Is the Brooklyn Bedding Propel Hybrid a Good Mattress for You?
The Dual-Sided Propel Hybrid isn’t the first flippable mattress to hit the sleep world, but Brooklyn Bedding does say it’s unique in the way it offers recovery benefits. The company says there are materials on both sides of the mattress to “penetrate, soothe and stimulate local blood flow, enabling a more restorative sleep.” Although appealing in nature, the materials and feel of this bed will work better for some sleepers than others. So let’s first go over who I do and don’t recommend the Propel Hybrid for.
Who I recommend the Brooklyn Bedding Propel Hybrid for
- If you’re someone who likes to have options, then this flippable mattress is right up your alley. It has a soft side and a firm side you can try out. The 120-day trial period the mattress comes with gives you plenty of time to see which side you like best too.
- If you like sinking into a mattress, then the Propel Hybrid could be the right choice for you. It’s very cushiony and I feel like I’m sinking into a cloud on it (especially on the soft side). This feature also makes it a nice pick for back or side sleepers with aches or pains.
- I really like the cooling features this mattress offers. From the cool-to-the-touch cover, to the copper-infused foam, to the coils — this is a nice bed for my fellow hot sleepers out there.
Who I don’t recommend the Brooklyn Bedding Propel Hybrid for
- Stomach sleepers will likely find both sides of this bed too soft. I found even the “firm” side of the mattress to allow my hips to sink in too far when laying on my stomach. These sleepers need a firm bed to keep their hips elevated and spine in alignment. You can check out our picks for the best mattresses for stomach sleepers for better options.
- If you like to feel more “on top” of a bed and not “in it,” then this probably isn’t the right choice for you. As mentioned, I definitely feel like I’m sinking into it and that it offers a contouring foam feeling. However, the firm side has less sinkage than the soft side [if you can tolerate a little bit of it].
- If you prefer your bed to have some bounce, I’d look elsewhere. This bed has a foam feeling more than a bouncy, springy feel. I’d recommend looking for a traditional innerspring mattress instead.
How Firm is the Brooklyn Bedding Propel Hybrid?
It’s important to note firmness is subjective. How firm a mattress feels to you depends on your body weight, shape, and preferred sleeping position. I tested both the “soft” and “firm” sides of the Propel Hybrid myself, then polled a range of coworkers to get their opinions. I then averaged our scores and firmness levels together.
We use a firmness scale of 1 to 10 at Sleepopolis with 6.5 being the standard for medium-firm. I gave the Propel Hybrid’s soft side a firmness rating of 3.5 out of 10 and I gave its firm side a rating of 6.5 out of 10 (meaning it’s more medium-firm than firm), so you can see there’s quite a difference in firmness between the two sides.
The Propel Hybrid is the type of mattress that when you sit or lay down on it, you feel like you’re submerging into foam. The soft side has a bit more of a sinking and memory foam feeling than the firm side, but you’re unlikely to feel “on top” of either side due to the top foam layers. The firm layer is more responsive than the soft, making it easier to move around on for combination sleepers.

- Light Back Sleepers – I think light back sleepers should feel comfortable on both the firm and soft sides of the Propel Hybrid. It may come down to personal preference on whether these sleepers want the softer or firmer feel.
- Light Side Sleepers – I think both sides of the Propel Hybrid will work nicely for side sleepers and they should get the contouring they need.
- Light Stomach Sleepers – The firm side of this mattress should work for light stomach sleepers. However, the soft side will be too soft for them and won’t keep their hips elevated.
Is the Brooklyn Bedding Propel Hybrid a Good Mattress for Average Weight Sleepers (130 – 250 pounds)?
- Average Weight Back Sleepers – Both sides of the Propel Hybrid should work great for these sleepers. Both sides should keep them comfortable and supported.
- Average Weight Side Sleepers – I’d recommend the soft side of this mattress for average weight side sleepers. It should provide the needed pressure relief around their shoulders and hips. The firm side will work for some of these sleepers as well, but the soft side will offer much more contouring and sinkage at those pressure points.
- Average Weight Stomach Sleepers – Both sides of this bed are going to be too soft for these sleepers. I’d suggest they look for a firmer option in our roundup of best mattresses for stomach sleepers instead.

- Heavy Sleepers – Although I think some heavy sleepers could be comfortable on this mattress, I’d recommend checking out our roundup of the best mattresses for heavy people for more supportive and comfortable options.
Brooklyn Bedding Propel Hybrid Pain Relief Performance
Pressure relief is important for a lot of people looking for a new mattress. If a mattress is good at relieving pressure, that can also lead to helping with joint and back pain. In order to test how well a bed provides pressure relief, I use a pressure map — which uses heat mapping technology to show where pressure’s building across my body when I lay on a bed. Results appear on a color-coded map: Blue/green show areas of low pressure, and red/orange show areas of high pressure.
Take a look at the results below, and then read on to see what they could mean if you sleep with pain.
Back Pain – You can see mainly blue when I’m on my back on both sides of the Propel Hybrid, which is great news for back sleepers with back pain. It’s also mainly blue and green when I’m on my side on both sides, showing it could provide nice relief for side sleepers with back pain. However, it’s too soft of an option for stomach sleepers with back pain since their hips won’t reach the right level of elevation.
Shoulder Pain – Both the soft and firm side of this mattress show great results for back sleepers with shoulder pain. The soft side also shows great results for side sleepers with shoulder pain. There’s a touch of red forming at the shoulder on the firm side of the Propel Hybrid when laying on my side, so I’d suggest side sleepers with shoulder pain stick to the soft side. This mattress is too soft to help stomach sleepers with shoulder pain, as it will instead cause their hips to sink in too much – likely resulting in back pain.
Hip Pain – Both sides of the Propel Hybrid performed well for back and side sleepers with hip pain. However, stomach sleepers will want to look for a firmer option to help alleviate pain, such as ones in our best firm mattress roundup.
Brooklyn Bedding Propel Hybrid Performance for Couples
The best mattress for couples will often feature good motion isolation, responsiveness, cooling features, and edge support. Below I’ll go over why each of those features are important and go over how both sides of the Propel Hybrid perform in each area.
Motion Transfer
Motion transfer is a measure of how movement carries from one side of the bed to the other. If you share a bed with a partner or pet, this is a measure of how disturbed you’ll feel when they move around or get in and out of bed. To test motion transfer, I put a seismometer reader on the mattress, then dropped a 10-pound steel ball from various heights onto the other side of the bed.
The seismometer results showed strong motion isolation on both sides of the Propel Hybrid. Based on these results, I wouldn’t think you’d be too disturbed by your partner or pet moving around in the night.
Sex
The best mattress for sex is bouncy and responsive, which makes it easy to move around. Since the firm side of the Propel Hybrid has less of a sinking-in feeling than the soft side, I’d say the firm side makes a better pick for sex.
Cooling
Couples tend to overheat more quickly than those who sleep alone, so they often want one of the best cooling mattresses. The Propel Hybrid has an Upcycle™ cover, which the company says will transform body heat into energy for restoration (I’ll explain more about the Upcycle cover later on in this review). The bed also features pocketed coils, which promote airflow and keep it cool for hot sleepers. Edge Support
Edge support measures how well the perimeter of a bed supports weight. This is important if you like to sit or sleep near the side of the mattress or edge of the bed. Strong edge support can also make a bed feel larger, which allows couples to expand their sleep surface. I’d say both sides of the Propel Hybrid have average edge support, with the firm side being a little better.

I also really appreciate all the cooling features in the bed and think it’d be a great option for hot sleepers.
