders may want a softer bed that provides more contouring to prevent pressure buildup in this area.
- Average-Weight Stomach Sleepers – These sleepers should find enough firm support on the Birch to lift their hips in line with their shoulders and prevent the spine from bending unnaturally.
Is the Birch Natural a Good Mattress for Heavy Sleepers (over 230 pounds)?
- Heavy Back Sleepers – These sleepers should feel supported on the Birch. While you’re likely to sink further into the layers than a lighter sleeper, your spine should still be aligned, thanks to the supportive coils.
- Heavy Side Sleepers – I wouldn’t recommend this bed to heavy side sleepers, who are likely to experience pressure building at their hips and shoulders.
- Heavy Stomach Sleepers – This bed is unlikely to be supportive enough for heavy stomach sleepers, who should seek an even firmer bed with more support.

Our Review Process
At Sleepopolis, our team of certified sleep science coaches personally test each mattress. We start by unboxing the mattress to figure out how difficult (or easy) it is to get the mattress from the box to the bed. Then, we spend time lying on the bed in different positions, taking time to assess it on our backs, stomachs, and sides.
Next, we perform our Sleepopolis tests, using specialized tools to measure qualities like motion transfer, bounce, and pressure relief. Our last step is to open up the mattress and take a look at each layer. These steps allow us to give our final verdict on the mattress.
